Hi long time fan of all your work! A relative of mine is about to start Belmont High School and the only book she was required to read before entering 9th grade was “The Hate U Give,” which they describe as “a young adult novel by Angie Thomas. It follows a protagonist drawn to activism after she witnesses the police shooting of her friend” interesting that they would require an entire grade to read a book that is anti police. We have family members who are police officers and they are really disappointed. Figured you might want to be made aware in case anything else ends up coming out of the school district in the future.

Here’s Belmont High School’s summer reading list.

This is the plot according to Wikipedia:

Starr Carter is a 16-year-old who lives in two worlds: the poor black neighborhood, Garden Heights, where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. One night, Starr goes to a party in Garden Heights and she meets her childhood best friend, Khalil. When he drives her home after the party, they are stopped by a policeman. Khalil is forced to get out of the car and the police officer shoots him, even though he was unarmed. Soon afterward, his murder becomes a national headline. He’s called a thug, a drug dealer, and a gangbanger. When it comes clear that the police have little interest in investigating it, protestors take to the streets and Starr’s neighborhood becomes a war zone. They all try to figure out what really happened that night and the only one who can answer that is Starr, who is struggling to reconcile the two versions of herself so she can speak up to clear Khalil’s name. What she says could ultimately decide the fate of this policeman – and more importantly whether or not he is charged with the murder of Khalil.

Literature is a powerful tool, because it’s not just about the story they’re reading. It’s about the message that the story conveys. Lord of The Flies is a great book for kids to read because it teaches them about humanity. The Catcher In The Rye shows kids that people their age throughout history (including their parents) felt the same sort of teenage angst they have, while battling against conformity. Other books like Night teach kids about history.

This book does one thing – teaches kids that police kill black kids indiscriminately. The cops are the antagonist in this story. Belmont is not a very diverse town, and this book is about the lone black girl at almost exclusively white school who is targeted with her black friend Khalil, presumably because they are black and the cops are racist. It’s meant to teach the few black children at Belmont High that they are more in danger during police stops than their white classmates. It teaches them that the police are there to kill them, not protect them. It teaches white kids in this predominantly white town that this is what it’s like to grow up being black in America.

In other words, Belmont High School is actively training kids to distrust the racist police in their town. No wonder police across the country have begun objecting to it.

Keep in mind, the kids reading this just finished 8th grade, and unless they’re in Lawrence it means they can’t drive yet. What does this book teach them about their own lives? Nothing. It teaches kids in this wealthy, segregated community that this is what it’s like to live in the neighborhoods they’ve never been to.

I’d never heard of this book before, but apparently it was published just last year, and is already a New York Times best seller. It’s also gotten critical acclaim from social justice warrior websites like Salon and The Guardian. Because, of course it did. It fits the right narrative. If you write a story that depicts cops as being racist then the media is gonna help you sell a lot of books.

The author says she was inspired to write it by the death of Mike Brown. A 300 pound man who had just robbed a convenience store and assaulted the clerk before trying to take the gun from a police officer who stopped him.

But then again Belmont has no shortage of wealthy white SJWs who have intentionally segregated themselves into an almost all white enclave, but yet preach the virtues of diversity and call other people racist. This book is right up their alley, as it will allow them to be more woke at their next Friday night book club meeting.

We support teachers at Turtleboy just like we support cops. But when they put anti-police propaganda like this on the summer reading list and force kids to consume it, that’s not something we can defend.

The bottom line is that books like this are not harmless. When we give kids the idea that cops are the enemy it makes them distrust the police because they are racist, when in reality most police officers do their job well. And because of the unhealthy anti-police climate which has been fostered by propaganda like this, cops like Michael Chesna are hesitant to pull the trigger on “unarmed” people like Manny Lopes, because they don’t want to me the next subject of an Angie Thomas book. And when that happens cops die. It’s disgusting that a public high school in Massachusetts would be feeding into this climate by putting this book on their list (when there are so many great books to choose from) right after the murder of Sean Gannon.

The principal of Belmont High School is Daniel Richards. If you’d like to share a well thought out email expressing in a respectful manner why you take issue with his school mandating this book for incoming freshmen, here’s his email: drichards@belmont.k12.ma.us

This book highlights the realities for minorities in America. Notice the word “realities”. Even though it’s not your reality, it’s many others’. Belmont consistently ranks one of the top performing schools in the state— of course they’re going to give their students a book that exposes the unfortunate reality. This is how they develop students that are educated, mindful and go on to change the world. I have family in law enforcement and respect their sacrifice. However, there are many corrupt police, and it’s easy to disagree when you’ve been entitled your whole life. Read a history book, learn about current events, learn a little psychology, too, and you’ll start to understand the profound difficulties people of color face, and how unjust society can be. If you’re mad at this book, it’s a personal problem, and you should educate yourself.

You’re part of the problem you blathering dope . waaaaah let’s teach people of color to play victim their whole lives. …the Irish were ostracized too but succeeded why is that? Oh because they are white will be your bleeding heart response .is that why black on black crime is out of control? I.e. Chicago, Baltimore or Detroit….fuck off

The book isn’t anti-cop, it’s an even handed account of the difficulty black people have responding to police violence. The cops aren’t the villains in this book. It’s the chorus of media (traditional and social, like these comments) who get whipped into a frenzy and make easy generalizations about the dead who play the bad guy in this case.

Read the book, its valuable background for people who are inundated with angry opinions whenever a questionable case of deadly force by police hits the media.

