This is Jay Royster from Whitinsville.

He’s a father of 3, a coach, and until recently a teacher at Northbridge Middle School where two of his children are enrolled. I say recently because he lost his job in November after being stabbed by an out of control student while also trying to protect other children from being hurt by this student.

This story first came to our attention when we were alerted to a Facebook post made by his wife in early November.

Normally I’m skeptical of Facebook posts about things that seem so unbelievable that they can’t possibly be true. But at the same time I’ve also worked in public schools for 11 years, so I knew all too well that it was definitely possible that this story was factual. Everything she wrote about schools having different standards of discipline for well behaved students and poorly behaved students is entirely accurate. Kids who were constant behavior problems were seldom held to the same set of standards as kids who never got in trouble. Often administrators and guidance counselors feel empathy for poorly behaved students because they tend to come from bad homes. I can’t tell you how many times I wrote a kid up for smoking in the bathroom or refusing to take his hat off after I asked him 5 million times that day, and I’d get the referral back with, “Spoke with student about this, won’t happen again,” written by the vice principal.

This happens because Presidents Bush and Obama started pushing for school “accountability.” And part of that accountability was making sure more kids graduated on time, less kids failed, and suspension rates decreased. The idea was that schools were failing these kids, instead of the kids failing themselves. And the only cure for this was for the federal government to threaten to withhold funding for schools that were contributing to the “school to prison pipeline” by suspending kids who committed suspendible offenses, and failing kids who failed their classes.

I’ve also seen a lot of ridiculous IEP’s (Individual Ed Plans). These plans spell out accommodations that the student is to receive because of a disability they have. For instance, kids with auditory issues would have to have seats in front of the class. But others were more ridiculous, such not counting missing homework against a kid’s average, not taking points off for spelling mistakes, and letting a kid go and see the school psychologist whenever they were having a bad day. Most of these IEP’s were legitimate, but on some occasions they were abused by students and overzealous parents who threatened to sue you and the school if every accommodation was not met. IEP’s are legally enforceable, and thus schools generally do not let teachers fail kids who are on them.

With that said, I spoke with James Royster about the incident, and confirmed what he told me with other faculty. He began working at NMS that year in a class for behavior problem students, many of who are on IEP’s. All parties agree that the following occurred on October 18:

  • A 7th grader, who is slightly larger than an average man, had an IEP that allowed him to sleep for 15 minutes at a time, but set no stipulations as to the amount of time between naps. In theory if the student wanted to sleep for 15 minutes, go to the bathroom, and then sleep again for 15 minutes, this would be allowed by his IEP.
  • The IEP also mandates that teachers provide him with soda in order to help wake him up. I’m not even kidding about this part, the IEP basically was calling for teachers to feed the student a stimulant (caffeine) because he didn’t sleep enough at home. No funding was provided for this so teachers had to pay for sodas for him on their own, and the student frequently abused the privilege.
  • The student’s sleeping became an ongoing joke, and he would sometimes sleep on the floor. On one occasion another teacher tape marked around his body to make it look like a dead body.
  • James Royster taught in the “Connect Program,” which has a lot of behaviorally challenged students. His official position title was Instructional Assistant, and across the hall from him was a classroom with a padded room that his students sometimes went in.
  • His class had hour long group therapy sessions with kids, conducted by the District Adjustment Counselor Andrew Balboni and the Board Certified Behavior Analyst Melissa Young. I can tell you from experience that these people are not there to help teachers. They are there to advocate for the kids, and often blame teachers for the student’s behavior.
  • Melissa Young often hugged kids and gave them back rubs, which made it uncomfortable for some of the teachers.
  • One day, hours after a session, Royster got the student a soda, per his IEP, but minutes later he fell asleep. The teacher attempted to wake him up, but the student refused and told Mr. Royster that he didn’t have to do work that day. Mr. Royster had no choice but to allow this to happen because IEP’s are legally binding.
  • The student was snoring loudly, and his pants were coming down exposing his plumber’s crack. He also ended up missing lunch. When Mr. Royster tapped on the desk to wake him up the student was alarmed and yelled, “fuck you I’m not getting up.”
  • Per the student’s plan Mr. Royster responded by saying, “that’s not how you’re expected to behave.” I can tell you from experience that nonsense like this is what teachers are often told to say to students by behavioral therapists because it’s nicer.
  • The kid ignored Mr. Royster, pushed his desk, walked out of his classroom, and attempted to go into the padded room classroom across the hallway.
  • The teacher in the padded room blocked the student from entering, so the student began to open lockers, lie down on the floor in the hallway, and cause a huge scene.
  • Soon after that the student began running down the hallway and Mr. Royster attempted to stop him. The student pushed Mr. Royster and punched him in the face.
  • At this point the period was ending so students began to pass in the hallways, which created a dangerous atmosphere for all of them. Mr. Royster attempted to wrestle the out of control student to the ground, grabbed his legs, and kept him on the ground.
  • Mr. Royster is not trained in taking down out of control students, even though he was placed in a classroom with out of control students. This ultimately is what would cost him his job.
  • However, the teacher across the hallway is trained, but he was busy running his class and could not immediately assist.
  • Because of the ongoing danger the student posed to himself and others, Mr. Royster walked the student into an empty maintenance room where the student found a screwdriver, jumped onto a table, and stabbed Royster in the arm, forcing him to be in a sling for several days. It did not puncture his skin because he had a thick sweater on, but it caused substantial bruising.
  • Finally the other teacher was able to assist in restraining the student, but once he got up he continued to cause a scene by pulling his pants down and exposing his genitalia to other students in the hallway.
  • At this point a female teacher, hearing the commotion came over to help and pulled his pants up. The student yelled “fuck you guys” and once again pulled his pants down, exposing his genitals.
  • After that the student saw another student drinking from the bubbler and kicked him in the back.
  • Mr. Royster is a larger man who coaches and played football, so he tried to tough out the injury. However, at the request of the school nurse the next day she told him to go to urgent care because his arm was so swollen. He provided us with the medical report from urgent care in Milford.

