We’ve known it was gonna snow for a week, and it hasn’t snowed since February, but apparently that wasn’t enough time for the City of Worcester to get it’s collective shit together today. This afternoon at about 3:30 PM, this Turtleboy was at the Buzz Barbershop getting that post-Christmas fresh cut from Heather the West Side wonder-barber. I hadn’t been out of the house all day and found out the hard way that the official policy for Ed Augustus and crew when it came to this wintry dump, was “fuck it.”

Anyway, Heather the wonder-barber’s beau plows for the city. He was literally waiting by the phone all day for the call that didn’t come until 4:00. Coincidentally this was about 30 minutes after we posted on Facebook about what a disaster the roads were.

I’m sure the Worcester Fire Department appreciated the fact that their very expensive truck was nearly totaled on hilly First Street:

12436103_1664909643792312_1460500533_n

Oh good, Ed Augustus and those who manage the City of Worcester are trying to get firefighters killed and cost the city millions of dollars. Solid leadership up top. Good thing the hacks who run the FF union continue to support this administration, who REFUSES to give them a new contract:

11997515_10206583052269325_728876248_nEvery firefighter we’ve spoken with, and we’ve spoken to a lot, was voting for Gaffney. All of them. But unfortunately, just like the way Lenny Z ignores his teacher’s opinions and endorses Petty/Augustus with their union dues, those who head the FF union do the exact same thing to their members. You want a new contract? You wanna drive the trucks around on roads that are actually plowed? Here’s an idea – quit giving money to the people who are FUCKING YOU OVER!!! That might help.

Here’s the people’s City Councilor, Mike Gaffney’s quote when we asked him what he thought about the roads: “Once again our City Manager has shown that he is a politician, great at handing out taxpayer money without accountability, but horrible with the actual day to day management of the City.”

Boom. Roasted. Couldn’t have said it any better myself.

This is why Gaffney is the people’s City Councilor. He continues to be the voice of the people and isn’t afraid to stand up to this corrupt, useless political machine that bends us over every chance they get. Fast Eddie is really good at playing politics. He spent hundreds of thousands of dollars putting on the “Department of Justice race discussions,” he continues to find creative ways to write checks to Mosaic Culutral Complex so they can organize blockades of our streets, but he can’t find a way to plow our roads.

Hey Eddie, taxpayers don’t give a shit about race discussions. We care about roads, schools, and municipal services, all of which are lacking. Yet we still continue to pay some of the highest property tax rates in the state. What exactly are we getting for that? Because I’m failing to see why I should continue to live in this dump.

Like Gaffney said, the problem here is that a City MANAGER is supposed to know how to MANAGE a city. And in Worcester, it has a tendency to snow. But since Ed Augustus has been a professional politician his entire career, and has no background in business administration, he has absolutely no clue how to run a small city, never mind the second largest city in New England.

The whole purpose of the City Manager system is to have your city run by someone who IS NOT a politician. Someone who doesn’t have to worry about the next election. But instead Joe Petty and the McGovern Crime Family have tapped their boy to this $200,000 job that he is clearly not qualified for. The roads today were a joke today. They were unacceptable and people need to start voicing their displeasure directly to Eddie. Here’s his email – CityManager@worcesterma.gov  and here’s his phone number – (508) 799-1175. Let him know that streets like this are not acceptable:

That second picture is a bunch of sand that a sander dumped in the middle of the road and dropped off. Because…fuck it.

The real kick in the nuts was when the City of Worcester put this up on their Facebook page:

12463973_1664909323792344_510808896_n

This is the winter equivalent of “our streets are safe.” It’s just a lie that they tell you because they know you’re not gonna show up and vote them out anyway. They have the financial backing of the McGovern Crime Family so they can shit on your french toast and tell you it’s cinnamon and you have no choice but to eat the whole thing. Everyone on the City Council backs Ed Augustus except for Gaffney and Konnie Lukes. All of them. If your roads sucked today we highly suggest you contact your City Councilor and tell them that if they vote to bring back Fast Eddie at the end of the year, you won’t be voting for them in 2017.

Here’s a couple more anecdotes to wrap this thing up:

Yes the streets were a total mess, and yes the fire truck had a problem!! Why, Why is it that no one is concerned about the police that are on those streets all day and all night travel to get to people who need help?????? They risk their life’s everyday for the people of Worcester because they care!! So let’s NOT forget them so easily

Please let me know by emailing djpesquera@cbs.com or calling 617-787-7018.

