Really sad story out of West Brookfield when three Quaboag Regional High School students were tragically killed in a car accident yesterday. It’s a bit of a cliche, but our thoughts and prayers are with their families at this tough time. If a high school student dies, it’s a tragedy. It happens every so often, and it’s something that profoundly affects the school community for the rest of their lives. An acquaintance of mine was killed freshmen year of high school when he was hit by a driver near Route 20. I’ll always think about what could’ve been with him, no matter how old I get, even though we weren’t really close.

But three student is a whole different animal. Especially in a small community like this, with a school that I assume has a population of around 500. How they can ever move on from this is beyond me. There are no words.

Nevertheless, opportunists have come out of the woodworks. For some reason this Masslive articllinked to this GoFundMewhich was started just hours after the students died:

A $6,000 GoFundMe, written by a guy who clearly struggles with the English language and claims that he’s going to “split the monery 3 ways a nd let the families decide” what to do with it. Sounds legit.

This is Derek Worthingon, the GoFundMe creator:

We messaged this bootleg Al Borland to ask if he had contacted the family prior to starting this, and what his connection was to them?

We have the names of the students but we also have the decency to not to report it until the authorities deem it appropriate. But does he even know their names? He doesn’t even say what his connection to the families is.

This was the conversation that proved that his kid was “best friends” with the deceased:

“Best friends.”

But where was the proof that the families “thanked him” as he claims? Maybe they did, maybe they didn’t. But if I lost my child the last thing I’d do is reach out to some local chud to thank him for starting a GoFundMe without my consent.

For the record, I don’t think this is a scam. No one would ever be that brazen or stupid. Even in Warren. But what he’s trying to do here is take advantage of this tragedy in order to turn himself into a hero, which in my opinion is almost as bad. Check out what he posted all over the Warren Police Department’s Facebook page right after they posted the news:

Oh get over yourself. He can’t wait to get their permission to start a fundraiser in their children’s honor because by then their “15 minutes” will be over and this tragedy will be forgotten? What a slugrake.

“I’m doing what I think will be best for the families in the long run?”

Oh yea dude, because you, a complete stranger, know what’s best for them.

Then this cocky mother fucker has the nerve to say,

“I have a feeling the families will be happy around x mas when they spernt all their money on funerals that they will be able to afford Xmas presents for any kids or family. So say what you will, I enjoy doing good deeds and I know this is a good deed and NO ONE will make me feel bad about it.”

I cannot tell you how enraging it is to read that. This mother fucker knows the familiy’s finances? He’s their white knight saving Christmas for them? He’s gonna make them “happy?” They can’t afford Christmas presents without his philanthropy of an arbitrary dollar amount he decided to raise for them? He enjoys doing good deeds?

Sit down and shut the fuck up dude. This ain’t your place. This is a terrible tragedy, and no one asked for you to come along and play the hero. Clearly he was hoping for more responses like this:

He doesn’t have a “huge heart.” He has a huge hero complex. It took him all of five seconds to make this GFM. He embellished his kid’s relationship with them by calling him “best friends” with the victims, even though the kid never said that in the text message he sent us. He’s since stopped responding to us.

It’s also not the first time he’s played the white knight with a GoFundMe:

Yea, donate $5,000 to the “Worthington Warriors,” a non-existent 501c3 that helps disabled, elderly, and low income folks by shoveling their snow. If you donate $5,000 it will magically become a real non-profit, and Derek Worthington will be able to save the world some more. Sounds legit.

The bottom line here is that you never, ever, ever start a GoFundMe without the permission of those who will be receiving the money. Charities should be sanctioned to make sure they’re legit, and people know who to give to. And what an absolute joke Masslive is for linking to it:

West Brookfield resident Derek Worthington started a GoFundMe page to raise funds for the victims’ families.

On the page he writes, “No amount of money can bring these children back but we hope we can do what we can so the families have one less thing to worry about.”

It’s almost as if we’re the only media outlet that actually does our research. Unlike Masslive who gives Derek Worthington the only thing he really wanted – positive attention.

“They will be able to afford Xmas presents for any other kids or family.”

I love how he talks about how he owns 2 businesses (as if that absolves anyone from ever wanting more money), yet you go to the FB pages for them and realize: not only are they basically the same company, they’re going out of business any day now.