  • At no point did anyone in administration at NMS ask him how he was doing, rather the entire focus was on him violating protocol by restraining a violent and out of control student.
  • The student was given an ambulance ride with Melissa Young, and despite the fact that Royster was stabbed, another student was assaulted, and multiple students were exposed to a 7th graders genitals, no report was requested from Superintendent Catherine Stickney or Principal John Zywien.

  • Mr. Royster contacted both of them to offer a written report about what happened, and neither of them wrote back to him. He attempted to make an appointment with Dr. Stickney but she was not available, nor was Greg Rosenthal, the head of the SPED Department.
  • On Monday October 22 Mr. Royster returned to school, and at the end of the day had a sit down meeting with Zywien and Rosenthal, neither of whom asked him how he was feeling despite being stabbed and being referred to urgent care by the school nurse. The entire focus was on the student, and what Royster had done wrong in this volatile episode.
  • The student was never suspended despite committing multiple violations that are grounds not only for suspension, but for expulsion. Despite being stabbed by the kid Mr. Royster was willing to have a sit down meeting with the child and his mother to work out a plan to avoid this from happening again, but the school did not follow through. Instead they threw him back in the classroom and expected the student and Mr. Royster to continue on like nothing happened.
  • Because he worked in a classroom with so many behavior problems, Mr. Royster asked several times if he could get restraint trained, but he never was.
  • Two weeks later Royster’s wife made her Facebook, and he was terminated shortly thereafter. The reasons given in his termination letter was that his wife mentioned confidential information in her Facebook post (mentioning the sleeping accommodation in the student’s IEP, even though she never said the kid’s name), and the use of restraint without proper training.

  • Because Mr. Royster had been at the school less than 45 days they could terminate him without cause, and he had no opportunity to appeal it or fight it with the union.
  • This story was confirmed by other teachers, all of whom believe it is outrageous that Mr. Royster was a well liked and competent teacher. Many of them feel unsafe working in such an environment because they know that this student is violent and enabled by administration.
  • Mr. Royster documented everything that happened in a notebook, which he sent to me. There are several other students whose out of control behavior has also been accommodated and excused by the school and the district’s behavioral therapists.
  • The district contested unemployment because they said he was fired with cause. However, upon appeal by Mr. Royster the state looked into and determined that he was terminated without cause, due to the extenuating circumstances of the incident, and would be receiving unemployment. The school is appealing this, even though they know he has a wife and three kids to take care of.

  • The teacher across the hall from Mr. Royster was sent a letter by Dr. Stickney to meet with her about why he didn’t restrain the kid before Royster did. In essence, one teacher was fired for restraining a violent and out of control student, and the other was in trouble for NOT restraining the kid. Again, the student was not punished in any way whatsoever.

After the wife’s Facebook post was seen by so many people the superintendent responded by sending out an email to faculty and parents filled with lies in an attempt to cover up the story.

Dear Families,

Unfortunately, I am reaching out to you with a heavy heart.  I will begin by stating our revised mission again:

The Northbridge Public Schools, in partnership with students, families and the community, provide a robust educational experience that inspires critical thinking, collaboration and creativity. We strive to cultivate resilience, personal responsibility and effective communication skills in all students to ensure their social-emotional well-being and personal success.

Our sole purpose is to educate and care for your children in a safe, secure environment.  This takes a team – a village – to do this most important task well. Personal safety, emotional safety, physical safety, and academics – it’s our agenda everyday.

Please know that we take our responsibilities very seriously. We investigate every report or concern.  The public is not made aware of official results or consequences due to confidentiality, whether it be for students or staff.  I give you my personal assurance that we will always notify families if we feel as though students’ safety may have been jeopardized. I  It is unfortunate to know that posts are very often assumed to be true without actually considering the potential validity of the information.  Social media posts often raise questions because they don’t provide factual information. We are more than happy to address any questions or concerns that you may have.  Please know that recent stories sound extremely alarming.  Given student confidentiality, it is most fair to say that students did not face eminent harm.  As you know, if there was a concern for student or staff safety, we would have utilized a lock-down. Mr. Zywien would have followed up with a Connect Ed call.

Please know that we have the staff and students’ best interest at the forefront of all of our actions.  If at any time you have concerns, please assist us by making a phone call instead of reacting or speculating based on a social media post.  We encourage you to be involved in the operation of the schools.  The District Advisory Council meets quarterly, and all are welcome.  You are also welcome to attend a School Council meeting at each building.

