The interim principal of David Prouty High School, disgraced former Jacob Hiatt Elementary School principal Patricia Jordan, has arbitrarily suspended math teacher and former DP athletic director Chuck Fahey for 30 school days without pay. This is all part of their “investigation,” which has cost the taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees, to find out what happened to some money in the “student activities fund,” which the district is in charge of .
We have been following this story for a while and the longer it goes the more insane it gets. The School Committee, headed by a man (Kevin Hayes) who has been fined by the State Ethics Committee for trying to use his position as a selectman to break the law, has specifically gone after Mr. Fahey because he would not hire Chairman Hayes’ wife to coach the field hockey team. Since putting Fahey “under investigation,” meant he could no longer by the AD (but yet was still allowed to teach math, which makes TONS of sense) Hayes brought in an interim scab AD who immediately hired his wife to coach not only field hockey but indoor track. Neither team won a single game and they finished in dead last at the Southern Worcester County League Championship meet.
If you’re keeping score at home, the Hayes family made out quite well from this financially, despite the fact that Kevin’s wife is an unqualified loser who has no idea how to coach sports. The kids, who the SC is supposed to be working in the best interests of, got shafted with an incompetent coach that nobody wanted.
Anyway, we’ve looked over all the documents regarding this particular suspension and it is insane. Not only is he being suspended for 30 days WITHOUT PAY, this father and husband is also being forced to write a check to the school for $2,700, AND must give a public apology or he will be terminated.
And for what? Well, according to the documents we saw, Mr. Fahey met with the district’s high priced lawyers at Merrick O’Connell, and he was asked the following question,
“Did you use student activities funds to buy a teammate member’s mother, who was dying of cancer, an edible arrangement?”
Wait….what?? This is the best they could find? He’s using this fund, whose disbursements are all approved by the district, to help brighten the day of a student’s mother who is dying of cancer? You can’t invent a bigger grinch than Kevin Hayes, Tracy Crowe, and Vinny Cloutier.
Oh yea, and did we mention THERE IS NO MISSING MONEY??!! After an exhaustive witch hunt to prove that Mr. Fahey was stealing money from the fund to buy himself lavish things, these high priced law firms found nothing. So instead they focused on a vending machine in the gym that Mr. Fahey had the keys to. They PROJECTED that he stole $2,700 from the machine, because this is the number they arbitrarily determined the machine should be made. Sure, they have no proof or evidence that this happened, but it’s the best they could come up with on short notice. Sounds like enough for a 30 day unpaid suspension.
Anyway, there’s a lot of anti-teacher people out there who think that teachers have some sort of unlimited protection because of the union. LOL. These people are dumb. Please laugh at them because the only way they will learn is to be mocked and humiliated. Meanwhile this guy is losing 1/6 of his paycheck, being forced to give an emasculating fake apology, and has to pay $2,700 for something he did not do. Did I mention that he’s been the AD since the beginning of time and is highly respected in the Southern Worcester County League? But none of that matters.
How this works is that Mr. Fahey does get to appeal to an arbitrator. Now the union pays for an MTA lawyer who will probably have the easiest day’s work they’ve ever had in winning this case. The district will be forced to repay him his withheld salary and then he will sue them for a whole bunch of other stuff and it could cost them a LOT more. But apparently they have money to burn in Spencer so this is no big deal.
Why did the district’s lawyers agree to they will lose it in arbitration? Simple – they’re running up the bill. They don’t care if they win or lose because they get paid either way.
I know some of you are probably saying, there has to be more to the story. No one can possibly be this corrupt and incompetent. But you’d be wrong. This is a SC with a man (Vinny Cloutier) who recently got up at a meeting and accused three teachers of “assaulting” the principal so badly that she was forced to go on unpaid leave. Anyone with a brain would realize that, a) she would’ve filed a police report, and b) she wouldn’t be on UNPAID leave if she was really assaulted. But Cloutier said it anyway because he thinks people are dumb enough to believe. And in Spencer, there are PLENTY of morons. After all, they elected this school board.
I’m not kidding either. Here’s a quote from some local moron named Leann Lund, when she first found out that he tax dollars are being used to investigate innocent teachers so that Kevin Hayes wife could coach field hockey:
“You really wonder what’s going on and who’s doing what,” she said, adding that she thinks the students are the victims of the situation.
Yes Leann Lund, students are the victims. They’re the victims of selfish administrators looking to line their own pockets. And they’ve convinced you that the TEACHERS are the real reason your kids are suffering, because they know you’re not a very smart person. And they know that there are lots of other people like you in Spencer who will believe the bullshit and easily disprovable lies that they are spewing. Leann, you deserve what is happening to your town right now. You did this. You are just as bad as they are.
Here’s the worst part. Fahey teaches math, which is an MCAS tested subject. As a result of this suspension he will miss not only the test itself, but the days leading up to it. This is the most critical time of year for kids. They need their teacher. But today, on the first day of his suspension, they don’t even have a sub in his classroom. Ya got that? NO SUB!!! There is no plan to bring in a qualifed math teacher in his absence. The kids continue to suffer at David Prouty because of selfish, awful “human beings” like Patricia Jordan, Kevin Hayes, Tracy Crowe, Bob Cirba, and Vinny Cloutier. And when the MCAS scores drop in math because of this, the teachers will be blamed for it.
We spoke with one parent who was pretty upset about this. She has called the superintendent’s office ten times in the past week, but has not received a return call. Despite the fact that her taxes pay the superintendent and SC. They work for her. They are screwing over her kid. But they don’t feel like they owe her anything.
Spencer continues to be the most insane town on Earth.

