Former Mayor Ray Mariano wrote this interesting column in the Worcester Sun today, about PCB’s in the Worcester Public Schools. People have been asking us for write about this topic for almost a year now but we’ve been putting it off. PCB’s “have been used as coolants and lubricants in transformers, capacitors, and other electrical equipment because they don’t burn easily and are good insulators.” But we stopped making them in 1977 because evidence showed that they build up in the environment and can cause harmful health effects. And most WPS buildings were built before 1977.

Ray’s wife teaches at Burncoat High School, and in his column he explains how he was skeptical of her when she said that the School Department stopped testing for PCB’s when the initial testing results showed such high numbers, because they were trying to cover up how dangerous things were in the building. Ray didn’t think the administrators would purposely cover something up that endangers teachers and students on a daily basis.

Burncoat_High_School

But he has since changed his mind:

A couple of years later, my wife came home and told me teachers were getting worried because so many of their colleagues had contracted some form of cancer. Teachers were worried there were materials in the building making people seriously ill. Again, I assured my wife she had nothing to worry about. Certainly, the School Department and the school’s principal had all of the health information that was available, and if there was anything to be concerned about someone would be doing something about it.

Again, I believe I was wrong. Then one day my wife got a call from her doctor. We went to see the doctor together and he told us she had cancer.

In fairness, we don’t know if she got cancer from PCB’s in school. And that’s kind of important if we hope to draw a conclusion from this story. But he brings up a good point about the district not accepting direction from the EPA:

Just recently, in a statement released by the teacher’s union, the EAW announced that talks between the union and the School Committee have “broken down” because the School Committee, led by the mayor and superintendent, is refusing to “accept any direction or guidance from the Environmental Protection Agency.” Why? The answer is simple. Mayor Petty and Superintendent Binienda already know what the EPA may tell them: the building is dangerous to students and staff, and they should fix it or close the school. That right there is all anyone needs to know.

Translation – Mayor Petty would rather give a speech about welcoming undocumented immigrants to a roaring crowd of “friggin morons” than he would to protect teachers from getting cancer at Doherty and Burncoat High School.

So here’s the reason we didn’t write about this yet, and it’s the question that runs through my mind every time this is brought up. If it’s really that dangerous in these schools because of PCB’s, then why are people going to to these schools? Gonna be perfectly honest, just like Ray, I thought it was all a little theatrical and hyperbolic. Because if I knew that there were things in my workplace that would slowly kill me every time I clocked in, I’d stop going to work. Or at least I’d make a bigger stink about it. And that’s the part that didn’t make sense – why aren’t teachers making a bigger stink about this since it’s such a big deal?

This is what I mean when I say that the alleged power of teacher’s unions is vastly overrated. Teacher’s unions are pushovers. They take crap lying down because their leaders are useless social justice warriors. They throw their money at whoever has a D in front of their name and then don’t demand anything from them in return, which seems to defeat the purpose of lobbying.

This is what the Educator’s Association of Worcester (EAW) has been doing instead of fighting for their teachers, who allegedly have their lives on the line every day by stepping into this toxic buildings:

Showing up to a rally to make Worcester a sanctuary city is higher on the list of priorities for the corrupt EAW leaders than protecting their paying members from getting cancer. This is why teachers get paid less than other public sector workers like cops – because their union blows. They don’t look out for their own self interests. It’s just a bunch of politically motivated SJW’s.

Check out what they held at the EAW in January, while the PCB issue was being ignored:

Here’s some pictures of who went – failed State Rep candidate, and professional SJW Margot Barnet:

State Rep Mary Keefe, and Senator Eldridge, both of whom just voted to give themselves 40% pay raises, but seem uninterested in teachers getting cancer.

Failed School Committee candidate John Trobaugh, disgraced ACLU director Ron Madnick, and current School Committee candidate Dante Camparetto, who has encouraged kids to skip school to protest Trump’s inauguration and yesterday at the City Council meeting admitted that “not all that long ago I was on the brink of homelessness, I was an alcoholic.”

And a bunch of granola eating, WHITE professional victims, who pretend to care about the plight of minorities, but won’t live or associate with people who look differently than they do:

Good God. That sweater. It just screams, “I don’t watch football on Sunday.”

Guess what NONE of these people do for work? That’s right, NONE of them are teachers. Yet they’re organizing a political event that’s hosted by the EAW’s corrupt SJW President, Roger Nugent, at the teacher’s union headquarters.