Thank you,

Dr. Stickney

Parent were not alerted about the incident because in her opinion “student safety” was not jeopardized, even though several student were sexually harassed via flashing, and another student was assaulted at the bubbler, as was witnessed by faculty. So this is either a lie, or her idea of what is and isn’t a safety issue is completely off base.

Additionally, she tries to blame it on social media and plays the “fake news” card. Unfortunately for her everything in the wife’s post turned out to be true.

I’ve been working on this story for a while now because I wanted to make sure I got it right. Everything above has been confirmed and is verifiable. The school will not comment because of confidentiality reasons, and because schools avoid bad publicity like the plague.

What happened to James Royster is an injustice. He was stabbed and assaulted by a student, required medical care, and wasn’t even asked how he was feeling by his superiors. Instead they looked for ways to blame him and ended up terminating him, just because they could. Remember that the next time someone tells you that there’s no reason for teacher’s unions. They could get away with doing this to him because he had been there less than 45 days, but if there were no unions they’d do this to every teacher.

This story is everything that is wrong with public schools today. Because of the top-down mandates from Washington, schools hire administrators who specialize in creating good data. And that means less suspensions, less kids failing, and more “accountability” for teachers like Royster. This manifests itself at places like NMS when violent students are allowed to stay in school because administrators don’t have the guts to stand up to Boston and Washington.

It doesn’t just affect the teachers either; it directly endangers the safety and well being of other students. Let’s not forget, a student was assaulted by the offending student. That student’s parents were never alerted that this happened. Nor were the parents of the countless students who were forced to look at a 7th graders genitals against their will. These are crimes that Northbridge Middle School swept under the rug in the name of confidentiality.

Then there’s the fact that the got in trouble for telling his wife what happened at work. The idea that you can’t tell your wife anything about your work life due to confidentiality is equally absurd. Why are we treating teachers like they’re in the CIA? How was he supposed to explain the sling on his arm to his wife and kids? His wife never mentioned the name of the student, she just saw an injustice and had the nerve to speak out about it. And for that they fired her husband.

This is why I started this blog anonymously instead of using my real name – because public servants have no free speech rights in this country. Every day teachers, firefighters, nurses, EMTs, cops, and anyone who deals with at-risk populations are subject to behavior like this. They are not allowed to tell their stories for fear of losing their jobs, so we will tell it for them.

Scrolling… Scrolling… Scrolling… Oh look! It’s the guy who used to follow me home and throw rocks at me, yelling “Chink!” … … … Hey, I know that face… It told me I’m disgusting for eating cats before jumping me with …that guy, there! And there’s a couple more who also joined in… OMG! The kid who wailed on me with a lacrosse stick across the legs until my knees swelled and I had to see a doctor.

You know what they all have in common besides racism and violent tendencies? They’re all graduates of the Northbridge Public Schools… They all received no punishment… And they’re all faithful Facebook supporters and friends of Jay Jay Royster, the beloved middle school Instructional Aide who, according to his story, published by Turtleboy Sports – right next to headlines about “Vapid Snatch Roosters”, “Creepsters”, “Spunk Dumpsters”, and “Velociratchets” – was fired because of “corrupt administrators” who “coddle” “violent” students…

According to this articulate piece of proto-journalistic scoundrel-ism, Jay Jay Royster is a hero, sacrificed to the gods of PC-SJW culture by the school administration to cover up their incompetence and keep their cushy six figure jobs after he so selflessly “saved” a violent SPED student from himself, “saved” others from the student, and got “stabbed” in the process.

Not sure how going to the doctor the next day with bruises is proof that you were “stabbed”, but O.K… Dude got “stabbed” in a supply closet by a SPED student.

    Allow me to repeat that.

Dude got “stabbed” in a SUPPLY CLOSET by a SPED student…

Wasn’t the student just sleeping a minute ago… in his classroom? …how exactly did he “wind up in a supply closet”?

Vagueness… … …deflection… … … so F’n detailed about how your sage, un-credentialed, definitely-not-certified, bottom-of-the-totem-pole, inexperienced judgment finds line items in his confidential Individual Education Plan to be WACK!

If Turtleboy Sports had any inkling of actual investigative journalistic experience, THAT would have been questioned.

He thought he knew better, and he went against it, and it backfired… …

And instead of taking any kind of responsibility, he went to Turtleboy Sports, home of “Vapid Snatch Roosters”, “Creepsters”, “Spunk Dumpsters”, and “Velociratchets”, to so selflessly cry for “real” help for his poor former SPED student by continuing to publicly tell people his student’s confidential and personally identifying information to an audience that has wondered aloud over his condition and concluded in comments that the kid is a “MONSTER” to be “sent away” or “separated” … “perverted” … gonna wind up in “big boy jail” anyway…

You are not supposed to create that atmosphere at a school. You got so fixated, hell-bent, on notions of punishment and ideas of “justice”, and you took… you ARE taking it out on the kid. My god what if one of your violent friends, our fellow graduates, goes to that school… looking for that “Monster”?

