So today was pretty windy in the morning and as a result Worcester was buried in trash. Not because people throw their trash everywhere, but because we recycle. Because for some reason Worcester is the only city in American that manages to create more trash with a recycling program. The problem is they give us these dinky little bins that Worcesterites load up with every possible paper, plastic, and glass product we can find. Because Worcester people are just cheap like that. Sure, yellow city trash bags only cost $1, but I’ll be damned if I have to use more than one per month. Anything and everything we can put in those bins gets jammed in there.

The problem of course arises if there is any sort of breeze. I was inspired to write this blog while driving down Chandler Street. I was minding my own business when all of a sudden – BAM – the turtlemobile got nailed by a flying bin and decorated with junk mail and Dunkin Donuts iced coffee cups. This is what the aftermath looked like on the West Side:

The primary purpose of bushes in Worcester is to protect your lawns from trash.

Look, this is such an easy fix. Instead of these:

plastic_bin

The city should be handing out these:

images (10)

It’s just common sense. Normal cities that have a recycling program use this because they’re down with common sense like that too. Because there is no point of recycling if it just creates more trash. Drive around Worcester and look at what you say. Shit is everywhere because today wasn’t the first time it was windy.

I’ve heard some people say that it will cost too much money. Luckily in this year’s budget a whole bunch of money just opened up because we will no longer be paying Michael Jerry to take imaginary people’s blood pressure at 41 Piedmont Street. Free bins for everyone!! Go Green. Go Turtle. Boom. Problem solved.

P.S. The only thing worse than the bins are the dooshnozzles who pick them up. Every single week the lazy d-bag who picks up the Turtleboy family’s recycling leaves at least three items on our front lawn. And if you call them out on it you can a face full of sass. It’s a tradition like none other.

facebook a petition!!! to end the yellow /pink bag program and get a normal covered barrel for trash and a normal covered barrel for recyclables. We pay so much! especially us home owners, this is aweful and helps nobody. petition!!!! I will sign, spread the word and forward to city. I miss where I used to live years ago, when I could by normal trash bags and the only requirement from the city was your recyclable wheeled barrel had to be out with the trash every week and be atleast half full for the city to take your trash and your trash could not be overflowing and lids had to be completely closed. I would rather pay a one time deposit for a barrel than deal with all this bag and bin crap every week. its messy, sloppy and non-productive.

What you blogged is true. And the proof is in the pictures. My husband recently had heart surgery and needs to walk 2x/day for cardiac rehab. We got him a “Litter Man gettup” at Home Depot including bucket, shoulder strap, pincer grasper, etc. Twice a day he collects litter in Main South and there’s always more litter every day. He cleans up in the area of Tirrell St., Freeland St., Lowell St., Main St., etc. He is a hero. But I think this implies that people other than the recycling truck workers are making a mess as well.. Incidentally, the neighborhood looks so much more pleasant thanks to Litter Man

Here, we pay a couple clams extra to ‘recycle’. And the garbage guys just throw the ‘recyclables’ in with the rest of trash. Unless you have a giant bin of squashed aluminum cans, they’ll keep that separate. Is there really a market for old newspapers and empty plastic bottles? Look at the landfill, and tell me if you see piles of recyclables.

I got a better idea. Why not get rid of this recycling program and go back to normal trash pickups? Seems like all this program has accomplished is more illegal dumping and trash to spread throughout the this city.

It’s not just 3 decker neighborhoods that are trashed every week. I have been contacting DPW and various city councillors for months now with very little reply. Upper Burncoat (almost constant wind !) street is destroyed every Monday by trash. Otherwise respectable, educated people build a pyramid of lightweight water and juice bottles high above the top of the bin and head away for the day, only to come home later and think everything is great. They just never look down wind at the unfortunate ones.

The whole system sucks. Streets look like a old school landfill at times. The city does a good job picking up the trash bags. But the bins are a joke, Casella is the pits for sure. Has to be a better way in 2016 !

Well the wind has been crazy lately. The wind storm we had a few weeks back blew my bin over, everything went everywhere, and my empty prescription hemorrhoid cream with my name prominently displayed on the packaging ended on my neighbors deck. My neighbor is a sweet little old lady and when she discovered the item she called me up to see how I was doing then began to tell me her years of suffering from the same affliction as a means of comfort. It was embarrassing.