Teachers of Spencer… follow the lead of our brothers and sisters in Chicago. If the district refuses to honor the contract… GO OUT ON STRIKE. It is about time that the teachers of this country demand respect and say screw you to those who blame us for all of society’s ills.

“Work to rule” is the best you’ve got, and that ain’t going to do much in this situation, especially if the state association isn’t jumping in to help.
I honestly don’t think that too many parents are upset about this. Seriously, how many show up at school committee meetings? How many ask these school committee members when they see them OUTSIDE of the school committee meetings about these shady dealings? Come on people, it’s SPENCER and EAST BROOKFIELD…don’t you guys ever run into these school committee members at Whitco, the post office, Price Chopper, Bayberry Lanes ?
Stop treating these ELECTED officials as some revered hierarchy – drop that Catholic don’t-question-authority mentality and DEMAND a good school system!
Or….go back to Facebook, nod at your kid as he comes in from school and be thrilled the public school system takes care of everything for you.

There are so many outraged parents in Spencer, Myself included. The school board are disgusting money and power hungry PIGS!!! There must be something we can do! I’ve held back until now, but did you know who is to blame for this? The 89% of SPENCER families who are products of a history of generational stupidity. That town has been messed up for as long as I can remember.
Can’t they (or the minority of E. Brookfield people with children at Prouty) start pounding the phone lines at the Dept. of Elem. and Secondary Education?
Good thing that Mr. Fahey is certified to teach math, which is a high need area…hopefully he’ll find a better job in a town with more sense..
The Union has been involved. Constantly. The number of grievances that have been filed because the administration REFUSES to honor a contract they negotiated is APPALLING.
The principal just does as she pleases, or more accurately, as Crowe,Hayes, and Cloutier direct her, and says to teachers, “If you don’t like it, file a grievance.”
It is not a happy place to be a student or a teacher.
It seems that at that point, couldn’t the union get the state association, or a state labor relations entity, involved?
People tell me not to wish away my high school years but these people are an absolute joke. Hayes & Crowe never fails to piss me off at every little thing they do. This is why I can’t wait to leave this pathetic district next year.
Look at all the multi bedroom homes for sale in town on Zillow. People can’t sell them for anywhere near what they are worth. People with kids are looking elsewhere to buy homes and it’s killing our property values,although our taxes automatically go up around 2% every year. The school system is a reflection of the town we live in and the people in charge need to go. The blue house needs to be gutted! (With the exception of the room Tracy Crowe had remodeled)

This school system needs fixing fast and on so many levels. I hope the best for Mr. Fahey and have faith that he will be exonerated but it is unfortunate that he will and has endured so much. I am also very bothered about the fact that our poor little kids have no playground equipment. From what I gather broken hoola-hoops and balls are the extent of their equipment. They are not allowed on the grass because of safety reasons (there is no fence along the outskirts of the woods). So for safety reasons they play and run around on hardtop. I know that there are far worse issues than this but in my opinion the playground is an integral part of their social growth. It is what many people remember about their early school years. It gives these little kids something to look forward to away from drudgery of schoolwork. I have never heard of an elementary school that has no playground. Who would move here by choice and think “hey that’s seems like a great school I want my child to go there?” The first thing many look at is the playground. And unfortunately it really is a good school with great teachers and staff.

There is no doubt the actions of the SC and Mr. Hayes are criminal, these are the type of individuals who are destroying the fabric of the country we once knew for their personal gain. Impressive reporting. During the whole TBS reporting of this story I keep thinking someone here has very close ties to the system. The inside info is very impressive.
Oh, and you should definitely post a clarification stating that this is NOT an April Fool’s Day joke!