Do I need to name your friends? It’s for “safety”… Maybe just where they work? Think they’ll sweat when they read this?

I know we were all thirteen once but, THAT guy, the one tellin’ you not to let the liberal lunatics get to you… “had issues”… just sayin’.

I can’t believe I was raised in this school system… with these people. I can’t believe my town reads this as news and collectively and publicly condemn a 7th grade kid to a place where he will always have to look over his shoulder. This entire town, every one of you, has been this kid at one time. You can’t throw a rock in this town without hitting someone who’s thrown a rock at someone.

If you ever find yourself in the town of Northbridge, MA. Do yourself and life in general a favor…

    …just keep scrolling…

You should consider the fact that the teacher took the story to facebook and the filth that is turtle boy, rather than the local paper or news affiliate, as a sign of a disingenuous story and an unprofessional educator who lashed out after being fired for breaking a confidentiality agreement. The incident within the school and the response by the school is an entirely different issue than the adults intentional facebook post, days later, and his willful continued disclosure of the students confidential information to his wife and turtleboys despite being told that the confidentiality agreement still holds whether he is employed by the school or not. Turtleboys and the instructional aid are conflating consequences a child with asperger’s gets to the consequences a normally functioning adult gets… engaging in whataboutism, and trying to nullify the highly unprofessional acts of the adult by exaggerating highlites from a separate incident where he got “stabbed” by trying to “save” people. They are not journalists. They are social and political agitators who’s motivating drive is singling out private individuals for public shame. They break social media acceptable use policies daily and play victim over free speech. And the teacher went to them… not a social worker or professional psychologist, and gave them personally identifying information about a special ed child with asperger’s and other development disabilities under the guise that he wants to help the student get the help he needs… Nobody at turtleboys took the time to weigh the newsworthiness of this child’s private info vs his right to privacy. Sources are the teacher involved and, vaguely, “other teachers.” This isnt news, its cruel gossip that does not contribute to the larger issues of underfunded schools and resources for dealing with special ed. The instructional aid lost his cool pending the results of an investigation that could have absolved him and instead targeted his student on social media and participated in a blogs campaign to vilify a child. There are legitimate questions about how the school responded to the incident at the school. The question of why the instructional aid got fired is not a legitimate question. He broke the public trust every parent has that he wont go on facebook and shit talk students and embarrass them before all his classmates and their parents. What student will trust a teacher who does that?

Kids getting taken out of class in handcuffs was a regular occurrence. you need to separate people even at a young age call a spade a God damn spade….last point is the turtle not even mentioning the ripped out earrings like a bunch of esl bitches fighting during lunch period. Until The State Steps Up To The Plate For More Local School Funding, maybe the Town should help in more funding for the Schools. Has not the School District cut many staff positions over the last five years? Many cannot afford Transportation Fee’s, and After School Activity Fee’s., if you have more then one child in the School system. If a family may not meet certain financial guidelines they have to pay these fee’s, is my understanding? Plus hire more staff, to help with Special Ed mandates, other needs? May not be a total answer, but if their was another School professional in the room, that was restraint qualified, may it have helped prevent the situation?

Some of these suggestions to help fund the School District, by the Town could be recalibrated if the State come’s up with additional funding.(Relative to the School Budget Foundation State Report)

    1. Since the Town averages a 2.5% average growth, which that 2.5% growth is passed on in the yearly Property Tax levy. Take…. .0.01%, or .0.02%, of that revenue a year, leaving the Town with sufficient growth in revenue, and apply it to the annual School Budget, if possible? Plus adding in the new Community Preservation Act funding from the Taxpayers, Renters? To help pay for any part of maintaining the Schools Athletic Fields, Admin Building because of it’s historical footprint, if possible? Numbers are a suggestive works in progress, and are not cast in cement., maybe good debate starters, for our Town leaders?

    2. Consider reducing all Town Departments, Town Funding, and line item accounts by a very small #.0.1% -#0.1.1/16 over future budgetary years, ‘excluding’ the ‘School District’, and the ‘DPW’. Both which are budget challenged in my opinion? The DPW’s annual budget has been suggestively level funded at almost $1 million dollars over the last 15 years. Plus DPW manpower reductions in the early 1980’s have never been really fully addressed by the Town, in my opinion? Apply that savings to help Nbridge Budget challenged School District? Numbers are a suggestive works in progress, and are not cast in cement., good Town leaders debate starters?

    3. Identify surplus Town land, and consider maybe selling it, to help the School District, because of not of enough funding from the State?

    4. Sit down with State and Federal Representatives Office Managers? To ask if their may be any additional Govt Financial aid, to help the Nbridge School District?

    5. Encourage feedback from our own Town Committee’s, and the FINCOM, Nbridge Citizens, for any other possible suggestions on helping the yearly School Budget?

I think the School District, suggestively eliminated several Admin Positions do to lack of suggestive Funding from the State, and potential innovative extra suggestive funding from the Town?

Assistant Supt, Director of Curriculum and Planing, Admin Assistant, one or two Vice Principals, plus about 20 additional student teacher direct positions if I recall. Those that are left may be handling those additional duties?

Cost of Administrators may be the going rate, unless you may get a retired Administrator?