Just kidding. I was just watching Louis C.K. on HBO so I’m in his zone. Seriously though – my bin did end up two streets over during the last hefty wind storm and a kind neighbor returned it to me. I wrote my address on the stupid thing.

That’s why I don’t use those damn bins at all. Oh, there was a time when I did use them. Then some shitfuck stole my bin (twice). I had to pay the city for a replacement only to have it get stolen. Since then, everything goes in the yellow bags. I don’t GAF anymore. It also solves the problem of having trash blow all around the neighborhood.

Here’s the way I look at it: considering the amount in taxes I pay the city yearly, I shouldn’t have to buy city trash bags. My trash should be collected for free. So, you can be sure as you’re born that I’m packing those yellow bags to the brim! Years ago we were able to use any bags we wanted for our trash; clear, black, white – it didn’t matter. Those were the good ol’ days! Then sometime in the early-mid 1990s some hairbrained schmuck decided it would be a good idea to start making residents have to purchase special trash bags in order to get rid of their weekly trash.

Former Mayor Ray Mariano was the main proponent of the current Pay for trash program

He was against it before he was for it. Got elected Mayor by railing agaist the bag fee, promising to eliminate it, then within weeks of being elected, said “well they beat us, and we can no longer fight the bag fees”. Typical.

Your trash blows because of the shitty bins then you get a $200 dollar ticket for “litering” ..

First of all, you are correct. The city should be supplying residents with proper recycling receptacles with lids. However, Worcester is a shithole with trash EVERYWHERE! It is especially bad in areas where there are a lot of rentals/3 deckers. If the city fined residents and landlords and the housing authority stipulated they wouldnt pay your rent if you threw your trash out your window, everyone would win. The city would gain the money from fines, the landlords would better monitor their properties,, the residents would clean up their act, and the rest of us wouldnt have to look at the shithole properties.

I’d like TBS to do another photo story about how disgusting Worcester is. I’d be happy to supply pictures from around town.

The city could recoup some of the cost by only collecting recycling every 2 weeks the same way Holden does.

The bigger issue I see is the number of hills in the city. A gust of wind sweeps down Wrentham Rd, Manhattan Rd, or any other steep street, the bin tips over and two weeks worth of recycling is scattered everywhere.

When I lived in Worcester, I used to watch as my passive-aggressive trash guy would SLING the bins everywhere, (apparently from the body language, on purpose) after emptying them.

As to why won’t Worcester use roll-aways, here are a few ideas:
    1. Complaints that some people will find it difficult to roll them down to the street.
    2. Complaints they will take up too much space during parking bans, or in general.
    3. Some people (yes, talking about you, Vernon Hill) will just stockpile crap in them and never roll them down, call the city asking for more rollaways, and then leave them for the next renter to deal with.
    4. The first time a body is found in one, it’s back to the little bins.

      Let’s not forget that…

people will steal them for personal use

Vagrants will steal them and wheel them around town when their grocery carts are in the shop or it’s raining

and the employees who collect your recyclables are probably union and dealing with receptacles on wheels would go against their contract.

All valId points, TB. The angry, angry men who drive for Casella SLAM these bins down as hard as humanly possible on the pavement in order to crack them, so you can never use them again. Thier goal – less recycling, less work for these dregs. Yeah, TRY calling the DPW so-called Customer “Service ” line. After you call there, you’re gonna need to head over to mosaic for a BP check.

The best way to get the most out of the stupid yellow bags is to use REGULAR trash bags to line your wastebaskets, and then stuff the regular bags that are filled with trash inside the yellow bag. Never line your wastebaskets with the yellow bags. This way a whole weeks worth of trash can be disposed in ONE stupid yellow bag. Its a small victory, but I beat the city every week this way. Less money for Mosaic, the multicultural wellness center and other pseudo organizations.

And you get the can pickers who rummage thru these bins in search of cans. This is illegal and there is a city ordinance against it, but NO ONE at the DPW or the WPD know anything about it. In fact, they tell you the opposite that these pickers HAVE the right to do this. They leave the recycling that you tried to crush down loose and it blows out.