Thank you for your time, take care.

Any talk about the “snow budget” is laughable . It’s only a number on paper. Always under funded so the empty suits can pump up other items to make it look like they care. By the way, how are the roads in the Metro West area? Where is it, Medway or Millis that is the real home of the City Manager?

We live where there is a lot of snow.
People should make sure they have decent tread on there tires. And most of all learn how to drive.
The city is doing just fine.

I’m glad the firefighters are ok. Yesterday was a mess. Whoever is in charge of planning the plowing and salting of the roads definitely dropped the ball! We knew the weather was coming for at least a week and not much was done for the city roads besides the normal heavy commuting areas. Thanks to my street not being plowed or salted until close to midnight last night, I was involved in a little accident with a neighbor’s vehicle. The same lack of care of clearing the roads cost two families to lose their home last year from a fire, due to firefighters having a hard time making it up my street and finding a hydrant. Politicians will be politicians but they need to be held accountable for their lack of care. WE PAY YOU FUCKS WITH OUR TAX MONEY, TAKE CARE OF YOUR CITIZENS!!

  • Local Jake
    December 30, 2015 at 12:43 pm

Alright, once again you’ve written heavily biased and bad information regarding the fire department. If the firefighter’s union thought they were being screwed by “hacks” at the top of the union they would have voted them out by now in the annual elections.

The union considered endorsing Gaffney, but instead he outright stated in a response email that he did not want the support of the firefighters union, so you saying that every single firefighter would be voting for him is a truly ridiculous statement with no sort of factual support.

As far as the contract goes, the firefighters have been fighting tooth and nail to get something done, and finally after much deliberation the contract is going to arbitration. No city council members are even involved at this point, it’s between the contract negotiation teams and their attorneys.

And by the way, that truck that almost rolled- it was built in 1994. It is almost as old as some of the members of the department. The union has been fighting to update the aging fleet for some time by endorsing candidates who support an aggressive replacement plan of the trucks, probably not a worthwhile idea to support a candidate who has no interest in that.

  • December 30, 2015 at 12:39 pm

If anybody did have any unfortunate accidents due to the horrible roads in Worcester, you should attempt to recoup that money via small claims. It is completely unreasonable for them NOT to plow the roads yesterday. Simple as that. Any rational person would have made the request for plows to hit the roads. By not doing so the city showed a blatant disregard for public safety and also displayed gross negligence as it pertains to the Worcester Fire Department. This mayor needs to be ousted, desperately! You have to be an idiot not to have dispatched the plows yesterday. It’s that simple. There are A LOT of people that could do the city manager’s job and to be quite honest, they want the job. Why not allow competent people do that job? Wow! Common sense is not so common – Voltaire 1764.

Kempton at the DPW has a whole lot to do with the decision making! I live the life of a plow wife, it is not the fault of the drivers what so ever! When my husband finally got called out to the Flagg st area the 2 trucks had to make sure they did these big wigs streets then they were sent home! May not been a whole lot of snow but it still needed attention, not attention after dark when everything froze up worse. The city won’t pay for our plow that broke trying to get through the ice!

I am totally disgusted by this whole thing, the first snow (under an inch) and they can’t get that right. I just sent that asshat an email, thanks for giving it out TB. • One PO'd citizen
    December 30, 2015 at 10:28 am

I just sent an email to the City Manager. Feel free to read below.

I couldn’t believe my eyes this morning, oh wait, yes I could. Driving from Webster, through Oxford and Auburn, where the streets are completely cleared. You wouldn’t even know it snowed. That is until you get to the Worcester City line on James St/South Ludlow St. It was like night and day. What a shit show. Those other cities have HALF of the Property Tax that Worcester has and they did a great job on the roads, even the side roads. I can’t believe that there were barely any plow trucks out in Worcester yesterday. You should look at how many accidents happened yesterday just because of the road conditions, that could have been avoided if you did your job! Not to mention the Fire Truck that almost rolled over! The people that are trying to save people lives and houses, almost injured because of you! Stop screwing them over!

Basically, SHAME ON YOU! in the words of the great Bill Belichick “DO YOUR JOB!” Oh sorry, I guess you need to learn how to do it first.

