Saw this post on the West Boylston Police Facebook page today:

This might be the worst criminal we’ve ever encountered. First of all, he’s robbing people outside the Dollar Tree. Is there any clientele that has less money on them at any given time than the Dollar Tree crowd?

Secondly, he elected to do this at 11 AM in broad daylight, in by far the busiest part of West Boylston. That was smart.

Screen Shot 2015-12-01 at 10.29.56 AM

Thirdly, how bout that getaway plan? I’ll just run across the parking lot to the movie theater. No one will ever look for me over there.

Fourthly, he chose an an elderly victim because obviously he’s too cowardly to rob someone who can put up a fight. But he couldn’t even pull that one off. The old lady whooped his ass.

Anyway, this kid is obviously addicted to drugs if you can’t tell by the picture. But that’s no excuse. And yes, Turtleboy does believe that addiction is a disease, but it’s still a disease that human beings choose to have. No one decides that they’re gonna get cancer, but everyone makes a choice to put that needle in their arm the first time. That’s why we couldn’t believe the commentary on the WB Police Facebook page:

Screen Shot 2016-06-15 at 12.15.36 PM

Addiction isn’t a choice? I’m sorry, did someone stick a needle in your arm and force you to love heroin?

Screen Shot 2016-05-30 at 10.01.59 AM

Screen Shot 2016-06-15 at 12.15.47 PM

I’ve seen what addiction can do to people. It’s pretty messed up. But the addicts I’ve encountered steal from each other or take their parents’ ATM card. Robbing a little old lady outside of the Dollar Store ain’t the same thing.

Screen Shot 2016-06-15 at 12.18.24 PM

Oh yea, because HE is the victim here. This is insane. The Facebook post is overrun with comments like this. Seriously, are we all just forgetting that a 72 year old woman was attacked by an abled bodied 22 year old man? We just gonna look past that because he was addicted to drugs? OK then.

Then there was this BRILLIANT comment:

Screen Shot 2016-06-15 at 12.16.41 PM

Oh yea, the old lady isn’t hurt, so no harm no foul right? We shouldn’t worry about her. We should worry about him. The 22 year old man who made a choice to rob an old woman is the REAL victim here.

This has just gone way too far now. It’s one thing to feel bad for people that are addicted to opiates. But it’s another thing to turn him into the victim for a crime that he perpetrated. I’m sorry, but are we just supposed to give everyone a free pass if they’re addicted to drugs? Is that the new protocol? So if a drug addict robs an old lady it’s not his fault, but if someone else does it they’re a huge dooshnozzle?

The bottom line is that yes, addiction is a disease. But if you do get addicted to drugs then that’s your own fault, and you shouldn’t expect sympathy from people on the Internet who don’t know you when you unsuccessfully try to steal a little old lady’s purse.

The anti-stigma campaign is and should be aimed at eliminating the stigma for GETTING HELP… the stigma of what it means to be an addict is, in many cases, well deserved… you cannot remove the shame associated with shitty behavior if you ever want it to stop. LHelp the people that genuinely want it, and for those who don’t, fuck ’em.

I knew this kid quite well so I am allowed to comment. He’s a spoiled brat from Holden. He has always been a meek little coward and a user. He abused his “friends” he made sure at 16-20 he got them on opiate pills so that could feel powerful and make up for his complete lack of character. He’s selfish and has no moral compass. His friends moved on and he never grew up. Bullying as best he could with his only means a substance. Stealing from his “friends” as well as myself, someone who was actually nice to him even helped with his qcc homework. I am an innocent party that couldn’t stand having a worm in the same house… which he used as his flop spot because his nice big house was not an option. He drove a super nice car at a very young age which I’m sure he didn’t fund with his price chopper wages, his parents probably thought they were doing him good. Parents aren’t to blame here, they gave him everything.

Jake Barrette you were the only one weaker than him in the whole group and he abused you the worst. Jake how dare you defend him. You are sober? And think this behavior reasonable, Jake? Idiot.

Bottom line: kid was always a weak cowardly douche hat, he lacks character. Drugs didn’t cause his deficiencies. At one point he had everything going for him. He chose his target because he saw a what he presumed to be a soft target. Lucia was too delusional and underestimated what a loser low life little twerp he truly is inside. Shame on him for squandering his life, and shame on anyone coming to his defense. Money can’t buy character. That’s his problem not drugs. I like to read that lady fought back, she’s obviously very strong, and I hope that she can recover from such a rotten event. Matt Lucia is and has always been a little wimp, unfortunately you can treat addiction but can’t treat the problems he has.

