The other day we published this blog about some ratchet trap queen of a mother who stormed into Brockton High School after receiving a text message from her bratty kid, who claimed the teacher was making fun of her. Instead of being a normal, civilized person, this lovely human being rushed into the school without permission, found her daughter’s classroom and tried to fight the teacher. Completely savage behavior. When we posted the story on Facebook we said that teachers don’t get paid enough, particularly considering how common place incidents like this are. Usually it’s not parents storming into schools like this, but there are a never ending supply of troglodytes who think rules don’t apply to them. Teachers are expected to teach them all effectively despite these type of distractions.

We figured everyone would agree with this common sense assessment, but we forgot how stupid some people can be. Enter this guy:

The average over $80,000 a year? Yes, that’s what it says when you Google “Brockton teacher salaries.” Except that’s not actually what they get paid. Ya see, any moron can Google something and see what comes up first, but smart people actually click on the links to see the real story. Ya see, this same thing happened last year in Worcester, when Spanky McFarlane incorrectly said that Worcester Public School teachers made an average of $91,500 per year. Because when you look online, you find this chart:

Worcester has the third highest paid teachers in the state? Doesn’t sound right. That’s because it’s not:

According to the Massachusetts Department of Education, the average Worcester public school teacher salary as of 2013 was $91,500, compared with the statewide average of $72,620. But according to Brian Allen, chief financial and operations officer for the school system, Worcester’s average teacher salary is actually closer to $72,000.

What gives? The state, apparently, is dividing the amount of money the city says it spends on teachers by the number of teachers on staff.

“In Worcester, the problem has been that they classified some special education teachers as special education ‘staff,’ so their pay was included in the calculation but the teacher herself/himself was not, which skews (the average salary) to the high side,” according to the state.

“If Worcester categorizes the special education teachers as teachers instead of staff, it should fix the problem.”

Gotcha. Makes sense now. Turns out teacher in Brockton don’t really average $82,000 a year either. It’s just a dumb guy on the Internet saying dumb things.

Yes, teachers generally pay a smaller percentage of their healthcare packages than workers in the private sector. They also have pensions, that they pay into, so it’s really their money. Also, municipalities do have “a choice.” This is something known as “collective bargaining.” Civilized countries allow workers to organize and agree to terms of employment with their employers. School Committees definitely have a choice when it comes to teacher salaries, and generally they meet in the middle somewhere. That’s why they call it bargaining. Stupid facts!!!

unnamed-19

Speaking of facts, here’s the findings of the Mass budget report:

In both the private sector and the public sector, workers with more education receive higher salaries. Public sector workers in Massachusetts with higher levels of education, however, earn less than private sector workers with the same level of education (at least a bachelor’s degree or higher), and earn less in overall compensation after factoring in retirement and health benefits. Claims that public sector wages are higher than private sector wages ignore the significant differences in the composition of the public and private sector workforce: overall public sector jobs require higher levels of education than private sector jobs, so even though public sector workers get paid less than private sector workers with the same levels of education, the average salary overall is higher.

Oops!!!!

So many stupid things. Don’t know where to begin. Let’s start with “teachers only work half of the year.” Only a moron thinks this. Obviously numbnuts here doesn’t have any teachers in his family or friends. I know teachers and I see how hard they work. It’s insane.

Oh yea, and it’s all unpaid. English teachers with 130 students have 130 papers to correct. Try reading 130 papers from 15 year olds while making the appropriate corrections, and verifying their works cited. If the teacher rushes through them they can probably finish reading a paper in 10 minutes. Multiple that by 130 papers, and that’s 1,300 unpaid minutes. Pretty standard. Oh yea, and when they’re done with that they can take care of their families, call parents, and fill up gigantic binders with “evidence” that they are doing their jobs, in case some fix figured dooshnozzle from the DESE does a pop-in and wants to make sure teachers are doing their job. Because a binder will prove that.

89302ed73debc1ab0ee85a7ae7a91d1a

Then there’s elementary school teachers who are up to their ears in IEP’s, lesson plans, meetings with parents, and a plethora of other unpaid activities. All those IEP’s require teachers to provide INDIVIDUALIZED lesson plans. In districts like Brockton there are more kids on IEP’s. So on top of the regular duties of lesson planning, they also have to create dozens of INDIVIDUAL lesson plans for INDIVIDUAL students. But they do it anyway because they’re addicted to helping kids learn.

