Danvers Stop & Shop Striker Calls Customer “EBT/Welfare Rat” On Facebook, Others Call Black Strikebreaker “Drug Dealer,” And “Crack Whore”

To read this blog on our ad free website TBDailyNews.com click here

As the Stop & Shop strike drags on it appears as if striking workers are hellbent on making themselves as unlikable as they can be. Here’s one from Danvers:

Oh good, they’re calling customers “EBT Welfare rats,” posting pictures of their license plates, and accusing them of “going after 2 young kids and their mother,” (whatever that means) without any evidence.

Here’s another post from a Facebook group called Stop & Shop Workers, taking pictures of a striking worker (who happens to be black), calling her a “crack whore,” saying that it’s “probably the first time she’s ever done any real work,” saying that she “looks like she can’t spell education,” and alleging that she’s a drug dealer who needs to “get back to her corner before she loses customers.”

It’s really simple if you want people to support your strike – just smile and and look pleasant. People are inclined to take the side of workers because they’re regular people, and it’s easy to shit on the big bad corporate villains who don’t live in our towns, don’t send their kids to our schools, and wipe their ass with $100 bills.

Instead they call customers welfare rats and make broad generalizations about strikebreakers, that quite frankly I have a hard time imagining they’d say if the strikebreakers were white. Don’t get me wrong, I hate scabs. They undermine strikes and they agree to work knowing that it’s only gonna last a couple weeks at most. Plus, what the hell is she wearing? They can’t even give these people aprons? All you have to do is just let them be, and if the scabs are as ratchet as you believe then film them doing ratchet things. Instead they do the opposite and they wonder why people keep crossing their picket line.

Did any employee actually say anything to a customer or is this a Facebook post only? I’m asking because it’s unclear in the article. It’s definitely not becoming to post nasty comments about customers, but I suspect this represents a very small portion of the employees. Unfortunately, a small percentage of people often impact opinions at large. I hope their Union reps have instructed them not to do that. For the most part, strikers are usually very peaceful. I watched the video of the Independent Journalist and some of their comments were asinine. The union sucks because they’ve been negotiating a contract since January? Contracts can take way longer than that and often do. For people saying this is low skill work and people are overpaid for it – not everyone can be an architect or a brain surgeon. Jobs like this exist for a reason and people need them to pay their bills and survive. There’s nothing wrong with working at a supermarket for 30 years. Is it wrong to harass customers? Yes. I also think it’s wrong to harass replacement workers who are also trying to make a living. I think it’s wrong and not helpful to the cause. I do think however, that this article was poorly written and meant to be inflammatory. I used to read TBS for the occasional comic relief but everything written is so extreme. This article, especially is not representative of all sides. Not pleased with this one at all.

According to Boston.com, these are the things the union is bitching about:

    1) The employees are being asked to contribute more to their health care costs. The new percentage they’d pay is in the middle single digits. The national average is around 20-25%

    2) Having their time and a half limited on Sundays in MA, now that it’s no longer law in MA that you gotta get paid time and a half on Sundays if you work on Sundays. Not gone away, mind you, but limited.

    3) Reducing accrued benefits in DEFINED BENEFITS plans for newer employees. Yes, you read that right – Stop and Shop actually offers its workers a defined benefits (i.e., a pension plan) plan, rather than a defined contributions (i.e., 401(k)) plan. Virtually nobody in the private sector offers a DB/pension plan anymore, as they are inherently economically unviable.

    Wow.

This stupid union is going to kill the cash cow if they keep it up. What a bunch of piggies at the dinner table.

I don’t want S&S to go belly up, because another vacant building in my city isn’t desirable, but I REALLY want these greedy, inconsiderate, clueless, entitled, self-important fuckwads to lose their jobs.

To the ones who got sucked into this strike, but really didn’t want to be a part of it, sorry. This is what happens. Lay down with dogs, come up with fleas.

S & S should change over to the ALDI and some PriceRites where you need to use a quarter to use a carriage. Bring the carriage back – get your quarter back. That will eliminate a couple of jobs as the carriage guy will have a lot less carriages to corral because most people will bring the carriage back for their quarter. Hundreds of stores and the elimination of 1 or 2 people adds up. Also those people can’t strike because they don’t work there.

Walmart let’s things get out of hand before they send someone out. But Walmart uses a motorized carriage pusher and the employee can push maybe 50 carriages at once.

Many people don’t realize how plastic revolutionized the bagging profession.
Suddenly phrases like “Paper or plastic” and “Would you like that double bagged ma’am?” became the expected norm from the position.
I saw some great baggers just have total break downs during the change, they literally lost their shit and were demoted to the shopping cart corral duties for the rest of their careers!

If you continued to work in a grocery store past high school, and have not advanced to management, you have failed. (Retirees working there to supplement their incomes are exempted.)

Sorry folks; 30 years as a cashier is not the “career” you might believe it to be. Performing menial tasks in a grocery store, while claiming to be a “professional,” is an Olympic-style leap. Get back to scanning my cans of corn, or go work at McDonalds. Either way, shut the fuck up about being “professionals.”

