NBC: A Jamestown woman accused of leaving her dogs in a hot car, causing their deaths, appeared in Newport District Court on Friday. Supporters say 65-year-old Ann Garnett is a dedicated animal advocate and they feel this was a tragic accident. Garnett faces three counts of confinement of an animal to a motor vehicle and three counts of unnecessary cruelty an animal. The latter are felonies.
“The police department of Jamestown should’ve taken her and said this is a tragedy and supported her,” said Pebbles Wadsworth, a friend of Garnett’s.
Police said Garnett’s three dogs were left in her car in 90-degree weather Sunday while she went into McQuade’s Marketplace, a small grocery store. Friends claim Garnett left the air conditioning on, but police said it wasn’t working. In court, prosecutors said the dogs were in the car for about 1 hour and 45 minutes. Friends say she’s a longtime animal advocate.
“She has rescued hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of dogs that would have been put down,” Wadsworth said.
Many people came to Garnett’s arraignment in support, that the courtroom reached capacity, leaving some waiting outside. Among those who attended, former Jamestown animal control officer Cathy Gregory.
“She is not a villain,” Gregory said. “She’s already suffering enough. She has been brutalized on social media. She has been brutalized by total strangers.”
Garnett has been free since Sunday, and she walked back out of court into the arms of dozens of supporters. As part of her bail conditions she must surrender two dogs and three cats that she still owns while the case is pending.
“I don’t believe that this was intentional,” Gregory said. “It was a pure accident.”

LEAVE. YOUR. DOGS. AT. HOME.
There is absolutely no reason to ever bring your dog with you while you run errands. Ever. Enough of this bullshit. It is simply unforgivable to bring your dog in a car anywhere but directly to a lake on a day like that. I’ve had dogs my whole life. When I go to the store the dogs don’t come with me. I don’t give a shit if your car has automatic AC. Air conditioning breaks, and when it does time is precious. And even if it was working fine your dogs would much rather wander around your house for 3 hours than sit in a car while you shop! Hope your organic soy yogurt was worth it!
This wasn’t just some hot day either. It was the hottest day of the year by far. Temperatures were close to 100 all weekend. This woman left those poor dogs in her car for almost two freaking hours! So much could go wrong during that time. Would she be willing to sit in a car with the AC running for 2 hours, knowing that if the AC broke she would be unable to turn it back one or open a door?
And all this bullshit support she’s getting is what happens when your grandmother’s garden club goes full free muh boi. This is what happens when someone from a wealthy beach town dindu nuffin. For Christ sake, a woman named Pebbles, FUCKING PEBBLES, from the Jamestown Arts Center showed up at court to blame the police for doing their job.
Pebbles freaking Wadsworth! That sounds like a fictional WASPY villain from a Dickens novel.
Fuck all that jive. The fact that this woman worked with dogs for so long, and rescued many of them makes her crimes even more unacceptable. She should’ve known better.
Part of me feels kind of bad for this lady because she has to live with the guilt, but I feel worse for the dogs who suffered because of her idiotic decision making. Plus, when I saw some of her Facebook posts it’s pretty clear that she would judge me in a heartbeat if the shoe were on the other foot.
Anyone who has ever shared something from Occupy Democrats is an asshole. That page has nothing to do with traditional liberalism (which I have no issue with) and everything to do with being divisive, hateful, and smearing everyone who disagrees with you as a racist, so that the people who run the page can profit off of cheap clicks. This woman has the gall to sit here and cast judgement on Chik-Fil-A, and anyone who does business there, because the CEO gave money to a traditional marriage group 10 years ago. She has the audacity to complain that human beings are destroying the planet while killing three dogs. If you don’t think this woman would call you a bigot, or look down on you if you made such a “mistake,” you haven’t been paying attention.
Ironically this woman, and the people supporting her, are on the side of the aisle that believes there’s systemic racism in our judicial system. They bemoan the fact that black and brown people get locked up for crimes that white people don’t because white people can use their white privilege to get out of anything. And what do they do? They show up to court to support her, blame the police, and urge for the charges to be dropped. When’s the last time they did that for a black or brown defendant? Oh right, they live in Jamestown, where less than 1% of the population is black and almost everyone is wealthy. Hard to defend people you’ve intentionally isolated yourself from!
