So the big news today was Michele Carter being found guilty for involuntary manslaughter in her role in the suicide of her boyfriend Conrad Roy.

Most people seem to happy about this verdict. And granted, this chick is the anti-christ and I can’t wish worse things upon her. You need only look at the insane text messages this chick sent him in the days leading up to his death to understand how truly twisted she is:

Everyone will be sad for a while but they will get over it and move on. They won’t be in depression. I won’t let that happen. They know how sad you are, and they know that you are doing this to be happy and I think they will understand and accept it. They will always carry you in their hearts.

They will move on for you because they know that’s what you would have wanted. They know you wouldn’t want them to be sad and depressed and be angry and guilty. They know you want them to live their lives and be happy. So they will for you. You’re right. You need to stop thinking about this and just do it because over turning always kills, over thinking.

Well… I guess [that I am frustrated] just because you always say you are gonna do it but you don’t, but last night I know you really wanted to do it and I’m not mad. Well, I mean, kind of, I guess, just because you always say you’re gonna do it… but you don’t but last night I knew you really wanted to and I’m not mad.

Yeah, it will work. If you emit 3200 ppm of it for five or ten minutes you will die within a half hour. You lose consciousness with no pain. You just fall asleep and die. You can also just take a hose and run that from the exhaust pipe to the rear window in your car and seal it with duct tape and shirts, so it can’t escape. You will die within, like, 20 or 30 minutes all pain free.

And you can’t break a promise. And just go in a quiet parking lot or something.

That’s just a small sampling of it. She’s a sicko, and whoever marries her someday is in for a 3-5 years of misery. The worst part was her motive – social media sympathy. She did it all so that people would feel bad at her. She preyed on a vulnerable, mentally ill individual, and pushed him towards something he was clearly conflicted about, all so people would feel bad for her. She thought of it after she watched it happen on an episode of Glee. I’m not even shitting you. Fucking Glee.

But with all that said, I still disagree with the verdict. Not so much because I think this chick doesn’t deserve to sit in a cell for a while. But more so because it sets a dangerous precedent. What if you talk someone into joining the army who is on the fence about it and they end up getting killed in whatever country we invade next? What if you talk someone into getting a motorcycle and they end up dying in a crash? What if you buy someone a shot and they end up dying in a car crash?

At the end of the day Conrad Roy could’ve told this crazy broad to slow her role and stay in her lane. But he didn’t, because he was mentally ill. This would never happen to anyone with a clear mind. My question is, where does it end? Are people gonna start being charged with manslaughter if they share memes like this?

This is what SJWs are pushing for – the idea that words can kill. We completely reject that notion. Yes, words hurt. Temporarily. We’ve all been there before. We’ve all been depressed. We’ve all been hurt. We’ve all cried. But unfortunately it’s a normal part of growing up. Ultimately the decisions that we make are ours and ours alone.

This is a tough. In most of Europe – if you use a racial slur you can be prosecuted, if you speak negatively towards a religion you can be prosecuted. That’s crazy but Europe now accepts it (even though they know it is selectively inforced).

IMO the death of Conrad Roy is different because of his mental state. Should anyone be liable for telling a 10 y/o to play on the road? Encouraging a teenager to continue drinking?

Gotta admit I’m torn over this. I want this chick to rot in hell but TBS is spot on in saying this is exactly what the SJW and other libs are trying to make illegal. Hate speech is exactly what the 1st Amendment is supposed to protect, and if we allow liberals to define it and make it illegal we are all screwed.

I get where Turtleboy is coming from on this, and the last thing I want is for words to be illegal. That heing said, the problem with this point of view is that there was intent. Talking someone into joining the military or buying a motorcycle isn’t trying to get someone to die. By that logic , telling someone to get a pizza delivery job to better himself would fall into that. Where does it end? Right here with coaxing a mentally unstable person to committing suicide. I don’t agree with involuntary manslaughter to a point, but I do to another extent. According to legal dictionaries, criminal intent manslaughter falls under this, which is why I would agree with the verdict; However, she had intent, which, by the same legal dictionary, would fall under murder. She is kind of like the skanky rich housewife who hires a 15-year-old lover to murder her husband for the $200,000 payout: She didn’t actually do the killing, but she sure did use her words to coax someone else to.

Im sorry, I made an error. It is criminal negligence manslaughter, not criminal intent. I was thinking about the word “intent” to come to the point of murder vs manslaughter. My bust.

My understanding was she was guilty because she did nothing as she sat there in silence the last 20 minutes waiting for him to die.
She knew he was dying and failed call for help. That’s what made her guilty, not her words.

I think everyone who knows this case wishes they just happen to pull up next to this poor kid and pulled him out of that situation before he got back in, or in some other way could have rescued him, he must have been so depressed and scared for a long time.

Anyone feeling like him can get good help for free from trained professionals. 1800-273-8255 they will listen.

Sorry, TB, I have to disagree with you on this one.

“What if you talk someone into joining the army who is on the fence about it and they end up getting killed in whatever country we invade next? What if you talk someone into getting a motorcycle and they end up dying in a crash? What if you buy someone a shot and they end up dying in a car crash?”

The problem with your first two analogies is neither action (joining the army or buying a motorcycle) is inherently illegal.

Better analogies would be “What if I talk someone into robbing a bank” or “What if I talk someone into beating up another person”?

