Worcester has a legend it’s midst. His name is Rodney Agyare-May, he goes to Burncoat High School, and he’s one of the fastest runners in America. Last year he won the State Championship in the 400 meters as a sophomore, with a time of 48.35 – faster than almost every Olympic athlete ran at that age. Yesterday he added to his growing legacy by emasculating the field in the State Championship in the 600 meters. His time of 1:19.28 not only was good enough for the easy victory, he smashed the all time state record in the process. Ya got that? He’s a junior in high school and in the entire history of the state of Massachusetts, no one has ever been faster than him.

The scary part is that this is not his fastest time. Earlier this season he ran a 1:18.94 at an invitational at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. That is two tenths of a second off of the all time New England record, and one second off of the national record. It’s also the fastest time in the United States of America this year.

The fastest high school athlete in the United States of America goes to Burncoat High School. Could not be prouder to be a Worcester Public School graduate than I am right now. I’m so happy that this kid decided to go to public school. Too often this is the type of kid that ends up going to St. John’s. Add him to the list with Mike Bradley and Ron Brace of Burncoat legends that kept it real by staying in the WPS.

Rodney can pretty much go to any college he wants to if he plays his cards right, and it would’ve been awesome to bring Turtleboy Jr. to see him at the Boston Olympics in 2024. But the butthurts in Eastern MA can’t handle two weeks of traffic, so we’ll have to settle for this.

Here’s the results from yesterday’s 600 meters:

Notice in that fastest seeded section there were three runners from Central Massachusetts running (there’s a kid from Wachusett and Fitchburg in the background). That’s pretty damn impressive in and of itself.

Speaking of impressive, I know we have an audience out in the Metrowest, so we thought we’d give a shoutout to Thomas Ratcliffe from Concord-Carlisle, who decimated the state record in the boys mile yesterday, winning in an insane time of 4:06. The previous record was held by Wachusett’s Michael Banks, in 4:11. He won by over 8 seconds, beating another Wachusett kid named Grant Hauver, whose time of 4:14 is pretty is pretty disgusting. He just has the misfortune of being in high school at the same time as the fastest miler in state history.

Last thing. There has been talk about building an indoor track facility in Worcester, like the Reggie Lewis Center, at that abandoned lot by Wyman Gordon on Madison Street. This needs to happen and it needs to happen yesterday. Do you understand how much money the Reggie Lewis Center makes? Reggie is one of the only venues in New England with a banked track like this, so it’s the only place that can host meets like this. The place gets packed with thousands of people, all of whom pay to come in the door. They are booked solid every single weekend, including sponsored New Balance and Nike meets that feature world class Olympic athletes. And they make all this money because they have a monopoly. If our leaders in Worcester had any brains they would’ve built a facility like this a long, long time ago, because it’s a money making machine. Oh yea, and it’s also a nice thing for runners to be able to access when it’s snowing outside, because we all know what happens to runners when they try to be heroes and brave the elements in the snow.

Worcester doesn’t need a minor league baseball team. It needs an indoor track.

I agree. T&F/ XC, both have been growing a ton in the Inter-high League. As an athlete for WTHS, even having a team combined with North high, coaching has been very low quality. I would say these sports has grown much in the past few years while I attended a WP school. Looking back at my high school running career, I have noticed that the coaches really molded each school’s programs. Doherty, prominently had solid T&F/ XC programs because of their “quality”(better than other WPS) coaches. Now that some of these WPS like Burncoat’s T&F coach John Nicol are coaching, these talented high school kids could finally use their talent to ultimately run fast and go to college to pursue education!
I have also heard about the making of a baseball stadium in downtown Worcester for some reason…Baseball is a dying sport, while T&F has dominantly growing in Worcester. I just don’t understand why a baseball field would be made instead. We have the field by Holy Cross that barely gets played on by the Worcester Tornadoes (I am not sure if they even exist anymore). Back to what I was saying, Western Mass has a few indoor track facilities, used by collegiate and even high school track meets (Springfield/Smith College). Westfield State also has a 160m indoor track open to the public which is better than nothing. On the other hand, Eastern Mass has a few of the best facilities in the nation. The Reggie and BU are both high quality banked indoor tracks in which collegiate and high school meets are run at. Tufts and Brandeis also have indoor tracks. See what I am saying?! It just drives me crazy that Central Mass has no “professional like” indoor facilities to run on. The closest thing we have to a 200m indoor track is Wachusett, Shrewsbury, and Fitchburg’s indoor 150m gym track. These indoor tracks don’t even allow spikes to be worn on them. It is about time for Worcester to make a 200m banked indoor facility.
As a WPS graduate now running at a collegiate level, these seem to be some problems in T&F/XC in Worcester that I assume other have as well.

What fantastic runners Central Mass is turning out!

I totally agree that Worcester needs its own RLC type facility. My kid runs for a HS in Worcester County and it is a HAUL to travel to RLC every other weekend or so. It’s a very long day and when they have a meet durning the week, they have gotten home at 11pm at times, which is hard on a kid that still has homework to do and tests to study for. I’d back that project, even though my kid will be long gone out of HS by then.

I was a baseball / football / ski goon in WPS high school. I recall that the track programs in the inter-high always had really good athletes. Happy for Mr. Agyare-May.
