Brockton EnterpriseDozens of students walked out of Brockton High during the school day Thursday to protest a system of discipline using demerits they say is unfair.

More than 50 students left the Forest Avenue school at 10:58 a.m. to gather at the adjacent Marciano Stadium football field.

About an hour later, chanting “change our system,” the group began to march and run toward the school.

In a Youtube video posted on Wednesday, Bradley Souffant, one of the protest’s organizers, called others to join in to the movement he referred to as “Revolutionary Fist.”

“Don’t fear what will happen,” he said. “There is strength in numbers.”

Promising peaceful protest, he said, “We will not tolerate anybody acting up.”

Students who violate Brockton High’s rules accrue demerits that can lead to detention and suspension.

Demerits are assigned for everything from being tardy and cutting classes to cheating and defacing school property. Students who maintain good behavior can “buy back” demerits through the system.

Souffant and others have maintained since January that punishment is levied differently at the 4,000-plus student school if you have black or brown skin.

Many, including Souffant, took their case to the School Committee on March 17, asking for dialogue and more school psychologists and counselors, which they said teens direly need.

At the time, Souffant said, “Not everyone who breaks the rules is obstinate and disorderly. Sometimes it’s a way of crying out for help.”

Student David O’Marde on Thursday said race wasn’t the focus of the school event.

“We asserted that this is a Brockton community issue, a youth issue and a human rights issue,” he said.

Racism is prevalent in Brockton High, he said: “However, we did not speak on it today.”

Rather, he said, students sought to show that the demerit system doesn’t remedy bad behavior, or go to the root of it – it just offers a quick solution to intervention and discipline.

At the March meeting, students said some teachers give out demerits for tardiness if you are standing right next to your desk. Especially if you are black, they said.

A new set of state regulations called Chapter 222 imposed last July 1 provides guidelines for student discipline, encouraging alternatives so out-of-school suspensions are a last resort.

District officials have also hired Harvard University Researcher Ronald Ferguson to conduct surveys of students and staff to learn how the school community can help its students to thrive.

Resident Ollie Jay Spears said he attended the Thursday event to ensure students would be safe.

“Is it right to walk out in protest? No,” Spears said. “But something is obviously going on, and the community has to listen. I support them, either way.”

Toni Saunders, an educational consultant who works with the group, said the event was a success.

“I was very proud of them for standing their ground and staying focused on making change happen,” she said.

Before we go any further, I think we all need to address this first:

A catholic priest and a ginger with a guitar leading a group of 50 kids who think rules are dumb. Welcome to Brockton, Massachustts.

Remember a couple weeks back when we wrote our blog about the 21 towns and cities in Massachusetts that are dumpier than Worcester? Yea, Brockton was #6 on that list, and quite frankly, that was pretty generous. This is a perfect example of why Worcester is a better place to live than Brockton. This wouldn’t happen in Worcester because Worcester kids aren’t this dumb.

Where do I start? How bout the fact that this was organized and sanctioned by adults like Toni Saunders who are NOT teachers. Brockton High School is bigger than Paxton. It’s literally a school full of teenagers from one of the poorest cities in America. Anyone who doesn’t think a school like this should be as strict as possible is a moron. Plain and simple.

A lot of these kids come from shitty homes where there’s no discipline whatsoever. They need rules and consistency, and apparently Brockton High School is attempting to do that with their demerit system. And everything was working just fine until some yahoo rabble rouser (Toni Saunders) who apparently gets her jollies from leading high school children in protests, came along and encouraged them to tell administrators at Brockton to go fuck themselves.

But don’t be fooloed – this is a Joyce McNickles wet dream. Somewhere she’s sitting in her mansion in Sutton waiting for Old Balls viagara to kick in, and she’s saying to hereself, “Why didn’t I think of that?” Because if you think Sonya Conner has an easy time manipulating college students, think of how much easier it is to manipulate high school students.

In all fairness, I’d probably have done it if I was in high school. What do you have to lose? It’s nice out. You forgot to do your homework. School’s almost done for the year. A priest has told you it’s OK to break the rules. You brought your guitar with you. Fuck it. Let’s protest. Anything to get out of physics class.

And I guarantee that half of this protest is assholes, and the other half is people like the guitar playing ginger who just saw an opportunity and took it. Anyone who thinks high school kids are smart enough to understand what the fuck they’re doing clearly doesn’t understand how the brains of high school kids function. Good kids are thinking about college. Bad kids are thinking about booze and weed. And all kids are thinking about sex. But not a single kid in that school gives a flying fuck about the insane, radical agenda that people like Toni Saunders are trying to sell them.

