Big props to the Turtlegram for only taking two days to report a story that we broke two days ago:

screen-shot-2016-09-14-at-10-51-12-am

It basically covers everything we did, but they do interview Shepherd Hill coach Chris Lindstrom about how he feels about Holy Name Athletic Director Jim Manzello refusing to sign a simple waiver to let Kevin Mensah play at his new public school. Coach Lindstrom is notorious in the coaching community as being the guy who doesn’t really care about winning, but wins all the time anyway. He helped his team prepare all week, but in order to draw attention to the fact that adults at Holy Name won’t let a kid play football at the school he takes classes at, Coach Lindstrom sat out the game. They play St. John’s this week and he’s gonna do it again:

“If he doesn’t play this week, we’re going to do the same thing,” the coach said. “We don’t care about wins and losses. That’s not why we’re doing this. If I sit out to support him, I know our other kids will see that and know I’d do the same thing for them if it needed to be done.”

7493816

That’s a leader right there. That’s a guy who is in it for the kids. He feels confident enough in his assistants to have them coach the game itself so that he can show how committed he is to his students. There’s a reason his teams at Shepherd Hill are widely known for their sportsmanship, which is why they always seem to win those awards:

He and his staff have won three CMCFO Sportsmanship Awards (2010, 2011, 2013). He was named a recipient of the Positive Coaching Alliance’s National Double Goal Coach Award in 2014.

Of course this hasn’t stopped morons on the Internet from writing stupid things.

Illegally recruiting? You think this is Friday Night Lights? The kid’s mother lives in Worcester, but his cousin (who he is apparently close with) lives in Dudley and Kevin stays at his house a lot. And since his cousin had a great experience at Shepherd Hill, and since he is well within his rights to apply for school choice, he did so and attends Shepherd Hill now. He lives with family, goes to the closest school, and chose this school because they’re very good academically and it would help him get into a good college. God forbid a kid think about his future and act in his own self interest.

Screen Shot 2015-12-28 at 1.20.12 PM

But just to show you how dumb and wrong these people claiming he was recruited are, here’s what Coach Lindstrom told the Turtlegram:

Lindstrom said he offered to send Mensah back to Holy Name, or to North High — his public high school — if it allowed Mensah to play football again.

“I’m doing everything I can to help Kevin emotionally,” Lindstrom said. “What they’re doing to this young man is despicable in my mind, I don’t care what the rules are — figure it out. … It’s crazy to think about what they’re doing. We just want him to be able to play football, and if they decide that one school is better for him than another, I’ll drive him there myself.”

Does that sound like a guy who gives a shit about winning? He knows that the only reason Holy Name is putting up a stink about this is because he chose to go to a school that’s better at football than them. So he’s offered to have him to go to whatever school Holy Name sees fit. Because we all know that Holy Name wouldn’t be doing this if he transferred to North High School, since North High isn’t very good at football. Lindstrom isn’t obsessed about winning high school football games, but Holy Shame sure is.

screen-shot-2016-09-12-at-2-03-24-pm

Of course the ironic part about this is that Holy Shame recruits more than any school in the area. And they don’t even try to hide it. Remember when a 7’6″ sophomore in England just up and decided he would travel to America, board with friends of Holy Name’s J.P. Ricciardi, and play basketball for a random school in Worcester he’d never heard of before? Yea, I’m sure he wasn’t recruited at all. Because things like that just fall in your lap when you’re an academically challenged high school on Vernon Hill.

neil

By the way, this is nothing against Neil Fingleton. Everyone who ever met the guy swears that he’s a great guy. We’re just pointing out the utter hypocrisy of a school that has been recruiting students solely for athletics for years, accusing another school of recruiting because they’re butthurt that their best player won’t be on their team anymore.

It’s not the only time something like this has happened at Holy Shame either. Mike Pucko made a name for himself coaching West Boylston football from 2001-04. One of his best young players at WB was current Indianapolis Colts tight end Emil Igwanegu. When Pucko was offered the coaching job at the much more sports oriented Holy Name, he took it and he brought his star player with him:

Igwenagu lives in Boylston, just over the line from Worcester, and played at West Boylston High before transferring to Holy Name. Pucko was his coach at West Boylston, too, and had Igwenago all the way up through his junior high days until he was a sophomore.

emiligwenaguphiladelphiaeaglesvclevelandes5mdmryp20l

That’s like the definition of recruiting. But it’s OK when Holy Name benefits from it, just not when they lose a player. Once again, nothing against coach Pucko. People swear by this guy’s integrity, and Turtleboy has zero problem with what he did. We’re also told that Coach Pucko proudly supports Kevin Mensah’s right to play football for the school he attends. The coach doesn’t care. The Holy Name players we’ve spoken with don’t care. The only person who seems to care is Jim Manzello.

