Press HeraldThe last player to leave the New Hampshire dugout Friday was Dan Margolis, who never made it into a 7-6 victory by South Portland American in the semifinals of the Little League Baseball New England Regional. Despite a mandatory rule requiring every player to have at least one turn at bat, New Hampshire Manager Jim O’Connell opted to send six starters to the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning in a last-ditch effort to stave off elimination.

“I tip my cap to those guys,” O’Connell said of the Maine champs, who rallied from deficits of 3-0 and 5-4 to win a third straight elimination game and reach Saturday’s championship game against Connecticut. “They’re resilient. They keep coming back, never quit.”

Little League officials reminded O’Connell that all 13 players on his roster must bat at least once. Instead, trailing 7-5, he kept Margolis on the bench. After two hard-hit outs to center, Logan Simmons doubled and scored after consecutive singles to make it 7-6 before a foul pop ended the game. O’Connell said Margolis declined an opportunity to bat first in the bottom of the fourth, causing the manager to wonder if “he wasn’t feeling good.”

“We gave him an opportunity in the fourth inning,” said O’Connell, who faced a two-game suspension had New Hampshire advanced. “He chose not to hit. So then waiting for the right time to get him in in the sixth, and to put him in a situation where (it was) do-or-die with the game, I didn’t feel it would be very fair.”

It’s New Hampshire. What did you expect? The Granite State certainly is having an All-Star week at Turtleboy.

For the record I think this is a stupid rule that Little League has. Not everyone needs to play. They’re 12 years old. They’re competing for a spot in the LL World Series where they will compete against the best players in the country. They’re pretty close to being in high school. Sorry kids, not everyone plays.

However, the fact of the matter is that they went into the tournament knowing the rules. Everyone plays. A real manager figures out how to work around that. You put the kids who can’t hit in as pinch runners. This is LLWS 101 stuff.

Not this hardo coach though. He plays to win the game. Dude was willing to take a two game suspension (which would mean missing the Championship against Connecticut and the first game of the LLWS if they made it that far) in order to win the game. Meanwhile this poor kid is sitting there with his helmet on saying, “put me in coach.”

I do feel bad for him, and if I were him I wouldn’t wanna hit either. I SUCKED at baseball. No one wanted me on their team. But baseball is such an individual sport in that sense because it’s literally just you up there by yourself. They were down to their last out of their LLWS with two guys on base. He represents the winning run. He’s obviously not their best hitter since he didn’t play the entire game. This kid is me 20 years ago. And no way in hell did he want to play at that point.

The worst part about this is the fact that the coach sold him out with this bullshit excuse:

“We gave him an opportunity in the fourth inning,” said O’Connell, who faced a two-game suspension had New Hampshire advanced. “He chose not to hit. So then waiting for the right time to get him in in the sixth, and to put him in a situation where (it was) do-or-die with the game, I didn’t feel it would be very fair.”

He chose not to hit? Since when do players get to choose? Since when do players dictate managerial decisions in baseball? (unless they’re named Hanley) Dude, you’re the friggin coach!! If you tell him to hit in the fourth inning then he hits in the fourth inning. End of discussion.

Of course that’s obviously a lie. The kid was probably nervous and scared since he’s 12 years old, and when the coach came to him to tell him he was gonna bat he said something like, “I’m not good enough coach.” A real man in that situation tries to instill confidence in the kid, acts like the adult, and puts the kid up to bat.

Not Jim O’Connell though. He plays to win the game. A kid’s game. He wanted the kid to tell him that he didn’t want to hit because it would give him a way out. He could blame it on the kid instead of himself. What a gutless dooshnozzle.

By the way, I was excited to see a local team (Holden) win the Massachusetts State Championship. Would’ve been cool to see them in Williamsport. Unfortunately they were the first team eliminated and they lost to Vermont. Didn’t see that one coming. Vermont is there to be a practice game for real states. Oh well, nice try anyway Holden. At least your manager let all of you play.

