The following is the summer reading list for Auburn High School this year:

See that book, “Symptoms of Being Human” by Jeff Garvin? Yea, here’s what it’s about: Alright, well, this is completely inappropriate brainwashing of children. Turtleboy is a firm supporter of public schools and public education. But stuff like this just gives the haters fuel for the fire. Here’s the two biggest problems with this:

  • Gender fluid? Seriously? Gender fluid means, “denoting or relating to a person who does not identify themselves as having a fixed gender.” In other words, it’s someone who can’t make up their mind and wants attention. Today they could be a girl, tomorrow they could be a boy. You’ll have to follow them on IG to figure out which pronoun to call them today. The fact that this is being promoted by the Auburn Public Schools is insane.
  • Riley, the gender fluid punk rock rebellious teenager, must overcome his “uber-conservative” congressman father. Because the message is clear – conservatives are the antagonists. They are the bad guys standing in the way of progress. Free spirit children must overcome them. This is insulting to every Auburn High School student whose parents have the audacity to be conservative.

Here’s my question – where are the classics? I haven’t read the rest of those books, so many of them could be brainwashing political propaganda like Symptoms of Being Human clearly is. But I don’t see any of the following GREAT pieces of literature on that list:

  • Fahrenheit 451
  • 1984
  • Animal Farm
  • Brave New World
  • East of Eden
  • Catcher in the Rye
  • Lord of the Flies
  • Warriors Don’t Cry – the Melba Beals Little Rock 9 story (amazing book)
  • To Kill a Mockingbird
  • Night
  • Uncle Tom’s Cabin
  • The Call of the Wild
  • Moby Dick
  • The Great Gatsby
  • The Scarlett Letter
  • A Farewell To Arms
  • The Color Purple
  • Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
  • The Grapes of Wrath

I could list dozens more. All of those books deal with applicable themes or historical time periods that kids will learn about in school. Many (1984, Brave New World, Scarlett Letter) deal with themes that directly apply to the time period they’re living in now. But instead of encouraging our kids to read these classics, the Auburn Public Schools want you to read about the gender fluid kid rebelling against his uber-conservative congressman father.

Jeff Garvin (the author who will profit off of this) is a full time SJW twitter activist as well. He supports making a designated “third gender”:

He was really upset when President Trump left the bathroom issue up to the states, and believed it would lead to more hate crimes and fear:

He believes that the black lives matter folks who blockade highways, yell slurs at the cops, spread lies, kill police officers (Dallas, Baton Rouge), and have called for the abolishment of the police as a whole, are the modern day equivalent of Martin Luther King Jr:

He thinks that white people should avoid talking about racism because they just don’t get it:

He plans to use his white privilege to fix everything:

And he spread the lies and myths about hate crimes after Trump’s election, most of which have been thoroughly debunked at this point:

Look, you can support transgender rights, and that’s fine by me. But the fact of the matter is a lot of parents have a problem with it, and there’s nothing wrong with that either. One state over in Connecticut a BOY just won the girl’s 100 and 200 meter district championships in GIRL’S track. Parents of all the hard working girls that HE defeated were forced to accept this in the name of social progress. This isn’t harmless. It’s a direct assault on our daughters. Athletic scholarships are being taken away from them by people with penises who have simply declared that they are female. It’s perfectly normal to think that this isn’t OK.

Fictional literature that’s taught in schools isn’t just entertaining fairy tales. They’re read and discussed in schools because the themes are important. They teach us about good and evil. What happens when you focus too much on materialism? Find out in the Great Gatsby. What can white people do to help fight for civil rights? Find out in To Kill A Mockingbird. Why does communism sound good on paper but bad in practice? Find out in Animal Farm. What was slavery really like, and how did books influence the abolition movement? Find out in Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Why was World War 1 and war in general so bad? Find out in A Call To Arms. As you’re growing older and becoming an adult, do you have any fears about adulthood? Do you hate all the phonies? Do you generally like to complain about everything and wanna see what it’s like to call a hooker to your hotel room in New York before running away scared? You’re gonna love this whiny little Holden Caufield booger when you realize kids have had these same fears since the 1950’s and beyond.

These are all important themes for kids to read about. Teaching kids the importance of gender fluid teenagers rebelling against their politically conservative parents isn’t. Because it’s not the job of the schools to determine that one side of this debate is good and the other is bad. But that’s what they are doing by promoting this book to their students.

If you’re an Auburn parent and you want an explanation for how this made it onto the reading list, or why kids are being taught that people who have a problem with the transgender agenda are automatically bigots, here is the contact information for the superintendent and principal of Auburn High School:

I read “Never Cry Wolf” by the great Farley Mowat when I was in 8th grade on the recommendation of my English teacher. It was not assigned, but I was a voracious reader and needed “more”. I loved the book, and I went on to read “People of the Deer” by Mowat. Both great books. Both not about a man, really, but about a person connecting with nature and in the process understanding more about how we connect with, and are connected to, nature. Of course, I highly doubt anyone picked this book, it has, you know, big words, and the reader might GASP! identify with a white, patriarchal male archetype, so yeah, read the other book that you don’t identify with so you can feel better about yourself.

Summer reading lists are bullshit anyway. Tell the kids they have to read a set number of books of their appropriate reading level or higher, and let them pick the books.

One year I read Nothing Lasts Forever (the book Die Hard is based on) and Black Like Me. Another year I read Catch 22 and 1984.

It’s hard enough getting kids to read. Let them pick books that cover something that interests them, and will engage them. If that’s Moneyball and The Wolf of Wall Street – then so be it.