Confidentiality exists because you have a moral obligation to protect students from public shame and criticism while they are there. You’re definitely not supposed to get on facebook, blab about a students confidential information, and participate in a blogs’s attempt to paint developmentally challanged students as monsters. Yeah theres a difference standard for regular education students than special ed students. Theres also a different standard for adults vs. Kids. Get the fuck over it. Nothbridge sucks because its people cant see through this muck slinging monkey writing.

His wife is pure trash. She works At Whitinsville dentist in town and tells The story to the patients. She is a young little pothead who thinks dressing her kids in nice sneakers and making them the popular kids makes her a good parent. Those kids will end up just like her and dad, making Facebook posts to complain about how things didn’t go their way. Spend Less time on Facebook and more time keeping what your husband tells you confidential. She is an attention seeker and was looking for her fifteen minutes of fame by exaggerating a school incident. If you don’t like the school system in northbridge then move, ya right – they will be lifers Because they think the town actually gives a shit about them. Her circle of friends has always been questionable- a bunch of 4.5s that think they’re 10s with their noses riding high taking 10 selfies a day and neglecting their families by spending the night on Facebook trying to get some shares and likes while all the real parents sit back and laugh at this pathetic cry for attention

My guess would be the female teacher who pulled the perp’s (um, child’s) pants back up.
      Women talk more than men.

Child wants to be expelled so he can get out-of-district placement, Supt doesn’t want to pay for it.
I’ve had to deal with something similar — child got worse, we all ignored it.

He may have been an “instructional assistant” and on the job for a short time, BUT…the union/teacher’s association absolutely could get involved, and SHOULD, if not on behalf of this particular faculty member, then on the other aspects of the case (particularly if this “student” has ANY actual teachers who are association members)

    For example:
    – expecting staff to provide sodas at their personal expense : I doubt that is in the contract or considered a standard professional obligation.
    – creating a hostile working environment (for staff who were sworn at, or who were threatened)
    – creating a hostile working environment (sexual harassment – on behalf of staff who were exposed to the nudity)

Also, the other students’ parents should explore the district’s policy’s on sexual harassment, and start seeing what type of accountability the district has (if any).

Finally, when is the school up for accreditation? NEASC might be interested in hearing about this.

Oh, and townsfolk need to hop on down to the next school committee meeting.

They should not. He broke a legally binding agreement. Instructional assistants are not even union members. It is a waste of time and effort spent on someone who refuses to accept that what he did was wrong, and tries to justify it by comparing his actions to that of an underdeveloped child. He was allowed to return to school and continue working after simply being told he’s not trained in child restraint and shouldn’t attempt it again. The incident had passed, until an adult with a childish need for attention and a skewed sense of justice tried to invite shame and ridicule on a student he’s entrusted with protecting.

True story. I retired a few years ago from an administrative position after a very successful career. My kids were still in high school (I had kids late) and I was too young to be sitting around playing cribbage, so I decided to become a substitute teacher in my mid sized suburban town. I lasted one day. One. Single. Day.

Actually, I should mention the school day happened to be a 1/2 day so, technically, I lasted a 1/2 day. I walked out of there with a new appreciation of how painful migraine headaches are and a newfound and deep respect for anyone who calls themselves “teacher”.

I think your missing the point. As it is with most schools teachers are put in places ALOT of the time where they do not have licensure or appropriate knowledge because the schools can not afford the appropriate amount of personnel. I have had to sub ( even tho I’m a core content teacher) for the special ed teacher yet I don’t have licensure in SPED or restraint which were required for some of the students. As it said he was placed in this position so maybe he didn’t have a choice? Also if other students were going to be placed in harms way whether it’s getting kicked or getting exposed to I think any sane person would take down the one person to protect all the other kids

The student was trying to leave the room and they blocked his path and grabbed him first. Everything else happened after that. If that teacher kept his hands to himself, that incident would never of happened. The student was trying to get away without incident.

You’ve clearly never stepped foot in a classroom, especially a behavioral one. First of all the district should be offering these trainings – but they don’t because they don’t want to pay the IAS the $10 an hour they make to stay after school. He was doing what he thought best to protect others. The student bolted and kicked a smaller kid in the back? Should they just let him continue to aggress towards other students? What if there were a student with mobility issues or medically fragile in the hallway at the same time? Your negative Nancy are the one whose missing the point. Maybe you should step out of your office and run one of these classrooms for a day

So…what should they have done? Let the student sleep, with his backside hanging out, in class? Or let him storm around the building, disrupting classes?

Using your logic, if a student pulls out a weapon at school, everyone should wring their hands while paging the people who have had restraint training.

Nancy, get real. Schools are SUPPOSED to be for educating students. They are not supposed to be day cares or health facilities, though a whole lot of liberals have made them into that.

Northbridge had a choice a long time ago. If this student could not be given “the best” education possible at NMS (per IEP and SPED terminology), then the district could foot the bill to send him elsewhere…not a cheap option, but maybe the best for all students involved. Furthermore, IEPs don’t always mean blank check for students to break school rules…a backbone and a good attorney could have deal with this already, had the student disrupted school in the past.

