As most of you know I was a former public school teacher for 11 years, having taught in both an urban (Worcester) and suburban (Dudley-Charlton) atmosphere. A big reason I wanted to get out of teaching was that so called “accountability” programs implemented by the state were doing more harm than good to public education. Basically schools and teachers are assessed on the standardized test scores, graduation rates, attendance rates, and suspension rates of their students. As a result an emphasis is put on standardized testing, and schools make sure NOT to suspend poorly behaved students because it will look bad to the state. I’ve seen it with my own eyes a million times after writing kids up for terrible behavior, only to see no punishment doled out.

Education reform puts the entire focus on kids who are putting no effort in, instead of on the kids who want to be there and are doing what they’re supposed to do. This is the exact opposite of what the Japanese do, which is why they live longer than us and have surpassed us technologically. When we ignore our best and brightest we don’t improve as a society.

This is idiotic because teachers have very little control over how kids do on a standardized test, and they really only get the kids for a small fraction of the day. Kids who come from messed up homes with little structure don’t do as well as kids who come from more affluent homes where parents value education. It’s really not that hard to understand.

I always hated movies like Dangerous Minds because they gave the public the idea that all you needed to do was be Michelle Pfeiffer and wear jeans to school and you could magically take the worst kids and get them to perform. The idea that urban schools are filled with kids who are desperate to do well and go on to college, but whose biggest barriers are the teachers they have and the schools they attend, is pure fantasy. When I was in Worcester I had kids who regularly missed 50-60 days of school a year, kids who were sexually assaulted, kids in and out of the foster system, kids whose parents didn’t feed them, kids who had no curfew and ran the streets all night, kids whose parents are junkies, etc. No rational person should believe that teachers should be held accountable when those kids fail the MCAS at the end of the year.

I bring it up because I thought of that when I saw this story out of Rhode Island.

Charges of racism and cyber-bullying erupted over the weekend in a Twitter fight between two Rhode Island lawmakers, one of them a black female Democrat and the other a white male Republican. The issue: the state of the education system in Rhode Island, as dismal student test scores have prompted the Democratic leaders of both the House and the Senate to elevate “school reform” to priority status in the 2019 legislative session.

It began with a series of tweets by Rep. Marcia Ranglin-Vassell early Saturday morning, including this one: “Only when we recognize that our students are more than test scores, more than data, and only when we begin to value their teachers will we begin to see real and sustained improvements in education#ITeach.”

Stop right there. She had me until the last part. You can’t tell the taxpayers, or anyone for that matter, that they’re not allowed to have opinions. That’s just anti-American, anti-freedom nonsense.

Until that last sentence she was spot on though. Every “expert” I ever dealt with as a teacher had never worked in an actual classroom. These people see a chart, they see that test scores are low, and they think that just “holding teachers accountable” will fix them. All this leads to is 1) teaching to the test, and 2) cheating scandals. Ever notice how you never see cheating scandals in suburban districts? Because at schools like Shepherd Hill we never even talked about MCAS. We knew the kids would do well because most of them came from good homes and were decent students.

If you want teachers to teach to the test then they will. But your kid’s education will suffer in the meantime, because life is not a standardized test. They won’t be doing any interesting lessons, or learning about things outside of the curriculum, because if it’s not on the test it doesn’t matter. That’s a terrible way to run your educational system.

I don’t tell cops or firefighters how to do their job, and I hate it when other people do. If you’ve never run into a burning building or had to take down someone who is resisting arrest, then I don’t care what your opinion on how to do things is. Same applies to teaching. However, you’re certainly allowed to have your opinions.

This prompted a reply from a Republican, who represents Wright’s Chicken Farm and happens to be a lawyer.

I mean, what’s to disagree with? I probably disagree with this guy when it comes to education reform, but he’s allowed to have an opinion. He was elected by the taxpayers to represent their interests. This is how democracy works.

Then she did this.