Maybe someone should think about the elderly woman who is most likely on a fixed income and would go without food until her next check comes in the mail. Addiction is terrible but it is the consequence of using drugs, a consequence put squarly on the addict themselves. This woman was just going about her day and doesn’t deserve to be traumatized because a junkie needs their fix for the day.

I wish I saw this sooner while it was still hot because I have a serious question and it’s for all the hard rocks talking about all the pain they’d rain on this skel. Preamble – not defending the robber. He made a choice to dance with a needle and that choice led to him being a pussy who targets old ladies. The question – all of you talking about knocking out his teeth, etc. because he’s an open sore on society’s vagina, where did you stand on the cops who tuned up the douche speeding through neighborhoods? He could’ve killed innocent victims and – right or wrong – justice was served. Just curious.

Kat Bonneau – “That old lady isn’t hurt in any way.”
    WTF?

Hey Kat – here’s something “useful” I have to say…I do not ever wish YOU to be the victim of a real or completed crime. Let me tell you, if you were, YOU might understand that it ain’t all about getting physically hurt. That “old lady” , God forbid, may be a lot more hesitant to go about her business and might suffer psychological harm from having your buddy try to TAKE HER BELONGING FORCIBLY from her!

Hating what addicts have done to themselves, their families and society doesn’t mean hating them, but it sure doesn’t mean giving them a free pass to attack people.

BTW- I am betting Kat would be the FIRST to cry “I need a safe space” over, well, anything.

If someone commits a crime Remy, they deserve to be punished for it. Sure temper justice with mercy by putting these offenders away where they can get clean. But if you do the crime then you do the time, end of the story. There is ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSE, NONE,. NADA, ZIP, ZERO for trying to rob innocent people of their hard earned money. For all YOU know that old lady could have been headed into that dollar store to by cat food, because that’s all she could afford to eat. Ohhh but pooooooor addicted criminal needs his fix so it’s fucking ok and he shouldn’t be punished? Seriously? What drugs are YOU on?

Remysmom, you are missing the point. We could get over the fact he has an addiction problem if he wasnt robbing elderly women to get his next high. That is the problem..

My father passed away at 51. He drank too much and didnt take care of himself. but guess who doesnt do that? Me, and my son won’t either because I will whoop his ass if he starts. NOBODY has a perfect family, its not a reality anymore. People have problems. It’s how we deal with them that makes us who we are. And dealing with an addiction by robbing an old lady is not the right way. He needed/needs help, clearly, and you know what, I hope he can get it, live up to his mistakes and become a better person from it…But for now, he is just another victim in the drug problem we face. No one else stuck a needle in his arm/lit the joint/put the pill in his mouth…

    • Dom
      June 16, 2016 at 4:48 pm

No one is claiming to have perfect families. The problem is that you and other people that know Mr. Lucia want to pin some kind of victim tag on him.

We live in an information era. Not one single cigarette smoker stop and say “wow i didnt know smoking could kill me” … similarly, no one can say … oh, i didnt know opiates were addictive. He made a choice to use, use and use again until he was physically addicted.

A part of an addict or alcoholic’s rehabilitation is facing the music for the crap they caused. You tried to rob an elderly lady. Suck it up and face the social backlash that the crime created. It won’t last forever… people will forget and move on.

The best thing this kid can do is get clean before his next court date. Face the charges and the punishment handed out with humility. (as long as it is not forbidden by the courts) seek out the victim and offer a sincere, sober apology and maybe offer to do some yard chores or something to help her out …. and dont seek praise from others if/when this is accomplished, as all he is doing is correct the wrongs of the past.

Turtleboy – you want to call him a coward???? Why do you hide behind the corny pseudonym? I know this young man and his family. He is not a scumbag and his family is just another very nice suburban middle class family living the nightmare. Do you really think you’re helping addicts by perpetuating the stigma associated with this disease. Do you think this is funny? Why don’t you go after the dealers??? His family is not making excuses for him. Yes, addicts make a choice the first time they use. For many it quickly turns into not a choice but a necessity. You cannot compare addiction to cancer. Mental illness is a disease also. Do we blame the mentally ill for their disease? You’re an ass.

No, You’re an ass. The kid made a choice, since when don’t we live with the consequences of our actions? It is one thing to suggest the kid needs help, he probably does, and that is what YOU and HIS FAMILY are for. People that know him that will actually help him. And to all those pussies out there crying about not being constructive, or not being personally involved…. Well you are personally involved apparently. And if this was one of my brothers, i would be in jail, because I would kidnap their ass, take them somewhere remote and fucking detox them myself, because I actually give a fuck about my family.

