WCVB: Four protesters identifying themselves as members of the Black Lives Matter group were arrested following a demonstration for affordable housing in Cambridge. According to police, several protesters chained themselves to the front door of City Hall at 5:30 a.m. They remained chained to the doors when City Hall opened for business at 8 a.m. Protesters were outside the city hall beginning at 5:30 a.m. They were chained to the doors when it opened for business at 8 a.m. The protesters and their group said they were at City Hall calling for more affordable housing in Cambridge.
“Gentrification is killing Cambridge and the people of color who live here are disappearing,” said a woman at the demonstration. Currently, 11 percent of housing in Cambridge is considered affordable. The group said they want to see the number raised to 25. Cambridge Mayor E. Denise Simmons said the city is working on it.
“We’re all here for the same reason, which is how do we keep Cambridge diverse? How do we keep Cambridge economically welcoming to all residents everywhere? So I stand with you, I applaud your efforts,” Simmons told the people at the rally. Cambridge City Councilor Marc McGovern said 49 percent of Cambridge’s middle class has left the city in the past decade because the cost of living has gotten so high. The City Council said they hope to have an agreement on affordable housing by the end of the year.
So let me get this straight. Rich white people wanna move to Cambridge because it’s so desirable. This then makes home prices increase, and rent increases with it. As a result of this they inadvertently forced low income people, many of whom are not white, to leave Cambridge, and thus Cambridge has become whitewashed. Now these same white people who created this situation are freaking out because their city has become gentrified and they can no longer brag to all their friends at the organic coffee shop about how diverse their neighborhood is.
Luckily Turtleboy has a solution for these white guilt ravaged Cambridge residents – everyone sells their home to a person of color. Just find a nice family that’s not white, and take whatever they can afford to give you. Sure, you’re probably gonna end up losing hundreds of thousands of dollars because you’re gonna have to drastically underprice your house. But it will all be worth it because you did your part to make Cambridge more diverse.
Boom. Diversity solved.
This is the reality of the situation. There is no way to make an expensive city like Cambridge affordable so long as demand for housing is high. Simple economics tells you that when demand is high and supply is low, prices go up. And since we live in a world where the earning gap between people of color and white folks is substantial, you effectively are pricing out black people by buying a house in Cambridge.
And the best part about this whole protest is that almost everyone involved in this “protest” for affordable housing is white.
They live there because their parents are all upper middle class/rich limousine liberals who talk a big game about embracing diversity, but yet choose to live across the river from Boston. Obviously rent is gonna cost a lot of money in Cambridge because it’s so close to the city. This is how real estate works. Try buying a house in Bergen County NJ, or Manhattan, or outside of Washington DC, or anywhere near San Francisco or Los Angeles or Chicago. Let me know how that goes. If you want a nice piece of affordable housing then move to Indiana or Texas. For $100,000 you can get a 2,000 square foot house with four bedrooms. Life is good.
But instead they just HAVE TO live in a city where demand for housing is high, and therefore prices go up. This is Liz Warren’s house in Cambridge:
It’s a nice house, but it’s not exactly gonna be featured on Cribs anytime soon. Nevertheless, the mere fact that it is in Cambridge, which is an extremely desirable place to live due to it’s geographical location, makes it worth about $2.4 million.
Anyway, let’s take a quick look-see at their “demands“:
We, Black Lives Matter Cambridge, firmly believe that housing is a right.
Stop right there. Housing is not a right. Rights, such as free speech do not cost money. They are things that we are born with. Housing costs money. Luckily our free freedoms allow us to purchase housing that we can afford.
Every person in the city of Cambridge should have access to affordable housing. Unfortunately, this is not our reality. Housing is not affordable in Cambridge and there is a lack of access to affordable housing.
They do have access to housing they can afford. However, that housing is in Worcester, not Cambridge.
As a result, we’ve seen members of our communities move to surrounding towns such as Somerville, Everett, Malden etc. in search of more affordable housing.
You mean they have to live in Somerville or Everett or Malden where rent is cheaper?? God forbid!!! People should be able to live wherever they want to without thinking about what they can afford. You know where Turtleboy would like to live? Southboro, Acton, Lincoln, Sudbury, Mansfield, Manchester, Andover, or basically any place inside of 495 that isn’t Brockton. But we just can’t afford it, so we live within our means where property value is cheap – Worcester. This is what responsible adults do. They live within their means. We do not have a “right” to live wherever we want. We have a “right” to live wherever we can afford to live.

We’ve seen lists for Section 8 vouchers close and some units are still too expensive even with a voucher. We’ve seen beloved community businesses close up after being bought by developers. We’ve seen our elected officials accepting campaign donations from developers, while housing is still too expensive.
Oh, you mean people who are living in Section 8 housing can’t afford to live in one of the wealthiest and most exclusive cities in the state? Talk about oppression!!
This is not a reality we wish to live in. We are here to envision a different reality. We envision a world where all of our people are housed in homes fit for human beings. We envision a world where housing is stable and reliable.
Oh, I’m sorry, are homes in Worcester not “fit for human beings?” Yea, you’re not elitist douchebags or anything like that.

