WCVBThere’s no dispute that Samuel Andrews’ answers on the eighth-grade grade science MCAS test were inappropriate.

“It was something to the effect of, ‘Make America Great Again’ and ‘Hillary Clinton should be in jail’ or something like that, basically a non-response,” his father Philip said.

But for some reason, the school read his answers before shipping them off, a violation of test protocol. No one expected what happened next.

“We headed down the trail and we got down towards the edge of the bogs and we saw him hanging from a tree on the edge of the bogs,” Andrews said. “I knew he was gone. He was cold. His lips were blue.”

Today, Andrews is consumed by what-ifs, as he points fingers at Hanson Middle School. The investigation into the 14-year-old’s suicide revealed more details, with one friend telling police Samuel said he was called an “embarrassment” by the school because of his answers and was then worried about getting into the high school of his choice. The father is outraged, that the school allegedly violated MCAS rules.

“No one is to read, review or change answers,” he said.

“Do you think this is what pushed him over the edge?” 5 Investigates’ Mike Beaudet asked him.

“I do,” he answered.

“That’s a violation of the test protocol,” said Monty Neill, executive director of the National Center for Fair & Open Testing.

In Hanson, the end result was tragic, though it’s part of an ongoing education department investigation. The superintendent of the Whitman-Hanson Regional School District declined to comment other than to say the school remains deeply saddened by Samuel’s death. The state’s Wulfson added, “I can tell you we were certainly heartsick to hear about that. Nobody wants to have a family to have to go through that.”

Samuel’s father blames the school.

“Had they done their job, this never would have happened,” he said.

Obviously this is a tragic situation and my heart breaks for the Dad. Couldn’t even imagine what that’s like to go through something this awful. But blaming this on the teachers is such a copout and patently unfair. If you want someone to blame for the pressure of high stakes testing, then blame asshole politicians who put so much value in high stakes testing. This man’s son obviously treated the MCAS test as a joke. But the teachers don’t have that luxury. Thanks to ridiculous laws created by people who have never spent a day in an actual public school, teachers and schools are now assessed on the test scores of their students.

So if this kid’s teacher spent the entire year getting this kid ready for the test (because her job is on the line and forces her to use this method that she fundamentally disagrees with), and then the kid treated it like a joke and bombed it, then I can understand why she’d be pissed off. Doesn’t matter for him. He gets to go onto the next grade no matter what. I totally get why a middle school kid would treat MCAS like a joke. It is a joke. But the teacher does not have that luxury.

willy-wonka-yolo-test

Ya know why these tests exist? Because assholes are obsessed with charts. They love it. They love to look at data and throw schools into one of four categories so they can justify their own existence. I’m not even exaggerating. The state employs thousands of people to administer, oversee, and correct these tests. Then they employ more people to analyze the data, make charts, and then assess schools based on those charts. And all because morons like this can vote:

screen-shot-2016-11-02-at-9-35-23-pm

No idiot, the MCAS is not supposed to test the teacher’s ability to teach. But it’s because ding-dongs like you believe this fallacy that teachers have all this stress on them. Then the students feel that stress and the next thing you know everyone hates going to school. People like Maria Larsen are the real reason this terrible tragedy happened.

Look, standardized testing is a waste of time. It costs the state millions of dollars that could be spent in the classroom. It creates jobs for people with no skills who like to wear suits and feel important. Truly terrible human beings with no sense of humor and no personality who live to create stupid questions that assess nothing. We never had to take MCAS and guess what? We all survived. We got into colleges and had normal high school experiences. Just get rid of it and go back to the good ol’ days where teachers taught to the kids in front of them instead of the tests that some asshole in Boston making six figures made for them.