So here’s my question for Worcester Public School teachers – are you gonna do anything about this? Because we’ve had your back since day one at Turtleboy Sports. But your union seems a lot more concerned about protesting the results of an election than they do about your health. One of the following 2 scenarios is true:

  • Teachers and Ray Mariano are being overly dramatic
  • Ray Mariano is right, and the Mayor, superintendent, and school committee are cutting corners, endangering the lives of teachers and students, while the teacher’s union sits on their thumbs and plays social justice warrior world domination.

P.S. Ray Mariano needs to quit it with the vague teasers and just announce if he’s gonna run for Mayor. Which he should. Because we could use leadership like him right about now. When he was the Mayor Worcester was a normal city. Let’s Make Worcester Normal Again!!

How about the city sending 50 Worcester custodians to “clean” the building over Christmas vacation? Funny how the building was being tested for air quality a week or so later. Ask the BHS teachers and the custodians!

There are teachers at these schools, who were once students at these schools. They are having babies who will grow up to attend them also. Yet you want to make this about the union. This is why I’ve stopped coming here all the time. Your cunt friend Bineida has a fist up the ass of her students and faculty and you brush this off like it’s nothing. Ceiling tiles fall at Prouty, FIRE the superintendent.WPS knowingly sending people into a cancerous environment and not informing them, “Its the Unions fault” …

Fuck you slimeball . And Bret Killoran is a fucking criminal. A street slug. A loser. He’s been charged with ARMED FUCKING ROBBERY…….he also smokes Mids…brown, sun dried, Mexican piss fertilized mid grade marijuana…

You sound so sincere, but when ex- mayor Ray finally speaks up you report it and then blame the Union! Go back to trolling the courthouse records.

Turtleboy hits a new low. Seems to be following in the footsteps of Trump. Random vitrolic musings while having no ability to fully back up their statements.
Then the fanbase comes in high fiving each other after their 9th circle jerk of the day.
The best part though is when the next squirrel comes along, pulling all the persistent followers ot the next height. Then the squirrel magnificently changes into a butterfly. And all of the Turtleboys and Turtlegirls bow to their newest god.
Yeah, I come here. Usually once every week or two, to see what kind of inanity is in the forefront. I used to stop by daily, but found that the shitty taste of this place doesn’t deserve daily.
I will say there have been fine moments on this blog. Sometimes there was actual reporting. I’m sure there will be again. A shame it’s not more often than once a month or two.

Walter Crockett was there? The same Walter Crockett who routinely hands you your ass on his Facebook threads? Dude, that’s as close to a real journalist as you’ve ever stood, mirror included. You should have asked for some writing tips.

Roger nugent is corrupt? I need to make a fake fb for these comments.

  • March 8, 2017 at 5:45 pm

I am most certainly a concerned WPS teacher. I want nothing but the best for both our students and faculty. I can honestly state, however, that Roger Nugent is an honest , proactive, genuine educator. He does not have a corrupt bone in his body.

The last word I would use to describe Roger Nugent is corrupt. I worked with him at both Burncoat Prep and Gates Lane and I know he cares about the teachers and students of Worcester and is doing all he can to ensure the safety of everyone at Doherty and Burncoat. You have sat back and not addressed the issue but Roger has. He brought it back to the forefront way before Ray did. Since when has the EAW had this miraculous amount of power that it can solve an issue that has been ignored and minimalized for years? I resent your implications about his integrity and suggest you do your research or at least talk to him to get real not “alternative” facts on this matter. The EAW is lucky to have someone in the helm who is not looking for that downtown job when his service is up. You have it so wrong this time.

Well if they are concerned about PCB’s and exposure they should do a blood test. PCB’s get locked up in the fatty tissues of your body and accumulate over time…kind of like dust bunnies under the stove…little dust bunnies that can cause neurological disorders, infertility, muscle fatigue and pain, cancer and death…It can actually be very dangerous for fat people with long term exposure to lose a lot of weight fast because the PCB’s in their fat cells are all released into their body over a short period of time. PCB’s are passed to infants via breast milk so if you are nursing and think you are being exposed you could be poisoning your child.
There are test that can check your blood for exposure and you could even do PCB surface wipe testing if you think they are environmentally available in the school.

The teachers union is in bed with the city, like the state unions. The city knows the issues, guaranteed. But hides it, like the state does in many instances. Nothing new here, but a bunch of poseurs who have their own agendas.

These people are not your friends, they are not your advocates. They are your neighbors, former classmates, people who shop and do other things just like you. What is different is they just recognized that politics was a way to make money, gain power, make THEIR lives better while telling everyone else what to do. It’s great for the ego. Fuck them, defy them. They are not gods. They are not much better than the thieves, welfare queens and general fuck-ups written about here.