8a58456fa01ea0c211ca105c8d37ac4830624cb1a1b9998314fd39023e5f98bd

Elementary teachers don’t just teach one course either – they teach ALL of the courses. Which means even more lesson planning. Yay!! Try planning sever hours of consecutive structured activities with six year olds. Wicked easy!!! Oh yea, and elementary school teachers aren’t really teachers anymore. They’re really social workers who have to have “morning meetings,” write meaningless objectives on their board, and deal with kids who are so psychologically damaged that they need to be put into “calm down rooms” so they don’t hurt other kids or their teachers.

Screen Shot 2016-01-18 at 4.54.34 PM

Oh yea, and the summers? Most teachers are preparing for the next year or working a second job. And did I mention that they are NOT paid for the summer vacation? Look at any teacher’s contract. Most pay them for 183 days. So when a teacher like Chuck Fahey at David Prouty is unjustly suspended for 30 days without the ability to appeal it, he doesn’t lose 1/12 of his salary, as the 30 days would indicate. He loses 1/6 of his salary, because teachers don’t get paid on weekends or vacations. But it doesn’t stop them from working anyway.

3EMhMVF

This means that vacations aren’t really vacations. They are forced furloughs. If I were a teacher and I were paid a daily wage like teachers are paid, then I’d rather keep working through the summer, because that’s a good chunk of cash you’re giving up. But teachers aren’t given that option. They have no choice but to take the school vacations off.

Oh yea, and teachers who earn more money make those salaries because they have earned Master’s degrees. Some school districts are kind enough to contribute to the mandated courses that teachers are supposed to take in their nonexistent free time, but in urban districts like Worcester and Brockton, you’re on your own. At Worcester State a class costs about $1,000, and you pretty much have to take one every semester for the rest of your life or you lose your license.

12919836_10208044879013445_6441415091664293530_n

Let’s suppose you have a Master’s Degree and you’re working in the private sector. You’re interested in teaching because Andrew Klein is talking about all the sweet hookups you’re gonna get. Well, let’s look at what you’d be paid to be a first year public school teacher in Lynn with a Master’s Degree:

Screen Shot 2016-04-09 at 12.31.06 PM

$43,636. There is literally NO ONE with that sort of educational background who would take that sort of salary. You don’t need a bachelor’s degree to make $43K. That’s why so many people are leaving the profession, and the only one’s coming in are 22 year olds who have never seen that much money in their lifetime.

teacher-fun

And for what it’s worth, $80,000 is nice, but it really ain’t that much money. And if you think it is, then you’re probably never gonna make a lot of money because you’ve set the bar so low for yourself. This is America, the land of unlimited economic opportunity. People have money to spend and they just need a place to spend it. If you supply that demand then you can be rich. Anyone who is envious of someone else because they make $80,000 a year is a chump.

This Turtleboy has always worked in the private sector. So when I see other people who work in the private sector whining about how easy people in the public sector have it, I wanna laugh at them. The beauty of working in the private sector is the possibilities are limitless. Turtleboy could explode at any moment. We could be making a shitload of money in the next few years. Who knows? That’s part of what makes it fun and exciting. The downfall is that if it doesn’t work out then we’re fucked. But that’s what makes it so exciting.

However, in the public sector there is a ceiling on how much you can make. You know you’ll never be rich, but you’ll never be poor either. It’s not as risky. That’s the whole purpose of working in the public sector. Generally people who pursue this line of work aren’t risk takers. But a society cannot function without teachers and other public sector employees, so we have to offer them health insurance packages that give them incentive to pursue these sorts of jobs.

teacher4

The best part about working in the private sector and not being a teacher is that you can end a relationship with a client if you don’t like them. Some people just aren’t worth the business. But the girl who texted her mother in Brockton and told her to come to school and beat up her teacher will still be in that teacher’s class on Monday. And there’s nothing the teacher can do about it. They must play the hand they’re dealt.

Our society is filled with deadbeats and losers who reproduce like it’s going out of style. They do nothing to raise their children and then expect teachers to fix all their shortcomings. And once a year the newspapers try to humiliate them by publishing MCAS scores and teacher salaries, specifically so morons will draw the conclusion that Andrew Klein did – teachers are lazy. But the reality is that teachers don’t have magical powers to overcome shitty home environments. Then to top it off they make teachers pay out of pocket to be fingerprinted in order to prove that they are not interstate child molesters. Just to let them know that despite all of their hard work and dedication, we still don’t really trust them around kids.

