A lot of people have been buzzing about Donald Trump’s tax returns, and the New York Times “bombshell” that Trump lost a billion dollars in 1995 and probably hasn’t been paying any federal income taxes.

Bombshell? You’re killing a great word. Stop. It’s not a bombshell if he didn’t do anything illegal. A bombshell is when 32,000 emails get deleted from a private server. This is just a rich guy hiring a team of accountants to save him money without breaking the law. Cool bombshell.

I have no idea how any of this works. I don’t understand taxes. That’s why I just hire someone else to do it for me. Because our tax system is complicated and stupid. I give an accountant money so they can go out and find a way for me to give less money to the government.  This makes me a job creator. I win, the accountant wins, and Washington loses. Tax companies advertise themselves by bragging about how much of a refund they can get us. Where are all the butthurts whining about how they shouldn’t be doing this?

This is no different than what Donald Trump does. He just has a lot more money and has to invest more money in accountants in order to do so. The bottom line is the money either goes in your pocket, or it goes to the government. Who do you trust more? Because I trust myself a lot more. You won’t see me voluntarily writing checks to Mosaic Cultural Complex or some other shady non-profit. You won’t see my giving Ed Augustus a raise for being bad at his job. You won’t see me declaring war in some bullshit pile of rocks. But the government can and will do all of those things with my money. It’s why I like holding onto it at all costs.

That’s why all these people whining about Trump’s taxes sound so, so dumb. What are you mad about? What law did he break? Oh that’s right, you’re just butthurt that you paid taxes like a sucker and he figured out a way to legally avoid them. Why are you mad at him when you should be mad at the system? Don’t hate the player, hate the game. The Clintons have been running this country for decades now. If the tax codes are set up so that Trump doesn’t have to pay any taxes, then why hasn’t this been fixed? Plus, do you think Hillary Clinton or any politician is lining up to write a check to Washington DC because they’re feeling extra jingo? She’s hiring the same accountants, and they’re hiding money in the same places. But the media doesn’t seem to care. Makes sense.

Secretary of State John Kerry docks his 76 foot yacht in Rhode Island because it saves him half a million dollars per year. People go to New Hampshire all the time to avoid paying a sales tax. And I’m not mad at any of these people. Why? Because tax laws affect behavior. And smart people will do what it takes to avoid paying taxes. But no one seems mad at John Kerry. Funny how that works.

What do people want Trump to do? Hand over billions of dollars to the government that he doesn’t have to? How stupid do you have to be to subscribe to that philosophy? We want a President who just hands over shit he doesn’t have to? This is a quality we’re looking for? Someone who is a spendthrift and wasteful? Look, if you wanna say that he shouldn’t be President because he lost a billion dollars in one year, that’s a valid point. But no one seems to care about that. They only care that he probably didn’t pay income taxes. And that’s just dumb.

trump4

I will say this though – Trump has a lot of nerve talking about building walls and killing terrorists and all this other expensive shit, while not paying taxes. THAT is what is hypocritical, and it’s a point that people aren’t making nearly enough. This whole wall thing is a ridiculously expensive waste of money. Most people who are here illegally didn’t walk over the border. They came here on a plane and overstayed their visas. A wall is a multi billion dollar project that can be circumvented with a ladder or a shovel. It’s the definition of big government and wasteful spending – something conservatives claim to be against.

The bottom line is that smart people are always looking for a way to save a buck. When you have a kid, do you pretend that you don’t have a kid so you can pay more in taxes? When it’s 10 cent wing night do you insist on paying full price? Of course not. Because you take the best deal that you can get without breaking the rules.

The only people who are mad that he goes for max deductions are people who DO NOT PAY TAXES!!! Every person who reads TB that owns a business or pays taxes knows that you try to pay the least amount possible..EVERY tax payer does this why should he be different

Gee I hope I can pay 10% extra this year for more funding for asinine things like the Mosaic center for ripping of tax payers..Yup lots of hard working people think that

I’ve got no issue with with him exploiting loopholes in the tax code to his advantage. As you said, thats why many accountants even have jobs. My issue is with all his speeches that denigrated people who paid no income taxes. If you’re going publicly call people out for something, it would be nice if you weren’t secretly one of those people.

Change the tax code. All he did was to use the existing laws to his advantage. That’s how the system works.

I seem to remember GE didn’t pay any taxes either, a multi-billion dollar corporation . . . . stop whining or go fix the tax code (drop mic)

You remember incorrectly. GE incurred $18 billion in income taxes in 2015, the latest year for which they have a public annual filing with the SEC.

There are very few ways to pay no taxes at all, unless you live in the woods and don’t interact with society. There are taxes on everything everywhere at federal, state, county and city levels.
My favorite example is Joe Pesci in the movie With Honors where he plays a homeless guy. He gets arrested, goes to court and says he is a tax paying citizen. The doubtful judge challenges that he pays taxes and he replies that there is a State and County tax on beer and wine. Everyone pays taxes, even if they deduct everything off their income tax, thats only one tax.

The irony is that Trump’s tax plan proposes a whole lot of reform.
Hilary? Not so much; just higher taxes that incentivize people to avoid them with clever lawyers and accountants (and the Clintons can afford them-You? Pay up sucker. Hilary’s limo isn’t going to fill itself with gas.)