    Sincerely,
    One PO’d citizen

I hope they didn’t fine anyone with un shoveled sidewalks since they did not plow! We should all send them a fine with a picture of the road outside our driveway.
I emailed at 6 pm in regards to the disgrace of a plow job and how I couldn’t even turn off the main road to my driveway without sliding across the main road. I received an email back and a message that they would call the supervisor of the area and the truck for that road. They think we are idiots. I knew they didn’t plow all day and it’s not the plow guys fault! I think about 11pm they strolled by. A bit too late and now the nice ice build up at the end of my driveway is my problem.

  • Um
    December 30, 2015 at 9:06 am

Now, don’t take this as an attempt to defend city hall, but:

I think it was just a poor judgment call. The National Weather Service down-graded the impact of the storm Monday evening saying we (in central MA) were getting about 1 inch and mostly rain after the morning (which would have washed the snow away). Obviously, mother nature changed her mind and we ended up with much colder day-time temps that made more ice on top of what fell overnight. Meteorologists keep saying we are going to have a January/February like last year and they (city hall) are probably paranoid of blowing the snow budget too early. It was definitely a poor judgment call, but like Dave said above, this particular situation was a “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” kind of situation.

Eh, I kind of agree with you to an extent… Poor judgement call when they only had a prediction to go off of? Sure. Poor judgement call at 7 am when we thought it might get warmer? Yeah, I’ll accept that. Poor judgement call at 1 pm, when you could physically stand outside and realize, “Hey, it’s not getting any warmer, and this rain hitting my face feels solid… like ice”? No, that’s just idiocy.

The city of Worcester does not call out the plows until there is 3 inches of snow. Sucks I know but if you saw plows out when there was only an inch of snow people would be bitching that the city was wasting money /plowing so little snow so it is a catch 22.

Given the weather report, I don’t understand why they wouldn’t plow the slush to get it off the road surface before it freezes. Every other town around Worcester did this, and what do you know – the roads are great today, while Woo’s are still craptastically dangerous. Way to go, Worcester DPW!

No, if it was 1 inch of powder there would be bitching. This was 1.5 inches of slush which was frozen and mixed with freezing rain so the roads were slippery. The DPW commissioner denied the roads were slippery. A 90 day suspension is in order at a minimum.

Salt trucks were out there that night 12 midnight I watched them go by. Wonder if they only did certain roads or something.

Up on Fox Meadow drive, the first plus truck came by at 5:30 PM!! I don’t know if you’ve ever seen our street, but is basically a 90° angle straight up! Thanks for sucking Worcester.

Hey neighbor! This is my first winter on Foxmeadow and I was wondering when the heck I would see any treatment of the roads. After all, we ARE on one of the more steep hills in the city. I attempted to head out around 2pm and there was an 18-wheeler stuck, horizontally, on the hill. Lame.

This blog is starting to go downhill faster than a car on an unplowed Belmont st.

I was surprised when I was driving into work tonight at 10pm, and the roads in Sterling were imperfect but passable (since the slush froze up)… I hit Worcester, and it looks like the roads in Sterling did this morning! I would say that it’s unbelievable, but given the level of corruption in city government, it is unfortunately all too believable.

This can’t be true. The DPW commissioner said there were NO accidents, that this was just a “mop up”. Was he lying? He should join the ranks of “Dr. ” Beverly Scott and be canned before the week is out if he was.

Oh and paul moosey also said the streets weren’t even slippery. Simply untrue. By virtue of the build up of slush which was left unplowed, it WAS in fact slippery, then it froze, making itveven more slippery. Now (Wednesday AM) we are adding a glaze of frozen drizzle to this to top off an overall terrible situation. Heckofa job, moosie!

    Yep, total b.s.
Didn’t hear a single plow up here off Lincoln until 10:30, 11:00pm.

This is bs. I have a job where I absolutely have to work during storms because I’m considered an “essential worker.” And having to drive in this is not safe. I was pissed when I left work at 430 and nothing was done. Almost slid out on Lincoln st because of the large snow piles in the road. What are we paying taxes for??

“What are we paying taxes for??”

Oh, oh! I know! I know! We are paying taxes for the likes of Mosaic and diversity training…and, I forecast, taxes will also be going for a “nationwide search” for a new school superintendent, who will probably turn out to be….the current acting superintendent!

If you’re an “essential worker” then you obviously don’t work for the city.
