With the way things are going in this city, someday this Turtleboy might have to up and leave Worcester. But where would you move to if you wanted to stay in Worcester County? To me, the biggest factor in moving to a new place is the traffic and accessibility. How am I gonna get back and forth to the Woo? How much of a pain in the ass is it to move around town? Some towns and cities in Worcester County are better than others when it comes to this. So let’s look at the Top 5 best and worst towns to travel to in Worcester County.

Best 5

5. Charlton

There’s nothing worse than a town that’s far from a major highway. Getting stuck behind some dooshnozzle going 30 mph on a double lined road because he’s got jack shit to do today is the worst. Charlton’s not like that. All you gotta do is jump on 290 until you get to glorious Route 20 West, where you will see Oxford in all it’s splendor

Screen Shot 2015-06-22 at 5.39.58 PM

And one of the best parts about driving to Charlton if you have a little free time, is you can stop at Centerfold’s for some lunch, and watch the David Prouty class of ought nine put their high school diplomas to good use!!

Screen Shot 2015-06-22 at 5.40.16 PM

Once you enter Charlton

Screen Shot 2015-06-22 at 5.40.07 PM

There’s really only one or two lights in the whole town. All you gotta do is take a left at this one

Screen Shot 2015-06-22 at 5.40.55 PM

And boom – you’re in the center of town. This is what a traffic jam looks like in Charlton:

4. Sutton

Sutton is cool because it’s actually on the way to something – Providence. I find Barre easy to get to, but why the hell would I ever wanna go to Barre? Sutton actually serves a purpose. It’s also extremely easy to get to and I don’t know if I’ve ever seen anything resembling traffic there. First of all, it’s right off 146, which is like a driver’s wet dream:

Screen Shot 2015-06-22 at 5.50.55 PM

Hot. There’s basically one light that matters in the whole town, and it’s almost always green:

Screen Shot 2015-06-22 at 5.50.47 PM

There’s a bunch of exits, including this one, which is brings you to a magical road that takes you literally anywhere in town you wanna go

Screen Shot 2015-06-22 at 5.50.38 PM

Of course if you live in a town like Sutton, there isn’t really much there for grocery stores or any other signs of civilization. Luckily, it doesn’t really matter because with roads like this

Screen Shot 2015-06-22 at 5.50.32 PM

You can slum it to the Oxford Market Basket in five minutes. And a lot of these small towns have AWFUL downtown areas that are just filled with traffic and morons. Not Sutton though. This is what downtown Sutton looks like:

Sweet.

3. Sterling

I like Sterling because it’s off of the greatest highway ever built – Interstate 190. I mean, what’s not to like about this?

11391175_1595080464108564_4379137353988092857_n

I could look at that asphalt all day. There’s two exits that take you into Sterling, including this one which drops you off right in the middle of town:

10409752_1595080477441896_7742127421391394859_n

It brings you to Route 12, which reminds me of Lake Ave, except everyone isn’t driving like an asshole.

11406883_1595080484108562_1533755791830179897_n

Then finally it drops you in the middle of town, which fits the Turtleboy standards for limited traffic:

2. Leominster

Everyone associates Fitchburg with Leominster, but I know better. Driving to Leominster is a nice easy little trip. Driving to Fitchburg makes me wanna kill farm animals. So when you see these signs, it’s important to know how different your journey can be:

Screen Shot 2015-06-22 at 6.06.24 PM

We’ll see what happens you go right a little later on. But when you go left, you’re basically in the center of Leominster two minutes later:

Screen Shot 2015-06-22 at 6.07.37 PM

There’s also a bunch of other ways to sneak yourself into and out of town. Exit 7 is an easy one, and so is this one:

Screen Shot 2015-06-22 at 6.06.51 PM Screen Shot 2015-06-22 at 6.07.01 PM

Ahh yes, Mechanic Street. Or as wannabe Leominster hardos like to refer to it as – “the hood.”

1. Boylston

I freaking love driving to Boylston. Driving to Boylston is a borderline orgasmic driving experience. It takes five minutes to get there on 290, and you get off at Exit 23 – AKA the Dragon 88 exit:

11425399_1595080427441901_5832807529312072755_n 11401219_1595080284108582_3820414211418810858_n 10426165_1595080300775247_7800911472171069383_n

Every road in Boylston is wide, which allows driver to comfortably weave back and forth so as to enjoy the driving experience.

