Editor’s Note: A turtle rider, and passionate dog lover wrote up this little expose on a Rhode Island dooshnozzle who’s bringing a bunch of poor dogs into the shithole he calls life.

TurnToTenGunnar Carlson was charged with 10 charges of animal abuse and 10 charges of animal mistreatment in 2015, when the Warwick Police Department and RISPCA searched his home in Warwick after numerous tips to the RISPCA about possible animal neglect. Authorities discovered 10 dogs living in deplorable conditions. The best part? Carlson claimed he was training these dogs to become service dogs for those suffering from PTSD.

We are not talking a little clutter. We are talking inches of dog shit, everything in the home was chewed up, and no clean water. Carlson didn’t even live in the home himself, he lived in the shed he had on the property:

“Carlson lives on the same five-acre property he did when he was married but now in the small cabin that once served as a “man-cave.” The main house is a kennel for the pit bulls he rescues. Carlson is housing seven pit bulls right now: four will go to veterans and the other three are his own.”

Yeah. A kennel, right. How selfless of you.

Being a huge supporter of LEGITIMATE animal rescues, I follow numerous rescues in the area. I recently came across this post:

Screen Shot 2017-04-26 at 10.00.33 AM

(Ryan Chase is NOT a bad person, and he can be trusted for dog training and/or boarding)

I then noticed that one of the two subjects (Gunnar Carlson) was commenting on the status and demanding the rescue remove the status because its “Slander”

Screen Shot 2017-04-26 at 10.01.50 AM

I must admit, I love how the rescue immediately shut him down. That photo though, it’s so disturbing:

Screen Shot 2017-04-26 at 10.02.35 AM

I could not believe the conditions this poor dog was sleeping in. I had to learn more. A google search quickly confirmed what the rescue was claiming.

Anyways, after you get through all the stories about the house of shit he sheltered these dogs in, you find some older articles discussing his passion for pitbulls and fighting breed specific legislation. This article is filled with questionable information. First off, he claims Cesar Milan taught him how to train his dog.

“All that I do is to help the human and help the dog, but it’s more about the dog,” said Carlson. Carlson said a rough childhood and the trauma of being mugged and left for dead has left him suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). “I went into hibernation mode,” he said of life after the mugging in 1994. “I wouldn’t leave my house.”

Carlson took action and contacted television dog trainer Cesar Milan for tips on how to train his pit bull, Bovine, to be a service dog. Instead of sending suggestions, Milan sent two plane tickets to Carlson. “Milan taught me the energy factor,” said Carlson, explaining that pit bulls have the ability to sense negative energy in the people around them. The dog can alert their owners if there is any need for concern. The experience solidified what I had been doing with the breed for 30 years,” he said. Carlson said pit bulls actually have a history of being people-friendly dogs, serving as pets to protect royalty and as a symbol for the U.S. Army.

Right. This all sounds believable. I will be honest, I have watched a few episodes of his show. I suppose this could be possible, but I doubt it. Besides, correct me if I am wrong, but he always flew to the guests, not the other way around.

Secondly, the article admits that Carlson has no other job and lives from “assistance and donations” and even admits that he oversaw 22 dogs, and would never turn down a dog in need:

At one point, Carlson was in charge of 22 pit bulls and he will truly never turn down a dog in need. “I rescued one on my way here,” he said. In 2010, Carlson began training pit bulls as service dogs for veterans suffering from PTSD. It is his only job; he survives on assistance and donations.

What the hell? How does a person get away with having 22 dogs on their personal property? Are there no laws or licensing you need to be considered a shelter or boarding facility? None the less, he seemed to have the entire animal community behind him in Rhode Island, and seemed to be doing well. Until his neighbors started complaining about the stench coming from his crusty apartment, and his whole castle of shit came tumbling down around him. All 20 charges were misdemeanors, and Carlson plead no contest:

A Warwick man pleaded no contest to 10 counts of animal cruelty. As part of the plea, Gunnar Carlson has agreed not to have any animals for a year, with the exception of one service dog. Investigators rescued 10 pit bulls from Carlson’s home last month.

That’s right, a man who put all those dogs in such a terrible position where they had to literally sleep in their own feces and had no clean drinking water, was only allowed to have “one service dog”. Even if this man is mentally ill, these dogs should not have to suffer. I could go on forever about what a shitbag this dude is, so lets just move on.

    1362677955_dbb1

So why did Almost Home Rescue post a warning two years after the fact? Well Shitbag Carlson moved to Conneticut and thought all his problems would be buried in Rhode Island. Wrong. This chudnut tried to run away from his problems, and he goes only one state over? And thinks what? I will just start a new business and no one will find out? That’s laughable. This is New England, and we are Turtleboy.