I’m not saying that the book in question is not clearly pandering to a specific audience. And I’m not saying that the book doesn’t look like a poorly written piece of garbage. It really does seem like this guy is a total hack and is trying to grasp onto the progressive zeitgeist to have a chance in hell of selling books. In that sense, I think that they should nix it from the list. But I AM going to say that there are some massive holes in your arguments. Your main argument is that the book should not be on a reading list because some parents may disagree with the message being conveyed. If you’re saying that, then you’re essentially saying it’s also not okay to assign material like The Color Purple because some parents may be offended by content about racism. Should we not teach proven science to christian kids because their parents will be offended? Can parents really protect their kids from reality and still make sure they are educated? For a blog that is always agressively calling out people who are easily offended you are lightening quick to throw that all away when people offend your conservative sensibilities. Do you think that the first time The Color Purple was assigned reading, that parents weren’t up in arms? Of course they were. The works that you site were books that were all extremely controversial. And ironically many of the books you referenced were not only paradigm shifting but were also critical of authority. In fact, many of those books were critical of values currently held by the far right. So why are you upset that a book is examining authoritarianism and opression when all of the other books you praised deal with the very same theme? And how can you be upset that conservatives are being unfairly stereotyped as backwards antagonists when you are rallying against a book that is an optional choice on a reading list? How can you espouse the first ammendment when this blog entry and its call to action likened you to a modern day book burner? Then you try to make yourself appear diplomatic by saying that you don’t mind if people support trans rights. You just don’t think their kids should be able to choose to read a book over the summer about a trans kid. If you’re trying to convince us that you have a “live and let live” philosophy, you are failing miserably. And are you really insinuating that a hardcore traditional conservative wouldn’t cause strife in the life of their transgender child? How can you be offended by that insinuation when you literally defend conservative parents who don’t even want their kids to be exposed to a BOOK about a transgender person. You blatantly admit that conservatives have an issue with trans people and then you’re indignant that a book would portray a conservative as an antagonist to their trans child. And if you really do have a problem with books that praise rebellious youth who angstily distance themselves from their parents then you need to cross The Catcher in the Rye off of your own list. You are saying that refusing to accept a human being for how they choose to identify is not standing in the way of progess- just a difference of opinion, right? Just like some people used to hold the opinion that slavery wasn’t that bad. The most respectable part of this blog entry is that you admitted that you believe trans people are just attention whores- not people with different psychology and physiology, right? Caitlin is a stupid cunt but she’s far from an accurate representation of trans people and what their lives are actually like. Trans people get attention, alright. When they’re beaten to death in back alleys and subway stations. But why would you self appointed vigilantes stand up for human rights when you can shelter others from a book, right? And the sad thing is the next blog is probably going to be about how some liberal SJW snowflake got offended by a swastika or something. They should have gotten offended by more important shit, right? Like a summer reading list in a school district where they probably dont even live.

You can’t even reply with a single valid rebuttal to any of the points I made. Sure could I have been more concise, yes! But please try to convince me that you are all not massive hypocrites. You can’t. So why don’t you shut the fuck up?

      Paragraphs. Do you use them?

If you expect anyone to cogently refute your argument, try not throwing a wall of text at them.

Can’t decide what your gender is? Here’s what you do. Drop you pants and look between your legs. Ask a bystander if you have a penis or a vagina. Penis = male, vagina = female. Problem solved.

I’m sure this isn’t the complete list of every book these kids are required to read in high school. Honestly, I can’t imagine going through school and not being required to read many of the books that Turtleboy listed. 1984 and Animal Farm should be mandatory reading for all high school kids.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that book being an option, as it’s likely that the kids who will choose to read a book with that subject matter are already SJW’s in the making. If it was REQUIRED reading, my opinion would change. Not knowing the themes/content of the other books makes it difficult (for me) to label this liberal/SJW propaganda as it is possible that some of the other books have a more conservative theme. Not likely, but possible.

“Why does communism sound good on paper but bad in practice? Find out in Animal Farm.”

Since most public schools are infested with liberal activists who, given their druthers, would prefer to live in a communist society, is it any wonder why Animal Farm is missing from the summer reading list?

Children wouldn’t even know what transgender is if it weren’t for SJW’s encouraging boys to act like girls. More BS! Then you wonder why Trump is President.

I’ve never understood how they can “FORCE” kids to read over the summer, they aren’t in school. Who the hell do they think they are to force anything on my kid when he/she isn’t in school. I would simply tell them all to fuck off, my kid is out of school, that’s where your control ends. My kid isn’t doing anything this summer but having fun, period.

They won’t make them read A Inconvenient Truth lest they realize how full of shit the liberal agenda is. Have them research the lineage of Elizabeth Warren and then discuss the high cost of college and phony professors getting 400K to teach one class. That should wake the kids up to reality. Even better have them read TB for a week.

Actually, no. Go to Cumby’s. Lots of their staff, particularly at night, are “boys” who were born female. They must have a hiring manager that’s a dyke, the place is loaded with them. One, store I won’t mention, has been transitioning into “Josh” for several years. Has a scruffy beard right now.

If that makes somebody happy, fine. I could care less. Just sell me my coffee. However, shoving the “gay is OK” down the throats of impressionable young kids is flat out immoral. It is just as wrong as “gay is a mental disease”. Let the kids be kids, grow up however they are to be and let them form their own opinions.

Some High Schools have their staff choose books which they choose to read and lead a discussion on. Once those books are compiled, the student body chooses one they like to read. Then in the fall, they meet for a discussion and pass in a journal they keep about the book itself.

It’s not about forcing anyone to read any of the books, the kids have a choice what to read and the kids who will choose this book will have a vested interest in the subject matter.