11535897_1595080314108579_545992214460940139_n

This is what a traffic jam looks like in Boylston:

10489703_1595080344108576_6611331717904869667_n

This is what traffic on Main Street looks like:

11406999_1595080320775245_8009994421658905757_n

And this is downtown at rush hour:

11391205_1595080267441917_4116030318101798334_n

Uhhhhh. Boylston. So hot right now.

Honorable mentions: Northbridge, Shrewsbury, West Boylston, anything on 122 west of Worcester (Paxton, Rutland, Oakham, Barre), Westminster, Gardner, Millbury.

Worst

5. West Brookfield

People who live in West Brookfield swear by it. I’m sure it’s a lovely place to live. And don’t get me wrong, the downtown is lovely, which is why it’s ranked fifth.

10346590_1599744713642139_5891309654628491716_n

The problem is getting there. There’s only one way to get to the Brookfield’s and it sucks – Route 9 west. Absolutely terrible. And of course there’s only one way back as well. First you gotta go through Brookfield

20817_1599744706975473_7565313028072362317_n

then East Brookfield

11537717_1599744696975474_7847639082959205122_n

And it’s not like you’re going through the outskirts of the towns. You’re going through the center of every single one. And once you hit downtown East Brookfield, shit gets bumping. You will inevitably find yourself behind a truck who will drive below the speed limit, because, fuck it, time doesn’t matter.

11204910_1599744553642155_2207629353730200928_n 10641226_1599744560308821_2002300785081916448_n 11200810_1599744556975488_6810461085529011040_n 1972439_1599744570308820_7408806251927572433_n

Then you will enter the magical town of Spencer. You will probably lose your East Brookfield companion at this time and find a new, larger and slower truck to make your time in Spencer last much, much longer than it needs to.

10357584_1599744563642154_2198929184149309080_n 17718_1599744436975500_2967873986145352145_n 11064649_1599744440308833_780714002759214923_n 10990046_1599744503642160_5964016279521473038_n 11095662_1599744453642165_2837189862203375867_n

You will pass Whitco, where many a Turtleboy detractor has agreed to meet up with Turtleboy in order to exchange fisticuffs. No police.

11219069_1599744443642166_162597573008074023_n

Finally, your truck will take you home all the way through beautiful Leicester.

11063800_1599744446975499_220256998113523905_n

4. Westboro

All of the Boro’s around here are easy to get to except for this one. Driving to Westboro blows. On a map it’s pretty close, but then you realize that there’s only one way to get there – Route 9 east. The ugly-step sister of Route 9 west. First you have to navigate yourself along the clusterfuck that is the Lake Quisig bridge, just to get into Shrewsbury:

11218888_1599760606973883_8295428670875037473_n

Then in Shrewsbury you will be greeted by light, after light, after light, which will almost always be red despite the fact that you are driving on the far busier road at each intersection:

11012157_1599760613640549_8151615762605546209_n 11217955_1599760600307217_3734520943012072571_n

And even when you finally get into Westboro, your work is far from done. You have to follow 135 behind some guy in a 1950’s throwback, while you mosey your ass into the crowded downtown area:

10352944_1599760336973910_6750212733807314844_n 1743640_1599760310307246_2174567047434189286_n 11035448_1599760303640580_3832525121775543214_n 10501784_1599760323640578_4350963892947051503_n

3. Holden

Seriously, fuck Holden. It’s so close, but yet so far away. To me the big appeal of moving to the burbs is to get AWAY from traffic. But not in Holden. They invented traffic in Holden. If you live near Tatnuck or Salisbury Street it’s not that bad, because you can kind of sneak in the back door. But everyone else has to take the highway, and that can really, really suck. Let’s say you have to drop your kid off at Wachusett Regional High School. This requires going all the way through Holden, and then all the way back. First you’d have to get by the light at the school.

11425506_1595080907441853_2078474200291644630_n

Then you’d come across one of the worst lights in Massachusetts in the center of town:

17185_1595080944108516_7301378830388197692_n

After four or five times of that God forsaken light turning red and green, you will find yourself at the light itself, and notice there is a graveyard right next to it. Presumably where all the people are buried who died while waiting for that light to turn green.

11393169_1595080874108523_5306074753914270343_n

After that you’ll sit in some more traffic

11390274_1595080704108540_8595202796008798890_n

come to the Salisbury Street light:

1907544_1595080714108539_4044522467329062729_n

come to some random light where you have to move to the left in order to go straight, and move to the right in order to go left, which is also straight. Because that makes TONS of sense.

