So a lot of people have been talking about another high school basketball game in which student chants were deemed offensive:

SourceCatholic Memorial School told WBZ NewsRadio 1030 its students will not be allowed to attend Monday night’s MIAA semifinal basketball game against Cambridge Rindge and Latin at TD Garden after they chanted “You killed Jesus” in response to taunts from Newton North fans before a playoff game Friday night. In a statement released Monday morning, the school said members of the student body were told they cannot attend the game, and that, following meetings over the weekend, the school administration has begun to take steps “both immediate and long-term” to better educate students about intolerance. “There are no excuses for the actions of the student-spectators who took part in the chanting, their behavior was appalling; their actions and words do not align with the teachings or the value system of our school or the Catholic Church,” read the school’s statement. The “You killed Jesus” chants followed taunts from Newton North students, who shouted chants of “Where are your girls?” and others that implied things about the male anatomy. Catholic Memorial, located in West Roxbury, is an all-boys Catholic school. Newton North High School has a large Jewish population.

Alright, first of all, what this article conveniently leaves out is that the Newton North fans were chanting “sausage fest,” before the CM fans started chanting “you killed Jesus.” We’ll address the Jesus chant in a minute, but why is it OK to chant “sausage fest” and think there won’t be retaliation? Because to me it sounds like “sausage fest” is insinuating that all the kids who go to Catholic Memorial are gay, because they go to an all boy’s school. Thus they are especially drawn to sausage. But that’s OK? How come CBS didn’t even MENTION that?

Secondly, obviously it is not appropriate to chant “you killed Jesus” to a school with a big Jewish population. Obviously. Was Jesus killed by Jews? I mean, not really. Sure, it was a mob of angry Jews who wanted Jesus to hang for his crimes. But at the end of the day it was the Romans who sentenced him to death. So the chant isn’t even accurate. Either way, I’m pretty sure none of the Jews from Newton had anything to do with Jesus’ politically motivated crucifixion.

Thirdly, I understand that anti-semitism is a big deal, but honestly, who cares? If I were playing for Newton North I’d just use it as motivation. Destroy Catholic Memorial. Stick it right in their uncircumcised, sausage fest of a face. Seems to me like this is just Jewish people from Newton jumping in line to be the next butthurt victims of “hate speech.” It’s like when people nowadays whine about racism and safe spaces. If they had lived through REAL racism in the Jim Crow era, they wouldn’t be whining about halloween costumes and tequila parties. And if these Newtonites complaining about this had lived in Poland circa 1941, they’d probably realize that a stupid chant at a high school basketball game isn’t that big of a deal.

This Turtleboy happens to be a catholic. You can chant, “Altar boy,” “Bernard law,” and “clergy scandal” at me until the cows come home. Because I’m not a butthurt loser that needs to be protected from words.

Look, if I were an administrator at CM I would’ve put an end to this too. You have no choice. You find out who the ringleaders are and you punish them. You treat it like a learning experience and maybe give them a detention or something. But how the hell can you punish the entire student body for a chant that they might not have been involved in? That’s just fascist right there.

My question is, how is this even enforceable? They played Cambridge in the State Semifinal at the Boston Garden. How hard would it be for a CM kid to get in the door and watch the game?

The bottom line is, if you’re gonna start chanting at another team’s fans in a deliberate attempt to humiliate them, then you have to understand that the gloves are coming off. If you chant “sausage fest” to a bunch of dudes who would probably kill to have some chicks in their school, then you have to understand that there will be retaliation. You don’t kick someone in the junk and then expect for them not to drag you into the gutter with them.

The funny thing is, I’d not known what exactly happened until someone mentioned it during a lunchtime discussion. They said it was a chant and I was thinking, “what four syllable chant would work in this situation?” Sure enough, that’s what came to mind.

But then, I was thinking that there was no way they started this out of the blue. Sure enough, they were provoked.

Never let the whole story get in the way of any opportunity to vilify one group when the real lesson should have been about mutual respect in high school sports.

At DHS in the late ’80s we used to chant “that’s alright, that’s okay, you’ll be mowing my lawn someday” when we played voke. They had a funny comeback chant about the make up of the DHS student body and everyone had a laugh. Times sure have changed.

At South, we didn’t even bother chanting because we didn’t give enough of a fuck to even go to the game.

Let’s see: Funny chant leads to third-level antisemitism (you know that I know that you know what I mean) to comparison to the Holocaust.

    That escalated quickly.

This whole thing is backwards. If the news really did kill Jesus then why would this be an insult to them? Shouldn’t they be happy about it and be chanting “We killed Jesus” as an insult to CM?

Neither the Romans nor the Jews killed jesus. You can’t kill what never existed.

When will adults actually remember that high school kids are fucking savages? They’re at the tail end of the “no adult responsibility” train and they’re going to wring every last bit out of it. You figure out who the main kids were, give them a couple of days of detention, and be done with it. Punishing the whole school for it is like punishing the entire platoon because Pyle had a jelly doughnut in his foot locker.