“Had he of not touched the student in the first place, this wouldn’t of happened.”?! Are you fucking serious?! If the adults had not managed to stop this student, he would have either a) injured the teacher even worse (stabbed him somewhere not covered by a thick sweater, like his eye or neck which could’ve potentially been fatal) or b) run down the hall where another student could’ve been injured worse than the one that was kicked at the water fountain!

Public school teacher here and my heart goes out to this man. The educational system in Mass is so extremely flawed to the point where I have contemplated if this job is truly worth it, despite it being my life long goal and something to which I have dedicated time (college + a master’s while working full time, then working above and beyond the set hours) and the money I have spent (college, masters, and numerous licenses and tests that are required). You are so correct in pointing out the governmental influence in the “No Child Left Behind Act”, which did have good intentions at first, but like most government directed educational systems and tests (common core, state standards, MCAS, SATS) all of these laws and requirements were written by people with limited to no experience teaching or teaching in an urban setting with kids from all walks of life. It is extremely frustrating, and add admin never being on the teacher’s side to boot.

Now add in IEPs, where in this situation I am shocked that those are actual accommodations provided to the student. That sort of language of “letting a kid sleep in class” is the farthest from appropriate special education language, but know all too well that people have begun to play the system. Currently have a kid in my class who threatened all of his teachers at the beginning of the year, got transferred to my class with no notice. He self harms every day by shoving pencils into his finger nails and draws blood, threatens people’s lives, talks about murder and girls ‘periods (he’s 12). You know what advice I’m given? Speak to him softly (I’ve tried) don’t draw attention (he literally bleeds out on desks in front of horrified students) try to connect with him (anytime I try to develop some sort of relationship he recoils away from me with this serial killer look in his eyes and then proceeds to bark or speak to me incoherently) . Now mind you I also have 30 other 12-13 y/o who are not exactly angels, and I’m supposed to ensure that everyone is at the same level by MCAS in March. But Mom of student tells me you just gotta give him time to warm up to you……

People have absolutely no idea what teachers go through on a daily basis. My heart goes out to this man! Did not let this one system beat you down, like most teachers were in it for the kids and say fuck it to everything else!

      January 11, 2019 at 10:17 am

Also forgot to mention that he had to be transferred from classes because his teachers “didn’t feel safe” so admins solution? Change his class in the middle of the year to new teachers who won’t feel safe with him in the class. YAY!

ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS find time to attend IEPs. Your department MUST have a representative at each and every IEP because that is where you stop/prevent this foolishness. You just don’t agree to it, and then you (or a colleague) doesn’t have to deal with it being in the IEP.

        That’s the mistake.

Now blood is a HazMat — post AIDS we all have “universal precautions” and I’d follow them. Insist on a HazMat cleanup of his desk every time there is blood on it.

It’s an issue of money. the parents want an out of district placement and the district doesn’t want to pay for it. Good luck….

    • Zed
      January 11, 2019 at 11:29 am

First of all, thank you for what you do…honestly. My son had an IEP for ADD, and because the teachers he had were so wonderful, he was able to work himself off the IEP last year. We are very proud parents, and it’s all because of the tremendous work done by his teachers.

So I know (just a little) bit about IEPs, and the affordances in this student’s IEP seem monstrous. To allow a child to sleep during class…how in the Wide World of Sports did that even get in there, put in there from a professional, I would imagine…that is 1,000% counterproductive. Unless they’re only looking for the school to warehouse him at this point, of course.

From the outside looking in, there seems to be a “civil war” of sorts between the teachers in the trenches, who want to do the right thing by all of their students, and the administrators, who want to “signal” the right thing to the powers that be, and keep the money flowing, along with their cushy jobs (and future pensions).

When those of us outside the system look at the system and take umbrage with it, I think we’re really talking about the administrators, not the teachers. The public school system is severely top heavy, and needs an overhaul from the bottom up.

I totally feel you on this one..I am a teacher too and I have been in this situation myself many many times…but I have learned….you cannot just go and put everyone’s information all over social media like a whiney baby..this is a special ed student..he has a diagnosis to even be put in that class. Being mean, or ignoring them and letting them sleep will not solve anything(this is not a justifiable goal). I am sure you have difficulties with some of these kids in your class but what are you suggesting?? Going back to the 20’s and keeping them in cages????? Everyone on this site will claim that everyone has gone wimpy, but this teacher crying like a big baby is such a shame! I bet his family is so proud…maybe he will publish a book one day on how the education system is fu$$ed!!!! If you don’t like teaching, find something else to do!!!!! Well I don’t quite think anyone mentioned that kids should be put in cages, but rather that the government needs to provide more funding and resources to schools to accommodate these students and that the general public should be aware that these things are happening in our schools so that we can better serve those students especially the ones with severe disabilities. Most of these students need explicit one on one settings to achieve the same academic success as their peers, but the public schools do not have enough money to pay for the teachers, so instead they are put into main stream classes with underqualified teachers and 30 other students who are demanding the teacher’s attention, and also deserve it, despite not having special needs

As you so loudly stated, the psycho has “a DIAGNOSED mental condition”! Then you so glibly suggest “if (the teacher) can’t deal with crazy people get a new job.” But what about the poor normal children who get stuck with lunatics like this in their classes? Should those kids just “get a new school”? Why should the kids who are there trying to learn and make something of themselves suffer?