Oh yea, and when a company sends one of it’s employees on a business trip to Phoenix, they usually pay for their plane ticket, hotel, and meals. When they get into the office they know there will be adequate supplies there for them to get the job done. Not teachers though. They pay for all that stuff out of their own pockets.

Last but not least I will tell you about why it’s a million times easier working in the private sector – you can take a dump whenever you want. It’s fabulous. Imagine really having to take a smash and being in a classroom that you know you can’t leave? That sounds horrifying. But teachers do it every single day.

teacher-humor-quotes-meme37

So yea, I could go on and on and on about this, and I’m sure teachers out there reading this could list a whole bunch of stuff that we didn’t. But you get the point. People like Andrew Klein, who think that teachers are overpaid, are morons. Laugh at them, because they are a joke. Because at the end of the day, if teaching was such an easy, lucrative job, then Andrew Klein would’ve been a teacher a long, long time ago. But it’s not, and he knows it, and now you know it too.

common, were talking about people teaching children, these aren’t professors. Their glorified babysitters. I admit they work hard their first couple years making their lesson plans and such, but after that its smooth sailing. Same plan every years, to different, but similar, kids. Do you think a bus drivers route is hard after his 10th year on the job? Plus they do get a ridiculous amount of time off, at least a week of scheduled vacation every couple months (xmas break, thanksgiving, February, april, ALL SUMMER) on top of earned vacation! the fuck outta hereeee. AND THEIR DAY ENDS AT 2-3!!! nurses don’t work that little. Lawyers don’t work that little, court opens at 9 and closes at 4, and yea they gotta do a little work after court too. Its clearly not the hardest job in the world, no offense ladies but plenty of you do it and its well documented women don’t take very demanding jobs due to societal obligations (children, family) WHICH I RESPECT. But as ive said, look at other public employees. District attorneys don’t make that much. most police don’t make that much without over time and they deal with people that require them to wear bullet proof vests. Lets not pretend teachers aren’t what they are, which is teachers of little children who wont remember anything they said or even who they are in a couple years.

Couple comments – I’m fine with people unionizing, but I think its criminal that teachers are forced to join a union, by state law. If a teacher doesn’t want to pay in, they shouldn’t have to. This applies to all fields.

Would also like to mention that private sector employees very rarely clock out after an 8 hour day. To just assume that its teachers only is being dishonest. Most of the actual 8 hour day people are union, who clock in and clock out, unless they work over time. Which is fine, but lets recognize that most jobs require more than a solid 40, in both public and private sectors.

I think people really have to look at this stuff rationally. Everyone gets so emotional over stuff like teacher salaries that the message gets lost real quick.

When people get pissed at teacher salaries, it’s not always about how much they’re making… it’s about how much they’re making even though they’re not all getting the job done. If all the kids were learning and improving and passing and doing well, nobody would care, but let’s face it… kids are failing and many of their teachers have given up and are just phoning it in.

I always hear stuff like lesson planning takes time. What a joke. You show me a teacher with 5 years experience and I’ll show you a 5 year old lesson plan. Grading papers after hours? Please. Teachers assign busy work and grade tests right there in their next class. I went to public school in Worcester and I know for a fact most teachers aren’t putting in anything close to 50 or 60 hour weeks. Many were getting everything done between the bells, if at all. They were lazy. They were incompetent. They simply weren’t doing their jobs. And it wasn’t some battle zone there either. There weren’t daily fights, gangbangers, or parents storming the gates, but yet they still weren’t doing their jobs. And that’s the problem… too many excuses.

Honestly, I say pay all teachers 100K or more and toss in free healthcare! The good ones more than deserve it! But for the love of God, please hold them accountable for performance and get rid of those who can’t get the job done.

There’s too much power in the union keeping bad teachers around and the public wants accountability. The kids deserve accountability. Worcester teachers are paid quite well for their time compared to their peers across the nation so there’s nothing wrong with expecting moderate levels of success. Not the shitshow we currently seem to be getting each year.