    • Crazy !! ;)
      April 18, 2019 at 8:21 am

I know these are two different stores but this is pretty crazy and I just figured I would share this with everyone. I have a friend who works at Home Depot. She had been working there for 16 years when they eliminated the job she once did, so instead of firing her or laying her off, they offered her another position, and her hourly wage would not change. She is now a cashier. And she makes 23$ a hour as a cashier. She says all the time she would be the biggest fool to leave that job. And she gets her raises just the same as everyone else does. So for someone who is a cashier she makes really really good money. Obviously that is not the same for everyone, but some people have worked at stop and shop for a long time and I’m willing to bet they are making a lot of money too just to scan a bag of potatoe chips!

HD can be a tough place to work. At couple of Augusts ago, I’m in the store to buy some paint. Felt like 90+ degrees inside. I asked the HD person what’s up with the temp?

She said the thermostats are run out of Atlanta via computer and the store doesn’t have any leeway in setting it themselves. Don’t know if that is really the case, but I wouldn’t be surprised. The electricity bill for air conditioning for every store must be enormous.

From Starship Troopers, the 1950s book that the movie was based on.

He had been droning along about “value,” comparing the Marxist theory with the orthodox “use” theory. Mr. Dubois had said, “Of course, the Marxian definition of value is ridiculous. All the work one cares to add will not turn a mud pie into an apple tart; it remains a mud pie, value zero. By corollary, unskillful work can easily subtract value; an untalented cook can turn wholesome dough and fresh green apples, valuable already, into an inedible mess, value zero. Conversely, a great chef can fashion of those sesame materials a confection of greater value than a commonplace apple tart, with no more effort than an ordinary cook uses to prepare an ordinary sweet.

Basically I read that as, “You scan items at a checkout. You stock shelves. You get wayward carriages. It is what it is but it isn’t rocket science.” Your perspective of value is not the same as others.

Right now unskillful work(ers) are easily subtracting value.

Unions are not needed for these types of jobs. If you were welders, sewer workers, miners, oil rig workers, jobs where there’s real and immediate risk, then I get what a union is for. But for grocery and food workers?!!!? Wtf. They’re easily replaceable.

Even nurses, X-ray techs and phlebotomists do not need a union. Their jobs are regulated by Board of Health Regulations and hundreds of laws.

It doesn’t matter what the store grosses. That’s the most stupid, fucked up argument that keeps getting repeated. If they had revenue of 15,000,000,000 and a loss of 2,000,000,000 and the guy with the convenience store had revenue of 2,000,000 and a profit of 100,000 who had the better year?

You’d say the 15,000,000,000 because bigger and that’s not how it works. What is the percent of profit compared to others in the same industry? That’s the only thing that counts. The amount of money is meaningless. The grocery store game is not a high margin business.

Okay ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ you got me I’m bitter because I flopped out of the Unions Grocery Bagging Boot Camp. I was super careful and always put heavy items on the bottom of the bag. Bread in it’s own bag separate from half gallons of milk. I was very quick and always polite to customers shit I was even very happy doing the work.

Unfortunately the Union told me I have to be a miserable cocksucker who’s awful to the customers and I shouldn’t care about the quality of my work. They also told me to slow down I was making the other employees look bad. Not to mention I was also working fast enough for Stop and Shop to make a profit and the Union couldn’t have that because they’ll never see any of that profit. They also specifically mentioned a policy against Honest Work for a Honest days pay.

I had to go back to my Non-Union Highly skilled job. This obviously wasn’t going to work out for me.

      April 18, 2019 at 9:02 am

Okay not that this is anyone’s business but I’m gonna say what I feel I need to, whether or not anyone likes it. My brother works at stop and shop as a bagger. He is 35 years old and is mentally disabled his IQ is 69. And he is also in wheelchair. He receives social security disability and does not need to work but he does because he enjoys being part of the community and despite his disability’s he is a very hard worker. He is not a apprentice, he is a bagger. He also rings on a ten items or less register. My brother loves his job and loves to go to work as much as he can. He keeps to himself but he hears everything since most people think because he is disable he is just plain dumb. They just recently fired a girl for stealing 1,165.00 from her cash draw. Another one stole all the pocket books from the break room. They do not do extensive back round checks on these people they hire or drug test so right there you should know your gonna get the best of the best. And yes this was told to me by a young man who has mental disability. 90 percent of the people who work there are very rude and don’t deserve to get more of anything at all. What they do need is to learn to treat people with the respect that they deserve. And the people who are shaming others and belittling them should lose their jobs. The last thing they belong doing is working with the public treating them in that manner. Nobody should be discussing how customers pay while on that strike line. Stick to your issues, what you are fighting for. Your wants and needs and shut up. If your still a apprentice bagger while my MR brother has long since been one, I think your doing something wrong… just saying

I can see what Stop and Shop has issues as a company. The company leadership is a joke. Have you ever seen employees on strike and allowed to literally form a line across entry ways and doors to wnter the business? No you probably haven’t because its private property and if you’re striking you go to the curb. For some reason stop and shop is allowing these strikers to camp out at their doors effectively making it impossible for regular people to shop even if they wanted to. Imagine all pf the loss from spoilage and lost sales, people should be fired for this, they obviously are over their heads. I don’t need to see anything else, they have mucked this up so bad, i can’t imagine anything is being done correctly.

