Who makes better hot dogs? Coney Island or Hot Dog Annie’s? GFQ. We tossed that question up on the Facebook machine and got 5 million responses. Tensions were high. Clearly we had to settle this with a good ol’ fashioned dog-off.

First we went to Hot Dog Annie’s. The biggest downside to Annie’s is the fact that it’s in Leicester. Some towns have a useful purpose. Millbury is on the highway and it leads to other useful places, like Providence. But Leicester? That’s the gateway to Spencer. Going into Leicester involves driving behind some moron on Route 9 and then finding an even bigger moron to drive behind on the way home.

Anyway, when you finally get there you’re basically in the middle of nowhere.

11082637_1562703100679634_3181797781332433287_n

The seating is all outside too:

10626822_1562703114012966_5588411210583282930_n

Inside is basically a shack, and every time I go inside there in the summer I feel bad for the poor girls working behind the counter. Because on top of the fact that there’s obviously no AC, it’s small and there’s a piping hot grill in front of them:

11051932_1562703117346299_4454906169075534981_n

Anyway, I get my dogs the only respectable way you can – with mustard and relish. Only a savage puts ketchup on a hot dog. A lot of people getting the chili dog here, but we’re trying to compare them to Coney Island dogs so we have to get the same crap on our dogs at both places.

11081295_1562703120679632_643712445208804443_n

A major difference between the two places are the buns. Annie’s grills the buns:

11081490_1562702984012979_8948825673234186439_n

And one of the things that sucks about both places is……where’s the beef??

It’s like the Regatta of hot dogs. Is it really that hard to find a slightly bigger hot dog? Is that gonna tear into their profit margins or something? Come on Annie, you’re better than that.

After smashing down those twins it was time to go down to Southbridge St for a couple Coney Island dogs. First of all, how would you get from Annie’s to Coney Island? That’s what I mean by Leicester being a terrible town to travel to. You go out there and then you literally have to retrace your steps to go anywhere else except Whitco. Pain in the ass of a drive right there.

Eventually we ended up down on Southbridge St:

10982445_1562702807346330_8806981269227994948_n

One of the cool things about Coney Island of course is the classic, authentic Worcester feel inside.

11091527_1562702980679646_5507873780402256219_n

Coney Island is famous for it’s wooden benches with shit carved into it.

Shannon and Jeff 4-eva. I’m sure that worked out. After all, on Southbridge Street carving your names into a wooden bench is what they call a “commitment ceremony.”

Another difference between the two is the fact that they serve booze. Also, it’s a great place to read the paper, if you’re a middle-aged grizzled dude who still reads the paper.

10626822_1562702974012980_9018733304934704151_n

Coney Island is basically a hot dog factor.

11088402_1562702770679667_5276978946652882205_n

A major difference between the dogs at Coney Island and Annie’s, is that they put the mustard on the side of the bun, so you don’t even notice it’s there at first.

Yea, sorry Coney Island, I like my dogs SMOTHERED in cheap yellow mustard. And like I said before, they don’t toast the buns at Coney Island

11130211_1562702800679664_6549182057564033587_n

For whatever reason I went into this place under the impression that there dogs had more beef to them. I dunno, you tell me which has more girth? Coney Island

11081419_1562702810679663_931715243876170400_n

or Hot Dog Annie’s

11115749_1562703030679641_4388100659495001989_n

Looks like a tie to me.

I dunno, I like both these places, but you really need to order like six or seven of them to feel like you’re a real American. I feel like if one of these places invested in bigger dogs they could completely drive the other one out of business. And how much would that really cost? What do they pay, 12 cents per unit? Seems like a worthy investment.

So which one is better? Let’s look at the pros and cons of each:

Hot Dog Annie’s. Pros: You get to eat outside, the buns are toasted and buttered, they have superior mustard to dog ratio, and you’re in an isolated, quiet area. Cons: You gotta drive to Leicester, if the weather’s not great you have to eat in your car like a loser, and you could be attacked by a bear.

Coney Island. Pros: You get to eat in a controlled environment, you can get drunk, and you can declare your love for the stripper you just met at Hurricane Betty’s by carving your names into the seats. Cons: There’s no outdoor seating, the buns aren’t toasted, the mustard is hidden, and the Kelley Square day shift vagrant might hassle you on the way out.

At the end of the day I gotta go with Hot Dog Annie’s. It’s all about the buns and the mustard. Am I right or am I right?

Coney Island had a health code violation over an employee’s personal hygiene.
For a place to get points off for a worker with poor personal hygiene, they reeaaallly have to not give a fuck.
The BOH can shut you down; The one day you’d want to scurry the stinky guy out the back door is the day the health department inspector shows up.
You know how people always secretly worry that the server or someone in the kitchen is doing something disgusting with your food? Coney Island is the only restaurant in the city with a board of health certified dirty person on the payroll, so you probably don’t have to wonder at all about something like that happening. That’s practically a guarantee from the BOH that something gross has already happened to your food, regardless of you being a shitty rude customer.
I would just as soon burn my tounge right off with a dirty main south heroin cook spoon than eat at Coney Island.
    HDA all the way.

The famous barbecue sauce at hot dog Annies is an extra charge ($.35 per dog) now and it doesn’t hardly have any onions in it.
They also don’t use Kayem dogs anymore and when you say where’s the beef, you know you made it to hot dog Annie’s

I’m starting my own hot dog truck. It’s going to called “Felony Dogs – it’s a crime not to try one. Home of the 12″ dogs where size DOES matter!”

The size of the hot dog is perfect at both places! Barbeque dog at Annie’s, coney dog at Coney island. No comparison!