Holy Name basically formed dream teams in football and basketball while Igwanegu was there. The basketball team won back to back Central Mass titles, before eventually losing in the state championship both years. The football team dominated Central Mass and eventually won the Super Bowl. Those teams featured current Indianapolis Colts linebacker Nick Haag, former UMass football star Dominique Price, and Assumption basketball star Michael Balderelli.

216799_1003596850514_6862_n

But I guess it was probably just a huge coincidence that this much talent ended up on the same team, in the same school, at the same time. After all, Holy Shame has zero tolerance for recruiting. According to Holy Shame AD Jim Manzello, he has no choice but to maliciously deny at high school student the ability to go to college. Ya know, because rules are rules:

“As an MIAA member school, we are obligated to abide by all MIAA rules and regulations,” Manzello said. “Presently, this circumstance is in process with the MIAA, and are unable to comment further on it.”

7e1fcfda-4de6-4da8-902b-1f429724deac

What a garbage human being this guy is. Do you have any shame dude? All you have to do is sign the Goddamn piece of paper. That’s it. The details are irrelevant. All you need to know is an adult was handed paperwork that he knows will directly impact the ability of a KID to have an opportunity to get a college scholarship, and he’s not signing it because he’s selfish, petty, and thinks that high school sports are some sort of end-all. If you’re butthurt about him going to Shepherd Hill, fine, whatever. Coach Lindstrom doesn’t care, and neither does Kevin Mensah since he’s willing to play for North, or even go back and play for Holy Name.

Of course this is ultimately what they wanted in the first place. Jim Manzello views Kevin Mensah not as a student athlete, but as his personal property. He owns the rights to Kevin Mensah, along with his extraordinary talent. If he can’t have him then no one can.

The messed up part about this is that Kevin Mensah has to appeal this ridiculous decision to the MIAA. And guess who sits on the MIAA’s board?

screen-shot-2016-09-14-at-12-31-55-pm

Yup, Jim Manzello. But he’s not the only one on the committee, so we’d really like to see Ray Cosenza, William Foley, Bill Leaver, Christopher Kursonis, James Pignataro, and Brian Reagan put some pressure on him to do the right thing. Because God knows he can’t be trusted to do the right thing on his own.

Most importantly, this is a CATHOLIC school. What kind of catholic school does this to a kid? This is what Jesus would do? Refuse to sign a simple waiver? Oh that’s right, catholic schools are only catholic in name. In reality they’re a place that gives away scholarships to the best athletes that the city has to offer so they can put together dream teams. Jim Manzello is the squid on the far right in the sweater vest:

12249777_10153811231793489_2306644436984176562_n

He never misses a photo op when one of his athletes signs a recruiting letter to college:

14315574_154543874995227_1290858610_o

14339293_154543858328562_1040119184_o

He’s always there to celebrate district and state championships:

14339184_154543871661894_539162961_o

And to pose for pictures with the never ending list of alumni who he helped pry away from public schools:

1236210_10151908735988489_578576503_n

1528723_10152141497023489_417171916_n-1
All he has to do is sign the paperwork. Even if this kid was “recruited,” which he wasn’t, what does it matter? Jim Manzello has been recruiting for years. Most importantly this isn’t about Jim Manzello. He’s an adult trying to live out his glory years. This is about Kevin Mensah, and kids like him going forward who should not have their futures robbed from them by vindictive adults who must win at all costs. We encourage you to keep calling the school and emailing them to let them know that they need to sign the stupid waiver and let the kid play.

Some posters wish to allow recruiting or switching schools willy nilly. Imagine a 16 year old deciding to change school because school X has a good QB and he is a receiver and then switching back when he doesn’t start. We all know recruiting happens and the problems only come to light when it is blatant and so obvious and all the deadlines get missed. This kid was screwed by the adults in his life many who I bet only this year took an interest. TB needs to dig up the facts.

If all you degenerated that cannot afford private schools, don’t come begging the SPM, HN’s and WA for free tuition then turn on them when things are not going your way!! Let Mensah play football, I am dying to see him pass the MCAS which he needs to take now to graduate from
a public HS. He will be at a junior college next year. The Shepherd Hill coach is full of crap he didn’t have one of his teammates recruit Kevin from HN; when Mensah found out the prep school would not pay for a student to attend there with a sub 2.0 GPA.