After 6 years of working there I RETIRED at the age of 17 making $1.9 million an hour.
I’ve been living off of my full pension since then and build time travel machines in my basement for fun!

That’s a real nice story, loser.
I was 4 days old and I started working at MIT as a rocket baby and I retired at 4 months old with an unlimited amount pension with an anything I want benefit package. I’ve been retired for 4 years now and spend my days watching Paw Patrol on my 300 inch tv, drinking champagne juice boxes and eating caviar roll-ups !!
I also have a Swedish nanny to do my bidding and play Hungry Hungry Hippos anytime I want.

The day that I allow a fucking stockboy/carriage bitch to call me or my wife some derogatory name for buying food, and walk away like nothing happened, is the day that you can put me in the ground.

Fuck that bullshit, and fuck these bullying pieces of shit.

Having spent 7 painful months on the National Grid lockout lines, I can assure you:
    (1) It was humiliating
    (2) We were instructed NOT to engage customers. Replacement workers, other union members crossing and management were our targets only.
    But most importantly>
    (3) There is a certain type of person that LOVES this environment. They go absolutely berserk because they are already harboring borderline personality disorders, and think they won’t be held accountable/feel repercussions. It was quite enlightening watching the violent changes in some people.

I’m shopping at the Danvers store tomorrow, doing the Conor McGregor walk the whole way through.

Okay enough is enough, these people who have decided to work at stop and shop. Now they are protesting, okay. They have no right to be screaming shit at people or making statements about who is on EBT. They can strike all day everyday but there is no reason to be doing the stuff they are doing. And they shouldn’t be allowed to return as employees ever again.

Im getting sick of this Bullshit. I’m all for the stop and shop workers but you fukn assholes are crossing the line. You don’t know what people are going thru. Peoplr are to scared to walk in the store because there chasing people down and yelling at them. I watched a stop and shop worker chase an old man down the parking lot and yell at him. All you rude fuks that go back to work in a couple days/weeks don’t be mad when us customers give you fukn attitudes when you do see us. Your grown ass adults acting like little fukn kids. Take into consideration people’s lives. People don’t have transportation, people have kids and dont have the means to go to the opposite side of town, people have to shop for other people sometimes. You guys dont know peoples situations and your rude and fukn ignorant. I seen a post (dont know how true it is) but somebody slipped in syrup that an employee dumped on purpose and now theres a fukn lawsuit. Did ya ever think of all the money loss impact you guys are going to take when you do return.? Or how many customers your losing because your assholes. Have a picket line all you want but leave people the fuk alone for Christ sake.

Maybe we all know that behind our smiles and “How ya doin’?”s we are all a bunch of dingleberrys to one degree or another. But because we don’t get to see beyond that we assume the best. These stupid fucking shit heads like Sandy K Mattern and the rest decide to show what’s behind that. Most of us attempt to hide that side of ourselves from others because we know that isn’t a good look and really isn’t a good way to go through life.

Sandy and the rest, don’t go into public relations. I don’t think you have a gift for it. Makes you wonder if you should buy anything from the deli department after this is over. Wouldn’t put it past them to add some secret sauce to the product when you buy something.

So, go ahead and strike comrade. I figure with your bitching about your non-competitive wages (which for your industry are competitive) in about another week or so, whatever contract you sign will never make up for the hours you lost striking. This isn’t a fucking coal mine and you people are striking because of black lung disease.

If the worker are going to picket they should have to stand at the entrance of the parking lot. Not at the front door. I’m not a fan of s&s but I won’t go if it’s all self checkouts. I don’t go shopping to work.

Yeah, I don’t get that either. The only possibility is S & S is leasing the space and doesn’t own the property. Which may make the side walk fair game if the property owner doesn’t care.

At the Westfield MA. store, the store is the only thing on the lot. I saw strikers on the side walk and I swear by the entrances. It was closed except for the pharmacy and the bank.

Striking stop-n-shop employees have convinced me their stores suck ass.

I won’t cross the picket line now or patronize their shitty stores when it’s over, fuck em!

Fairly certain the attractive woman who just spent a couple hundred bucks in S-S won’t be back either. This blow-hard union are punk stalkers and criminals.

Let’s abuse and harass the remaining customers, check.
Shit all over our employer, check.
Tell the world our company/stores suck, check.
Demand more benefits and pay, check.

Then when it’s all over we’ll be victorious and expect our employer and customers to forget everything we said during the strike and rush back. Spending their money at the grocery stores that we told everyone sucked and are run by management we called greedy, scabs, foreigners, corporate bastards…. good luck with that.

Moron, it’s a multinational billion dollar corporation. You’re that naive you think it’s a Mom & Pop store where one or two white trash not showing up and “taking their business elsewhere” would actually effect anything. Dumbass.

So will any of these employees face termination for their racist social media comments after they go back to work. I hope someone is capturing these posts and sends them to S&S after the strike ends. These people should be fired as they are a bad reflection on the store brand. Hopefully these racist assholes get what they deserve.
