So tomorrow is election day in Worcester, and it’s been a real shitshow around here because of City Councilor Michael Gaffney’s theatrics. As you know, we’ve been a huge supporter of Councilor Gaffney, and he’s done a lot of positive work for the community by acting as the voice of the people. He led the charge against the fraudulent non-profit Mosaic Cultural Complex and has bee a voice for the taxpayers. But with that said, he’s clearly  not the same person he was two year ago when we elected him, and for that reason we can’t in good faith suggest that anyone should vote for him. There are no sacred cows at Turtleboy Sports, and we’re not afraid to criticize anyone and tell you what we’re really thinking. If we were to play along with this it would hurt our credibility. you come here for honest takes and that’s exactly what we’re giving you here.

Three weeks ago Gaffney announced that he would no longer be seeking office, but both he and his wife Coreen’s name would appear on the ballot. And the way they did it really annoyed the shit out of me:

This morning, we received very good news concerning an opportunity that we intend to pursue. It has been years in the making and we are so happy at our good fortune, but our celebration is dampened as we will no longer have the time needed to devote to city council. Our new endeavors will result in significant time away from the area and will not allow us to focus on the demands of city council. Therefore, we have made the decision to withdraw from our respective campaigns. It is our understanding that our names will remain on the ballot, but as we cannot fulfill the obligations of the office it would not be prudent to cast a vote for either of us.

So he tells people right there, don’t vote for us, even though our names are on the ballot. He doesn’t say what this opportunity is he is pursuing, but odds are he’s skipping town.

We have appreciated the support we have received from so many. As the second highest vote-getter last cycle, we’ve enjoyed the overwhelming support of the good people of Worcester. Every campaign that we have helped manage has been successful. In just four years, we have really shaped the politics in Worcester and Worcester County.

Be douchier on the way out. You can’t. No one gives a shit that you got second place last time. It’s useless if you’re not gonna be the voice of the people on the council. No one cares how many successful campaigns you managed. Get over yourself. The city needs your leadership, people counted on you, and you’re leaving them out to dry. There’s no other way to look at this. Sure, you’re a private citizen and can do whatever you want. But you led a lot of people on who rallied behind you.

“As to our future endeavors, we’d love to disclose. Unfortunately, the local hate groups and media make it unwise for us to reveal our plans.”

See this is the theatrics that I hate. You can’t “reveal your plans” because of local hate groups? Dude, you’re not in the witness protection program. You’re not nearly that important. You’re only relevant because you’re on the City Council. That’s why they hate you. Because you do great work on the Council. The second you leave you become just another Internet commenter yahoo and they’re no longer gonna hate you as much. Worcester didn’t need another Turtleboy flapping his gums on Facebook. We needed a more refined, smart, resourceful person to be our voice in the city’s government.

And that right there is the problem. Gaffney wasn’t like this two years ago. He was quiet and reserved. He spoke when it was his turn to speak. It was great because he wasn’t like us. He wore a suit, ran a successful law firm, and didn’t have to use the foul language we do to make his point.

But somewhere along the way this went to his head. He started to turn into Turtleboy. It began with the cringeworthy “Cheers” videos, in which he mixes drinks and talks shit. Except the whole thing is just……awkward.

Like the episode about how he was elected top city councilor:

Or when he literally recites mean things random nobodies said about him on the Internet.

It’s one thing when we do this. We’re Turtleboy. But he’s a city councilor. We don’t need him to do this. We’ve told him several times that these videos suck. I’ve literally never met a supporter of his that thought they were anything accept uncomfortable. Once again, he didn’t have to do this. He had our support already. He gained nothing from making these, and ultimately just turned people off who might’ve been on the fence.

And here’s the fact of the matter – he abandoned what he started. He was in office for two years, he led us to believe that he was leading some sort of revolution against the machine, he didn’t have the patience to wait it out, and he’s so sensitive to any sort of criticism that it was clear after a while that he’s just not cut out for politics. We shit on Joe Petty and company CONSTANTLY. You see them going anywhere? Nope.

But yet he was still actively encouraging people to vote for him on Facebook:

Because he simply couldn’t stand the thought of someone who was actually STAYING in the race saying mean things about him:

And after he announced that he was abandoning his supporters he simply could not stomach the fact that the terrible people he had gone to battle with for the last two years were “declaring victory”:

But guess what? They won. You quit. When I saw this shit I wanted to puke. He’s moving on to greater opportunities. Congrats. Meanwhle all the people stuck in Worcester now have an echo chamber of a City Council. No one cares about your “greater opportunities.” It’s not about you. And declaring war on these people now as nothing more than an Internet yahoo is useless.