Disagree, TB. The issue I have is taking business losses and claiming them on your personal income tax. So his airline failed and his casinos tanked- Trump is still living in a penthouse on 5th Ave, which means he received money from those businesses in salary or other compensation.
Did the Clintons lose 700k is one year in capital? I dont know, but seems more believable than claiming over 900 million in business losses on a personal income tax form.

So you can’t take a personal loss when your business loses money, but in the other 30 years where your business earns money, your business profits get taxed and your personal salary gets taxed, checks out.

If he took them on his personal return then they are either either partnerships or S-Corps. For those the income isn’t taxed at the entity level but pass through to the owners. All income and losses are treated this way. Where exactly did you want him to reflect his losses?

The cackling hag did the same thing: deducted $700K loss from her taxes and the NY Times paid no taxes last year even though they made a profit. One of the biggest tax cheats, GE, pays nearly zero taxes because they have more tax accountants than most small cities. While this may piss us off it is not illegal.

The tax code needs to be reformed. No tax deductions for anyone. If you make $6,000 a year you pay 15%, fuck you, probably getting EBT, WIC and other services. Pay up. If you make $150K, pay 15%. Nice job asshat. No deduction for the McMansion. No deductions for anything, not even your spawn. If you make $1.2 Billion because you are a cock sucking queer stock trader, 15%. I hope you die, painfully and slowly. GE, GM and all Corporations, bit more complicated. Taxing them is taxing us as we buy their products but they also sell overseas. Above my pay grade, maybe 10% with no investment tax credit, nor deductions.

A simple flat tax is the fairest of all. No deductions of any kind for anyone. No minimum income level, no maximum, everyone pays, taken right out of your pay direct to the Treasury. IRS to the unemployment line.

The Brown Klown has added 9 Trillion dollars to our debt, more than all previous Presidents combined! He mismanaged that in eight years. What will the cackling Marxist do if she steals the election and declares war with Russia? We don’t need anymore neocons.

Dr. Ben Carson had the right idea: “You earn ten cents your tithe is a penny.”

Realistically a 20% flat tax would be sufficient: credits for minor children (under 18) for families (married couples must file joint return); 20% for corporations, LLC’s, etc. with no credits or deductions. 15% would get rid of the Ponzi scheme called Social Security from the elderly who have worked since they were 16 who will would loose their checks.

Get rid of the itemized FICA payroll deduction (SS and Medicare) and reform SS to a credit-based system. Only the elderly and disabled who are not working would receive checks. Transition Medicare to a voucher-based system where every senior 65+ gets a yearly allowance of $25,000 they would use to pay for appointments, prescriptions, etc.

Anyone who owns a business can write-off business expenses according to the current tax code. Losing a billion dollars in the casino business (which is very risky anyway) and bouncing back shows that Trump knows what’s going on.

The GE claim is a ruse. Last year they made $52 billion in pre-tax income, and incurrec $18 billion in income taxes, netting them $34 billion. Right out of their annual report filed with the SEC. Public information.

I agree with everything in this article except the part about the wall. The people who fly in on planes aren’t the ones I care about stopping, as they’ve been cleared to enter and probably are here to work. The ones who have to cross the border are often criminals. They bring drugs in while they cross because the people smuggling routes are ran by the drug cartels, and the wall would stop vans full of heroin and cocaine from driving in.

do you think the wall is going to go right over the boarder crossing and there will be no road between the two countries? People who buy into this wall shit are so stupid. Why do you think he doesn’t talk about the wall anymore? Because he hooked all the morons with that in the beginning, and anyone with a speck of intelligence doesn’t want to hear about anymore.

He still talks about the wall. Just not as much because you really can’t repeat “build the wall” over and over… there’s bigger problems than a wall, like preventing the biggest twatwaffle in the universe from becoming president.

        It’s also “border.”

And when you think about it regarding the first debate a week ago yesterday – Hillary was dumbfounded every time Trump got into details on things referring to money management and domestic and foreign trade deals. She had no clue what he was talking about you could see it and that right there is scary.

Then she brings up a Miss Universe Pageant thing from what was it, 20 years ago? That’s all you got? Really? If I was Trump I would’ve have slammed her with her husband’s failure to keep it in the sneaker with young interns even in the fucking Oval Office of the Presidency. Are you kidding me?

Her foreign policy sucks and a colossal failure. She has had 30 some-odd years in public service and what can she show for it in terms of accomplishments? Nada Zip.

Next debate in 5 days you will see Trump pulling a Clint Eastwood and outgun stupidity and incompetence. Lighter note: I still think she dresses like Dr. Evil from Austin Powers…

In reference to the ‘billion dollar loss thing’, I don’t claim to know much about business, but I do know that in many businesses, there are ways of writing things off as a loss, which isn’t really a loss. Selling something from one company you own to another at a loss, restructuring debt, shuffling around stocks, etc. It’s entirely possible that he did this as a way to then use that to lessen his tax burden, and if he did, then so what? Don’t like that practice? Get the politicians to change it.
And talking about morality when it comes to taxes is a very odd thing – then again, anything the government does tends to be pretty low on the ‘morality’ scale.