Every kid on an IEP does not mean they have a “mental condition”. My son is on an IEP because he has reading fluency issues. No “mental conditions” here.
This kid has severe social emotional issues far outside the scope of and IEP. Furthermore, they placed this teacher in this classroom with students with severe social emotional issues and did not train him properly. The district set every. Single. Person. In that classroom up for failure.

I’ve long felt that ODD and other behavioral “disabilities” would largely evaporate were we to say “you won’t get a driver’s license before Age 30” on the basis of the disability. We don’t give driver’s licenses to the blind and that’s legal – and if the child is somehow unable to obey rules, well what are red lights and stop signs???

NB: ODD is Oppositional Defiance Disorder, not to be confused with ADD which is ADHD.

I feel badly for this teacher. Most school administrators are not capable of making a decision based upon what is the right thing to do. Instead they take the easy way out, because they fear losing their jobs.

When I was in school in the 70’s, problem kids were removed from the school and sent to a “special school.” We no longer do this.

      MA Schools have it GOOD!!!
Here in RI the public school system, when measured as a whole, would be in the lower 10% of overall performance.
My youngest son (21 now) went to a private school and did not take advantage of the tremendous (and EXPENSIVE!) opportunity, cruising by with a C- average. His 2 best friends friends from public school have a nice collection of Google trophies – including Armed Robbery, Meth, DUI’s, Suicide attempts, etc… So We regret Nothing about pulling him out of the public school system.

Uncle Turtle, I highly suggest you look into this school, specifically it’s special education department / administration. It’s horrifying and disgusting and I would never in my life send a child there again. This school has no idea what to do, makes up their own rules, and constantly puts children’s lives in jeopardy. When I was in 5th grade and we only had a couple weeks to go to summer recess some kid wore shorts to school, a 6th grader. The kid lived a couple of blocks away. His teacher said “Go home and change”. Kid mouthed off. First time I ever saw someone pinned against the wall with their feet off the ground. Kid went home and changed.

I was impressed. It sucks getting old, but boy, I’m glad I’m not going to public schools nowadays.

My sister worked in a school in PA. for dangerous autistic kids. 1 big guy staffer per “Student”. A day school super-max for 18 and unders. The rules were at no time are you to be in a room by yourself with any of them. More than 1 teacher ended up getting stabbed with pencils, like the pencil a couple of inches in. Also a few broken arms among the staff.

They were unteachable. Autistic doesn’t always mean they are passive. It can mean they are unpredictable. They were smart enough to know if they did something, nothing would happen to them. She used to focus on their eyes to see if they were looking at a potential weapon.

She gave up. “I feel for them, but I’m not going to die for them.”
At 18-19 the state set them free. Free to do what?

I am sorry but I don’t think kids with these types of issues should be allowed in regular classrooms. They should be in a SPED class away from regular students. I have a child in school, not this specific one, and they only focus on these little fucks using their disabilities to basically ruin basic education for the majority of good students. The whole IEP bull shit demands are out of control. I just don’t understand why they are allowed in school with normal kids. I am so stressed because I don’t know where to send my kid to go where they are not surrounded by kids that should not be allowed in normal classes. They seem to cater to the shitty kids and take away from the normal kids trying to learn. There needs to be a separation if normal kids and does kids period. They weren’t there. In Massachusetts, they were at the State School in Belchertown.
The one that was shut down in the late ’80s because it was like anything the state runs.

But ADA says nothing about tolerating criminal behavior — and we need to bring back reform schools for malicious children. Try pulling some of these stunts in a hospital and you won’t see HIPPA precluding your name appearing in the police blotter section of the local newspaper….

The only reason half of these children are still in the schools is because it is so expensive to put them anywhere else. Let’s have some price controls on that and you’d see lots of things change.

I’m fortunate and blessed to have children who are normal pains in the ass. I can’t imagine if I had a kid like this. But I imagine if I did I’d understand his disruptions are not fair to the majority. Yes, I’d want him to live as normal a life as possible, but not at the expense of everyone else.
So let’s say this kid makes it 5 more years and graduates because that’s what gets Stickney all wet. Success. She should be proud. Then what? Is this kid going to go to college to get his masters in education and become a teacher to repay society for all they’ve given him? No fuking way. This kid is on the tax payers dime for the rest of his life, as are so many other SPED children who have parents that care so friggen much that they won’t home school them. Instead of a “special” school for all these “retards” they let them disrupt the 98% of regular kids in school.

You’re being fuking selfish. You’re kid isn’t even learning. You think this kid in the 7th grade at NMS is on par with his classmates? Not even close. Take your kid out of school and give the other children a decent chance at learning. You’re going to be taking care of the little shit for the rest of your life anyway. The Northbridge school system has been insisting right along that they will be able to provide him with an education and the town of Northbridge will not pay for an alternative school. Do not blame the parents, his mother has tried to home school him but she works all day long and that didn’t pan out. He has Aspergers, he is not a normal student.

I don’t know the situation, but my guess is that the child is being licensed (if not encouraged) by the parent (I’m presuming only one, there usually is) to do whatever he damn well pleases because if he is obnoxious enough, the district will give up and pay for him to go where his mother wants him to go.