Maybe the kid took a look at past HN graduates who are now either riding MTN. bikes with 30 packs of natty ice or authors of cheesy blogs and he thought to himself, “Holy shit, I better transfer from this shitty school or my future will be sad and depressing!”.

The truth will come out! Kevin is not living with a cousin he is living with the family of the Shepard Hill Grad who is currently at Michigan. He was at HN the first 2 weeks of August! This is an illegal transfer if HN signed the waiver knowing all of this which they do and Kevin had played than Shepard Hill would have too forfeit their whole season.

    TB,

I love your blog, don’t get me wrong. I ride the turtle daily and truly enjoy your posts (usually). I love your SJW posts, Southbridge white trash, and bone rides. Lately though, your posts are just classless. Your blog has become full of shame and humiliation on innocent people. This whole scenario has two sides to the story; whether the student is transferring for a better football opportunity or whether Jim is not signing for petty reasons, who cares. As an outsider, it’s very easy to point fingers and label Jim as a “slug in a sweater vest”. At the end of the day Jim has a job to do and rules to abide by, as anyone does. And I can venture to guess he isn’t willing to lose his job due to this situation. You have a great blog and I will continue to read daily, but stop the shaming. It’s tasteless.

Love how all the Holy Name lemmings are coming out of the woodwork to support their school, but only seem to be interested in enforcing the “rules” when it doesn’t benefit them or threatens their insecure beliefs that they or their school are superior to others.

It’s like liberals supporting Hillary by pretending she isn’t a corrupt, morally bankrupt fraud actively working against the best interests of our country. Narcissistic people will always fight to keep their delusions alive, even if it means burning everything else down around them. Just look at the pro- Holy Name comments above for examples of this sociopathic behavior. Pride and envy are very dangerous traits common amongst people today. Wish there were mirrors that could reflect people’s souls, but i suppose libs would ban them if they did exist.

So what part of this doesn’t everyone get?- From the T&G article:
“The principals and athletic directors from both schools are required to sign the form before it’s sent to the MIAA. The form acknowledges “no recruitment took place, the student was in good standing, the student would be academically eligible and the transfer was not done for any reason related to athletics.”

Kevin’s transfer had EVERYTHING TO DO WITH ATHLETICS! He said so himself, in a few very public interviews ( that are well documented) Would YOU sign the form knowing you face MIAA sanctions? Get real people. The problem here is NOT Holy Name.

Pucko got mensah into SH. Pucko and Lindstrom have a great realationship and there’s nothing wrong with that. SH is a better place for Mensah, But HN could get in trouble for signing this waiver hurting the hundreds of kids at the school playing sports it’s awful that mensah can’t play, but he was the one giving interviews to all these outlets saying he left HN because SH gave him a better opportunity for a football scholarship. Which is proof that he left for athletic reasons. The adults who facilitated his transfer should have known these rules, and not allowed him to make these comments. HN’s hands are tied, and I understand the Emil comparison, but he didn’t give out quotes saying he left to play football to the world wide leader. Come on TB, you’re better than this.

    Turtle Boy,

You are totally wrong about the HN Athletic Director, he did everything for Kevin Mensah and his family and after attending two weeks of Captains practice with his Holy Name team he decided to attend Shepherd Hill but forgot to tell his HN teammates and coaches and AD Jim Manzello.. If Kevin Mensah’s mom thought her son wasn’t getting a great education at HN, why has her younger son remained at HN and still playing for the football team, he got bad advice from ignorant people that is going to cause this kid to miss the entire season!! Once the facts all come out no college football program will offer this player anything because of all he has caused.

If he wasn’t a d1 player Hn wouldn’t give a shit….they desperately need something or someone to help their failing school….they are below standards in atheletics and even more so academically…big of money… And the ad should have had the kid scholarships lined up already

WOW TB!! You really need to look at both sides before you post and sound like a complete jackass! Your giving Manzello a hard time for recruitment?? Lets discuss why Kevin left HN in the first place….because he was recruited for FOOTBALL which is against MIAA rules!!! You really think it was for academics? Come on, his favorite coach quit so he wanted to go elsewhere! lets discuss Kevins grades too!!! Manzello legally couldnt just not sign the waiver unless he had a reason. YES RULES ARE RULES, no matter how fast you are!! And as for SH coach where is his loyalty to his team…..what does he owe to Kevin?? If I was a player on the SH football team and i worked my butt off in practice and my coach sat out because of this HN player who transferred I would be pissed! Too bad Kevin didnt have any loyalty to his team or school because this all could have been avoided. He was getting plenty of recgonition right where he was. But oh wait he didnt transfer for that……..YA RIGHT!!!!!!