Oh yea, and there’s nothing “peaceful” about this either. Especially this part:

Screen Shot 2015-05-07 at 11.29.07 PM

Walking outside the classrooms where kids are trying to learn and teachers are trying to teach while yelling, “Come on out, come on out!!” Yea, that sounds like something grown adults should be condoning.

“We goin change the demerit system.”

LOL. No you’re not kids. You’re just gonna get yourself some more demerits. And guess what? Toni Saunders ain’t gonna serve that Saturday detention for you. She’ll be sleeping in late and taking a steamy Saturday morning dump while you festoon in an non-air conditioned classroom.

Because you’re high school kids. You have no rights. I know a wacky professional rabble rouser told you that your opinion matters, but it doesn’t. Because you’re in high school. All those people you see on TV demonstrating in the streets and blocking traffic? Those are adults. They don’t go to high school and live with their parents.

Seriously though, what the hell is the problem here? You get demerits for everything from “being tardy and cutting classes to cheating and defacing school property.” Where was the unfair part there? You defaced school property and cut class. What the fuck do you want? A cookie? Hey geniuses here’s a novel idea – get to class on time and follow the rules. Boom. No demerits.

But according to one of these whiny little McMuffins, the school is levying punishment differently if you have black or brown skin. I’m SURE that is EXACTLY what is going on in Brockton High School. White kids are tagging up lockers like hot cakes and instead of getting a demerit they’re getting a white privilege plaque. This explains why you can drive through Brockton at Noon on a Tuesday and you will see grown men drinking 40’s without a care in the world.

I think the most fucked up part about this though is that the principal apparently just let it happen:

“Brockton High Principal Sharon Wolder was out on the grounds with a two-way radio as students gathered Thursday.

“This conversation is really about behavior – the consequences and the supports we put into place to help students succeed academically, and as a member of the school community,” she said later.

School officials must work with students, using demerits or something else, to understand the root of the behavior and then find the right ways to support them, and move them forward, she said.

Wolder has formed a student advisory committee to examine the issue, which meets next week.”

See that right there? That’s why we have grown adults blocking traffic whenever they feel like the dumbass cause they’re protesting for is worth inconveniencing the rest of us. Because when they’re kids they’re being taught by dumbass principals, who aren’t allowed to suspend kids because dumbass politicians won’t let them, that it’s OK to disrupt the rest of us because they don’t feel like following the rules.

Newsflash principal – school officials do not have to “work with students to understand the root of bad behavior.” Because students are equals with teachers. It’s a pretty simple relationship. Kids follow rules. Adults enforce them. These kids intentinoally disrupted the learning environment of 4,000 other kids. You’re supposed to punish them, not give into their demands. End of discussion.

Now for a Turtleboy special, let’s look at the dumb things people have said on Facebook about this…

Screen Shot 2015-05-07 at 11.36.52 PM

When Matt Blinn was at Brockton High School he got suspended for being on his phone during lunch. First of all, it takes a special kind of nudnik to look back on their high school career and still have a grudge against their teachers. There were some teachers and administrators I didn’t care for in high school because they made me follow rules all the time. Then I became an adult and I realized I didn’t give a shit anymore because they were right.

Hey Matt, if you knew that was a suspendable offense, then you probably shouldn’t have done it. And if you did know it was a rule, then you should probably stop being a whiny little bitch and own that shit. Oh yea, also, you didn’t go to Brockton High School:

Screen Shot 2015-05-07 at 11.37.02 PM

LOL. The mean streets of Belmont. Home of the infamous Mitt Romney gang.

Screen Shot 2015-05-07 at 11.36.25 PM

The fact that Lloyd Simpson thinks this protest was a good idea, tells you everything you need to know about this protest.

Screen Shot 2015-05-07 at 11.32.16 PM

LOL. That’s cute. Newsflash Heather – society doesn’t cater to you. You cater to society. Because when you get your GED and leave Brockton High School for good, you’re gonna have to learn to make my Whopper MY way. Not the other way around. Here’s an idea for “the way you learn.” Read a fucking book and do your homework. Then maybe study for tests and quizzes. That might help.

