Yesterday was the MIAA State Championship Track Meet at Fitchburg State University. You might be asking yourself, “I came here for hot takes – why am I reading about high school track?” And the answer is because Worcester kids dominated it. And quite frankly there aren’t enough good stories about the accomplishments that Worcester kids make every day. Here’s a link to the results

For years Doherty has been the only Worcester Public High School that continually churns out athletes who compete at the state and national level. But in the last couple of years South, Burncoat, and the shared North/Tech team has have produced a bunch of athletes who are force to be reckoned with.

For the 1st time in school history, WTHS/North Track and Field has 11 Boy’s and Girl’s Qualified for the NB National Scholastic Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which will be held at at North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro, N.C. from June 19-21. Also, for the first time, Burncoat High School has 11 Boy’s and Girl’s qualified. This is a tremendous achievement for all of our athletes, representing Burncoat High, North High, Worcester Technical High School, and the Worcester Public Schools.

Our 21 athletes not only represent their individual schools, they also represent the hard work and dedication of student-athletes within the Worcester Public Schools as well as the City of Worcester. Each of our athletes is hard at work trying to raise the necessary funds to compete in this Elite event. Coaches, John Nicol (Burncoat) and Jerry Snay (WT/North) are asking for your support to help get our athletes to North Carolina for this great event. 100% of your donations will help offset the entry fees, transportation costs, hotels, and meals.

The coaches have started a GoFundMe page with their goal of raising $7,000. Here is a link to the page.  I’d love to see what Turtle Riders can do for these AMAZING Worcester kids. These are the kind of kids the Worcester Public Schools produce year and year out that aren’t talked about. But they should be. Let’s meet a couple of them.

Rodney Agyare-May is a Burncoat sophomore, who we predicted in February would make the 2024 Boston Olympics. That might’ve been conservative after yesterday. Agyare-May became the first Burncoat athlete to win a state championship in track since Ron Brace won the shot put in 2004. His time of 48.35 in the 400 meters is slightly insane considering he has two more years of high school. As a matter of fact he would’ve beaten three competitors at the 2012 London Olympics with that time. Perhaps most impressively he was in fifth place heading into the final stretch, before beating out a kid from Bishop Feehan by two hundredths of a second.

Adja Sakor is also a sophomore who attends Worcester Tech. She jumped 18’8″ which in almost any normal year wins by a lot. If you’re a dude reading this then I want you to go outside, run up, and jump as far as you can. Then you’ll have an idea of how much further a 15 year old girl can jump than you. She finished in second place yesterday at the state meet in the long jump, and I’m calling shananigans on that one. The winner was from Cambridge and she jumped 18’8.75″. Ya got that? Adja lost by less than an inch. How is that even scientific? A guy sticking a pole into sand in 2015? Yea, that seems accurate. Cambridge continues to haunt Turtleboy.

Later on Adja went on to place second in the triple jump, with a hop-skip-jump of 37’7.5″. The girl from Cambridge won of course. I blame Gish Jen. Regardless, here’s the final team results for the girls. As you can see, Adja’s 16 points put Worcester Tech into 10th place overall:

Ya got that? One sophomore from Worcester beat the total scores of 100+ other schools. Dis-gusting.

Also going to the National Championship meet is the Tech/North 4×100 team of  George Biney (North), Jovaughn Brown (North), Barrington McLeod (WT), Edward Boamah (North). North High School has had a tough year, and these three kids and their Tech ally deserve to be ambassadors for Worcester in North Carolina.

They’ll also be entering an 800 meter medley team consisting of Biney, Brown, McLeod, and North High’s Ahmir Byfield. Competing alongside them are

  • Freshman Stevanna Bowhile (North) in the triple jump
  • Leilani Torres (WT), Bernice Mensah (WT), Adja Sackor (WT), Essence Martinez(North), Denise Hoxha (WT) in the women’s 800 meter medley
  • Freshman Mary Murphy (Burncoat) in the triple jump
  • Burncoat’s Nana Anane, Lauren Giard, Krystal Thorpe, and Madeline Hayman in the women’s 800 meter medley.
  • Burncoat’s Ethan Decker, Ebenezer Adams, Phil Jones, and Agyare-May in the men’s 800 meter medley.

Special shoutout to the following local athletes who represented the area nicely:

  • Wadeline Janasas (Doherty), 10th place in the 200 meters (26.15).
  • MacKenzie Cyr (Douglas), 7th place in the 2 mile (11:21).
  • Mariessa Ricciardi (Wachusett), 8th place in the 400 metere hurdles (65.27).
  • Bernice Mensah (Worcester Tech), 9th place in the Triple Jump (34’6″).
  • Caroline Leonard (Algonquin), 8th place in the javelin (114’9″).
  • Drew Jean-Guillaume (Shepherd Hill), 2nd place in the 100 meter dash (10.98).
  • Greg Moschella (St. John’s), 7th place in the 400 meters (49.7).
  • Jacob Gore (Algonquin), 8th place in the 400 meters (49.73).
  • Grant Hauver (Wachusett), 3rd place in the mile (4:20).
  • Jameson Koemen (Whitinsville Christian), 4th place in the 2 mile (9:32).
  • Stephen Tencati (Clinton), 3rd place in the javelin (179’4″).
  • Ethan Melia (Shrewsbury), 3rd place in the 400 meter hurdles (56.34).
  • Kevin Hack (Nipmuc), 1st place in the high jump (6’6″).
  • Kyle Monahan (North Middlesex), 3rd place in the high jump (6’4″).
  • Carl Underkoffler (Shrewsbury), 2nd place in the pole vault (13’3″).
  • Nolan Ryan (bad ass name, St. John’s), 5th place in the pole vault (13’3″).
  • Marc-Eddy Paul (St. John’s), 8th place in the long jump (20’10”).
  • Kurt Robakiewicz (Nipmuc), 2nd place in the triple jump (45’4″).
  • Wyatt Bolens (Nashoba), 1st place in the discus (159’1″).
  • Leonardo Ramirez (Fitchburg), 1st place in the shot put (56’7″).
  • Tavian Vassar (Doherty), 8th place in the shot put (50’10”).

Once again, here is the GoFundMe page for these kids. Any contribution, regardless of size, will help these kids achieve their dreams and most importantly, represent Worcester in a positive way. Thanks for your help.

Hey guys I’d like to do a shout out for Tonya Carpenter. She is the girl ( 44 year old woman with her son and a friend ) that got seriously injured while attending a Red Sox game last Friday night at Fenway Park. Tonya Carpenter was struck in the head by Oakland player Brett Lawrie’s bat as she sat near the field between home plate and the third base dugout. She got hit in the head with a broken jagged bat and she immediately bleed profusely. Tonya Carpenter is local. She is from Paxton. Currently her condition is still considered serious. Thoughts and prayers for Tonya Carpenter and her family. God bless her.

Always support the local sports teams. Help the kids live the dream as long as possible before they wake up in the real world.

TB, would you send one of the bloggers to cover and report the results?

Leo Ramirez from Fitchburg is an absolute beast. Undefeated the last two years in the shot for both indoor and outdoor track.

I have to say, I like that the blog is linking to these fundraisers. It never helps to give people the chance for a random act of kindness.
