BBC Owner Issues PR Diarrhea Statement After Getting Called Out For Not Paying Employees

We have an update on the story published earlier about the British Beer Company’s owner Gary Simon telling his GM’s that employees would not be getting paid this week, presumably for work they’ve already completed.

First, they came after an employee who blew the whistle and posted about it on Facebook.

“There is no money.”

OK, then close the restaurant. Sell it. Fire everyone. In the meantime pay them what you owe them. Telling your employees you don’t have the money you owe them is not acceptable in any way, shape, or form. If you don’t can’t afford one week worth of payroll and you have multiple franchises, then you’re running a bootleg business.

You’re still doing takeout right? If so then every single dime you bring in should be going to employees. You can pay your rent after that. Trust me, they’ll be forgiving. Your employees don’t have that luxury. You’ve been open for 23 years. You’ve opened over a dozen franchises. You don’t do that if you’re piss broke.

Then Gary Simon issued a press release on the BBC’s Facebook page.

He took all day to come up with this PR diarrhea?

Gary Simon: “We 100% will be paying our employees what they earned.”

Also Gary Simon: “We did not decide overnight to not pay everyone”

So…..are you paying people Friday or not? And what kind of car you driving dude? I have a hard time believing you’re cash broke. Take out a loan. Do something. Paying your employees nothing on Friday for work they’ve already is an unacceptable solution. Period.

And to make matters worse they started deleting all the comments that started coming in calling out their bullshit.

Almost as bad as this asshole.

Don’t worry though, Josh’s comments weren’t taken down.

“Business owners carry the risk.”

Yes, they do. He took a risk that something like this could happen, and in that event he still needs to pay his employees. And when you own 9 franchises you’re probably doing OK for yourself. Just sayin.

      March 27, 2020 at 12:01 pm

The issue is not continuing to pay his employees, it is paying his employees for the hours they have already worked in for which they are owed remuneration . If he does not pay them, it’s a violation of law.

    • Gary can still fuck off
      March 27, 2020 at 1:12 pm

How many employees were not paid their final check from the Cheesecake Factory? Answer not fuckin one. No one has an issue about laying people off but to not pay them is another story. Idiot.

Seriously? Everyone bashing Gary is just shouting out a bunch of insults with a serious lack of knowledge and facts. We are in the middle of a pandemic and the largest federal bail out in the history of our country. That bailout is because of situations like this. There is absolutely no way that small business owners could have predicted this and prepare for it. Restaurants operate on a tiny profit margin. That doesn’t change because you have 1 or 9. It is a very delicate balance and accounting is complicated not cut and dry. To drop in sales that severely and then close, there is likely no money what so ever to make payroll. For those saying to just pay them, liquid assets ect. You are being ignorant. It doesn’t work like that and even if he wanted to do that it would still take time! Who is going to buy these assets you want him to liquidate in the middle of this nonsense. Taking out a loan also takes time especially given what is going on right now. Employees will get their money faster when the bailout goes through as he is suggesting. His company is NOT the only one in this position. I understand that the employees deserve to be paid and it is frustrating and scary to be facing this but it is equally upsetting to the business owners loosing their business. All the drama, rumors and judgement people are spreading are only further damaging this business and can easily cost them the ability to reopen and recover which will cost 1000s of employees their jobs permanently! How is this the way to handle it in the middle of an unprecedented crisis?

Lastly I have worked with and for the company and Gary. BBC and Gary have worked incredibly hard over 23 years to be active members of local communities, are actively involved in fundraising in their communities and have taken care of MANY employees over the years. They care about their employees a great deal and if he had any way to pay people I assure you he would! He has said ultimately he will find a way and he absolutely will. I understand employees want it now but unfortunately now isn’t possible and this is occurring nation wide. He is not a irresponsible owner by any means and trashing his reputation at a time like this is pretty terrible.

    • Gary still a POS
      March 26, 2020 at 8:27 am

No what is pretty terrible is the fact good old Gary couldn’t run his most likely 8 figure business in a responsible way. The fact that he can’t come up with 120k to pay his employees shows he has no clue how to run a business of that scale.
I am sick of hearing about the excuses of the pandemic when we have shuttered for a whopping two weeks so far. There is no way a stable business that is run by competent people runs out of cash flow within 2 weeks. We have had a record economy for more than the last year and businesses including restaurants have been making record profits. His use of the pandemic as an excuse is pathetic. And yes ol Garry has plenty of assets, stocks, securities that he could easily liquidate to make the payroll.