Screen Shot 2015-05-07 at 11.31.58 PM

“The number of graduation would of been higher.” Hey Mr. Wonderful, the problem isn’t that the “way of teaching should also be diverse.” That’s just a collection of words that your simple mind threw together, which ultimately has no meaning. The problem is that it’s hard to improve graduation rates when you ride around town and this is what you see:

Screen Shot 2015-05-07 at 11.31.10 PM

It’s similar to being prisoners.” Gee whiz, I wonder where he learned that from? Oh yea, assholes from the ACLU who keep suggesting that safety procedures in schools are akin to prisons. Brockton High School is actually nothing like a prison. Largely because you get to go home when the bell rings and you can hook up with chicks.

Now let’s look at what smart people said:

Screen Shot 2015-05-07 at 11.30.23 PM

Oh look, an adult who has moved on with their life and understands now that the rules from school were put in place to help her, not hurt her. She must be racist.

Screen Shot 2015-05-07 at 11.33.11 PM

Boom. Roasted. Get back to class hippies.

Honestly I agree with some things in this article but there are a few things this man was immensely wrong about and obviously doesn’t live in Brockton nor does he have kids that go to Brockton high. I am a freshman and I think that the demerit system is a little crazy. Yes, I am an Irish Italian white girl but then again I’ve also accumulated 3 times this year. And that is due to the fact that they give us 3 minutes to get from one end of the building to the other. Which if you’ve never seen the building. Is huge. That and there’s only two hallways 4200 kids can go down and they’re expected to get to class on time. I get pushed. Shoved and stepped on In that hallway on a daily basis. So yes I am late to class but this goes on our record and so is accumulating demerits is not always our fault. And the simple answer would be push your way through. Well half of the school thinks the same thing. That and I only weigh 98 pounds so pushing people that are 6’5 and built like a wall is not an option. So yes maybe the system doesn’t need to go away but maybe we actually need to have more time In the hallways. And this person made us seem like a ton of kids with no respect. Well guess what we have awards upon awards for being a good school. We have been in the New York Times numerous times and further more he came at us about our money. And that was rude. That has nothing to do with us. And I think he should drive through the city and visit us some time. But you know what maybe you shouldn’t because if people found out it was you in that car that bad mouthed our city like that. They would probably drag you out of your car and beat you senseless. And I know I just contradicted my self a bit. But you have no idea who we are or what we’ve been through. We are not what you just just made us sound like and we are not bad kids either. Thank you sir for talking about something you have no idea about.

Just wanted to say, went to brockton for 2 years, transfered junior year to live with my dad. I graduated last year, I’m not a 50 year old looking back on my highschool career negatively. And yeah, knock me because my father works hard and can afford to live in a nice neighborhood. Your an asshole

I don’t agree with the kids but I disagree with this article even more. The responsibility of graduation rates is on the school system. If kids would rather be out smoking and acting like idiots it’s up to them to save as many as possible. This demerit system does just that, by forcing them to face consequences that don’t equate to the punishment the kids have to behave at all times. That doesn’t mean that the school system is not responsible for the kids learning though. They should work on that.

“ignorant douchebag decides to write irrelevant article on a completely biased viewpoint and considerably retarded reasoning.” You definately don’t go to Brockton High School if you identify these kids as hippies sir. If you’re going to be mental do it where the subject matter pretains to you.

    Sincerely, every actual BHS Student.

I give up, what’s their problem??? The rules seem fair to me!

Why write articles if you don’t know shit. You have no idea what Its like to attend brockton highh. Its not the demerit system that’s the problem. Its that they abuse it. The school is over policed and I get treated unfairly almost every day.

      May 9, 2015 at 12:41 pm

When you say you’re treated unfairly, are you saying you don’t do the things you’re accused of, you think others aren’t punished for the same infraction, or you just don’t like being called out for your behavior?

“Lol stupid kids aren’t gonna change anything” but the principal is involved and listening to them? Also, while you may have just been about chugging natty ice and banging junior smokeshows back in high school, some people were registering to vote and actually staying informed, so no, not all High School kids are idiots. Also, it’s a pity I can’t join in on the conversation on facebook, out of fear of you posting pictures and statuses of mine. If only we were given access to your identity as well..

The directives from Sutton is that the Department of Justice will expand its inquisition….uh…I mean, conversation… about racism to Brockton. This will result in the inevitably formed gestapo…uh…I mean, commission, to have multi-municipality jurisdiction and enforcement powers.

Wanna guess who will be on the new commission?
