We’ve avoided this topic because for some reason it’s considered a political issue, and we try to avoid politics that don’t involve small town bullshit. But this has gone too far and we needed to speak out on the idiocy of it all:

Screen Shot 2015-07-25 at 9.50.01 AM

The minimum wage going to $15 is the dumbest shit I’ve ever heard. We like to avoid this issue because it turns into an economics debate, and internet experts from both sides of the aisle come out and post their links that no one will ever read in the comments section.

But there’s no need to even talk about the economics of it all, because it’s just fucking common sense that if you’re working at a minimum wage job, you don’t deserve $15 an hour. Know why? Because minimum wage jobs are supposed to be the beginning, not the end. If you’re dumb enough to look at Dunkin Donuts as a career, then you deserve the scraps you’re paid.

meme-minimum

Look, minimum wage jobs are for greasy high school kids. That’s a fact. I understand that it’s not that simple, and some people find themselves in situations where a minimum wage job is their only option. But people keep talking about a “living wage.” Newsflash – you’re not supposed to live off of a minimum wage. You’re supposed to struggle. You’re supposed to hate it so much that it motivates you to figure out a way to make a real living wage so that you can come back and tell your $30K a year manager what a loser he is.

And a lot of people are talking about “working up the ladder” too. You got it all wrong. There is no ladder at Dunkin Donuts. It’s a temporary job where you’re paid to not give a fuck while you scheme about how you’re going to make real money. Because the whole point of living in America is create your own ladder, not climb someone else’s.

Let’s look at some dumb things people are saying on Facebook:

Screen Shot 2015-07-25 at 10.03.20 AM

Hey Nancy, I know what it’s like to make $20,000 a year. It sucked big ones. What you’re supposed to do in that situation is tell yourself, “no fucking way I’m doing this the rest of my life.” Then you figure out how to make real money. Because at the end of the day, this is America. And if you can’t figure out how to make money in America, then you’re a fucking moron. Because there’s tons of cash being tossed around in America.

Screen Shot 2015-07-25 at 10.16.40 AM

See this is a myth that the right likes to keep going. Work your ass off and you’ll be rich. As if being the Dunkin Donuts employee of the month is gonna get you somewhere in life. This country is filled with people who got straight A’s in college and can’t make money afterwards. Because you’ve all bought into this hard work bullshit. The richest companies in America weren’t founded by the hardest workers. They’re created by crafty people with a brilliant idea.

Screen Shot 2015-07-25 at 10.14.35 AM

You’re right, that’s a lot of fucking money Paul. Losers look at that and whine about it on Facebook. Winners look at that and say, “I gotta figure out how to do that.”

Screen Shot 2015-07-25 at 10.06.57 AM

Oh I see. Employees are just trying to share profits that don’t belong to them. Well why didn’t you say so? Because apparently if you work at a business you are now a part owner. So when I make Turtleboy Jr. do some chores in a couple years, I guess that means his name goes on the deed to our land.

Screen Shot 2015-07-25 at 10.08.40 AM

Oh good, someone has arbitrarily decided what people are allowed to make. What can possibly go wrong?

minimum-wage

Screen Shot 2015-07-25 at 10.22.14 AM

See that right there? This comment represents everything wrong with the whiner crowd. A franchise owner makes $150K a year??? Holy shit, where does he or she put it all?? Anyone who looks at a salary of of $150K and thinks that’s some insane, unattainable number is someone I don’t want in America. Don’t get me wrong, you can make a real nice living with that kind of cash. But anyone who looks at $150K as some sort of unattainable goal deserves to be making $9 an hour.

The bottom line is everyone in America should have to watch Shark Tank. It’s the only reality TV show that has ever been worth watching. You think any of those sharks really worked THAT hard? Nope. They were just smarter than everyone else.

But it’s the people that come on the show that are really worth watching. Because the people that are on that show all have one thing in common – they all rejected the bullshit, “hard work will help you climb the ladder” propaganda we’ve had forced down our throats. They all decided they’d rather control their own destiny than leave it in the hands of someone else to decide their salary. That’s what winners do. They go out there and take it instead of demanding that someone else give it to them.

Boom. You’re rich now.

I can’t believe a single one of you has brought up the stagnancy of the american dollar over the past 50-60 years. While interest rates have continuously risen, not a one of you has brought up the economical impact of this nation. You all should be ashamed of yourselves for thinking about your own situation without thinking about the rest of humanity.

For any of you that are religious, for shame.

An actual fact will easily show the left what will happen by articifcially increasing wages

Minimum wage went to $9 this year and McDonalds simply closed on of its stores in Route 9 and left only one down the road on Shrewsbury St. open. It cut that trade area’s workforce in 1/2 and still sells to the same exact population. McDonalds reduced its costs when the government tried to shift more onto it. The 25 people that worked at the Route 9 McDonalds? They didn’t make out so well.

So much for blaming McDonalds for being subsidized because some of its employees got welfare. Now all of them are and they aren’t paying any payroll, unemployment or meals taxes. Well done. Get ready for another wave next year when it goes to $10 per hour.

TB is spot on. If you want more than just a minimum wage job then hold yourself accountable for your own success.

U r out of your league here turtle hero. Economics ain’t ur ballywick. There r many good arguments against the increase but urs don’t float. To expect the idea of hitting it big as the way out is almost as bad as planning to live on the dole. My country was built on hard work, move up the ladder shit. Give it a rethink brother. Other than that…… I’m down with the revolution. Keep doing that thing that you do so well.

Good point on Shark Tank, but even more important is that there is one other hing that all of the people who come onto the show to pitch have in common. They all develop their product or service spending countless, thankless hours developing their product or service. With no paying them anything.

Where is their $15 per hour ?