Bullshit. This is a sample of conclusions drawn from the book directly as posted from “gradesaver dot com”.

      “The Hate U Give

In Chapter 2, Starr says ‘Officer One-Fifteen yells at me, pointing the same gun he killed my friend with’. How is this quote significant? And what does this tell us about the racial profiling in her society?

this shows that since that officer one fifteen is white he will point a gun at any black person because of his racist view of people, meaning if youre black he assumes you are a thug or a gangster. its significant because it shows us how he thinks/feels about all black people and why he deserves to get punished for his actions

      No agenda, you little fuckhole?

Know what else isn’t mentioned? Khalil, after being pulled over having just left a party where shots were fired, yells at the cop for pulling him over, and when he’s patted down and told not to move, he opens the door to the car and gets shot.

Khalil happens to be black. Khalil would have been shot as well if he were white. But blacks are so fucking solipsistic that they will ignore that fact, ignore specific instructions, and get shot.

The book even explains the event, and black people even cherry pick what they want to hear.

So I know what’s going on in the book, I know the net effect, and it was as predictable as a fucking sunrise.

      Now fuck off.

AGREED!!! THIS BOOK IS NOT ANTI COP! Ive read this book…spoiler alert the main characters uncle is a cop! THis book is great and they’re making it into a movie. Nothing in this book promotes a “liberal agenda” I suggest the Turtleboy author of this article read it and make their own judgments before labeling it anti cop.

How can a school require a book that has a blatant English usage error in the title? A capital “U” does not substitute for “you”. Prince is dead, get over it.

Belmont High is full of Asians and we outnumber caucasians 9 to 1. Belmont is predominently Asian now and Asians do not like to associate with anyone that is not Asian. Asians do not care for American literature. We only like math. We won’t read such irrelevant nonsense. We will only study math.

Not to mention T.he H.ate U. Give. is an acronym for THUG deriving from Tupac Shakur’s THUG LIFE. The Hate U Give Little Infants Fucks Everyone.

I take issue with this statement: “It teaches kids in this wealthy, segregated community that this is what it’s like to live in the neighborhoods they’ve never been to”. As someone who lives in Belmont, this is kind of disgusting! Belmont has a great and fair police force, but the fact is that the majority of black kids who go to BHS don’t live in Belmont, they are able to go to BHS through the METCO program. THEY can relate to living in neighborhoods that many Belmont kids have never been to (think Brockton, Roxbury, etc) that actually do have to deal with the very real threat of violence and police brutality. Reading this book in school will give many of the sheltered kids in Belmont exposure to the very real world of racism and brutality that their black peers have to deal with. The book is not anti-police, it is anti-racism! I also think it is very unfair for the author to say that this book is harmful when she herself has no idea what it is like to be black in Belmont, where kids throw around racial slurs willy-nilly without understanding the effect. You trash Belmont for lacking diversity, and then you trash Belmont for trying to do something to address this lack of diversity. It is alot easier and more practical for the school district to assign an informative book for homework than it is for them to somehow upheave the entire system of defacto segregation that has century-long roots in MA. Call me a SJW, call me whatever, but this is me exercising my free speech!

    • Kim Un Jong
      August 1, 2018 at 4:40 pm

How sweet. Are they told to read about books on gang violence, you know the stuff that kills way more minorities than a police force 1,000 times the size would?

    • Screw PC

“THEY can relate to living in neighborhoods that many Belmont kids have never been to (think Brockton, Roxbury, etc) that actually do have to deal with the very real threat of violence and police brutality.”

“…she herself has no idea what it is like to be black in Belmont, where kids throw around racial slurs willy-nilly without understanding the effect.”

You seem to know an awful lot for someone who has no fucking idea what she’s talking about.

Have you seen “police brutality”? Do you hang out with kids who use racial slurs “willy-nilly”? First off, if you use the phrase “willy nilly” at any time, you have no clue what is on the mind of anybody under 60.

You’re exactly the problem. You’re in a sheltered rich little insular enclave safely tucked away from minorities. Armenians are also minorities, and Belmont is full of them. They could pass for Hispanic, some even for black. Why don’t the cops “brutalize” them? Maybe because they fucking behave themselves.

Dylan Root is the asshole who shot up a bunch of black people at a church. Notice he wasn’t shot. That’s because he didn’t resist arrest and start shooting at cops.

This bullshit book was inspired by the shooting of Mike Brown. There is footage of Mike Brown robbing a convenience store and assaulting the clerk right before the confrontation with Officer Wilson. Forensic evidence proved that the so-called witnesses were lying about the events surrounding the shooting, but there were no apologies. Meanwhile, Wilson is hiding out somewhere from the mobs of black people spurred on to destroy him based on lies.

Criminals love moonbats like you who run with premises like “police brutality”, talking like you know what’s happening while you sit on your sun porch on a Concord Avenue side street sipping tea while your cat naps in the sun. You have no idea what goes on between cops and criminals because you’re nowhere near it. There’s way too many uninformed assholes just like you, you smug little shit. Support from pusillanimous moonbats like you is what empowers scum to shoot policemen.

You can talk all you want, and in your case, that’s a problem, since there are multitudes of Democrat fucknuts who share your bullshit uninformed sentiments, and there are tons of violent wastes of oxygen who get a hard on hearing you talk about how the cops are mean to them.

Fuck off our page, you stupid cunt.

Charlie Baker has commented but done nothing. Residents have called for ethics and IG and DA investigations.
