Why do liberal people in Worcester like City Manager Ed Augustus so much? One of the primary tenets of liberalism is protection of the environment. Conservatives are the ones who are supposed to pave paradise and put up a parking lot, not liberals. But since being handed the job by his buddies on the City Council, Fast Eddy has tried to sell the Chandler ballfields to Worcester State University, and a few acres of Newton Hill to the Worcester Tennis Club. His latest anti-environment scheme is to take some preserved land at Green Hill Park and turn it into a for-profit driving range that will sit adjacent to the golf course.

Why does Ed Augustus hate trees so much? Why does he keep getting a free pass form so called liberal people?

Green Hill Park is such an underrated part of Worcester. I LOVE Green Hill. There are hundreds of acres of walking trails on either side of Worcester Tech high school.

You can walk from where Plantation Street and 290 intersect all the way to East Park on Shrewsbury Street and only cross ONE STREET (Belmont). That’s amazing in a city this size.

It’s also home to the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial and there’s tons of free goats you can pet. It’s a hidden gem in Worcester that we take for granted. And under no circumstances should we EVER allow any of it to be taken away so a bunch of suits can wack some balls around.

This is a park that’s lost a lot of trees in the last couple of years to that Goddamn Asian beetle. Thanks Nortons!! When you’re driving on 290 and you cross Lincoln Street it’s scary to look at how many trees are now gone because of that stupid bug. How many more are we willing to lose? Is Turtleboy going full-fledged hippie? Yes, for now. This is a hippie cause we gladly champion. You cannot give away a single acre because it doesn’t come back. If Teddy Roosevelt were alive he’d come down to Worcester and give Ed Augustus an atomic wedgie.

Whatever the ideas are. I just don’t trust the city rulers.

Do you know that you cannot just reference other articles and provide false information. Is that why you have your own blog and not a professional journalism career? Learn how to do things the RIGHT way before you go and bash everyone. Why doesn’t Turtleboy go and run for office? Oh thats right, because he’s just one to talk. That’s all

    And one more thing,
” And under no circumstances should we EVER allow any of it to be taken away so a bunch of suits can wack some balls around.”

The suits don’t play Green Hill, that’s the city’s blue-collar course. The lower suits play Tatnuck and the uppers are at Worcester Country Club. So, this driving range would be for us. Thanks for taking something away from the people you claim to fight for.

Suit or no suit – golf is golf. No one wants to take away what is there now at the golf course (YET that is), BUT there are those that would take away MORE park land to play golf and THAT is the argument. No land taking to play more golf – NO.

No land is being taken away. The driving range would be built on the current course. The plan actually adds 17 acres to the park. Read the T&G article TB referenced instead of listening to his twisted take on what he thinks it says.

Alrighty – for once – you and I agree – great article and I love the Roosevelt line especially. LOVE GREEN – Honor Andrew!

    From the T&G article:
“The plan involves a proposed amendment to the conservation restriction for Green Hill Park that would end up increasing the park’s protected area from about 487 acres to 504 acres.

The amendment, recommended by City Manager Edward M. Augustus Jr. to the City Council, calls for removing two parcels from the conservation restriction, while adding five others to it.”
“He added that the new driving range will be creatively installed within existing holes of the golf course.”

    So, you said that:
“His latest anti-environment scheme is to take some preserved land at Green Hill Park and turn it into a for-profit driving range that will sit adjacent to the golf course.”

Which is false according to the very article you referenced. His plan would actually add 17 acres to the park and, because the planned driving range would be added to the existing golf course grounds, would not involve altering the remainder of the park.

So, did you have any other “hard facts” to this or are you just blindly going against Ed cause… reasons?

Why not just add the acres and scratch the driving range? In all honesty, golf is a fast dying market, let’s be real about this. How much money will it actually bring in? The project, regardless of how you view it, favorably or unfavorably, may cost more than will be gotten out of it.

I believe the course is one of the only things that generates revenue for the park. And with the increase on cost of running the course and the park as a whole, they need something to help so they don’t have to move money from other sections of the city. Though I have yet to see the actual proposal, it sounds like a win-win. The course gets something to generate more income for the park, the park itself increases in size. Only actual negative I’ve heard was on the TBS facebook page by the “heir” to the park (which is a title I’m sure the guy made up). He said there could be endangered species or a potential historic site on the parcel they would move out of the conservation. Again, without seeing the proposal we don’t know if it was already looked at or if the parcel will actually be developed on at all. Like the article said, they plan on the range to be built on the existing course, not on the new land.

Usually a cost study is included with proposals. We’ll se on Tuesday if one was done.

          I’m just being practical.

Maybe I pissed one person off that I said golf is dying, but it’s true. Father is an avid golfer and he knows it. Which is my point, I agree the plan looks nice, but I honestly don’t think a driving range will generate much.

I play green hill nearly every weekend. The reason? It’s very affordable. I’m not young and I’m not wealthy. Bad examples too as Green Hill GC is owned by the City. Has been since the 30’s I believe. Worcester Tennis Club and Worcester State College are not. So in other words you want them to not cut down trees that are on land they own. Just because you so love trees. Got it.