11406790_1595080677441876_5135656742761267167_n

Then you’ll come to Mount View School, which apparently is ALWAYS under construction, and you’ll get stuck there as well.

11257745_1595080650775212_8578990634133154750_n

20 minutes later you’ll come to one more light that will finally deliver you to the promised land of 190…….a couple of miles away.

11148692_1595080710775206_3652825802551895739_n

2. Lunenburg

Never go to Lunenburg. Best advice we could ever give you. It really, really sucks. But if you do go, the only reason I can think of is to get the Chinese food. Because there is a magical Chinese restaurant in Lunenburg that doesn’t make you feel like you just ate Chinese food. It’s like Nancy Chang’s on steroids. To get there you have to take 190 to Route 2 West. Then you get off at the first exit.

11018722_1599770643639546_5068696069811372579_n

Sounds easy right? Wrong. This is where the fun begins. First you come to a stop sign. Good luck if you’re going left. But if you’re going right, it doesn’t look so bad at first.

11536143_1599770650306212_4244897837547030305_n

Then reality sinks in.

10438315_1599770663639544_1792024797601280711_n 11261937_1599770693639541_5368581192329924865_n

Lunenburg is a never-ending depressing line of traffic. The only thing that stops you from killing yourself are the pleasant childhood memories of Whalom Park that this underpass brings back.

1606980_1599797560303521_6669450647931581210_n

Other than that it’s just five miles of traffic to the center of town.

Screen Shot 2015-06-23 at 1.20.14 AM

1. Fitchburg

Like I said before, the drive to Fitchburg is a completely different experience than the drive to Leominster. Back when I was on the turtle prowl I could date a turtlebabe who lived in Leominster. But Fitchburg? That’s where I drew the line. I don’t do Fitchburg. The drive alone can kill a relationship. I don’t know who constructed Route 2, which is so far away from the center of the Burg, or why 190 magically ends in Lancaster, but they basically designed it so that the Fitchburg experience is as miserable as it gets. Newsflash – Fitchburg is terrible enough to begin with. The drive only exacerbates that.

Most people when they go the Burg are going to somewhere on the John Fitch Highway. But just to get to there is an adventure. You have to drive through all this single lane crap in Leominster before even entering the Kingdom of the Burg.

11054828_1599765303640080_4691440318238975182_n 10502103_1599765253640085_2572655201560726137_n 20087_1599765530306724_447223266127997073_n

Then alas you will come to Bemis Rd, which will be a clusterfuck if you dare try to come back to Worcester this way. It can also bring you to Fitchburg International Airport, which is a great place to catch a quick flight to Sterling International Airport.

11054402_1599765350306742_6494275836759647675_n

Then you’ll finally come to the John Fitch Highway, which is in some classic Fitchburg shape right now.

11236430_1599766820306595_1353397069607777672_n 11536132_1599766756973268_4497477688994269141_n 11535933_1599766760306601_4941477177270575704_n

Now if you wanna go downtown, that’s even more fun. You better pack a lunch, because you’ll be waiting there all day.

11540892_1599766763639934_211399754180570891_n 10402467_1599766753639935_1864992920373250085_n

And no matter where you go in Fitchburg you have to cross a river at some point. Because apparently Fitchburg is the nexus of the universe.

11037552_1599766776973266_3919655928497608376_n

Some people say that you should take South Street to get back to Route 2, but it’s really no better.

11377365_1599766880306589_5203965267309718078_n

The only good part about Fitchburg is when you leave city limits.

Honorable mention for having terrible traffic downtown: Oxford, Webster, Auburn, Milford, Douglas, Dudley, Northborough, Sturbridge.

Honorable mention for being impossible to get to: Mendon, Blackstone, Warren, Hardwick, Wales, Winchendon.

What did we miss?

Great nod to my home town Sterling… easy to get to Worcester or Leominster, while still being small and quiet
And if you’re looking for great Chinese food, I strongly recommend Gold Bowl in Leominster, on Rt. 12 just a few minutes over the line from Sterling… AMAZING food, no MSG, and they deliver to Sterling 🙂

Ive lived in west brookfield my whole life and still do today. Its an ok place to live in, but theres not much to do for leisure. I will disagree in the fact that it is impossible to travel there because all of the brookfields dont have much traffic, so it should take less time.

