A Providence man is charged in an unprovoked attack outside a popular waterfront bar that left a Worcester man hospitalized with critical head injuries. Nathan Meyer was outside the Hot Club with two friends on his 29th birthday, waiting for an Uber ride early June 12, when a stranger walked up and cold-cocked him in the face. Meyer fell back and hit his head, leaving him unconscious, his friends told the police. The attacker just walked away, witnesses told police, and got a ride with several other men away from the club.
The brazen attack, without any motive, astonished the police. Meyer, a nurse who grew up in Smithfield, had been out that night while his fiancée celebrated her bridal shower and bachelorette party, said Maj. David Lapatin. He remained hospitalized in critical condition on Friday, nearly two weeks after the assault. His family declined to comment.
“It is an outrage to think that people who come here for a night of entertainment and are law-abiding citizens can be victims of such violence for no apparent reason,” Lapatin said.
Detectives Sgt. Timothy McGann, Theodore Michael and Shawn Maxwell got a license plate, found witnesses and eventually got the name of the suspect, 20-year-old Luis Castillo-Estevez, a local man who was injured last fall in a mysterious shooting. The police searched multiple residences for Castillo-Estevez, until he turned himself in Thursday, Lapatin said.
This is one of the most senseless and disgusting stories we’ve ever seen. It’s just insane that there are people out there who will attack someone for no reason whatsoever. It’s not like this guy was robbed or he had talked shit to the guy previously. His crime was being alive and minding his own business. Could happen to anyone with some of the savages that are out there on the streets. From the GoFundMe page:
This senseless act of violence left Nathan with a fractured skull, arterial bleed, and severe brain swelling. He endured three emergency brain surgeries within his first week of care at Rhode Island Hospital. Each were necessary to save his life. The doctors were unsure if Nathan would survive. Against all odds, however, Nathan continues his fight – nearly one month after being admitted. Although Nathan’s condition continues to improve, this assault will be life altering for both him and his family. Nathan will need several months of intensive rehabilitation therapy; his recovery may take several years. As a Registered Nurse and beloved fiancé, Nathan’s prognosis has been especially devastating.
It is now with heavy hearts that the Meyer family is requesting your help. These donations will ensure the transitionary years moving forward will go as smoothly as possible. Any excess funding will be given to The Brain Injury Association of Rhode Island and/or The Institute for the Study and Practice of Nonviolence of Providence, Rhode Island.
