Since the shooting outside of La Cava yesterday, local social media groups have been posting non-stop about the increased murder, drug and robbery crimes being committed in and around Lawrence and people are outraged. Police identified 40 year old Arielis Valdez as the victim of the fatal shooting that also left one man hospitalized last night. Most of us have been waiting for Mayor Daniel Rivera to release a statement to the public in regards to the 10th shooting this month and what his course of action will be going forward. We need a plan and we need it immediately and it certainly doesn’t help that 99% of discussions regarding Lawrence almost immediately result in someone pulling the race card and letting that overshadow the issue at hand. (Here’s looking at you, 978 Facebook groups!) Cut that shit out already.
Chief James Fitzpatrick is set to call an emergency meeting today with numerous operational captains and reps from the Massachusetts State Police Crime Prevention and Control.
Uh, you think?
Mayor Rivera and the LPD have repeatedly assured citizens that they have been cracking down on drug trafficking and violent crime. Yes, there has absolutely been an increase in arrests and seizures of narcotics but obviously more needs to be done. 10 shootings in 17 days is out-fucking-rageous and although LPD has stepped up their patrol measures we have people dying in the streets every single day. Last month Rivera proposed redirecting $260,000 that was originally set aside for a gun buyback program and using the money to hire 3 drug/gang intervention workers.
While that sounds wonderful on paper do any of you really think that’s going to make a dent in the number of vicious crimes happening on a daily basis? Something tells me that scumbags who tote illegal firearms and boost narcotics for a living aren’t going to turn over a new leaf and start singing Kumbaya while holding hands and frolicking down Water Street.
So of course in his statement released today Rivera blamed recent violence on drug sales, domestic violence and “Out of towners acting out in Lawrence.”
First of all, OBVIOUSLY what’s going on inside the city has everything to do with drug sales. Anyone who has basic cable or a smartphone can easily look up just how many drug arrests have been made in 2017. No electronics? Have a set of eyeballs? Then take a leisurely drive down 28 and you’ll get a good idea of the bullshit that’s going on.
Second of all, the whole “out of towners” argument has been regurgitated over and over again and doesn’t change a goddam thing. N.H. Governor Chris Sununu blasted Massachusetts sanctuary cities and targeted Lawrence in particular for the gross amount of opiates coming into New Hampshire. New Hampshire currently has the 2nd highest opioid rate per capita in the United States so really, can you blame him for wanting to shut that shit down? I’ve personally never been a huge fan of Sununu (along with a lot of other crooked N.H. government officials) and tend to roll my eyes and envision flicking him in his stupid face when I hear his voice but drugs don’t magically appear in New Hampshire. Last time I checked the fentanyl fairy doesn’t visit drug addicts and leave them presents under their pillows. Where do most of the drugs in N.H. come from? They’re trafficked up through M.A., typically from N.Y. and funneled in through southern N.H.
Sununu has gone off the deep end before in his rants to go over the Mass state border and start hunting down drug traffickers but unfortunately for Chris, the state of New Hampshire has absolutely no jurisdiction to do so. The only way to pull that off would be to form a regional task force with the federal Drug Enforcement Administration and at this point I’m all for it. We continue to waste billions of taxpayers dollars and it seems like lately we aren’t even breaking even, nevermind making steps towards remedying the problem. Stop giving criminals a slap on the wrist for drug crimes and violent offenses. Mandate heavier prison sentences and court ordered rehab longer than 30 days. Get rid of sanctuary cities and stop having more sympathy than indifference when it comes to drug addicts and what we allow them to get away with because of their disease. How many times does a repeat offender get to treat the court system like a fucked up carousel ride before we say enough is enough? All we have continued to do is dance around the problem and try to appease everyone but it’s not working and we’re tired of seeing people murdered.