I understand he was good with dogs. Even after he left his castle of shit for the city and neighbors to clean up, some people still spoke highly of his interactions with the dogs:

Carlson didn’t show up Thursday at Warwick Municipal Court as the city pursued action to clean up the property, which according to area residents reeks of dog feces, attracts rats and has become a blight on the neighborhood. According to Annamarie Marchetti in the building department’s division of minimum housing, Municipal Court Judge Joel Gerstenblatt gave the city the authority to post the property, the next step in the process to legally clear the way for the city to cleanup the mess. She said a representative of Wells Fargo that holds the mortgage attended the hearing, but there was no sign of Carlson or his former girlfriend, who was also listed on the deed.

Cipriano had a number of encounters with Carlson over the years. She said she knew he had more dogs than permitted by city ordinance and threatened to call animal control, but that “he said he had an in with the pound.” She talked to him again last winter when she saw a puppy in this car. She said she told him to get the dog out of the car immediately, which he did. A couple of days later when it happened again, she called police and there was an immediate response.

Despite those incidents, Cipriano said Carlson cared for the animals and trained them. “He was very good with them,” she said, although he left them unattended this summer when he took off for a week. Cipriano said she could hear the dogs crying and would throw bones into the yard so they would have something to eat.

    gunnar-carlson-mug

However, let me clarify. I don’t care if you think the dogs seemed happy to see him. They are dogs, that’s what makes them so great, they love unconditionally, even if you’re a total scumbag. If you allow dogs to completely overrun your house to the point that you live in your shed because its so bad, but you force them to live in the filth, you are a shit dog trainer, and you are a shit person. You obviously don’t give a shit about the health of said dogs.

Screen Shot 2017-04-26 at 10.16.29 AM

No, these are not just the conditions he HAD to treat them in, they are the conditions HE CREATED. It takes months, years even to accumulate that much feces and trash in a home. The whole time, he’s playing community advocate for bully breeds. Disgusting. Newsflash, forcing dogs to live in these conditions IS ANIMAL ABUSE! He didn’t even provide drinking water! I love dogs! I would love to rescue every pup that needs a home, but you don’t see me doing it. Why? Because that I know it is completely unreasonable. Love dogs, go volunteer at a local shelter, where they follow guidelines, and ensure that each dog has a suitable quality of life. It’s sad there are so many dogs in need of homes, but allowing them to roll around and play in their own feces is not a solution. Any person who argues otherwise deserves to never own a pet. Ever.

Anyways, Chudnut here is operating under the business name Paws and Tails 911 and is still claiming their mission is to “save a dog and educate a human.” Well I am here to educate all you Connecticut turtle riders, do not trust this want to be Cesar Milan to train your dog, and DEFINITELY do not let him board your dog.

And he is looking to open a new location and accepting donations from poor uninformed souls:

He killed his own dog also, not sure if that had been mentioned, didn’t want to spend the money so he strangled it to death and then watched a movie…

The USA should start harvesting dogs and selling the meat, or at least use it to feed the welfare recipients. Cats and dogs are food too.

Thank you for posting this. I donated a lot of money and food and bedding and toys for the dogs he was “training”. He took in a couple from CT . I feel so stupid. I thought he was helping them. To find out that this is how they were cared for makes me sick. I live dogs and I rescued 2 pits that I love tremendously. I also gave a boxer. I never would gave helped to perpetuate his cruelty if I had known.

I gave my dog Tbone to Gunner. He seemed good with him. He said he found a home for him. Never heard anything more about him. I hope he is ok

I would like to strongly reiterate that Ryan Chase, of Chase K9 Services, is in no way shape or form, in the same category as the guy. Ryan has a proven track record of working WITH rescues to help rehabilitate tougher to place dogs. I was very disappointed to see Ryan’s name even mentioned in the same sentence as this guys name.

Why don’t you ask Almost Home Rescue, a Rhode Island rescue in business for 20+ year, why they included his name. Better yet, go to the Almost Home Rescue fb page, look for the pink meme and read the explanations.

Ryan lived in Woonsocket for some time in the summer/fall of 2014 and one of the dogs he was training bit the woman who owned the house where Ryan lived. The dog bit her in the face and she needed surgery. Ryan asked the woman to say a stray dog bit her. Around the same time, Ryan was training a dog named Ruffix. After training was completed and Ruffix was adopted, he bit someone and had to be rehomed. I believe Ruffix was regime’s twice due to biting issues.

And I understand there was an issue with a dog named Kiki. She was quite aggressive and Ryan was her trainer. No one is quite sure what happened to her, but you might want to ask Ryan.

        1. Heidi

My comment was made based on my personal and recent experience with Ryan. I stand behind that and still strongly believe he is not in the same category as the subject of this article.