Thus, we demand the following:
LOL, “demand.”
1. Inclusionary Housing Program
We demand that the City Council require marketrate residential developers, of more than 9 units, make at least 25% of the units affordable.
They have made them “affordable.” If you can afford to live there then you live there. Problem solved.
2. MIT Housing
We demand MIT is given a permit that allows them to build housing for it’s 5,500 graduate and postgraduate students who live off campus. Housing for those MIT students opens up more units for existing housing and provide family size units.
Translation – force MIT to spend a shit ton of money building housing they don’t need so that black lives matter can evict them and let people who have no business living in Cambridge live in Cambridge.
3. Use Free Land
We demand that free land, such as parking lots and other city properties, are not sold to private developers but are used to build affordable housing and develop public spaces.
Yea, why would a city government sell public land to private developers who will pay taxes to the city when they can build “affordable housing” for people who won’t pay any taxes at all? I’m genuinely curious where these morons think money for social programs comes from. They’re always talking about taxing the rich more. Well who do you think the rich are? They’re the developers, and cities want them to do business there so they can steal more money from them in taxes.
4. Establish a Rent to Own Program
We demand that a Rent to Own program is established in Cambridge.
Renting and owning are opposites. You cannot rent to own. It is an oxymoron. There is something similar to “renting to own” known as “paying a mortgage.” Ya see, every month Turtleboy writes a check to a bank, instead of a landlord. It’s slightly more than what normal rent costs because, a) TB has to pay for property taxes, and b) banks charge a shitload of interest. But it’s cool because a portion of what I pay every month goes right back to me. I own that much of the house.
We believe that there needs to be a better and more defined pathway to homeownership for low income Cantabrigians.
Luckily there is a more defined pathway to homeownership for low income Cantabrigians – moving to Worcester. I know, I know, you’re above that. Worcester is way beneath you. But rents here are affordable and we have plenty of low skilled jobs that fit your needs.
Anyway, this is just so typical of idiots today. They think they’re entitled to things. They want it, therefore they must have it. And if you point out facts like we just did then you’re racist. This is why the entire city of Cambridge needs to be thrown off a cliff.

Clearly, some black lives don’t matter . . . .
Nobody mentioned high property taxes, which is a legal way to keep the trash out.
Those who feel the housing situation in Cambridge is unfair should open their houses up and rent rooms out, or simply live on one floor and rent the other floors out. That would be a much more efficient use of space.
“This is not a reality we wish to live in. We are here to envision a different reality.”
I think rational people call it Fantasy
I’m just here for the Kevin Lynch Comments!
Kevin can’t answer right now. He is very distraught over the so called threat mad against his elderly mother. He will be visiting here for a while
Lol me too
Make certain that Elizabeth Warren is in her house when the city of Cambridge is thrown off a cliff.
Oh yeah …… and Henry Louis Gates Jr. is sitting in his home at that time, too.
That never gets old.
What he said. Thanks, great video.
So why don’t they just share their home with a ‘family of color’? Let them pay what they can afford and provide them a room in your pristine home? Problem solved.
You know what? I work like 2 jobs to live in my house in Worcester. Is it something you would find in Cambridge? No. But part of me is glad I’m live in Worcester so I’m not surrounded by the ignorance of these people, who will never know what hard work is because of their mommy and daddy pipeline. How about ending that pipeline? Nevermind the school to prison pipeline-how about the mommy & daddy to ignorant moron child pipeline.
We demand that the city ban the display of all lampposts, lawn ornaments and other such items that display a smiling black male holding a lantern or other such device. Wait a minute, I think Cambridge already passed that one.
L.M.A.O. !!!!
Dumb-ass morons
Amen TB. These darlings do not understand because to study economics you need advanced math and the ability to read graphs. The idiots are majoring in the diaspora of mosquitos. A teacher trolling to add students to their useless department told them that they are victims and that the world owes them everything. I will agree to suspend the reality of the market when the physics department dumps gravity.
When Trump is elected there will be plenty of affordable housing after he deports all the illegals that are living in section 8 housing. Like Obamas auntie,Tuti Fruiti. Boom problem solved Cambridge vote Trump
Auntie Zeituni Onyango is dead, bro. Died two years ago. His douchebag drunk-driving uncle, Onyango “Omar” Obama, is sadly still with us, living in Boston.
These people need to grow up and be adults. Wtf.
I DEMAND someone pay for my tummy tuck immediately , because I have a gut and I do not want to physically sweat it out at the gym. I deserve to have a flat tummy like most Skinny people that watch what they eat … Wait will this work if I’m white and still broke? I once read about something called “white privledge” well I guess it’s time I receive some benefits ?! Now… Does anyone know where the privledge office is located??
Do they no longer teach basic economics in schools? It seems that no one understands the laws of supply and demand anymore.
FIGHT FOR $15!!! – resulting in people with low/marginal work skills becoming completely unemployed because businesses can no longer afford to pay them. They either get fired, or the business closes completely.
TAX THE RICH & CORPORATIONS!!! – resulting in corporations/business owners passing the increased tax rates to the consumers, raising prices for all.
MANDATORY HEALTHCARE PROVIDED BY ALL EMPLOYERS WITH 50+ FT EMPLOYEES!!!! – resulting in people losing jobs or hours because employers can’t afford premiums, and they need to bring the number of FT employees down.
There are so many more examples. What is so hard to understand?
Well said sir, well said!! Simple economics, why can’t people understand this?
Ok… how many of these kids go to Harvard, Northeastern, or MIT??? Just ask mommy and daddy for a raise in their allowance for rent…
Change their lock and leave them there for the weekend
Hahaha, great idea.
