A few weeks ago we blogged about the Police Chief in Barre who was being fired for being “too nice.” Since then his story has caught on because of its utter absurdity. We don’t know everything involved in this story, but we do know that the eight full time police officers under his watch voted no confidence in him. Basically from what we understand there’s just a lot of the standard stuff that happens in any workplace when some people don’t like their boss. Since then a selectman has been recalled and the tides have turned in the favor of Chief Demetropoulos, which apparently led to the resignation of another high ranking officer:

TurtlegramSgt. Robert J. Deschenes has resigned from the town’s troubled Police Department. Selectman Richard J. Jankauskas, who was reappointed chairman this week by the board and who is the target of a recall election next month, read the Deschenes letter, which was more than one page long, to the board Monday night.

“I regret to inform you that I have retired from the law enforcement,” Mr. Jankauskas said, reading from the sergeant’s letter.

“Due to the recent circus that has ensued, I feel that I can no longer effectively perform my duties as police sergeant,” the chairman read from the Deschenes letter.

The resignation comes after fallout over the selectmen’s recent decision not to renew the contract for Police Chief Erik J. Demetropoulos. The labor union representing all eight full-time policemen called for the removal of the chief after the men voted “no confidence” in him. During a meeting in December, Sgt. Deschenes said: “The Barre Police Department is having problems.”

The resignation letter read Monday from the sergeant said, “A hostile work environment and current status of the Police Department has caused me emotional distress, mental duress, work-related anxiety, several health problems, to include stomach issues, headaches, and lack of sleep.

“My fear, if I continue in this toxic environment, my health will deteriorate further. In the past several weeks I have never been more embarrassed, ashamed, humiliated, and disgusted by the actions of individuals who have no knowledge about what they are talking about but continue to spread untruthful rumors. Leadership’s lack of control of all of the above has made it even less tolerable. I’ve worked extremely hard over the years; this decision did not come easy. The issues we are currently dealing with were never meant to be perceived the way they were. But due to the outfall and misguided media coverage, it has ballooned into a spectacle that is currently out of control. … A decade ago, I came to Barre, hoping my leadership would help a place that was riddled with negativity and constantly in the papers for the wrong reasons.”

Look, we support police here at Turtleboy Sports, so this is a weird one because it’s cop vs. cop. But from the looks of this, give me a freaking break. His “health will deteriorate?” Emotional distress? Mental duress? Work-related anxiety? What kind of social justice warrior bullshit excuses are those? These are the kinds of things you say when you need a safe space. Give me a break. Like I said, we have no idea what’s going on within that department, but they’re not invading Fallujah. They’re policing a small town in the middle of nowhere. If you get mental duress from policing in Barre, then maybe a career change is in order.

And I’m sorry, you don’t like your boss? Welcome to America, where we all hate our boss because we’re smarter than them. Part of being a grownup is accepting this and coming to terms with it.

Look, we have no idea what’s going on here. The chief is well respected in the community but clearly not liked by his subordinates, as is the Sergeant. On the one hand, I like a manager who has control of his clubhouse, and clearly the chief has lost control of his team. On the other hand, the chief serves the people, not the police officers, and the people like the chief.

But the bottom line is that we like our cops tough, rugged, and old school. All this feel-good, namby-pamby, safe space bullshit that has pervaded American culture needs to end. And the fact of the matter is that Sgt. Deschenes is using this SJW terminology to pretend like he’s retiring because he fears for his life. Just man up and admit it – I don’t like the chief and I’m not working for him anymore. We can respect that. People do this all the time. No big deal. But instead we got this load of crap, which quite frankly sounds like he’s prepping to collect a disability pension because of all the “emotional distress” he’s had working for a boss who he doesn’t care for. I’m sure this guy was a great cop, and I’m sure he served the community and did a great job. But just walk away if you’re gonna walk away.

  • You want stress Sarg?
    April 29, 2016 at 10:55 am

Does that Sergeant want to see real stress? How about a couple of tours of duty down Main South in Worcester with every scum bag on earth carrying a gun, a knife and an iPhone waiting to record you out of context with Hector Pineiro at the ready and no backing from city hall. Especially if you get hurt.

Lived in Barre for years, this cop prayed on teen age kids leaving the high school in there vehicles. He Sat on the side of the road with his windows down and if the radio was to loud or the exhaust a tad loud he would ticket them to the fullest extent. He is now leaving since he will not be appointed chief of police due to Eric staying on board. Eric is one of the finest police officers that I know. Sargent Douchebag don’t let the door hit you in the assignment on the way out !!

I am not for his letter as work is stress …

But I would imagine the stress is the heroin increase with no busts. Small town they know where it is but nothings done. That might be why the vote of no confidence.

Turtleboy, why did you post the worst picture of that family? They all look angry but I bet there is at least one picture where they all don’t look so miserable.

This guy is right on the money. Being a cop in Barre is almost as exciting as being a DPW for the town. Close a street, fill a pothole and stand around drinking a coffee. The town can only afford filling one pothole a year because the entire budget is spent on 10 councilors, assistants and assistants to the assistants.

How long are you supposed to keep a rectal thermometer in? It’s been a couple days now. I lost the instructions so any help is appreciated.

I would love to see some of these pussy town “cops” work in the city. They wouldn’t last a day before running home crying to their mamas.

I used to work in Barre. I came across heroin addicts, dealers, bangers, and all that goes with it a good 10 years before the H epidemic really seemed to roll out in Worcester. Grim town, devoid of hope or opportunity, in the middle of fuck all nowhere. Last one out turn off the lights, assuming the utility bill has even been paid…

Sorry Kibbe but Barre isn’t central America. Do kids in Barre do drugs? Probably because the only future they can look forward to is flipping burgers or pole dancing in Worcester.

Police in Worcester have an entirely different situation. Every 15 minutes they get a call about a suspect in a Turtleboy hoodie robbing a liquor store. They have to arrest the same asshole again that they arrested the day before. WHY? Because the judges use the catch and release program.

BWAHAHAHA… What happened to “where are da white woman at?” You just totally revealed yourself! A totally normal, rational thinking paragraph with absolutely no slang or ghetto talk? Why am I the only one who noticed this??

Well you try being a cop in Barre. Sure there is the occasional 911 call about a lost dog but then you sit in a cruiser all day and play candy crush. Early retirement with full benefits paid by the state. You would be an idiot if you didn’t.

    • RSA
      April 28, 2016 at 7:47 pm

There’s no cell service in Barre. He’s relegated to playing solitaire on his cruiser’s laptop.