I take that exact ride into Lunenburg every day to get home from work. It’s the worst.

Haha I’ll second the above comment– “fun read, but not very accurate.”

Fuck you. You missed New Braintree you ass hat. Nobody here worth a shit but we sure as hell don’t want any city shit bags coming either. Don’t bother trying to find us. We’re not here and we’re not friendly either.

Lunenburg blows. Wasn’t that the town with the white mom who spray painted racial shit on her house where she lived with her bi-racial son? And then she blamed it on the football team? The reason there is no traffic once you get through Lunenburg is because no one wants to go there.

  • Stephanie
    June 26, 2015 at 10:51 am

Lunenburg isn’t even directly off of that exit, everything bad they said about Lunenburg is actually all in Leominster.

  • Dmchristie
    June 26, 2015 at 7:28 am

Fun read, but you totally missed the mark on the Lunenburg/Leominster assessment…all of that traffic you are talking about…well that is actually in “Leominster” traffic, not “Lunenburg”. As you can see from the previous comments, it’s not how the locals get to town. So Leominster is the traffic nightmare, yes even going up into Main Street (2 minutes my a**). Lunenburg has about the same traffic issues as Boylston. Nice job on the rest of it though, good research, lol. 🙂 Again, a fun read, but not very accurate.

Next time you want to go to Lunenburg, as in Lunenburg center, take exit 8B off 190 for 2 east, and take the first exit and cut through the Target shopping plaza. But if you’re going for the chinese across from Wal-Mart, then RT 13 takes you straight there. Just saying there are easier ways to get to Lunenburg. Also, that exit, 32, is In Leominster, and all of that traffic you mention is all in Leominster and clears up by the time you are in Lunenburg.

  • Lunenburg Res
    June 23, 2015 at 11:08 pm

Why the hell would you take exit 32 / Route 13 to go to Lunenburg?! Hit the Lancaster rotary and fly down Lancaster Ave, or the Target exit and do the same. Lived I this small town for over a decade and have never taken that exit. Would never recommend moving here but it has nothing to do with getting here.

Westboro definitely earned it’s spot. Sure, there are some beautiful scenic backroads you can take to get there, but for the most part it’s hell. Nobody understands the rotary. And traffic backs up as far as the eye can see, from like 3 pm to 7 pm on weekdays. I live 7 miles from my work in the center of westboro. Sometimes it takes me 45 minutes to get there, and that’s on backroads.

    June 23, 2015 at 12:42 pm

Clinton needs to be on this list. Accessible from 495, 190, 290, Rt. 2. 4 Traffic lights. Bars, restaurants, including some of the best pizza joints in the state (Mr. Z’s, P&S, Jon’s), self contained schools (non of this “regional” crap, late night dining. Clinton is it’s own metropolitan area because the rubes from Sterling, Lancaster, Bolton, and Berlin have nothing ins their respective towns. Boylston and West Boylston suck because the cops there think they are living in Compton.

West Boylston was cool back in the day because you could get your parents to stop at McDonalds on the way to The Fair. Stuff at The Fair was so cheap that getting a toy was all but guaranteed.

West Boylston should rank higher. The second you turn left off exit 4 (Rte 190) through the center of town you’ve got over a dozen places to eat, including two ice cream places – three including Pinecroft, 3 gas stations (one is technically in Worcester), a shopping plaza, a school, Wal Mart, CVS, and easy access to the rest of the town.

  • matt

Westboro is not that bad to get to. There are several back way in that make it easier. Go through Grafton Rt 30 by Tufts brings right into center. Couple of ways from Shrewsbury/ Northboro line. Lived there 7 years and had to travel to Worcester to work. Found whatever way I could not to go Rt 9

Sutton may be easy to get to, but with Joyce and Old Balls directing their terror campaign from there – it’s just a simmering hotbed of racism. And who wants to raise a family near a rampaging geriatric and his “trophy” wife?

Grew up in Sutton, still live there, don’t talk shit about something you know nothing about, it’s not funny you just sound like an ass. It’s small, friendly, and a great place to grow up; however, while I appreciate the traffic nod it’s not all true. Sutton can absolutely suck to drive in, because once you get off 146 there’s a 50/50 chance you’re going 25 mph.

Best part of Barre/Hardwick/Brookfields is none of the city slugs like to go there. Keeps it nice and quiet.