P.S. Love the pants on this pitcher from Maine:

Saggy pants need a comeback. Damn kids these days with the skinny jeans.

I’m amazed, I must say. Seldom do I come across a blog that’s
both educative and interesting, and let me tell you, you’ve hit the nail on the head.
The problem is something that too few men and women are speaking
intelligently about. I’m very happy that I stumbled across this during my search for something regarding this.

This is what happens when kids who don’t belong on teams get put on them for political reasons. This coach should be celebrated for risking a 2 game suspension so little johnny didn’t ruin it for the other kids. . He put the good of the team before himself.

As a youth baseball standout I was often scouted by colleges and the pros. A superficial life of sports, traveling, women and partying wasn’t for me. I received a full boat to a prestigious engineering school and graduated in the top 5%. Went strait to graduate school completed a Masters with thesis in 3 years.

I now sit in a beige office and manage employees that call in on fridays, don’t meet deadlines and drink to much at company events. Don’t be like me, in the end it’s pussy that counts, good times and living like a pirate with a get out of jail free card.

Children this age shouldn’t be involved in any kind of high stakes competition. By the time the pressure causes a child to become physically ill any rational adult would realize that it’s time to let the kids step back and just enjoy the game. All organized sports should repick teams any time any one team becomes too dominant

Hey, Stinky, I bet you were the kid who would wear your Mom’s panties and jerk off rather than go out and do some real physical sports activity, like football or baseball, huh? You and your buddies get participation trophies for circle jerks?

For your information I was a three sport athlete (golf, tennis, and cross country) and handled competing rather well. Furthermore I didn’t use the size and strength I gained through sports to show off even if I was the “big man on campus.” Even though I have plenty of ribbons to show for my athleticism I never let it go to my head unlike certain others

that is proper satire, well done sir!

You suck Turtleboy. YOU SUCK. The mandatory play rule is bullshit. BULLSHIT. It’s a regional, not some early season game. If a 12-year old on an all-star team gets his little ego hurt by not playing in an important game, then too bad, he doesn’t need to be playing sports. And this coach was trying to win the game, not satisfy Little League International’s warped rules.

MLB is to blame, too, because players in its all-star game get butthurt when they don’t play despite making six-figure bonuses just for making the team.

A lot of communities won’t send their teams into Little League regionals, because they know Little League rules subvert baseball. The mound is too close to the plate. No stealing bases. Fences are way too short. Why don’t they just set up a machine on the mound if they’re that worried about kids throwing out their arms?

The coach looks the way he acted. A self-absorbed imbecile.

1st off, LLWS isn’t bb & I am tired of all the crap that comes w/it. It is a money grubbing venture that preaches stuff it doesn’t actually present. It is the ultimate participation trophy sport that offers kids pure entitlement. Kids openly cry, show up teammates & the liberals at Disney call it passion & competitiveness. BS, it is all about entitlement, lack of sportsmanship & only about them. LLWS please either fold or play bb…60′ mound, longer bases, stealing, coaching & good parenting. THESE kids are 1-2 yrs from starting HS, right? And, the last time I checked “there was no crying in baseball “

Thought kids were so doped up on prescription drugs they didn’t get nervous or anything else. Have the kid’s Doctor give the kid the proper dose of xanax for a 12 year old and let him hit or if I remember correctly the drinking age is 8 in NH. A couple of forties and he’ll calm right down.

My first reaction is that O’Connell is a dick, and poor Cole, etc, etc.

    After further review:
    1) I don’t think this guy O’Connell has seen a day in the gym, let alone played a sport at any level
    2) Cole made the team cause his daddy is on the LL board. Every Kid understands this situation.
    3) Faced with the juxtaposition of “Winning Is Everything” and “Everyone Gets a Trophy”, I vote for Winning. Maybe I’m a dick too, but our kids are too Fucking soft these days. Not everyone wins. Fucking deal.

The first paragraph says every kid must bat according to the rules. How would using him as a pinch runner fulfill that requirement?