The bottom line is people don’t commit suicide because the teacher said something “mean” to them. Anyone who possesses the ability to voluntarily taking their own life is suffering from deep rooted psychological issues. I get the father’s pain, but to blame this all on a teacher dishonors his son’s life. Blame politicians who think that it’s even remotely logical to

His father was called about the test that day as if he was in trouble. He was told he was an embarrassment to the school and a disgrace. Possibly threatened that his chances of going to vocational school were over. He suffered from suicidal ideation for many years. The school district was well aware of this. A guidance counselor who is in the middle of committing a crime should not be referring to any student as an embarrassment or disgrace.. particularly a child already suffering from mental health issues. The school district leveraged Samuel’s name and death just one day after his death and before his obituary was even posted in a plea for a budget increase via a district wide letter sent to the residents of Whitman and Hanson. Yet refuse to provide any information to his mother as to what happened in that guidance office on May 11, 2016. It has been said that this guidance counselor has been a problem for other students as well.

Terrible situation. It’s ridiculous that the dad is going to try to capitalize on it now because nobody ever knows who is to blame for a suicide. I will say one thing though….If the kid is writing “YOLO,” “Vote for Trump,” or “Hillary should be in jail” to intentionally fail a test he has been groomed to do well on since 3rd grade, then chances are he was a bit of a problem student who probably wasn’t spoken to on just this one occasion. Blaming the school just makes it look like your are in it to make money on the tragedy. Like I said, nobody knows why anyone commits suicide. You can’t point the finger at any one thing. The kid was obviously troubled. Should the parents be blamed for not picking up on it?

Standardized tests are useful in some ways and crap in others. Some kids can’t test, they just don’t do well even if they are smart. Others can deduce answers even though they don’t understand the material and can’t figure out how to open a can of food. (book smart, street dumb). We took tests as kids, but I don’t think they had any meaning, other than to show there might be some help needed. Like TB says, we should use these millions spent on testing and put it back into the classroom. Bring back Home Ec and other classes that actually teach kids how to function in society (my wife is still damn impressed I can bake a pie). Most can’t look at a bank statement and understand it, know why laws exist, cook to feed themselves, know anything about why we have the wonders of technology, what led to there need and why we should appreciate it. They sure as hell know how to pass the tests though because that is all they are taught. This kid stood up to the BS and then by his own choice, took his life in protest. Unfortunately it will probably lead to nothing but his parents suing and the school wasting money on lawyers whos kids go to private school.

I know several teachers that teach in a few different schools. They ALL review the MCAS tests before sending them in. Some even wander the room while the tests are happening and may suggest someone re-think an answer.
The true test of how effective the schools are is to look at the skills of the kids who are graduating. most cant do simple math or put a sentence together. There are many teachers in the system who have been in it way to long and they are burnt out. Unfortunately you cant easily get rid of them. get rid of the union and let teachers get hired or fired on how effective they are.

If you’re hired/fired at will, should one year of students that don’t click with you get you fired?

Seems it’s the perfect excuse to cut teacher’s after three years before they receive any sort of tenure and earn more pay.

This is a tragic situation. However, most problems begin at home, due to poor parenting. This may sound cold, but it is so true.

Don’t blame the school or the teacher because your kid gets off the bus and then sits in front of the tv for 6 hours straight playing fucking Xbox instead of studying. There should also be a physical fitness test that kids have to pass. I don’t want to hear parents say “No Johnny can’t do a sit up but he’s so special he can eat the fuck out of a box of Ring Dings!”.

Standardized tests are an important tool in measuring the effectiveness of our school curriculum. Don’t give me this shit like “Johnny doesn’t want to take the test because he’s special and he wants to be an artist”. If that’s so then good for him. He can play with crayons and finger paint all he wants at HOME until he’s 50 for all I care but at school he better show he’s progressing or get off the fucking bus and make room for a student that wants to learn.

As someone who sat through MR. KEARNEY’S “class” for a year, he’s far from it. He was pretty much the mockery of the History department, and he LOVED to jog around the school 24/7 in short shorts and no underwear. Hi Aidan, good to see that you’re still abusing your Adderall. There’s a reason you didn’t teach AP classes.

Has anyone considered that maybe, just maybe the test had absolutely nothing to do with why this kid killed himself? I’ve never heard of such a thing.

Turtleboy Sports should start an opt-out movement. That would put MCAS out of business.
