Brockton High Alumni Holding Reunion For Black People Only

With race relations as tenuous as they currently are in this country and the racial divide widening every day, you have to question the motives behind organizer Gwen Nauls inviting only African-American alumni to a Brockton High School reunion. Despite Brockton having a very large African-American population, some have questioned if arranging such an event which specifically excludes other races could be counter-productive in terms of unification.  Others speculate what kind of repercussions would be incurred if African-Americans themselves were excluded from a similar event.

According to the Enterprise – The Sixth annual Black Brockton High School Alumni Reunion open to alumni from the classes of the 1970s and 80s and their friends will be held this Friday from 7pm until midnight at Generations in Avon.

The event began as a way to “reengage black alumni by using the activism cultivated during their high school years to make a difference and be effective and positive contributors to their communities as adults,” described organizer Gwen Nauls via email.

Miles Jackson, Class of 1974,  and DJ Ol’ School will provide an array of music from the 1970s and 1980s, including hits by the legendary singer James Brown.  The evening will also include a slide show feature high school photographs.

There will be a tribute to Councilors-at-large Shaynah Barnes and Moises Rodrigues: Barnes is the first African-American woman to serve on the City Council and Rodrigues is the first Cape Verdean to serve on the City Council.

Community organizers John Williams, Ollie Spears, Mayoral candidate  Jacob Tagger, and Krystal Love will also be recognized for their contributions as well.

Past event honorees have included local historian Willie Wilson for documenting black history in Brockton; Nauls for her work with Brockton youth, and Gene Marrow, the first  African-American principal of  Brockton High School.

Tickets are $50 and must be purchased in advance.

For tickets or more information, call Viki Brown at 802- 829-7601.

Honest question I have always wanted to ask about events like these…If you married a cracker do you have to leave her home or does she get to attend as black by injection ??

This does not make sense. So whats next… no jews or muslims allowed? I remember a guy back in the 1940s who only wanted blonde haired blue eyed white christians. So was he right after all? Any school event should be open to all who attended.

If a white only reunion were held the BLM Isis clone would be apoplectic.

Just hold the all inclusive class reunion on the same night. And that is how you get away with no blacks at your reunion.

They have every right to have an all black reunion. Just as white people have every right to do the same. They do, don’t they? Don’t they? Hey, maybe they don’t. Let’s look into this.

Eh, if people want to have a private gathering on their own time at their own expense, no big deal. Invite whoever you want, exclude whoever you want. If it was school sanctioned or funded, different story, but that means nobody gets to complain if someone wanted to have a white-only, Asian-only, men-only, women-only, gay-only or straight-only party, for whatever reason. Do what you want on your own time.

That would be the case if it were a private party. However, this is a high school reunion that specifically excludes people because of their race. Why don’t you announce that you’re organizing a high school alumni event, and only white people are invited. Let me know how that works out for you.

I would have any problem if someone wanted to have a white-only event. If anyone else does, and they’re ok with the black only event, that makes them a hypocrite, but I don’t control what other people think and I’m not responsible for people following basic logic (thankfully). That said, it doesn’t say that it’s an officially sanctioned event. It says it’s being organized by this Gwen Nauls chick and if she wanted to have a party and only invite amputees between 5’2″ and 5’4″, I wouldn’t care. Like I said, as long as it isn’t an official event (through organization or funding), it doesn’t matter.

First sentence should be “I wouldn’t have any problem if…” I think it’s clear in context, but just to be sure
