From a career standpoint, I respect people like Clive MacFarlane. At some point early in his life, he realized that he enjoyed writing, he was articulate and opinionated, and wanted to make a career out of it. He probably went on to college, earned a degree, and continued to work hard until he was offered a job at the Telegram & Gazette. Anybody who can’t respect that journey would have to be foolish.

But just because I respect that part, doesn’t mean I have to respect everything he says. In fact, I don’t agree with a single column that I’ve ever read from him. His recent column involving police brutality and the “Black Lives Matter” movement was the final straw for me, and I decided that an angry Facebook comment would not be enough for me to express how I (and most rational humans) feel, but are too afraid to say because they don’t want to come off as racist.

First, let me tell you who I am. I’m 30 years old. I grew up in a small town next to Worcester. I spent most of my twenties bouncing around between Worcester, Boston, Brockton, and many towns in between. I now live 20 minutes from Worcester, I work 50-60 hours a week to pay my rent and bills. Oh, and I’m a white male…

I was going to leave that last sentence out, but there are people like Clive MacFarlane and Gordon Davis (we all know they’re going to read this) who still actually care about what color somebody’s skin is, even though it’s 2015. And in a strange way, I get it; they are successful African American men who are proud of their race. I get it, but I do not respect it. Anybody who is proud of their race/religion/sexual orientation is just as ignorant as somebody who discriminates against those things.

Why? Because there are bad apples in every bunch. Are white people proud of the Ku Klux Klan? No. Are Christians proud of the Westboro Baptist Church? Absolutely not. Are Muslims proud of ISIS? Highly unlikely. Is a lesbian proud of extreme feminists? No way. Bottom line is this: I am not proud to be a white, heterosexual man. I am proud to be ME. That’s how everybody should think.

Last week, two men were killed by police. In Webster, a white man shot at police, so they returned fire and killed him. The next day, in Roxbury, a black man shot at police, so they returned fire and killed him. Two extremely similar incidents with the same outcome: bad guy died.

We have not heard anything else about the Webster incident, yet the Roxbury incident is still being talked about because of the “Black Lives Matter” protesters that Clive has shown support for once again in his recent column.

My question to anybody who supports the “Black Lives Matter” protesters is this: WHY? The very second that both these men pointed a gun at a cop with the intent to kill, neither of those men’s lives mattered. They weren’t white or black anymore. They were savages that had no respect for the lives of people who are trying to protect their community.

I can somewhat understand why some people were upset with the deaths of Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown. They were both unarmed young men who were killed. This is nothing like those situations. Angelo West was pulled over by police, he pointed an illegally owned gun (anybody with his criminal record is not allowed to own a gun) at the officer, and shot the officer in the face. The other officers, fearing for anybody else getting senselessly shot, returned fire and killed him.

WHY WOULD ANYBODY DEFEND ANGELO WEST AFTER THIS?

Words cannot describe how completely brainless you have to be, to actually believe that this man deserved a slap on the wrist or a fair trial after shooting a cop point blank in the face. Let’s pretend for a second that reliable Roxbury neighborhood rumors are true, and that Angelo was on the ground, cuffed, bleeding and crying. Even if that were true, good!

What imaginary world do you live in, where you expected someone to be like “Hey man, are you ok? Let me clean you off and get you patched up, then maybe we can go grab a beer and talk about why you decided to shoot my coworker in the face. Maybe this was all a big misunderstanding”? Get a clue.

To me, the majority of the “Black Lives Matter” protesters are nothing more than a hate group, just like the Ku Klux Klan. Only difference is, this group has a name that tries to guilt people into thinking they have a meaningful agenda, and that you’re a bad person if you don’t support everything that they say.

I’m sorry, but if you want to call me racist because I think Angelo got what he deserved, then so be it . A few years back, a very good friend of mine (who happened to be black, OMG!) passed away, and I’m pretty sure that I cried just as hard as I did when I lost one of my parents.I can’t say I’ve ever heard of a Klan member weeping like a baby when a black man died.

I’m an atheist, and I actually prayed for that friend to pull through in the hospital. That says enough right there. So you can take your racist accusations and shove them back down your white, black, yellow, blue, red, or green mouths.

The day that I hear about a cop who beat up and shot a little black boy who smiled at a cop while sucking a lollipop and holding a bible, I will be right there with the “Black Lives Matter” protesters. But until then, please stop trying to make people think that a monster didn’t deserve to be taken from this planet just because he was the same color as you. It’s 2015. We are all equal, unless you’re an asshole.

Great article ..I am a police officer for fifteen years and have never had to pulled out my gun, but the day a person points a gun at me, you bet ya that I won’t hesitate to pull the trigger. Until these postesters walk in a police’s officer
shoes, deal with countless assaults, helping a child, elderly, or your avarage citizens. Until you put on a 5 pound vest, a 25 lbs gun belt wearing it 8-10’hours a day , dealing with thugs screaming profanity in you face, than don’t judge a police officer that had to shot and KILL a armed felony shooting at the police. It is not a race issue at all…it’s about going home to see my wife and kids.

I am so burnt out on the “I’m Black, and I matter” broken record. Newsflash: ALL skin colors matter, so get over yourselves. Same with Gays. There is one particular poster on the T&G forum, who is stuck on reminding everyone he’s a Gay man. Yeah, so, Time to move on. It’s ridiculous, the daily, constant “hey! here I am! look at me! I’m over here! Look at me!” Good Grief.

I couldn’t have said it better myself.

And that’s coming from a straight, white man who doesn’t dwell on being straight, white, and male. But I guess that’s just my privilege talking.

I’ve never understood the concept of being proud of something you had zero control over.

Be proud of what you’ve achieved in your career thru hard work. Be proud if you worked hard to excel academically. Be proud of treating others well, if that’s how you choose to be.

But being proud of your genetic makeup decided mostly by chance and without any intervention or control on your part? SILLY AND STUPID.

One of the best blogs yet. Very well said. Dear Clive better pray he nevers needs the police to come to his aid. Oh yeah, they will, because they are professional and they will protect his sorry ass when he’s in need just like they will any other person who isn’t pointing a gun at them. You point a gun at a police officer and you deserve to die. And no, I am not married to a policeman nor are there any in my family. AND I don’t care what the color of your skin is.

In fact my son got into a little trouble when he was young and dumb. He called me to come and pick him up. When I arrived the police sergeant told me that my son was a little disrespectful and he ” knew his rights.” Let me tell you, I ripped him a new one. His offense was minor-just a kid being stupid but not a prayer in hell I was going to allow my son to disrespect a police officer. I told him if that was the path he was going to choose that he better not call me if he were to get in trouble again. He wouldn’t enjoy those “rights” living in my house in the nice warm bed I provided for him. I told him that you say, yes sir, no sir, and thank you sir and he wouldn’t ever have a problem. Manners and respect…that’s all anyone needs, including the police who are out there putting their life on the line to protect ALL of us.

Perfect summary: “We are all equal, unless you’re an asshole.” Gotta love the Turtle.
