Somehow the Spencer-East Brookfield Regional School District, and David Prouty High School in particular, manage to become a bigger circus on a daily basis. If you haven’t read our expose on this nightmare, here’s the link

Last month we wrote about the ceilings falling all over the place at David Prouty:

A normal school district where kids are the priority would do something to address this MAJOR problem. But SEBRSD is not a normal school district, and children are certainly not a priority under the current administration, so nothing has been fixed.

Anyway, today was really cold and the building is not property maintained and is pretty old, so the pipes burst. As a result there was mass flooding in the classrooms, no heat, and asbestos tiles were falling from the ceiling like hot cakes:

This is happening in a school in the United States of America. Un. Freaking. Believable.

Here’s what one student shared with us:

I came into school today to find that my classroom was flooded. No one told me, there were no announcements, I just went to walk in and there were ceiling tiles all over the floor. Visible asbestos mold was scattered everywhere. Pipes were dripping and there was water flooding the ground. My teacher had set up in the classroom next to hers and yet was still having trouble breathing. She was not able to retrieve her books for our class due to the terrible air quality. About twenty minutes later, she walked out into the hall to find that the janitor was just vacuuming the asbestos up with an every day vacuum cleaner. We then were told that 6 classrooms altogether were flooded including the one we usually meet in. We were moved to the library along with some other classes and my teacher told us to call our parents to dismiss us due to the unsafe conditions. When my mom called the school to ask what was happening, they lied and told her that there was a small problem that would be completely taken care of soon, and that we were moved to a room different than the one we were actually in. My teacher was kind enough to actually talk to my mom on the phone and tell her how bad things actually were…. When my mom came to pick me up, she attempted to go over and talk to the superintendent to try and convince her to let the teachers go home as well as the students, the blue house made it clear that asbestos covering the floor and infecting the air was not a valid enough reason for them to let people leave. Now that the board of health received pictures of the damage, everyone is being dismissed… The fact that things are so bad yet the school tries to use a band-aid to fix shattered glass is unbelievable. (This is a metaphor, but at David Prouty, this probably is considered a good repair method). The teachers do not get paid enough for what they go through and they are literally the only thing holding our school together.

INSANE!!!

Here’s another anecdote:

My kindergartner is home today – sees the pictures and asks where is that?  I respond – the high school that we drive by every day.  She responds – yuck – please don’t make me go to that school – it’s gross there. Yup – even the 5 year olds know that it shouldn’t be like that!!!

According to several sources the plan was to tough it out. Kids were told to get blankets and coats from their lockers and huddle close together. In  the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!!!

Guess what the best part is? Superintendent Dr. Nadine Tracy Crowe and interim principal Dr. Patricia Jordan aren’t there today. Ya got that? They’re both at a conference in Arizona, the day before a vacation on the coldest day of the year. Who’s paying for that? Who’s paying for their vacation to the warmest state in the country on the coldest day of the year? Might as well fly to Arizona for a conference the week before February vacation. It’s not like there are any problems in Spencer that need to be dealt with. Priorities people, priorities.

This is a video of Tracy Crowe testifying in front of the Board of Selectman on January 25, 2016. She speaks from about 7:00-12:00 and it will make you wanna kill yourself:

According to her, the district is “more fiscally responsible” since they were before she came on. And the GUTLESS selectmen just sat there and kissed her ass. What’s up with those chumps? Hey geniuses, do your job. Does ANYONE in this district actually care about the kids? Anyone?

His name is Monette. Pretty sure he played fullback for Prouty back in the 90’s when it was a real school. I don’t even know what his first name is. Doesn’t matter. He’s running for Kevin Hayes’ seat. Anyone who doesn’t vote for him hates children. It’s undeniable. Make sure to like his Facebook page to keep up with his updates.

Editor’s note: Turns out his name is Jason. Vote for Jason Monette:

A Turtleboy reporter called the SEBRSD office for more details about this. As soon as we told them we were press the woman on the phone said, “no comment” and hung up on us. Shocking.

It’s obviously not a surprise that they wouldn’t talk to us. After all, covering things up and not answering questions is what they are most known for. After the parents and students showed up en masse to a School Committee meeting and had the audacity to ask why they had to use textbooks like this:

12272956_1646243355631321_929007814_n

They were shutdown by School Committee chairman Kevin Hayes, and told that this elected body didn’t have to answer to the taxpayers:

Oh yea, and then in November and into December the principal of David Prouty, Eileen Belastock, just disappeared. Not a single email or phone call was sent home to home parents. Nothing. The principal has never been heard from since and no announcement has been made on her return. Ya got that? The freaking principal just up and disappeared and the superintendent has NOTHING to say about it!!! This is bizarro world people!!