How do young people get addicted to heroin anyway? I understand people who get injured and have to take heroin for pain, but I don’t get why someone would get addicted otherwise. Heroin is pleasant, but the tolerance builds up way too fast. Why would someone buy it so frequently they get addicted? Why not wait months in between purchases?

I once asked a former heroin addict how it all started for him. He said that he started out smoking cigarettes. Then he started smoking marijuana. When that wasn’t enough, he started trying other kinds of drugs looking for the ultimate high. He claims he found it with heroin. He also said that when you’re addicted to heroin, you don’t care who you steal from. You’ll steal from your own mother to get your next fix if you have to. When you’re having withdrawals you don’t really think things through.

Just my opinion that people who say weed was their gateway drug are usually weak minded individuals with an addictive personality to begin with.

I have an addictive personality obviously because I smoke cigarettes, I’m just not weak minded. I have quit before when I had to… (when I decided to start trying for kids) and I could do it again. However, if I’m being completely honest, I don’t want to quit. I enjoy my smokes with coffee or a few drinks, after a meal, ect. I’m down to about 8 a day. This also makes me selfish because I shouldn’t smoke if I want to see my child grow older, r? At least I can admit that without pointing blame on a disease that does not exist in my brain. When I’m ready, I will stop. I’ve chosen to quit before my child understands what it is, and believe me, I will do it then.

I also enjoy gambling. I love poker and if I had expendable money I would probably live at Foxwoods. However, because I’m not weak minded, I know when to stop. I was there last week and was down some, won it back plus some and left. That’s smart. Some people don’t know when enough is enough when it comes to anything addictive.

            Just my opinion, carry along.

The fact of the matter is that different people have different reasons. Some people are genetically predisposed to addiction so one drug leads to another. The addict will say to themselves, “At least I’m not doing heroin.” Then the next thing you know they are doing heroin. Then they will say, “At least I’m just smoking it and not injecting it…” And the downward spiral keeps going. Some people self medicate to run from their demons. Some people just don’t want to be a part of reality so they use drugs to escape.

The problem is that some people are always chasing that high and the heroine high not only feels good but it’s cheap. What could be better for an addict than a good cheap high?

Many of these people started out with Vicodin and Percosets and so on. Those opiates as you know are highly addictive for most people. The stats show that everyone who takes them will eventually become addicted, it’s only a matter of time. After your average pill popping addict couldn’t get the pills from their doctors they could get them fairly cheap on the street. Then the DEA looked around said, “Oh shit we have an opiate problem better clamp down on the prescriptions.” You’ll notice that the huge heroine epidemic really kicked into high gear when they turned the prescriptions in to schedule II. I am not saying that I don’t think the drug should be limited, but it is disingenuous for the powers that be to get all up in arms about a opiate crisis when they had a huge hand in developing it. I am not saying that people don’t OD from the pills, but a lot of that comes from lack of education on the meds themselves. They are a respiratory depressant and people will take them with Alcohol, benzodiazapines, anti-depressants and other medications that are respiratory depressants (or over dose on the pills) looking for a higher high.

Since doctors now have to answer to every script they shell out they prescribe the drug less and less to keep their asses covered, which is something they should have been doing in the first place. It was irresponsible to be handing them out for toothaches, backaches, and paper cuts like they were doing anyway.

So now the street value of these meds have gone way up and heroine is waaay cheap. The addicts are addicted and they need their high from somewhere. They are in too much pain be it emotional or physical to try to get clean. Getting clean is hard. Getting heroin is easy.

On the other hand, there are people who use drugs to self medicate. Having taken opiates for short spurts over the last few years (I refuse to take them anymore) I can tell you that opiates are great at making you not give a shit. Your life sucks? Just want to be numb and not bugged by it all? Opiates can make it all go away, if only for a little while.

I alternately feel sorry for addicts and angry at them. They should just have the balls and courage to pull themselves out of the hole and get over their addiction, but there is a song by Brad Paisley called Whiskey Lullaby with the line, “Life is short, but this time it was bigger than the strength she had to get up off her knees.” Sometimes people just can’t get away from their demons.

To address crime and addiction. Well, sorry Matt and his defenders, but there is absolutely no excusing such criminal behavior. I don’t care how sick someone is – once you start stealing and assaulting other people you lose what little pity you deserve and you need to be put away for a long time, and hopefully are able to get clean in the process.

If he pulled that on my Grandmother he really would be the victim. I would hunt him down to the ends of the earth.

      This.

He’d be arriving at court for his arraignment missing teeth, in a wheelchair, with a neck collar, unable to chew solid food, pissing his pants in fear for what I’d do to him if he pled “not guilty.”

You don’t fuck with kids, or the elderly.
