Boone, Petty Caved On Cops At North High Because We Made Them, Not Because They Wanted To

TelegramAfter criticism of the district increased this weekend — including a harsh statement from city councilor-at-large and mayoral hopeful Michael T. Gaffney — Mayor Joseph M. Petty held a closed-door meeting Monday with police and school officials.

He said a school liaison officer who was already at the school during arrival and dismissal times will now be assigned there full time. In addition, the city will add a plainclothes police officer to the building part time, he said.

“Those two police officers will develop their own relationships within the school with the students,” he said.

Mr. Petty said the school also plans to provide the police station with a real-time video feed from inside and outside the school. He said the logistics of that plan are still being worked out.

Does the Turtleboy Sports Revolution work, or does the Turtleboy Sports Revolution work? You can’t even attempt to deny the influence at this point. I mean, Melinda Boone and Joe Petty couldn’t have made it more clear that they had ZERO intention of putting a police officer in North High during the school day. Then we literally break the story that another Vice Principal was assaulted by a student, AFTER the administration tried to cover it up. Then everyone and their mother reads the story, and BOOM – cops are now roaming the halls at North High.

You did this people, not us. We wrote the blogs but you shared them. You commented on them. You made it undeniably clear to the city’s leaders that we’re not putting up with their bullshit shenanigans any longer. This city belongs to the residents, not Melinda Boone and Joe Petty.

I wanna give a shoutout to freshman City Councillor Michael Gaffney too. I know him and several other city councillors ride the turtle, but he’s the first elected official that took action on this. He’s running for mayor in November and saw a clear lack in leadership from Petty on this one.

A lot of people are saying that his letter calling out administration for their weak sauce “plan” was politically motivated. One of them is District 3 City Councilor George Russell, who had this to say:

“You don’t necessarily play politics with an issue so important, quite frankly, as the safety of the kids in the school system.”

First of all, welcome to politics GEORGE. That’s how the game is played. How butthurt are you that Gaffney beat you to the punch? Both Gaffney and former teacher Gary Vecchio wrote letters to city administration to let them know that the charade was over. If they didn’t do that then Turtleboy is still the only one blogging about it.

Where were you George-ee boy? Oh yea, no where. You had the same opportunity to do something about it that he did but instead you twiddled your thumbs and watched the fireworks from the friendly confines of District 3. Come on man. That’s a bad look. You think Paul Clancy would’ve done that? We haven’t announced our official endorsements yet, but let’s just Gaffney’s off to a good start.

The funny part about this is that Petty had no intention to do this until he got the Vecchio/Gaffney letters. How do we know this? Our “deep throat” in the school department gave us this email, sent by Petty two days ago to Gary Vecchio:

Hi Gary, thanks for your email and concern for the students and faculty at North High School. I can assure you that the safety for our students and faculty/staff will not allowed to be compromised. The school committee along with the Superintendent takes this matter very seriously.   We have have had numerous discussions and meetings addressing the issues impacting North High. I have heard from Dianna Biancheria and others regarding safety in the school and sharing concerns by residents that live in the vicinity of the school.  I will continue with another meeting this week with the Superintendent, members of her administration, the City Manager, the Worcester Police Department and other city departments as we deem necessary. The purpose of this meeting will be to review strategy to date and to determine if any adjustments to our plan need to be made.

To date, the Superintendent has presented her plan regarding North High School, has met with the parents (there will be many more meetings with parents), the faculty (meeting last week and another meeting is scheduled for tomorrow).  And as the Superintendent has stated, discipline has been handed out to the students involved in the recent altercations.

I agree with you that the majority of the students are good kids.  It should also be noted that because of the increased scrutiny at the school, every time there is an incident  at the school it will highlighted.

Let me sum up that email for you.

  • We’re gonna have a shitload of meetings, because we don’t have nearly enough meetings, and come up with some more fun “plans” none of which will involve a police officer in the school.
  • We’ve disciplined these kids now that Turtleboy, followed by the rest of Worcester’s media, exposed all of our manipulated cover ups.
  • Turtleboy made everyone freak out over this, and it’s really not THAT big of a deal. Damn you Turtleboy!!

See, that’s why I don’t run for office. I don’t have the ability to bullshit like Petty just did in that email.

Here’s another question – where the hell is principal Lisa Dyer? She’s rather new to the job there and was specifically brought in because North High was a Level 3 school in 2013, which means it is in the bottom 20 percent of schools statewide.

And of course we know that those rankings mean absolutely nothing. All they do is give overpaid six figure dooshnozzles jobs. They take a bunch of test scores, toss a few graphs together, and tell you how much test scores need to magically improve by to get to the next level. GO!!! That’s literally all it is.

And wouldn’t you know it? Schools where lots of kids grow up in poverty don’t rank very well on these levels. Gee, I wonder why that is? Well educational “reformers” will tell you that it’s because, a) the principals suck, and/or b) the staff sucks. So if you want federal funding (thanks Obama) you have to replace one or the other. Option A is a lot easier.

Well when Dyer first took the job, a reporter from Worcester magazine named Janice Harvey, who moonlights as an ELA teacher at North High, wrote what has almost become a prophetic article about what would be needed form Dyer:

Principal Dyer will need the backbone to hold them accountable and the heart to understand their plight. She’ll need to value the opinions of her faculty and listen to their concerns with an open mind, trusting that we are very good at what we do. She’ll need a steely spine to stand tall against bad decisions made by those who know little about the student body and even less about education.

Let’s see. Backbone to hold students accountable? Not so much. Valuing the opinions of the faculty? LOL, good one. A “steely spine to stand tall against bad decisions made by those who know little about the student body and even less about education” (ahem…Dr. Boone)? YYYYYEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAA. Throughout all this media drama about this one high school I have not heard from the principal of the building ONCE. I couldn’t even pick her out of a lineup.

With leaders like that it’s no wonder it takes the Turtleboy Sports Revolution in order to get things done around there.

Gaffney is the man. He’s got my vote. He’s got his own $ and doesn’t play the game.

Janice Harvey is a blessing for any student to have! She truly cares about the kids! My vote is Turtleboy takes over as principal and Ms. Harvey takes on as vice principal!
