Here’s a sad story out of Worcester….

Just to summarize:

  • Melissa O’Bryant and her family owned an indoor/outdoor cat named Cleo, which they’ve had for 3.5 years
  • The last day they saw the cat was at their house on Grafton Hill on Saturday, December 2.
  • They were planning on taking a family vacation (cruise) on December 6, and had arranged for their neighbor to watch both their cat and puppy while they were gone
  • They hoped the cat would come back, as Cleo has disappeared before, but always returns
  • By December 5 they had to drop the puppy off with their neighbor, who agreed to put up posters with her phone number in case anyone found the cat
  • Her neighbor began putting up signs on December 8

  • On December 14 a woman who lives a street away saw one of the posters and called the neighbor. Turns out she’d been feeding the cat along with other strays, and called animal control because she thought the cat belonged to someone
  • On November 26, Melissa took the cat to the vet, paid for a bunch of shots and a teeth cleaning, spending over $500 in the process. They’ve also invested thousands of dollars in vaccinations and other vet bills, just as many pet owners have.
  • The woman from a street away first saw the cat on December 3 and had been feeding it, called the WARL on December 6. By December 9 the cat was adopted to another family.
  • The WARL posted this on Facebook on December 6, the day Melissa and her family left the country:

  • Melissa did not see this picture until she got back
  • Neither her neighbor or the woman who turned the cat into the WARL knew about the cat being posted because they don’t use Facebook
  • Melissa’s neighbor called the WARL when she found out what happened, but said they can’t make the new “owners” give the cat back
  • The WARL did try calling the new “owner” of someone else’s cat, to do a wellness check, and they said the cat was doing great. But the WARL did not mention that the cat belonged to someone else
  • On December 19, Melissa made her post on Facebook which has been shared hundreds of times, and prompted the WARL to once again call the new “owners” and let them know that the cat belongs to someone else. They’ve offered them other options, including a new cat, but they still refuse to give up the cat which belongs to another family.
  • Melissa does not blame the WARL, who she says was only trying to help
  • Her son is 6 years old and sad, and really misses his cat

Alright, first of all, the fact that this was posted three days ago and we’re just finding out about it now is why it’s so dangerous for Facebook to take our page down. We spoke with Melissa at lengths today, and she told us that she wanted to reach out to us to help, but when she looked for our page it was gone:

We’ll be adding this to the lawsuit for sure. People who rely on us as a media outlet can no longer do so because Didi Delgado and Kevin Lynch mass reported our page for pornography and bullying. By getting rid of our page they are denying people access to the media. And because of that this was what people started doing instead:

Not a single person tagged the Fallout Shelter page, and only one person messaged us. Our inbox on the old page would’ve been FLOODED with tips about this.

Anyway, it goes without saying that we are 1,000% behind Melissa and her family. This is wrong on so many levels. First of all, the cat is their property. They paid for it. They’ve paid for all the vaccinations and vet bills. It belongs to them legally. They should hire a lawyer and get the cat back, because I’m pretty sure if someone else finds your property, it still belongs to you. If your car was stolen, found by a stranger, and then sold to someone else, the car still belongs to you. Cars don’t have a pulse. Cats do.

Secondly, cats and dogs are not just animals. They’re not quite family, but they’re pretty close. People develop emotional bonds with their pets. You can’t just take a cat away from a child like this.

Thirdly, the woman from a street over should never have been feeding this cat. She’s the reason the cat didn’t come home in the first place – because Cleo could get food somewhere else.

Fourthly, even if the family had gone on vacation, this story would’ve played out the same way. Because the WARL seems to rely solely on Facebook in order to get the word out about missing pets. Melissa did not follow this Facebook page, and thus she wouldn’t have been alerted to it, and the cat still would’ve been adopted by another family. Once again, this is yet another example of how Facebook has become a monopoly that basically controls are lives. The WARL assumes that everyone is on Facebook, and why wouldn’t they? They are more powerful than the government and should be treated like a public utility at this point.

Fifthly, it is their fault that the cat didn’t have a collar or a chip, and she acknowledges that. But she shouldn’t be forced to lose a pet that’s part of the family simply because she made a mistake.

Sixthly, cats should have to be licensed and collars just like dogs.

Seventhly, the WARL does an AMAZING job taking in these animals and saving them. But with that said they clearly need to adjust their policy. Anyone who adopts a “stray” cat like this should have to sign some sort of paperwork acknowledging that if the cats rightful owner comes forward, they need to give the cat back.

Eighthly, stop blaming Melissa.

Cats go missing overnight sometimes. They usually come home. If I had a nonrefundable cruise ticket and my cat or dog was missing I’d still go on the cruise. Why wouldn’t you? What are you gonna do at home? Sit there, twiddle your thumbs, and hope that today’s the day Pongo comes back? The vacation had absolutely nothing to do with this.