Nevertheless we were still urging people to vote for him, simply as a protest vote. As disappointed as many of his supporters are, we can’t stand the people he fights against even more. And the thought of them losing to a guy who wasn’t even running was something we were dying to see. And make no doubt about it – he could’ve won.

But then he completely lost his mind this week and we just can’t support this train wreck anymore. It started when he found out about a flier in the mail that the Worcester Democratic City Committee was sending out to registered voters.

On one side it was his quote urging people NOT to vote for him:

Which I totally get. Gaffney had made it clear through his posts that he still wanted people to vote for him, which directly contradicted what he said in his press release. His name was still on the ballot. I’d estimate that over 50% of voters had no idea he said he didn’t want their vote. The WDCC obviously just wanted to make it clear to people who were inclined to vote for him that he did not want them to do so.

On the other side it listed who the WDCC wanted you to vote for INSTEAD OF Gaffney:

As you can see it clearly says WDCC in the return address, and “paid for and authorized by the WDCC” at the bottom. Couldn’t possibly be any clearer who the “we” in “we ask you to vote for these candidates” was referring to – the WDCC.

But somehow Gaffney found a way to victimize himself with this and completely went off the deep end:

“Perpetrators?”

Like they committed a crime.

“Disgusting lie?”

There wasn’t a single lie in this flier. They were his exact words. “We” clearly referred to the people who sent the flier out, not Gaffney himself.

“Reprehensible behavior?”

Dude, you make Cheers videos and roast the other councilors all the time. Don’t get me wrong, I like when you roast some of these people and it’s deserved. But, pot meet kettle.

Most importantly, only an insane person would truly believe that the WDCC was insinuating that Gaffney was endorsing these people. Seriously, Gaffney support Sarai Rivera, Joe Petty, and Candy Carlson (the head of the WDCC who sent out the mailer)? Who would ever think he would endorse any of these people? Oh yea, nobody. Gaffney was just looking for a way to victimize himself and cause a scene because he just can’t resist staying out of this election.

We told him, as we did with the Cheers videos, that this was a terrible look. He decided he wasn’t going to listen to us, despite all the really good advice we’ve given to him in the past. Because of our strong support last election he went from 6th to 2nd. But what the hell did we know? And other supporters, like former state representative candidate Carol Claros, started getting blocked by him on Facebook when she wasn’t saying nice enough things about him:

I talked to a lot of Gaffney supporters. Not a single one of them took this flier the way he did. It was universal – he was victimizing himself. But he’s not trying to hear any sort of dissent, even for people who were still inclined to vote for him.

Oh, and he also said that he still wants people to vote for him (even though he said two weeks ago he doesn’t), but if he wins he won’t be able to go to most meetings:

The most shocking portion of the release, however, was the Gaffneys announcement that they would indeed hold office if elected on Tuesday in Worcester’s municipal election.

“Be advised, should the good people of Worcester choose to elect either of us, we will serve out our term to the best of our ability as we refuse to let this crew of despicable liars engage in this type of behavior,“ Gaffney said in a release.

Gaffney told ThisWeekinWorcester.com on Thursday evening that he will not take a salary or benefits from the city and will “serve for free” if they are elected.

“I will not be able to attend the majority of meetings, but will attend budget and tax rate classification,” Gaffney added.

Wait…..what?? Is this a joke? So basically what he’s doing here is setting himself up to be the savior. He pulled out because he wanted people to beg him to run. He found an insane way to victimize himself and used it as a way to come back into the race at the last second. He knows he already had the votes and would get in, and that way he could make it seem like he’d go to meetings every now and then because we begged him to stay by voting him in when he said he didn’t want to be voted in. And he’d do it all without a salary, because he’s just super amazing like that.

Finally we reached out breaking point yesterday when he posted this and started race baiting:

This is a Peabody elected official saying her opponent, “has no place here.” Her opponent is black, and the post he shared insinuated this was a racist comment. It obviously wasn’t, and this is the type of shit we’re supposed to be fighting AGAINST. So Clarence Woods Emerson left a comment that disagreed with his assertion and it was promptly deleted:

Up until this point we were still gonna urge people to vote for him, but how can we now? This is what we criticize SJWs for – censoring speech they disagree with. It’s the most important thing we fight against. And he did it to Turtleboy of all people. The media outlet that’s supported him through thick and thin while all the other MSM rags shit all over him. It was clear as day that he only supported us when we had great things to say about him. The second we disagreed with him publicly we got censored and treated like the rest of the assholes who criticize him relentlessly. And we can’t in good faith support someone like this.