But, the second that they sell this and hire people, they MUST BE PUNISHED by the Fight for 15 crowd for starving all of those years and working for free.

Of course, all of the new employees risked nothing and worked not one second past the clock out time Assuming they clocked in, because now you can get paid “sick time” for going to the beach. If your boss ask for a Dr’s note if he sees beach sand in your shoes, he gets fined.

Thanks Deval! I hope that your landscapers like the beach!

My girlfriend earns minimum wage at Chipotle. But after working for one month and showing that she is not an incompetent moron she is becoming a kitchen manager making $12. In just a couple more months she will be making more that $15 an hour just by coming in and doing her job well. I really don’t see how the current minimum wage is a problem at all.

I was sure I was going to disagree agree with this article completely when I saw the title, so I did approach it with a bias. But I have to say, you’ve done a fine job with this one, would have had me convinced… I totally agree people should not view minimum wage jobs as careers. I sure as hell was itching to get out of my near-minimum wage job. But, when you get past knee-jerk reactions and study the macroeconomics of this, you’d find our extremely low minimum wage actually costs most people more in taxes because of the amount of government assistance that is paid out to people making minimum. I can’t remember the exact number, but Walmart ends up costing the federal government billions of dollars on welfare that is paid to their employees. Also, we haven’t adjusted our minimum wage for inflation and cost of living for many years. So we’ve been paying people less and less every year, essentially. It just doesn’t make sense. Sorry, I know my opinion is going to differ from a lot of readers here. Let the shit storm of replies commence!

no you’re on the right track. it s/b raised-a little. But not $15/hr! But it’s nonsense to blame Walmart because their workers go on welfare. Walmart doesn’t cost the federal government anything. You’ve heard of taxes right?

To all the people who say that the Dunkin CEO makes too much and his salary should be spread to the store workers, here’s a hard fact: The workers DON’T WORK FOR THE CEO. Dunkin’ Donuts is virtually 100% percent franchised.

Franchised means that the shops in your neighborhood (DD, McDonalds, BK, Subway, etc) are owned by a local family or families, mostly immigrants or the next generation that also started with nothing BUT hard work, and here’s the kicker, VAST PERSONAL RISK that if they could not make the shop work, they lost their home and the food to feed their kids to either the bank or their own franchisor (in DD’s case that Brit you saw that makes $4800/hour) .

    Fun , huh?

Another problem, like reported in Washington state, is that the minimum wage workers were also getting subsidized by the government. This raise has put them over the threshold to receive the subsidies and are now asking for less hours so as not to lose them.
So the employer now has to hire more employees….it will make costs go up, and they will have to charge customers more.

Why is it only for fast food restaurants? All other places will stay at 8.75. Why would anyone keep working at Tedeschis for 8.75 when McDonalds pays $15. They really think that level of work merits $15/hr! Its literally almost double what they get now!

Moving up the ladder definitely is possible, but that doesn’t mean just work hard and other people will move you up. You need to set goals for what you want to do, and constantly look for opportunities and go for them, whether that means at the same business or a different one. If you don’t like your job or the pay, whether that’s minimum wage or $100k, you are free to leave whenever you like.

The other thing that drives me crazy is people who think if a CEO’s salary was reduced that the remainder would be divided to the other employees. They are completely separate.

Also, lots of people say that the CEO deserves more because of education/experience/responsibilities etc isn’t entirely accurate either. The company pays what they think will keep the employee around. If they don’t give the CEO enough pay and incentive to stay, they will leave. Same thing for the cashier, they pay what they think will keep the cashier from leaving to be a cashier somewhere else. The CEO is a lot harder to replace, so they pay them more to stay.

I am opposed to the $15/hr minimum wage, it will only raise the prices the rest of us pay. But I disagree with TB when he says that moving up the ladder doesn’t have merits. I started working for minimum wage ($4.75/hr) at age 15. I’m still at the same company now at age 35 making 100k, with a community college education, so there is something to say for longevity and hard work, even at a company most people don’t see as career worthy.

    • July 25, 2015 at 11:27 am

I agree. There are cases where people can move into “real” jobs from the absolute bottom of the ladder; those are the people who actually show up and actually work instead of bitching and moaning about not making $15 an hour. But, those people who want to move up that ladder are also the people who have the ability to do other things. If you are smart enough, and ambitious enough to work your way up to being the Store Manager of a Gargantua-Mart (which is a six-figure job, by the way), you possess the qualities to do bigger and better things.

Think of it this way. TB is right when he talks about the BS we’ve been sold about hard work. Hard work can pay off, but only when it is combined with smart work. For example, in the time one would spend climbing the Gargantua-Mart ladder, one could go get the training to be an electrician, start your own business, and start sub-contracting on construction jobs. There’s no shortage of money in this country; there’s a shortage of effort to go out and get it.

The reason why we have this problem in this country is we simply don’t teach real economics in school anymore. If we did, you wouldn’t see people at Rent-A-Center paying three times market prices because they can’t figure out that $29.99 a week for two years is a really bad way to buy a $1,000 television.

You don’t have a ton of control how much money you make. Even if you own a business, you’re still at the whims of the market. Earnings will go up and down, jobs will come and go. You can develop skills and put yourself in a higher range, but there will still be a lot of variability within that range. What you have a lot more control over is how much you spend. Working a minimum wage job? Don’t have kids. This isn’t the time. Barely scraping by? Don’t buy a new car. Just because you have a few bucks in your pocket doesn’t mean it’s time to run out and get new clothes or hit the bar. When times are good, people live like they’ll always be that way so when the inevitable bad thing happens, they’re completely blindsided and act like they had no control over it. Stop being a victim. Make good decisions. Plan ahead.