Soon after that she was replaced by interim principal, “Dr” Pactricia Jordan, a good friend of Tracy Crowe. Dr. Jordan was hired by Melinda Boone to be principal of Jacob Hiatt Elementary School in Worcester a few years ago, and last year was promptly FIRED by Boone because of her gross incompetence. Parents from Jacob Hiatt tell us that Dr. Jordan was an unmitigated disaster and was AWFUL with children. Naturally then she was the ideal candidate to become principal at a troubled and underfunded regional high school.

Since taking over as principal it has been one disaster after another for Patricia Jordan. She has brought in scabs to replace the two beloved teachers who are “under investigation” for misallocated money that a law firm has proven they had nothing to do with. She has left threatening and harassing notes for faculty, including threats to tow their cars if they don’t show their placards. Kids HATE her.

The bottom line is that these people must go. I mean, what are we waiting for here? We gonna wait for someone to die? Teachers can’t breath. Kids can’t breathe. Asbestos is falling from the ceiling. The classrooms are skating rinks. Just look at how cold the windows were today:

My question is, what the hell are State Representative Donald Berthiaume and State Senator Anne Gobi gonna do about it? Because it’s more clear than ever at this point that administration in SEBRSD is acting recklessly and I would even say criminally, and they have no intention of stopping. They are endangering children!!!! Hey Berthiaume and Gobi – do something. This is embarrassing. You should be ashamed that the town you represent when you go to Beacon Hill is the laughingstock of the commonwealth. And you’re just cool with it? You’re just cool with Tracy Crowe and Kevin Hayes allowing this? You’re just cool with them flying to Arizona, and taking trips to China, and getting new office furniture, and spending over $100,000 to see if the show choir director had a piece of pizza, and not answering to the public, and not providing textbooks, and not having a student council, and throwing principals in a ditch somewhere? It’s OK that this is how they are spending money that primarily comes from the Statehouse where you go to work every day? What kind of elected officials are you? Do your freaking job or Turtleboy is gonna have no choice then to make sure you don’t get reelected next time around. You don’t wanna poke the turtle. We’re not gentle like the Telegram and we don’t sweep crap like this under the rug.

Here’s their contact information:

Anne Gobi: 617-722-1540, anne.gobi@masenate.gov

Donald Berthiaume: 617-722-2090, Donald.Berthiaume@mahouse.gov

If you live in Spencer or East Brookfield, or anywhere really, please take 5 minutes out of your Friday to send them a message that they MUST get rid of Tracy Crowe, and the MUST investigate the corruption that is happening in this school district. Kevin Hayes should be in jail, which is fitting because he wouldn’t be the first in his clan to end up in the can.

Has anyone asked for a copy of the AHERA report? Schools must have a copy on hand at the school for such situations as this one. Cleaning up an asbestos exposure is much more extensive then most think.

They closed lake street school last year because of unhealthy air. If these conditions are acceptable at Prouty, how bad were things at lake street? Seems like the town is leaving itself open to potential lawsuits by not taking care of these issues at Prouty. The bottom line is we need to bite he bullet and take care of this building until we can build a new school. However, not with Kevin Hayes and “dr” Tracy Crowe at the helm. Vinnie is on the out, Kevin to follow. Jason Monette and Dale Wilder for school commitee!

That school should be condemned. The potential or rather actual health hazards both short and long term to everyone in that building is NOT worth the risks. Where is common sense with regard to this?

So is there any confirmation that the ceiling tiles are in fact, made from asbestos? They look like pretty standard ceiling tiles to me. Based on the age of the building I would assume they could certainly be asbestos, but there’s no way to absolutely know, and trusting a ranting 16 year old to identify asbestos is a stretch. This sort of shit happened in the old Auburn High School almost weekly back in the day and they thought nothing of it. A trash bucket would sit in the hallway and collect water until it was full, then they’d push it to the janitors closet and pour it into the mop sink. The ceiling tile would be replaced the next day. To be fair, limited exposure to asbestos isn’t going to kill someone. Prolonged exposure, like the kind a contractor who works with it daily would’ve had, would give you cancer for sure.

From what I’ve been told, there are tiles that aren’t made from asbestos. Those are the ones that got replaces because the old ones get wet and fall out. The ones made from asbestos also have a certain pattern, so you can tell which ones are which. Of course, that could all be a load of crap

Asbestos or not, with all of that water damage, black mold is probably growing throughout the walls and heating systems. Whether or not the tiles are made from asbestos is really beside the point. It’s a health hazard any way you look at it and children who go to school to learn should have every opportunity to do so. Dodging falling ceiling tiles and nasty brown water is not conducive to learning!

We had to go there while our high school was being built. The building was a disaster then, and that was in the 70’s.

That’s a serious health hazard. Ask anyone in the construction industry.

in the T and G article they are saying that someone vandilized the heating system. they can’t take responsibility for not keeping up with repairs. it’s beyond sad.
then of course crowe and jordan aren’t there—no big surprise there!