If he has no means to raise a measly 120k after running a multi million dollar business than there is only one reason .
The business is headed down the toilet to begin with, he has mismanaged it and now he is using the pandemic for an excuse.

Oh that’s right he has done so much for the community, what a joke. If he really wants to help the community then pay your help and burden yourself with the 120k deficit you created, not them.

    • richyrich
      March 27, 2020 at 9:21 am

It’s not a matter of thin margins or running a restaurant chain, which is enormously complex, with a lot of moving parts and challenges that cause most to fail within the first year. Gary obviously knows what he is doing. It is a matter of law, which he is violating by not paying his employees for hours already worked. I know almost nothing about BBC (other than the fact that the food is mediocre) but I would not be surprised to find that he has regularly pulled all retained earnings out of the company, which is his prerogative, but if I was in his shoes, I would find the $ to pay his employees for hours worked, or he will have various states’ attorneys general up his ass, or worse yet, a PR backlash that could very well close down his business.

There is “French Cuisine”. There is “Fine Italian Dining”. So, if you say “the food is mediocre”, well, I can’t help but think that this is an accurate description of what passes for mealtime on the British Isles.

This whole blog series comes of like a Bernie Bro wrote it. Everyone thinks that owners of large businesses are all well off millionaires, and yes, some are. But there are a whole mess of business owners out there that run their business just like a paycheck to paycheck household, if not worse. They see big account Balances and don’t think about the fact that a lot of times, that money isn’t really theirs. All but a typically small portion belongs to vendors, employees, the govt, etc. They run up credit card balances and borrow (take) money from the business for personal investments, homes, cars, vacations etc etc. They’re really no different than the “rich” couple next door that’s living the life on the outside, but has their house mortgaged to the hilt, sky high CC balances, but don’t have the cash to support themselves longer than a shitty snowstorm on a long weekend…

The one very important piece of his ‘reasoning’ to not pay employees is his lack of incoming money. But, he also broadly and publicly voices that it’s as simple as his employees not having to pay mortgages and bills because…laws (lol). Well Here’s a statement the dumbass should’ve thought thru more – tell my employees they don’t have to pay mortgages/utilities. But, on the flip side, this blithering Idiot forget there will be smarter peeps that will pick up on his stupidity and see past him blowing theories out his ass to get away with cheating and harming others. Stop being a dick and pay your employees!! After all, you don’t have to pay your mortgages or other bills! (Waiting for him to post about how it’s illegal for Unc and his employees for publicly post copies of and wording from his emails.

As far as I know Laws still DO APPLY during this crisis! MA has offered small businesses loans so that this shit doesn’t happen! He would not have to pay back for 6 mos after the crisis! He cannot expect people to work and not be paid!! He wouldn’t like it if it were him or his family! Take the loan, pay your employees and call it a day! We own a small business and we would go into hock before we didn’t pay an employee!! This whole this is ludicrous!! And….any employee who bitched on his pages should be apologized to!! No repercussions! I feel sorry for his employees but maybe this is a sign that they should find a better working environment!

The stock is doing well and there is no reason to be claiming poverty unless he’s waiting on a bailout and claiming larger losses is going to benefit his wallet. Lots of companies will be doing this…or, he dipped into the company to pay for a lifestyle that he overcharged for. This doesn’t mean he can’t afford to pay employees. It means he is CHOOSING a lifestyle over paying his employees.

I just looked on glass door. Two servers reported that a server is paid $3.00 to $4.00 dollars per hour. I realize other positions pay differently but none are earning big paychecks. A huge fuck you to this ass hole and anyone that supports him. There is no way he runs his business so thin he can’t cover a weeks payroll. Even if he does he should short creditors and suppliers before an employee’s final paycheck. Even if that’s not possible, as others have pointed out. This fucking douche bag definitely has either cash on hand, assets he could fire sale, or a credit line he could secure. I fucking guarantee if his home were to be repoed to pay employees what’s lawfully owed, he’d find a way to pay up real fucking quick.

It’s unreasonable to expect him to hock his car right away to put towards his obligation.