Tomorrow the most important thing Worcester voters can do is keep Dante Comparetto off the School Committee. I’m not a big fan of John Monfredo but you gotta vote for him. Brian O’Connell and Jack Foley are safe. But Dante has raised $45,000 to run  his campaign, more than the other six candidate combined. Weird, because as was pointed out by This Week In Worcester, he donated $28,000 of his own money, despite being an unemployed loser who claims to run a business that doesn’t really exist. So make sure you vote for Molly McCullough, John Monfredo, Diana Biancheria, and especially Donna Colorio.

As for City Council the goal is simple – get Konnie Lukes and Gary Rosen as high as they can get. Rosen helped us out with the Mosaic stuff and has publicly acknowledged the blog several times. Konnie is like Gaffney except with tact and a filter. Oh, and vote for our man Davis Asare if you live in District 3, and Paul Franco if you live in District 5 as well.

Mike Gaffney is not the same person he was two years ago. It’s all gone to his head, and that’s tragic because he really was the voice of the people. Now he’s the voice for himself. But we are forever grateful for the great work he did and the support he showed to the blog. Sucks that it has to end like this. Sad.

Based on TurtleFucker’s butt-hurt feelings toward Gaffney, you have to wonder if TurtleFucker was hoping for some “favors” from Gaffney and the City Council? Now that his golden boy is gone, he’s wondering where he can a little graft from!!!

we were on fence about Gaffney but he is too self absorbed even for a protest vote so the word went out, no Gaffney. About a dozen or so votes. Novick wa s a much more concerted effort. No Gaffney.

Roger Nugent INSISTED Worcester teachers vote Dante. Wouldn’t hear any opinions on others, just wanted to spew his agenda. I don’t think a lot of people are aware of what a L7 weenie Dante is and are being told by the union to vote for him.

The conspiracy theorist in me makes me wonder if someone put him up to this? Like nefarious members from the McGovern crime family, Antifa, the former Mosaic Cultural Complex, or any political opponent might have told him privately (and anonymously) to stop running for office or there’s going to be a serious “problem” for him and his family. Much in the same way SJW’s threaten the livelihood of people they don’t agree with to shut them up.

Can’t forget that he teamed up with a friend of his, who happened to be involved in city government, to fabricate a sex scandal that could have potentially ruined someone’s career. Yes, that person who’s career would’ve been ruined kinda sucks, but at least ruin their career for something they actually did.

I disagree with your take here for one reason only. Having Gaffney absent from meetings and a non-factor is still probably better than the alternative. That said, the smart play would have been to win the election (or both with Coreen) take the seats, and then vacate them shortly into office. Pretty sure that would cause a run-off election, though I would have to look at the bylaws to be sure.

Bailing just before the election is certainly a dick move, but I never gave Gaffney that much credit anyway. At least if he won a seat, the option to vacate and possibility for a better councilor would still be on the table.

    • Chris
      November 6, 2017 at 4:27 pm

As far as Mrs. Gaffney winning D4, if she declined to be sworn-in, Sarai Rivera becomes the councilor anyhow because she is the 2nd-place finisher. If Mike Gaffney wins and he decided not to be sworn-in or resigned mid-term, the next in line gets seated. This happened when Mayor Tim Murray resigned to become Lt. Governor, Konnie Lukes became Mayor because she was the 2nd-place finisher in the previous election, and 7th-place finisher filled the vacancy.

I’m not sure if D4 can produce a quality councilor (Janice Nadeau and Barbara Haller won’t be walking through that door), but if Mrs. Gaffney wins and is sworn-in, it would be better-off in this case playing hooky than having someone who claims to be a minister talking about private parts representing D4. If Mrs. Gaffney is sworn-in and decides to quit a 2 couple months later, a special election will be scheduled.

      • Benjamin D Champagne
        November 6, 2017 at 5:21 pm

That was the impression I was under, that if she quits after accepting the seat, the bylaws would force a special election. If that is the intent, or just to leave the seats vacant for 2 years, I think both outcomes are better than the alternatives.

  • Chris
    November 6, 2017 at 11:33 am

It wouldn’t hurt anyhow to cast protest votes for the Gaffneys just to send a message, because nothing’s really going to change for the better in Worcester for at long time. Only a few people are going to show-up to vote anyhow, and the same old-faces will remain.