Who cares why he transferred? What difference does that make? Does it hurt HN if he plays? Glory days… Pride comes before the fall.

Punish the kid for leaving… Very adult of you.

      • Roger
        September 14, 2016 at 3:55 pm

Who cares? Every other school in the state that follows the rules care. The teams in SH division that want fair competition care. Shrewsbury would have cared if they used an illegal player and they lost. Give a call to Leominster, Wachusett, St Johns, or Algonquin… See if it’s a big deal.

        • Bill
          September 14, 2016 at 4:11 pm

You’re making too big a deal about HS football!

It’s an extra-curricular activity at the kids school. He’s a HS kid. He transferred schools. Legally. But the SPORTS rules trump the kids right to participate in the extra-curricular activity! Would it be a difference if the kid played a mean trumpet and made the band better?!? (There are competitive band competitions…) Or, was a computer whiz and wrote great code? (There are competitive computer programming competitions in HS.) He’s one kid that happens to play football… Let the kid participate… If his family breadwinner lost their job and had to move to Western MA for employment, would MIAA be such a stickler for paperwork? It’s a douchy thing to do to a kid.

          • Roger
            September 14, 2016 at 4:30 pm

If football is just an extra curricular activity, then tell him to drop it and just focus on school. You know just like I know it is much more than that. Schools that win championships get perks and bonuses. And a coach like the guy at SH is lying through his teeth for saying this is about anything except winning.

Band and computer competitions are not run by the MIAA, if they were they would fall under the same rules. If the kid moved to western MA because his parents got a new job, he would be able to play. In that situation, he wasn’t recruted. You don’t seem to understand that. The rules are there to make sure the competition is fair.

Just as a side note, I know coaches at 2 of the schools I mentioned that were in the same division as SH. Both said if that kid plays they would be contesting the game, regardless if they win or lose. He made a terrible choice over the summer, now he needs to put on his big boy pants and deal with it.

          • Roger

I find it funny that all the turtle riders want this kid to keep playing games despite blatantly violating the rules about student athlete transfers, but want the kid from Doherty crucified even though he broke no rules. And don’t give me the crap Turtleboy tried to pass off about the student handbook saying he needs to be a good citizen. That refers to not getting arrested or getting into other sorts of legal trouble outside of school, not a lack of standing for the national anthem.

If the cracks journalist at TBS bothered to interview people directly involved instead of the nobodies he knows at SH, you would find out the exact reason he chose SH after he didnt go through with the prep school was to be more visible for college recruiters. That is in direct violation of the rule put forth by the MIAA. He did this to himself.

Why wouldn’t he be in the pictures? He’s the AD just as any other AD would be when the school’s athletes are signing their “Letters of Intent”. So, TB the ones that don’t agree with your position are Morons? you sound like a true Moonbat Democrat with that philosophy.
How about this kid was basically promised a better D1 scholarship opportunity by leaving Holy Name because Pucko and Lindstrom are buddies. So, this kid just gives up pretty much a full tuition scholarship at Holy Name to attend a public school for a better D1 opportunity? There’s been a few that came out of Holy Name with D1 offers, if he were smart he wouldn’t have listened to the “adults”. He would’ve been recruited regardless.

You better see a Dr. this “hard on” for Holy Name and Manzello has lasted more than 4 hours!!!

Follow the rules, it’s that simple. You seem so hypocritical with your stance on this.

Mensah himself admitted his motivation to go to SH was a better opportunity to secure a FOOTBALL scholarship. This is against the rules.

You sound like a little B when you point out others transgressions to make your point.

Would you let turtleboy get away with being such a puss about explaining away why one wrong is OK because others have done it too?

I like your blog and almost always agree with you, but SH and a bunch of adults conspired to “help” a kid who just so happens to also be a football stud, easy to do right? Tell me the last non-athlete Worcester resident that SH parents have worked so hard to help out and maybe if there are other examples I might be compelled to let the entire SH crew off the hook. Until then, please cut the crap with this story. You are totally wrong.

Talk about a 180, I actually think I hate this blog now. The first story was understandable, but this follow up is puke worthy.