Finally, fuck these chudmunchers who won’t give back the cat! How much of an asshole can you possibly be to make a 6 year old boy sad like this? And at Christmas too!! There’s literally no reason for them not to. They’ve had the cat for less than 2 weeks. They can’t possibly be that attached to it. They’re probably calling it by a different name then it’s used to responding to, and more than likely the cat misses her owner and would prefer to be where she belongs. They know they can get a new cat. They know they’re hurting a child. They know the cat doesn’t belong to them. And they’re doing it anyway because they have no soul.

The WARL should release the name of the family that now has the cat. Maybe their hands really are tied, but a good ol’ fashioned public shaming on Turtleboy ought to do the trick. Has one of your neighbors recently brought a cat that looks like this home?

If so let us know and maybe we can figure this out the old fashioned way. I’d say to message us on our Facebook page, but, ya know…

So message the Turtleboy Sports Fallout Shelter Facebook page instead. Or just email us at turtleboysports@gmail.com.

Okay, I’m not being all internet warrior, BUT: if that were one of my cats, there is no way that family would still have him or her. I would find them and covertly kidnap my kitteh back.

You piece of crap, why don’t you just give the poor kid his cat back?

Too bad the family isn’t “connected,” if you know what I mean. Then they would be able to have someone go in and take the cat by force. People really do suck.

I call bullshit. Anyone with enough compassion to adopt an adult cat would return it to the family. There’s something that the shelter or “new owner” don’t want people to know.

      December 22, 2017 at 6:05 pm

Exactly! What about that sick bastard TB blogged about that use to cut off the paws of cats, and his girlfriend had them in her mini fridge. They put word out to local shelters not to let them adopt any pets. There are a lot of sick people in this world and I really hope that nobody took that animal to harm it. But the question is why not give it back to the rightful owners. Something is going on. It just doesn’t seem right

    • festivus
      December 23, 2017 at 1:43 am

maybe the shelter is lying to the true owner to shut her down

      • poor Cleo
        December 23, 2017 at 9:54 am

I wonder if this cat is okay. I think the shelter should ask to see this animal. I have a very bad feeling and I hope with all my heart I’m wrong, but I don’t think this cat is okay. I am concerned if it is even still alive. Like I already said I really hope I am wrong.

I think to put the public at ease we should at least have some sort of proof of this animals well being. And by proof I mean something that shows that animal is okay as of this moment. And by someone that can be trusted.

On the fb post about this, someone said they had the feeling that it went home with an employee of WARL. Pretty shitty of them if that’s true! Give the cat back!

It’s a used cat how much can it be worth? A nice kitten I understand but a untrained used old cat.. wtf.

LOL – Sterling Animal Shelter used to offer ‘adopt an adult cat or kitten, get a second adult cat free.’

  • MSPCA
    December 22, 2017 at 3:19 pm

The new owners should give the cat back. That said allowing cats outdoors is totally irresponsible. They are transient by nature, territorial, and destroy the ecosystem. Stats vary on life expectancy but the difference between the lifespan of an indoor cat vs outdoor cat should enough to compel any responsible cat owner not to let their cat out.

    • Chill out
      December 23, 2017 at 6:32 pm

Chill out. My neighbor always gave me crap about my cat killing birds in her yard so I suggested that she move the bird feeders but she refused so basically she’s the one that lured the birds to their death. Whether it was my cat or her stupidity Darwinism was at work and after a few months of this the birds are mostly gone. She didn’t hear me bitch when one of my cats went missing because that too is Darwinism. When my big tabby asserts his dominance its loud as hell but that’s just one of the sounds of summer. You just have to let cats be cats.

This cat lived with this little boy and family for almost four years. Mistakes happen and thankfully the cat is alright. Imagine how attached this little boy and his family are to this animal. Almost fours years to the “new” owners few weeks. I’m sorry but you have to be very cruel to not give this family back their kitty. I know my family would be very upset if something happened to our fur baby and we weren’t able to have him any longer. My youngest would be lost without his buddy. I hope the people who adopted this cat do the right thing. There are many cats in need of home, give this one back and adopt another. Two will be saved in the process. And your not breaking a child’s heart. <3

    • ugh
      December 22, 2017 at 10:06 pm

Maybe I missed it, but nowhere does it say that the adopters were told by WARL that the cat belongs to a child who misses it. Therefore, it may be unfair to brand the adopters as cruel, heartless, etc.

The WARL ‘wellness check’ call sounds a bit cowardly – why not just state right off the bat that the cat belonged to someone else? Instead, they waited until the family took to FB, and THEN contacted the adopters a second time. Yes, giving up the cat then would be the right thing to do, but again, who knows if they are aware that it belongs to a child?

Good arguments can be made for both sides. Sounds like a judge may have to settle this one but why wouldn’t they microchip their cat? Especially since it’s not the first time it’s gone missing.

They can afford a family cruise, vaccinations, etc… But not a $60 grain of rice microchip? My indoor cat’s are chipped.

No reason to not chip your pet. None. Pure ignorance.

If it was ‘adopted’ by a Chinese restaurant, I’m not sure the little boy would want the cat back. Also, you called it a dog lower in your post.