  • Light'em up
    April 11, 2016 at 11:08 am

Please do not forget the fact that we are talking tax-payer funded jobs vs private for-profit businesses.
he taxpayers have been fleeced enough with union negotiated wages and protections on firing the bad employees.

Fiestylawyerlady, your going to the wrong WalMart. You need to to try the one in Leicester and don’t go to the one in the hood. I’ve been to the one in Worcester once and the place was a pig pen, with a lot of riff raff roaming the aisles. Not to mention you have to worry about your car getting scratched by all the ghetto cars in the lot.

You are the third person to say this recently. I think I have been there before. Do they at least stock consistently? Reddog, you need to park way in the back to avoid those cars, that’s what I do. Sometimes I park so far away I may as well go dressed in workout gear. I agree teachers have a thankless job and God bless them for doing it, but your comment about a “million times easier working in the private sector “…… I don’t think so, and the majority in private sector work way more than 40 hours a week (without OT $ – it’s expected) & not counting onerous commuting time. Just pointing that out

    • Mr. E
      April 10, 2016 at 11:16 am

If that is the case then you happen to be a salaried employee which may in fact work more than 40 hours a week, also probably making OK money being a salaried employee and all. if you’re in in ploy E being paid by the hour and you’re working more than 40 hours a week and not being paid for it, you’re an idiot because that’s A violation of several laws.
Why don’t you just say what your job and salary are so we can critique you?

Yes. Which is why they somewhat expect to work more than 40 hours per week. And hope to receive fair compensation for doing so as part of their overall salary. But nobody is working more than 40 hours a week not being paid for more if they are working more as was implied in the post I replied to.

No, I worked in an office and construction environment as a *salaried* employee. Not an *hourly* retail employee.

Hey pal, I know the difference between exempt and non-exempt employees. Wal-Mart also has exempt employees, meaning that they are salaried employees forced to work over 40 hours per week for no additional compensation. Not all retail employees are hourly.

when you factor in the pensions, shorter hours and Summer’s off, teachers make much more than they otherwise would in the private sector. Private sector doesn’t work 40 hours a week, at least not any job that makes more than a teacher. Cherry picking one of the biggest dumps in the state, Lynn, and saying all teachers don’t make a lot just doesn’t add up. Maybe you should point out the average salary at Google, assume all private sector employees make that much, then complain about the difference. For the most part a teachers alternative isn’t a highly paid job like engineering or finance…it’s usually whatever job the English majors get that doesn’t pay their student loans, and plenty of those jobs pay less than teachers.

The default argument for many of these fools is “teachers make more money and have better benefits than the private sector”, which could not be more wrong in many cases. Corporations like Education First and others are, depending on the company, offering compensation packages with a retirement vehicle (401k/ 403B, etc), unlimited vacation policies, phenomenal work environments, conferences across the country and world and chance to travel. As someone mentioned above, there is a ceiling which limits compensation and private sector travel perks, (unless your Tracy Crowe).

One issue, teachers *do* get paid for the summer. Both my mother and Pastor work in the public schools, I would know.

    • April 9, 2016 at 7:56 pm

No, they don’t. Your mother elected to get paid less for each paycheck so that she could receive checks throughout the whole year. This is a common practice. We also inserted a meme in the blog addressing this very topic. This is not an opinion, it is a scientific fact.

Yet their salary is still X, for only X days of work a year. The argument TB uses about teachers putting extra time in is pretty silly too – lots of salaried professionals are still in the ballpark of 50-60 hours a week just as part of their job.

      And they get:

      Every stupid Federal “holiday” off

      Several days for Thanksgiving
      A week for Xmas
Typically several days for New Years
      A week in February
      A week in April

And, their own vacation days to use.

It is certainly in their favor, but I think a lot of people are dismissing the fact that teachers are dealing with scores of kids, and most people can barely control the one or two they have themselves.

They have a lot to do at their job. That’s their job. And they do it from behind a desk. Using the same curriculum, year, after year, after year. Hardly an excuse to get supremely overpaid.

I was going to reply to this idiot on FB and I ALMOST hit reply until I realized I would be tore his rectum so bad that I was afraid my profile would end up here… LOL! So, instead I let it go.

