It’s wonderful that the Andover High School hockey team has finally gotten their coach back, but there’s still some unfinished business. Like…..why does superintendent Shelley Berman still have a job that pays him $228,000 a year??!!! Why did the Massachusetts Association of Superintendents and the Massachusetts Association of School Committees write letters endorsing the superintendent despite his abuse of power and lying to the media and parents? Just to review some of Shelley Berman’s major transgressions:
- He wrote an unprofessional six page letter, as a superintendent, demanding that the principal and athletic director play every kid in a game against Acton-Boxboro
- He shamed a 14 year old child, and used the kid’s name in order to bad mouth his abilities as a hockey player so that his son Dale could get more ice time
- He lied about his hockey acumen, since he’s never coached hockey a day in his life, and claimed to know more than the coach did
- In order to convince the principal that he knew what he was talking about he lied about being a division 1 athlete who finished 4th in the Big 10 at Wisconsin, when it turned out he was on the fencing team and did not participate in the Big 10 championships
- He lied when he said that the district “
was told to hold off on its investigation until family services has completed its own.”Because DCF would never tell a school district they can’t investigate an employee, and the district ended up spending thousands of dollars to hire a private firm to investigate one parent’s lies.
- He lied about the contents of the 6 page letter, and lied about having no bias against the coach:
“This has nothing to do with me,” Berman said. “I had nothing to do with making the complaint. My kid was on the team a long while ago. My kid had a good experience. It comes from inaccurate sources who like to report inaccurate things.
This incompetent moron should be setting pins at the bowling alley. Instead he’s making a quarter of a million dollars a year to give his town HORRIBLE press, screw over kids in the district, and destroy the reputations of innocent people, all because he’s still mad that his son Dale just wasn’t very good at hockey. No self respecting School Committee would continue to employ someone like this after such a public relations DISASTER.
But that’s exactly what they’re doing. Shelley Berman first sent this letter out:
“I wrote a letter two years ago as a parent.”
Another lie. You specifically wrote “as a superintendent.” More importantly, the mere fact that you are the superintendent means you don’t get to write letters to your subordinates “as a parent.” Because no matter what prefix you use, the principal and AD are being pressured into doing what you want them to because of the implicit threat that you are to their jobs.
“Although I did not release the letter publicly.”
See that? He’s blaming the whistle blower now. Newsflash – when you write a letter as the superintendent to the principal and AD, you’ve given up any rights you had to confidentiality. The fact that he does’t understand this is and is tasked with running a school system is startling.
“I also regret making an inconsistent remark to a reporter about my son’s experiences on the hockey team.”
Inconsistent remark? What does that even mean? It’s called a LIE!! You lying piece of shit!!
“My practice when it comes to athletic coaching decisions has been to leave those decisions to the AD and principal, as was the case in this situation.”
You specifically told them to play every kid in the game against AB!!! You ended your letter by saying that Coach Kucher was unqualified and should be removed!!
What a Goddamn DISGRACE you are!!
And to make matters worse the corrupt School Committee, led by Sorry Susan McReady, isn’t firing him:
“The question of whether Dr. Berman’s letter was appropriate is a difficult one.”
No. Not it’s not. It’s a very simple one – the letter was inappropriate. End of story.
And no, he is not a normal “parent” who can offer criticism of school staff. He’s in a unique position as the superintendent which disqualifies him from doing so. You DO lose that right solely because you hold a position of authority. It’s called a CONFLICT OF FREAKING INTEREST!!!
“Dr. Berman did not overrule that decision (to keep the coach) or question Principal Conrad’s judgement, even though it would have been within his authority to do so.”
Translation – we’re giving him a cookie because he DIDN’T do something that he had no business doing in the first place. In Andover, we compliment you for being a tyrant, but not going FULL tyrant.
Oh, and they are “troubled” by the fact that the letter became public, but not troubled by the fact that a 14 year old was shamed by the superintendent for the benefit of his own son!! Awesome leaders you have up there in Andover!!
So let me get some things straight…..
You agreed he screwed up when he didn’t tell his boss (the School Committee) that he had a HUGE conflict of interest with the coach, leading to them foolishly announcing that they had faith that he could be impartial.
You agree that he told the press something inaccurate (also known as a lie) when he told the press his kid had a pleasant experience on the hockey team.
You agree that the letter itself was inappropriate.
You agree now that the whole thing was made up, the taxpayers won’t be refunded the money for the investigation, and the school’s image was severely damaged.
But yet you are STILL refusing to fire him? What does it take to get fired in this God forsaken cesspool? All because of his “outstanding leadership?” Da fuq are you talking about? This is the EXACT OPPOSITE of leadership!! This is a man pursuing his own selfish agenda at the expense of innocent kids who just wanna play hockey, and a great coach who just wants to do his job!!
Glad to see the Coach has his job back, but we’re not done with this story yet. I’m telling ya Shelley, you’re better off just negotiation a severance package. You’re not gonna like what comes next. You’re new here, but you’re beginning to understand what we do to people like you. For Dale’s sake, don’t make us destroy you.
