This might be the dumbest thing we’ve ever heard:

A plan by the state to establish a colony of venomous timber rattlesnakes on an off-limits island in Massachusetts’ largest body of water has some rattled by visions of dangerous serpents slithering through the surrounding woods, attacking hikers, fishermen and hunters.

Those are completely irrational fears based on the public’s aversion to snakes, said Tom French of the state Division of Fisheries and Wildlife, who’s directing the project at the 39-square mile Quabbin Reservoir and representing the state at a public meeting Tuesday to address the concerns.

French said he’s received several emails and phone calls from worried residents who fear the snakes will escape the island.

“People are afraid that we’re going to put snakes in a place of public use and that they are going to breed like rabbits and spread over the countryside and kill everybody,” he said.

There are only about 200 of the endangered snakes indigenous to Massachusetts left in five scattered pockets from greater Boston to the Berkshires, French said. Loss of habitat and human-caused deaths means they could disappear altogether, which is why the Quabbin project is so critical.

The plan to establish the snakes on Mount Zion — at more than 1,400 acres, the largest island in the reservoir — has been in the works for several years. A handful of snakes will be raised at Roger Williams Park Zoo in Providence, Rhode Island, and placed on the island in a couple more years when they are mature enough to survive in the wild.

The public’s concerns stem from the fact that rattlesnakes can swim and the island is connected to the mainland by a pair of narrow causeways, French said.

There is no plan to deny public access to the Quabbin, and concerns that snakes will leave the island and threaten humans are unfounded, French said.

Seriously, why are human beings obsessed with keeping alive the 1% of animals that can kill us no problem. What is the need for this? We did this last summer when all those ding dongs tries to save the idiot shark who thought it would be a smart idea to leave the water and go sun tanning on the beach. This is nature. It’s us vs. them. This is not the Lion King where certain species of animals form alliances. It’s us against the world. If rattle snakes go extinct, then they go extinct. Wasn’t meant to be. Shit happens when you can’t survive in the wild. It’s called Darwinism. Finding ways for animals to survive when they can’t is the exact opposite of letting nature take its course.

Oh yea, and I love how these people at the Division of Fisheries and Wildlife are trying to assure people that the snakes are gonna be happy on their island. But oh yea, they can also swim. I’m sure they’ll never leave though. Until they kill off all the delicious mice and chipmunks and get a little curious. Would you wanna spend your entire life on some island eating the same shit over and over again? What if you possessed the power to leave? You’re honestly telling me a snake has the ability to leave the island and it’s NEVER gonna give it a shot? LOL. Come one now.

The bottom line is this serves no legitimate purpose for human beings who live anywhere near the Quabbin Reservoir. Will it lead to a rattle snake killing someone’s dog someday? Maybe, maybe not. But a great way to make sure that never happens is to not bring a bunch of rattle snakes to the Quabbin Reservoir. Boom. Problem solved.

I have seen several rattle snakes near the cemetery in Quincy over the years and I have never heard of anyone getting bite by one of them so I think the people are just getting their panties in a bunch over nothing. If you don’t bother them they won’t bother you. rattle snakes are just as afraid as we are of them so not to worry. you have more chance of being attacked by a wild dog than a rattlesnake.

there are probably a lot of these bleeding heart morons who would opt to keep the dinosaurs alive, but I have a
better idea, bring 1/3 to the white house, 1/3 to congress, and the other third to Chicago.
    end of story !!!

Nevermind that these bastards can swim… All its gonna take is a hawk or eagle to relocate a pair of of these snakes to the mainland and boom were all gonna have poisonous snakes in our back yards.

How these environmental idiots not think that this is a real possibility is beyond my comprehension.

When I think of Darwinism, which I truly believe in, I think of two or more species competing for the same food source and habitat. I feel snakes and other reptiles have pretty much led the planet in terms of evolution and “survival-of-the-fittest”, evidenced by the millions of years they’ve been here! Their numbers have only recently become an issue when we as humans have directly influenced them! How pathetic would it be if we had a direct connection to the extinction of an entire species?? I understand Timber Rattlesnakes are venomous and dangerous, but if it was a cute and fuzzy little mammal, the majority of people would fight for saving them. I would go out on a limb and say a person’s chance of getting bitten by an aggressive dog is far greater than a Timber Rattler on a “remote island”!!

If they are raising snakes at Roger Williams Park Zoo why not just let them out there? Just open the cages. Plenty of animals right in the zoo they can munch on. Save some money and time.

I think this is a great idea. Where else to reintroduce a rare and endangered species, which is exclusive to this area of the country, than a remote uninhabited island with limited human access? Timber Rattlesnakes are not going to actively hunt humans or pets!!! I think people have gotten a little paranoid…this isn’t like the stupid movie Anaconda! And this is nothing like the introduction and release (by lazy pet owners)of the non-indigenous species of the Burmese Python into the Everglades and surrounding areas! Large constrictors can and will hunt and consume medium-sized mammals (ie: cats, dogs).

I realize people in this country, if not the world, fear and have intense phobias of snakes more than any other animal. However, we can’t just pick and choose which animals we want to survive, and which ones we decide to force into extinction!! I am by no means a “tree hugger”, but what’s right is right!

Ok, so I figured they were going for a statewide snake roundup relocation program. Nope, apparently there aren’t enough snakes in the commonwealth, Somebody shoulda checked Beacon Hill first. I’m guessing the Providence snakes will kick ass on the stupid Quabbin snakes and establish a snake la cosa nostra.
Seriously though, how long will it be before a leaky old rowboat full of Colrainians beaches on Snake Island hoping to fetch some new pets? Sounds like the makings of a new horror flick

I’m wondering why the built this giant causeway to get to an island that the public has no access to. How often do “officials” need to go to this uninhabited island that nobody else can go to? Couldn’t they just take a boat?

  • February 23, 2016 at 9:52 am

if they are so concerned about saving nature let them all turn in their car keys get rid of their fossil fuel heat give up their buss passes and stop flying from one conference to another come back in five years and then make that proposal. if they must save something save our cute cuddly eastern cotton tail bunny. We have all seen the effects of saving things and if you haven’t look around at the patches of dead trees and the wetlands that weren’t there when you were growing up ,yes we saved the beaver and look what damage it has done i’m with turtle boy let nature take its course

Saddened by TB. You really think that it’s Darwinism to let rattlesnakes become extinct? Is it not our responsibility as humans to steward endangers species? If this ” it wasn’t meant to be” mind thought becomes the norm Turtleboy Jr. Will only be able to read about rattlesnakes in a book. Shame on you. Yes, I’m a proud tree hugger.

Snakes are cool. Leave them be.

Look at the bright side. Maybe there’s a chance Old Balls will head on up to Quabbin to call out the snakes for poisoning and eating his relative, the red eyed rat. Resulting in OB being bitten himself.

“Snakes are cool. Leave them be.” – True, leave the rattlesnakes to be…TO DIE!

Bunch of moonbats…don’t interfere with nature…unless it is to interfere by breeding poisonous snakes.

Let the snakes live! They would be doing fine in the woods if it wasn’t for a bunch of asshats called humans that were afraid of them and too stupid to leave them alone. The snakes will leave most people alone, except for the idiot that tries to corner them and gets themselves bit, and that is just a little Darwinism in action. Stop being a wimp Turtle and stick up for your fellow reptiles!

Not only is this a stupid idea, but how much taxpayer money is being used…oh never mind, this is Massachusetts. DFW will probably appoint a Commissioner of Poisonous Snakes to head up the project.