What did you want Holy Name to do? Lie on the form 200 for a kid who did the wrong thing after being influenced by misleading adults fueled by their own desire to win HS football games?

TB you are so wrong here it’s mind blowing.

Lastly, the ads in this blog nearly give me a seizure every time I load this page, wtf.

Yeah… fuck that KID. Thinking about his future… selfish little shit.

SH parent didn’t have to help any other kid out… If the kid transferring was great at trigonometry or algebra and kicked ass on the chess team, there would be no story.

HS football is HUGE for alumni… (Just go into Lazo’s Cafe any night and here how AWESOME Southbridge football was in the 70’s)

      Let the kid play.

I say “F” anyone who can’t follow the rules or seek out advice when things seem too good to be true. Good life lesson I am sure.

So which is it? Football is meaningless or meaningful? Does it matter if it’s football on the way to a D1 scholarship or something you talk about a whatever cafe you happen to be at?

What do you talk about at the cafe Bill?

It’s a ball game for the kids… A school extra curricular… The adults are screwing it up. Make those rules that are arbitrarily followed… If the kid would have gone to Cheshire, the MIAA had no authority to do anything… But he stayed in MA…

He’s learning a lesson alright… play the establishment’s game or else. Respect the master’s authoritah.

Good thing they have the power to kill a good kids future. Good on um.

Rules are so hard to follow when they don’t fit your agenda, bitter pill to swallow.

A ball game for the kids, that sounds like U3 soccer buddy.

Yep… Sorry kid… rules are rules… bitter pill… sorry about those scholarships… should have played the game we laid out for you….

When you actually are being damaged by the system that other put in place against you, yes, you are a victim to that system. The kid isn’t allowed to play the game.

Just because you sucked at whatever made you “special” don’t take it out on a kid that just wants to play the game at the school he attends.

High school football IS basically U3 soccer… They’re kids. it’s not professional. He attends the school. His being at the school isn’t an issue. MIAA is not the NCAA as much as they’d like to think they are. You are taking HS football WAY too seriously. And hurting a KID in the process. But rules are rules… Stick with that crutch.

The rules are what they are. If the other commentators are truthful, you should be advocating for a rule change to allow recruiting and changing schools to win more at football instead of saying the rules should be ignored.

So HN recruited this kid for his academic prowess.
Or maybe the church is mad they brought him to this country and now he has forsaken them.

Scholarships are huge today for high school althelets…. Holy name should have been doing their job by helping the kid get the looks he deserves…..they dropped the ball and the kid should be able to go wherever is best for him….

Looks like the MIAA thinks they are the NCAA… Same type of BS rules about transfers… And the colleges OWN those kids.

This is a high school extra curricular activity… No Bowl game or TV money involved… Let the kid participate in his schools extra curricular activity!!

It’s his option to go school choice as its any students choice to attend a private catholic high school. He’s in all those pictures because he’s the athletic director and supports his student athletes. Guys done a lot more good than you know and your clear bias toward shepherd hill fueled this article. That signature is out of his hands now so don’t go shaming a guy who’s done a lot of good for a lot of kids because of one kids selfish decision to leave. Holy name hired a new coach who’s only coached youth level football his entire life. Mensah realized he wouldn’t get the looks he deserved in that offense and is the entire reason why he transferred. Told the coach that himself. School choice is meant to benefit students academically and this was made for no academic reason whatsoever

Why he transferred should make NO DIFFERENCE!! He’s a kid… going to a school… being kept from HIS SCHOOL’S extra curricular activity! You’re taking high school football FAR too seriously! Be a fucking adult and let the kid play a ballgame!

You broke this story? You quoted the T&G in your last post. If you wrote it first how did you get those quotes?

You really have to be a special kind of stupid to follow this crap.

The part that TB broke was the part about the MIAA rules and the fact that Holy Name AD is refusing to sign the waiver.

The part TB quoted in the last article, in which TB included all those details about the MIAA & the Holy Name AD, was part of a game summary that included the fact that the young man didn’t play, and that the coach sat out with him. TG did not explain why this happened.

So, yes, TB broke the story.

      Reading comprehension is your friend.

If the T&G mentions it first, they broke it. Doesn’t matter that Turtleboy gave more info, the first one to publish it is the one that broke it.

Let me know if that is a concept too difficult for you to understand. I’ll be happy to slow down for you.

That’s crap. There is a HUGE difference between reporting that the kid didn’t play and doing some research and reporting the reason WHY the kid didn’t play.

It mentions why… A dispute with the MIAA.
