This Day In History: Ulysses Grant Runs Train On Dixie, Murica Wins Another War, Seattle Goes Crazy, Hoover’s So Bad They Amend The Constitution

Here’s some stuff that happened on February 6.

  • 1862 – American Civil War: Forces under the command of Ulysses S. Grant and Andrew H. Foote give the Union its first victory of the war, capturing Fort Henry, Tennessee in the Battle of Fort Henry.

Big time. There’s a bunch of rivers in the Tennessee/Mississippi/Alabama area and taking control of those was essential for victory. Wars are run with supplies, and you can’t get supplies from point A to point B with a bunch of Union dickheads taking over all the forts. The Civil War really pisses me off because it was such a waste of time and everyone know what the outcome was. The Confederacy didn’t have a real navy. You can’t win a war without a navy. They’ll just surround you with boats, bomb the shit out of you, and then starve your families to death. It will get real ugly, a bunch of people will die, everyone eats their pets, and you will lose. What a bunch of knobs. This is why I hate the Confederate flag. It represents a bunch of losers who wasted our time and got a lot of people killed. And for what? Muh states rights? State’s rights to do what? Oh right, enslave black people.

  • 1899 Spanish-American War ends, peace treaty ratified by Senate

Quick, name all the wars in American history. This is the one people forget the most because it only lasted a few weeks and we wiped the floor with them and they have no idea why we fought it in the first place. It was important for a couple reasons though. 1) It established that Europe and their sheisty ways were no longer welcome in this part of the world. Europeans are historically huge assholes, and the Spanish in particular were pretty brutal to their colonies in Puerto Rico and Cuba. 2) It allowed us to set up a naval base in Cuba on Guantanomo Bay. 3) It set the stage for making Puerto Rico an American territory, which is by far the best deal any colony has ever gotten. Puerto Ricans, unlike Mexicans and Dominicans, can come and go from this great country as they please. What a deal! 4) It unfortunately did not grant freedom to the Philippines, which was promised to them, because we wanted to colonize them because of their delicious location near Asian trading routes. The Filipinos didn’t like this and led an insurrection for freedom in which over 100,000 people were killed. Not our finest moment.

  • 1919 1st day of 5-day Seattle general strike

I used to teach my students about 1919 because it was the most insane year in American history. World War 1 ended but thanks to unrestricted immigration and the importation of radical, European ideas (like anarchy and Marxism) had caused legitimate fears about violence and potential revolution here. The Seattle General Strike was one of hundreds of nationwide strikes that paralyzed the city, and was the first strike in American history where the entire labor force of a major city went on strike in solidarity with striking workers (dock workers). It was also organized by radicals and thus was forcefully put down by the Mayor. When ALL workers unite against owners like that it has some striking similarities to the recent Bolshevik Revolution in Russia, which brought in communism. The blowback to 1919 was very similar to the blowback we are seeing 100 years later towards illegal immigration from Latin America, except this time they’re not really important radical political ideas – they’re running away from those kinds of governments.

  • 1933 – The 20th Amendment to the Constitution was declared in effect. The amendment moved the start of presidential, vice-presidential and congressional terms from March to January.

LOL. I love this Amendment, and I used to call it the Hoover Amendment. Today it’s called the lame duck Amendment, because it shortens the “lame duck” period between the election and inauguration of a President. People HATED Herbert Hoover by 1933 because the Depression had gotten so bad, and he seemed so inept at solving it. The problem was that FDR was elected in November of 1932 but would not be inaugurated until March. People couldn’t stomach Hoover for that long so Congress and then 3/4 of the states amended the constitution to get his lame duck ass out of there. This is why inauguration day is now January 20.

The Confederates did have a navy of sorts. Britain’s. The CSA Alabama was made in Britain and did considerable damage. The Brits also provided intelligence and logistics to the South. They had to pay reparations after the war.

People had the idea to film sex as soon as they learned to make movies. The Lumiere brothers invented cinema and filmed the iconic arriving train in 1896. The first porn movie was made the same year.

1919 was also the year I gave the middle finger to the Boston cops when they went on strike.

Why the fuck would we take over Puerto Rico? My dad worked for the Lawrence welfare office, and said it was Teddy Roosevelt’s biggest mistake.