You already know the answer: In both of those instances, you could be tried as an accessory.

In the cast of your latter “shot” analogy, you could absolutely be held culpable if you knowingly buy someone a shot who you know is intoxicated and you know will be driving.

Social media has created a generation of narcissistic egomaniacs.

This broad is the epitome of pure evil. Hopefully the judge will sentence her to 20 years in some Mexican hell-hole prison.

I agree she needs to be locked away.

I agree that she is a despicable human being.

However, like The Turtle, I am worried about the precedent this furthers (not sets- there was another case similar to this one, in MA).

Then again, what else could the Commonwealth have charged her with to ensure she stay behind bars?

TB, if I was with your kid and he/she started choking and I did nothing at all, just stood there and watched knowing they were gonna die, would you say I should have some responsibility in their death?

She did far more to contribute to his death. This is not about words or free speech. And your “what if’s” are hardly relevant. A person doing one thing and then something unexpected happening causing their death is not at all the same as directly telling them to do something that is designed to only cause their death and nothing else.

I think you hit on it. If the kid is choking it’s one thing to walk away and another to offer him another bite which is basically what she did. When i went skydiving I had to sign multiple pages on the contract and at the bottom of all of them they said, skydiving is dangerous, you may die.

Turtleboy is sweating it — I get it!

He just saw another narcissist get pinned for treating others like something disposable.

OH SHOOT! He says. THAT GIRL IS JUST LIKE ME, AND SHE’S HEADED OFF TO PRISON.

That has to be absolutely TERRIFYING for you turtleboy!

As I understand it (and I hope Long Arm will correct me if I’m wrong) the guilty verdict was in large part because she had multiple opportunities to alert EMS and instead just kept egging him on–in other words, less “words hurt” and more “she’s sick in the head” [the ‘involuntary’ part].

    • Long Arm of the Law
      June 16, 2017 at 11:08 pm

      KayD.

The only reason I imagine this was involuntary manslaughter is because it is an easier charge to get a conviction on, since voluntary requires more and holds a stiffer penalty.

I bet she will get 10 years but the whole sentence will be suspended and she will only serve probation and need to attend rehabilitation.

As far as her alerting EMS, that plays a role. This girl went very far to get him to kill himself, but she most likely could’ve summoned him help once she realized he was in fact dead on the phone with her. She went way beyond just saying harmful things and telling him to kill himself. Had she cut the shit any sooner, they wouldn’t have convicted her. But that was her plan. She wanted him to die and did everything to make sure he did.

I was going to say the same thing, the judge didn’t convict her because of the text messages but because she failed to get him help.
I think she has munchausen by proxy, I pray she never has children because she will do similar things to them in her quest for attention.

This is the first time I’ve heard anyone bring up Munchausen and it’s a really astute observation, fits the facts better than any of the celexa reaction bs the expert witness was spewing

I was kind of surprised they didn’t try to use it as her defense since it falls under a mental illness. I’ve never heard anyone use it to describe her either but since I first heard of the case it was the first thing I thought about.

This is not protected speech. Text messages that night reveal she was becoming increasingly angry and aggressive in urging he commit suicide as he continued to fail to kill himself. In his own altered state he was highly suggestable and easily manipulated. She had to know that. She also presents the case to him that his family wouldn’t care, that they’d get over it and it just makes my heart break for him. The worst of it is they were on the phone in his last moments and she listened to him die. From multiple news sites:

[Judge]Moniz, however, focused on Roy’s final moments when he wavered, stepping out of the truck — and Carter told him to “Get back in.” The judge said that although Carter knew Roy was in trouble, she took no action.

“She admits in a subsequent text that she did nothing — she did not call the police or Mr. Roy’s family,” Moniz said in court. “Finally, she did not issue a simple additional instruction: ‘Get out of the truck.’ ”

  • gfldgadfly
    June 16, 2017 at 10:23 pm

There was an earlier precedent for goading another to suicide in mass. I’m straddling the fence on this one.
On one hand, the “involuntary” part of the charge was a cop out. This was voluntary , and took planning, so it seems the prosecution had to take the meat out the weiner to get it in the grand jury’s buns.
On the other hand, we all need to have an honest look at free speech and applied law.
This case is vile and the convicted is vile and can rot. She should have been tried for voluntary manslaughter, with a full jury, because this is a case law precedent. Go big or go home.

Sorry turtle boy I don’t agree. It’s time for people to be accountable for their words. Her words presented a dangerous environment and unfortunately as you say people will get over being called names etc.. this goes beyond that and with this young man battling depression his mind thinks differently and has trouble with “getting over it”. Unfortunately not that easy for some. I am sick of people being cruel to each other and not being accountable. Maybe this will make people think twice before this happens again

  • Long Arm of the Law

    Turtleboy,

I truly love 99.99999% of your writings. But as the Long Arm of the Law I must disagree.

The judge convicted her not because of the many communications she had made with him encouraging his death.

It truly hinged on Roy’s final moments where he exited the car and second guessed himself… this was his 3rd attempt at suicide and he always did this.

She pushed him to get back into the car, and knowing that by doing so he would die, her words amounted to an action that she knew would absolutely lead to his death. And it did.

I understand where you are going with this, especially as it does set a precedent. But I must disagree and hope this doesn’t go any further.
