MassliveThe student newspaper at College of the Holy Cross in Worcester is weighing changing its name after campus professors noted they have the same name as the official newspaper of the white supremacist group known as the Ku Klux Klan. In a letter sent to the student newspaper, The Crusader, 48 Holy Cross faculty members urged them to have the discussion in “response to the growing anti-Muslim tensions in our country, and to the fact that the Ku Klux Klan official newspaper shares the same name as our own.” The editors of the 92-year-old student newspaper responded in their own letter on Feb. 24, saying they “share the faculty’s concern” and want to “voice our solidarity.”

“We strive to serve as a vehicle for student opinion and as an avenue for student engagement and dialogue on campus,” they wrote. “Often, that dialogue involves difficult but necessary conversations. Today, the difficult conversation surrounds the use of our own moniker.” The student newspaper once had the name “Tomahawk,” which editors in 1955 changed to “Crusader.” The college’s athletics teams are called “the Crusaders.”

“We look forward to hearing a multitude of perspectives on this complex and multifaceted issue, and we hope that all members of the Holy Cross community will consider submitting their thoughts for publication,” the student editors wrote. “Questions of mission and identity have always been central to the intellectual tradition of the College, and we’d like to thank the above members of faculty for moving this discussion in an important and necessary direction.”

The college’s department chairmen began discussing it at a meeting last year, for instance, right after the KKK’s Crusader endorsed Republican candidate Donald Trump for the presidency. Some people on campus have had more general concerns about the word “Crusader” being used by right-leaning political groups in a way that had “racist overtones,” he added.

In a statement to the Worcester Telegram & Gazette, the college said they are “committed” to a review and dive into the history of the term, “The Crusader.”

I’m so tired of hearing about the Ku Klux Klan. Ya know how many people are in the KKK according to the Southern Poverty Law Center? 5,000. That’s it. In a country of 340 million people, just 5,000 are in the KKK. That’s one out of about every 60,000 people. And that estimate is coming from a group whose sole purpose of existence revolves around exaggerating claims of racism in America.

So then why do we still give a shit about the KKK? What does the KKK even do anymore? Are they lynching black people? Are they having cross burnings in town square? Back before the Civil Rights Movement at least they served a purpose. They were terrible people who used fear and intimidation to keep black people from voting, thus keeping them locked in a system of perpetual inequality. That was back when you could just kill a kid like Emmett Till and face no consequences because black people weren’t allowed to serve on juries.

But now the KKK is nothing more than 5,000 losers of zero significance. So how many possible subscribers can their shitty newsletter even have? They don’t even have a freaking WEBSITE!!! Why the fuck does anyone care about a newsletter that has to be hand delivered to you by a paper boy????!!! It’s madness.

The KKK has existed since the 19th century, as has Holy Cross. The KKK has called their irrelevant periodical that no one reads “The Crusader” for much longer than Holy Cross has called their campus newspaper “The Crusader.” But the fact that they shared a name wasn’t a problem until now, because the language police are trying to ban words that have any sort of affiliation with an outdated group of white trash that has no real political or legal power?

OK.

crusader-kkk-trump

Literally NO ONE has ever associated the KKK with Holy Cross. Until Donald Trump was elected President. Because that’s ultimately what his is all about. The Trump effect. If Hillary Clinton was President then this would not be an issue.

And let’s be honest, this has nothing to do with the KKK. It has everything to do with the fact the Crusades were a religious battle between Christians and Muslims a thousand years ago, and we have a President who is extremely good at preying off of people’s fears that most Muslims can’t be trusted. This isn’t about the KKK. It’s about the PC police once again trying to get rid of mascots that hurt people’s feelings. Because make no mistake about it – the mascot is next. It’s only a matter of time. You cannot give an inch to these people, because it’s never enough. Ever.

Here’s an idea for Holy Cross students and professors – take ownership of “The Crusader.” Make it great again. Why should YOU change the name of your newspaper because a group of 15 ragtags from Arkansas print a newsletter that no one reads? You’re Holy Cross. You produce Supreme Court Justices, award winning journalists, brilliant doctors, world class athletes, and members of congress. And what does the KKK produce? A newsletter that has less readership than the InCity Times. But yea, you guys are the ones who should change. Very brave of you.

If they are really going through with this then they should take the word cross out of their name because it illicits an image of an actual cross which when placed on a persons lawn and set on fire can mean only one thing. The word hole often comes up in porn and is therefore very sexist so that needs to go too.

Sorry, Holy Cross produces the people you write blogs about – like this one. That’s it nowadays.

The KKK is alive and well and has many members. It is called the Democratic Party. The inventors of generational welfare which has done more damage to poor people and black people than the KKK, slavery, and even crack cocaine combined. It gave them dependence for crumbs from their masters. And the victims never know better. Their captives tell them that those mean Republicans with the jobs are their enemies. And they settle for crumbs.

Only Jeopardy contestants from Massachusetts would have known that the KKK had a newspaper with this name. The rest of us only associate the “Crusaders” with Holy Cross. You people do more harm than good to the world. Shut up.

So Crusader is a trigger. Which will be the next to go, “Holy” or “Cross”, both obvious triggers?

Only 48 faculty members urged them to have this discussion? There are hundreds of faculty members at Holy Cross. That means as many as 200 or more faculty members thought this was a joke and refused to participate. But in 2017, one overly sensitive person outweighs the common sense of thousands of others.

Think the spoiled kids have to leave their fort on the hill, to start with. The KKK is totally irrelevant now, more than ever. Their newspaper has been around forever, with very few knowing it existed. Kids, leave the fort and help the needy in Worcester. You’re thinking way too much and blinded by the PC rule makers.

Betcha at least half of those 48 professors were also spotted wearing pink vagina hats at the women’s march. Where have all the Catholic professors gone?

    • Chris
      March 16, 2017 at 11:27 am

Most of the Catholic professors are either retired or buried in the Jesuit Cemetery on campus (Yes, when the Jesuits were practicing Catholics).

Why don’t they just turn the newspaper into a freakin coloring book each week? No contests, though. Everyone is a winner!! All coloring matters.

I think it’s not enough to change the name of the newspaper. They’ll have to change the name of the school as well to satisfy the idiots.

“48 Holy Cross faculty members urged them to have the discussion in “response to the growing anti-Muslim tensions in our country … we have a President who is extremely good at preying off of people’s fears that most Muslims can’t be trusted.”

Scary. But, I guess it’s more important for one side to play language police. And the other side to clutch their pearls when an org acquiesces to that policing. Yikes.

“You produce Supreme Court Justices, award winning journalists, brilliant doctors, world class athletes, and members of congress.” Wow, all that from one student newspaper. Impressive.

But, I can’t really hold a candle to what Paul Larson said.

I used to belong to the Klan. Great organization. I moved up the ladder in my community quite quickly because of my membership. Ha! Speaking of members…we used to do a circlejerk on friday evenings. Man with the biggest johnson won a chicken dinner! Of course I always lost. Hell, I always came in last place but oh the pure joy of holding another man’s peepee in my small hands. What a brotherhood, miss those days.

Anyone here watch Archer? Remember how the characters worked for ISIS? After ISIS became a thing in Syria/Iraq they changed the show to working for the CIA.

  • Paul Larson
    March 15, 2017 at 4:42 pm

    I read them both…

I like the Klan’s more… Holy Cross’ is just too damn preachy and, frankly, racist, homophobic and Islamophobic.

The Klan has a no non-sense straight forward writing style. No hidden agenda. Refreshing in today’s society.
