Taunton GazetteRehoboth police finally took custody of a suspect they’ve been searching for since December. Gilberto Oliveira-Mendes, 21, of Taunton, has been held without bail as a fugitive from justice in Rhode Island since he was arrested in Providence on Feb. 26. Police say he fled from a Route 44 traffic stop in Rehoboth and led police on a two-state high-speed car chase in a U-Haul truck.

Rehoboth police say Oliveira-Mendes also abandoned a suitcase “full of a large quantity of narcotics, including over 2 kilos of suspected heroin, approximately 500 grams of suspected cocaine, over 3 pounds of suspected marijuana, and approximately 300 suspected oxycodone pills” on Dec. 17, 2014.

Oliveira-Mendes was ordered held on $25,000 cash bail during his arraignment at Taunton District Court on Monday afternoon, on charges of trafficking cocaine, trafficking heroin, morphine or opium and distribution of a Class D drug. Judge Michael Vitali set a status review hearing for the case to take place on Wednesday.

Rehoboth police said Oliveira-Mendes was arrested in Providence around 4 p.m. on Feb. 26 fleeing from Rehoboth Police Officer Craig Forget. Forget attempted to stop the Oliveira-Mendes as he drove a U-Haul moving truck for “a minor motor vehicle infraction” on Winthrop Street (Route 44).

“When Officer Forget activated his emergency lights Oliveira-Mendes pulled the vehicle over and when Officer Forget approached the vehicle it took off in an erratic manner traveling west on Route 44 towards Seekonk,” police wrote in a press release.

Police said Forget pursued the vehicle, but the suspect “continued to operate in an erratic manner and traveled at speeds near 70 mph.”

The vehicle passed through Seekonk, across the state line into East Providence and onto Route 195 westbound toward Providence. Police said Oliveira-Mendes took the South Main Street exit, but eventually abandoned the vehicle in the road and ran off.

“After a lengthy foot pursuit Officer Forget was able to take custody of Oliveira-Mendes in the area of Peck Street in Providence,” police said.

Rhode Island State Police, Providence and East Providence police departments assisted in the chase and capture.

“After his apprehension Rehoboth Police Lt. James Trombetta identified him as Oliveira-Mendes who he recognized as the suspect wanted by Rehoboth police for drug trafficking and drug distribution charges stemming from (Dec. 17, 2014) incident on County Street,” police said.

According to police, Oliveira-Mendes ran from police in December at the scene of a motor vehicle accident he was involved in on County Street. Oliveira-Mendes allegedly fled the accident scene carrying a large suitcase, which police say he later abandoned in the woods near the crash site. Within the suitcase, police discovered a huge cache of narcotics.

Despite a “multi-agency search” of the area, Oliveira-Mendes was not located and remained at-large. An arrest warrant was issued, and police say he had been eluding capture, before Thursday’s attempted traffic stop.

Now Gilberto, I can tell right away that you are an enterprising young man with a bright future ahead of you. However, when you do get out of jail in 15 years, let’s go over a few tips for the next time you get caught with hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of coke, heroin, and pills.

1. Unless you’re Hunter S. Thompson in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, don’t keep all your shit in a suitcase. It’s tacky and even the dumbest cop in the history of earth will find it in about 3 seconds. Ever hear of a false trunk compartment?

2. When running from police on foot, carrying a 50-pound suitcase might weigh you down a little. Simple physics here Gilly, ditch that suitcase early, they are gonna find it anyway.

3. Get yourself a nice rental car to run from the police in. Can’t the drug cartel at least spring for a Nissan Maxima?? Engaging in a high-speed chase with police while driving a uhaul van is like being a New York Jets fan. After the point where you’ve been dumb enough to make the decision in the first place, the rest is just one long embarrassing ride of misery, sorrow, and inevitability, ending in your own disgrace and public humiliation.

4. When you’re a fugitive from justice, obey all traffic laws and stay out of your hometown. The hits just keep coming Buckaroo. Getting pulled over two streets away from where you’re from, when you’re the most wanted man in town makes me wonder if there’s any brain at all underneath those cornrows.

Good luck in the pen Gil, see ya in 15-20.

A poorly written article by a timid man who didn’t even take the time to evaluate the story with enough precision to get the facts straight. Oh and he’s out on bail. We all know you wouldn’t have the balls to read this to the man’s face.

Leave it to a Brockton resident to critique a drug heist, and establish rules for evading police. Admit it BTB, you’re speaking from first hand knowledge, aren’t you?

A heist implies holding someone or some place up to steal their shit…

I thought most U-haul;s are limited to 70 mph. 70 is hardly a “high speed chase”.

10-15 years, really? In the peoples state of MA? Didn’t you see TB’s story on the couple with six kids dealing heroin. They were caught 2 years before. This guy will get community service picking up trash at North High.