I once had a student who was screaming obscenities at everyone including the Superintendent, we (teachers) were all told not to observe this because it was all part of the ploy to get him outplaced.

Seems the incident, as not covered by the school, should be a reported assault to proper authorities. If I understand correctly, the victim has 7 years to do so in MA.
I’m not sure where anywhere, somebody can violate a law (assault) and not be prosecuted, IEP, or any other factor. That screwdriver could have permanently disabled the recipient of the blade.

“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.”
Another nice job, TurtleBoy. Keep being the good [people].
And the rest of the media will remain silent? I bet there are hundreds of stories our there.
Maybe start a blog just for schools called “SchoolBoy”. Is the internet big enough for that?
And does local MSM give a shit?
    Teachers do. Big time.

I am an Independent leaning right so I don’t care about the wall or not. I can protect myself from these fucking immigrants. What the Republicans need to do is start a new civil war. Not north vs south but Republicans vs Democrats. The Dem’s would be easy to beat because they are anti-gun. It would be weird fighting your neighbor but the Dem’s are throwing this country away. Dumb Fucks.

That’s actually not a bad idea. The suburban SJW ones will be easy, but fuk there’s a lotta Dem’s in the ghetto.

Another Nicholas Cruz in the making. Thank Obama for this. He’s the one who threatened civil right lawsuits against schools who disproportionately suspended or disciplined “at risk” students. Instead, hugs for thugs was the new policy. President Zero made all of us less safe.

Why wasn’t t the kid charged criminally? A B D W, lewd and lascivious, disorderly. That s a no brained! Resource Officer should of taken over. Oops, then the asshole Superintendent would have run him/her out too. What a track record she has…,,

I get that some kids hsve problems and need help butbthis is madness. The teacher could’ve been seriously hurt. What happens next time if the kid stabs someone in the heart ? Oh, it’s ok little Johnny, go over here and have a coke. Are you kidding me? First and foremost the Principal & Superintendent should be embarrased. They should be fired or resign. This vhild doesnt belong in a public school setting. He’s either going to hurt someone seriously or kill someone. What happens if he kills another student? The Town of Northbridge is playing russian roulette with public safety. The teacher should sue the hell out of the town & the school administrators. Shame on them. This politically correct, coddling of dangerous children needs to stop. If your child goes to Northbridge Middle School you should be scared, very scared. Unbelievable. And they fire the teacher ??? That’s lunacy. I hope he gets another job somewhere where he’s appreciated, the Administrators & Superintendent have a backbone & some common sense. Rant over.

    Couple of legal questions here:
    1) Can the assaulted teacher go to the police and press charges against the little psycho as a private citizen?
    2) How old does one have to be to be considered a sex offender? If guys whipping it out to piss against the wall in an alley have to register because some female walked by and saw his equipment, shouldn’t someone intentionally showing it off have to register?
    3) Can the parents of kids who were witnesses (and especially the kid who got kicked) demand info from the school?

This woman has been running people out for years now. Ask around there are plenty of people who will tell you how morally corrupt this person is.

Look into how many long time teachers, coaches, etc have been shown the door in Northbridge. Baseball and lacross coach last spring. AD before that, Principal before that. All long time employees, good people who were lied about and dragged through the mud because they represented something she and her minions despised.

HS Principal was run out too there is at least a couple more articles if you take a hard look.

She gave herself and her circle big raises and offers teachers and staff close to zero when contracts are negotiated.

Something like 20 new teachers at the HS because things are so bad with her.

Word is there are some lawsuits against the district.

Set up shop in front of the school and my guess is you’ll have people lined up to tell you how rotten and dishonest she is.

    TL;DR
Good teacher gets fired by admin that enables troubled students (making them behave worse) and public employees don’t really have the right to free speech.

    Great reporting, btw

Nope…this guy had no business working with volatile kids in a classroom with emotionally disturbed kids…..he is a wimp and should have taught social studies instead but i am guessing the only test he could pass was special education……

These school administrators are the absolute worst. Gee you think this moron might escalate his stupid behaviors seeing that there is never any consequences? So next time maybe someone dies?? Just make sure we don’t violate the terms of his iep. W t f. Schools should be split in half. One half is the kids who show up to learn. The other half for the kids who fuck it all up for the rest of em. Just lock em in a room with a cop for 8 hrs. I’m sure this kid is a future titan of industry. Feel for that poor victim, just trying to do the right thing and his job.

” My child plays fortnite until 3am please let him sleep it off until further notice. P.S. don’t mind the mood swings you should see the walls in our apartment.” Throw in some three letter magic EBT, and top it with low income. There’s your IEP. What a shame. Here’s hoping he finds better employment soon.

I smell lawsuit. Good luck. These administrators are all the types who go with the prevailing wind. If the wind changed tomorrow and the directive was to throw these kids out on their asses you can bet that’s what would happen. These kids are Fuckin savages. Wanna bet what the race of these little shuts are???

Parents shouldn’t need to be afraid to send their kids to school. We need more resources from Washington. Is this the reason I support school vouchers, or is this the reason I don’t support school vouchers?

I’m going to go get me a beer and try to figure it out.