Nice….I’ve been to both places, HDA’s quite a bit and Coney Island a couple of times.

Both places are dirty and disgusting. I recall standing at the counter in HDA’s with a freind one day, I was leaning on the counter and noticed that I was slowly sliding backwards. It was the grease on the floor !

At Coney Island, the place is dark for a reason, so you can’t see the dirt and grime. Those booths are certainly iconic, but they haven’t washed them down in over 50 years. I did like the side of baked beans there (give you ‘the wind’ something fierce).

You can’t beat the signature barbecue dogs at HDA’s though, mixed heavily with saute’d onions. Plus they use New England style buns and they are toasted, at Coney island they use frankfurter buns like any other New York wanna be joint.

Plenty of parking at HDA’s, sometimes you can’t find a space near Coney Island.
You don’t need to lock your car or even roll up the windows at HDA’s.

I guess it depends on where you are and which place is closer. Either one could kill you with salmonella or at the very least give you a nasty case of the shits.

    April 3, 2015 at 6:28 am

    I forgot to add:

at HDA’s there is always the possiblity of catching Hepatitis or Salmonella. Seriously, look at the 3rd picture of HDA’s server making dogs. That counter and serving area is NASTY!

  • M Dub
    April 3, 2015 at 6:23 am

HDA’s really???? I lost all respect for you Turtleboy. I think we as a city should suspend your Worcester Pass for a few weeks so you can really think your decision over.

    HDA’s = Low Class!
Doshnoozzles servers with shit attitudes, shit dogs served out of uncovered unheated bins on a dirty counter, a building thats one step up from a Garbage Shed, dirty as parking lot/dining area, broken down picnic tables etc…..

    Coney = High Class!
Full Bar, Awesome service wih a smile, great sauce, great dogs, served in a beautiful, historic building in Downtown Worcester (YOUR TOWN)

No ones going to point out that Hot Dog Annie’s uses the “New England style” hot dog rolls? Have some pride you savages.

What a crock who does this study anyway a horrible comparison like someone stated above you have to do their signature dogs and when you do that they don’t compare they are both delicious it their own right and that’s it I think the only moron in the car on rt 9 that day was you buddy next time why don’t you go compare Arby’s to Burger King and stay on Your level geepahs

Having been to Hot Dog Annie’s many times I can’t help but think the reviewer never went there. Hot Dog Annies doesn’t have chili dogs and the buns are not buttered. By the way, The Dogfather hot dog truck beats Both Coney Island and Hot Dog Annies hands down!!

Coney island wins just for being the closest place to the registry that u can get a beer. B57- estimated wait time 3hours and 42 minutes. Yeah ok see u in 14 beers and 30 hot dogs “up”

While we’re at it, and I know it’s a truck, but what about the dogfather? Those have to be the best dogs in worcester.

    • BobnMic
      April 4, 2015 at 4:45 pm

RJ those ARE good dogs. Dogfather uses (what he told me) an award winning chili on his dogs if you order a chili dog. It’s right down the street from where I live and I go to his eminence every Red Sox opening day! I’ll see him next week.

How about some love for Ronnies in Charlton? Hot dogs and ice cream in one sitting!

[You missed that Hot Dog Annies has the added benefit of being a short trip to the end of the Worcester airport runway.]

I used to live in Leicester so I’m a little biased, but hot dog Annie’s is the only way to go. I like going to Coney Island if I’m in the area and have nothing better to do, but one time I asked for bbq sauce on my hot dog because, hey, it’s good. They put some weird meat paste on it instead. One of the 6 worst things I’ve ever tasted and one of the 4 most disgusting things I’ve had in my mouth. Never been back.

  • Fattydaddy
    April 2, 2015 at 8:07 pm

Your opinion; but it’s wrong, first of all you took the picture of Coney with a Hoodie of roll around it compared to Annie’s in which the roll is trimmed back to the dog. I commented Annie’s are the size of a breakfast sausage on FB, but after eating at Bradishes in Grafton they got’em both beat. I like you TB but, maybe you’re not old enough to remember the Old Annie’s or possibly Bob the Hot Dog Man in West Boylston.

We’re talking about hot dogs right? It’s a fuckin hot dog. Don’t get me wrong, I love them. But one guys processed meat, French’s yellow mustard and diced onions are the same as the next guys… been to both. I like both. It’s a fucking hot dog.

I’m not American enough, because I don’t like hot dogs. I just don’t go in for the rich flavor of lips and assholes.

But, I personally prefer the burgers at Annie’s over Coney. But Coney has the better atmosphere and is titty bar adjacent. So it’s basically a wash.

The better dog can be found at Bradishes in grafton. Foot long dogs toasted buttered bun. Onion rings to die for. Con: only open in the summer

Well TB, it does not happen often but I disagree. I also have to admit that I am a savage. I like my ketchup & onions.

Hot Dog Annie’s was great once upon a time.

I will still proudly, I will still wear my TB tee.

I don’t live in Mass, so you have me at “I can get drunk there.” Really the only time I eat hot dogs is when I’m drunk watching sports.

What I want to know is why is this all about pizza and hot dogs? Can’t a brother get some hamhocks and collard greens up in here?

    Racist…

Coney island all day. Or Hot Dog Annie in the 70’s-80’s? The new Annies owners fucked that place up. You would never ever order a cheese burger there back then out of fear of one of those tough chick’s to jump the counter and kick your ass. I remember lines half way out the lot. But not now. Coney Island reins supreme!

Being in the middle of nowhere compared to the infestation of Worcester is a “pro”, not a “con”.