You bring up a great point about teachers and home environment. People send their children to school and expect teachers to fix the problems that are created in the home. If little Johnny is an asshole, chances are his parents aren’t that far off. Of course that’s not always the case, but for the most part it is. Teachers are definitely NOT overpaid. Their work doesn’t end when they walk inside of their home like most people. It takes compassion, patience, and a special heart to be a teacher.

Hey Turtle can you address the bitch on the original Brockton post. I’m pretty sure she’s waiting for you. She posted 719 paragraphs of pure anger. I don’t have the heart to reply because I don’t do well with people who should be in a straight jacket.

I’m pretty sure turtle isn’t addressing her for the same reason you aren’t addressing her. It’s obvious that she has some deep rooted issues. I thought for a moment about addressing her myself, but I’m white, so according to her, I’m spending too much time with my son or daughter who apparently has to be a drug addict, or chasing my husband around who is apparently looking for prostitutes. I do so love how all the people who claim that everyone else is a racist, always seems to have these preconceived notions about every other race. Especially considering that I was always under the impression that racism was the act of judging someone with preconceived notions on the basis of the color of someone’s skin. I like to think of it this way, if you judge someone on their appearance, race, height, weight, anything to do with how the person looks, you’re not a racist, you’re an asshat. And just as you did in the previous article, the best way to deal with that, is just t ignore or not respond to that. Which is why I think it’s extra funny that certain things are being blocked from the comments…. Because in this situation, it’s absolutely appropriate. I am a teacher. I don’t want to read how some asshat thinks I get paid to much for the 800 hours I work a year that aren’t in my paycheck! I actually have friends that are angry that I get a 10 percent discount on my phone bill for being a teacher! Oh, the horror, I save myself 9 whole dollars a month because I’m a teacher! Even better that all they can do on this article is thumbs down everything… Lol! Oh no… My comment got 16 thumbs down and two likes…… I guess I’ll go find a rope and a closet……… Anywho, great article turtle!
Ps… I’m embarrassed to say that I did actually go back to see if the bra was dirty……..lol!

Well, I’m white too so I guess according to her we are both racist! She really is insane, though. I believe she replied to every single person. It’s probably the mother herself. She can’t control herself so runs into a classroom to threaten a teacher, it so closely resembles her inability to let anyone here have an opinion that differs from her own. She HAS to reply 10x to every single person! I’m with you and believe that being a teacher is one of the toughest jobs. I can’t imagine having to deal with an entire classroom of children when sometimes my own child makes me want to hide in a corner for 10 minutes and NOT be an adult, and I LOVE my child!!

What kind of friends would get mad at such a small discount? That’s insane. I have a few friends who teach, and from what I see, they never have a day off. They work even from home. During the summer is no different. They are already thinking of the upcoming school year. It’s also very sad that a teacher needs to dig into their own money for supplies. This is why I always buy stuff from the supply list for my child’s school. I do it at least once a month!

I am glad that I have the heart to only judge a person based off of personality alone. I don’t care about race, appearance, ect. If someone is nice, then I am cool. If not, then I’m in Godzilla mode…lol

P.S. The bra was dirty though! Did you catch the nip slip? I didn’t the first time someone pointed it out to me.

        Have a great weekend!

Andrew Klein is and always has been an asshat. He also argued with me that 50+ women were lying about being raped by Bill Cosby to extort money from him. That was the final straw. He’s basically a piece of shit mansplainer who can’t even see his own white privilege & ignorance. He also complains that fat girls get love but chubby men don’t. Don’t take anything he says seriously, he’s literally scum of the earth:

As soon as you said white privilege and mansplaining – you lost any shred of credibility.

When he is convicted in a court of law, by a jury of his peers, we will know. Until then, all that has happened is a bunch of accusations without any concrete verification.

Teacher here, 28 years. You covered almost everything, but the latest is the Sheltered English Instruction. Thanks to Boston Public Schools screwing up some paper work and pissing off the Department of Justice (look it up, it’s true and terrible and insane) all Mass teacher must take this 12 week, 3 hours/ afternoon evening, with more papers and readings than I did in many of my Masters program classes. And guess how much we are compensated for these 36 hours after school? Zero. Nothing. If that was not enough, the entire curriculum was created by previously mentioned Department of Justice-and it is as terrible as you can imagine. But please tell me again what an easy job I have.

No, actually. We aren’t allowed to have one. Soda machines are banned from schools.