Stop making teachers look bad!! God I hate this more than anything. This is why teachers get a bad name, because of morons like this. Racist attitudes? He literally said that we should respectfully listen to each other. Do you understand how simple minded and lazy you have to be to call that racist? That reason alone disqualifies her from being an educator. All she has to do is just stick to the facts – you can’t judge school performance based on standardized test scores. Instead she whines about “cyber bullying” and racism, because a guy respectfully disagreed with her.

He once again responded and chose not to stoop to her level.

“If you can’t handle criticism you shouldn’t be in office.”

Pretty simple. She of course responded by victimizing herself.

When I was teaching I hated the fact that people like this represented us as a whole. I was in the union, and proud to be. I still support unions. But the fact of the matter is that the dumbest people possible always end up speaking for the group, and as a result teachers get a bad rep. I can assure you that your children’s schools have plenty of great teachers in them, and that they’re not all as dumb as this individual.

However, instead of apologizing for baselessly calling a guy racist she decided to double down with more identity politics.

Oh shut up. You are an embarrassment to teachers everywhere. If you think that baseless virtue signaling on Twitter is what we need in our elected officials or our teachers then you deserve to be neither.

Education reform is simple and revolves around one thing – we have to accept that some kids will fail. “No child left behind” is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. Some kids needs to be left behind, because that’s how capitalism works. Once you have that baseline you can do great things. Stop having your system revolve around kids who don’t do the work. Accept the fact that some kids just aren’t good at school, and let them know that they can still make six figures with just a high school degree if they learn how to make themselves valuable. I had plenty of kids who did awful in school who have grown up to be successful adults, many of who own businesses. If a school has low test scores for a year that’s OK, so long as teachers are showing up and doing their job. Test scores will fluctuate year to year based on the kind of kids you have. The class of 2009 at Shepherd Hill was much worse than the class of 2008. I found this out the hard way. Quite frankly, the ones who should be held accountable are the parents, but they never are. If your kid misses 50 days of school then you lose your kid to DCF. If your kid is failing all his classes and you’re not making an effort to contact his or her teachers then you lose your kid to DCF. Kids aren’t failing because of schools, they’re failing because of shitty parents.

Once in adult actually says “don’t bully me”, I immediately lose all respect for said adult. Period!

You support unions yet this is precisely what you get with a teachers union. Unqualified, entitled, lazy, ignorant, echo chamber useful idiots and subversives posing as educators. Don’t blame teaching to the tests. Children aren’t educated in schools – they are purposely dumbed down and indoctrinated on what to think, not how to think. Liberal parents have long ceded the responsibilities of raising their children to the propagandists on the Left, which is why we now have generations of these lemmings voting for the Dims that created this system.

BTW – Love the book. Kept it old school and bought the paperback.

Unfortunately, Ranglin Vassell is only the second most stupid member of the RI legislature.

Its no wonder why RI state workers immediately move out the second that they vest their state pensions (mostly to Florida, which has no state income tax and no state estate tax-they realize that having RI take money back will only create more insidious parasites like Ranglin Vassell)

BTW-Why would someone voluntarily name themselves as almost a Vassal–aka slave? Is that why she is so mad?

Never thought It would be possible, but the word “racist” has no meaning anymore. They use when they have no logical response. Congrats Liberals!!!

Straight out of the liberal playbook. How to “win” an argument in 2018-19:

    1. “you’re bullying me”
    2. “you’re a racist”
    3. “RACIST!”
    4. Discussion over

Ah yes ! Of course !
When you are black, and a white person calls you out on your bullshit…..it’s racism !
What these fucking morons don’t realize is that every time they scream “racism” for non-existent racism, they cheapen the word and lose more credibility for “the cause”.
    The man presented facts.
    Suddenly, facts are racist?
And this woman considers herself educated?
She is actually in the business of educating young minds?
    Wow.
    Just fucking wow.

I totally get why black ‘women’ hate White Men. Just look at the mug on this sasquatch. If I had to come home to that every night, I would stick a pencil in my eye until it came out the back of my head. I can smell her picture. It smells like the camel cage at the brockton fair. Just because you got the shit end of the stick in the gene pool, you try to take it out on us. EEO is the weapon. Go to Popeye’s and relax with the coon special, you hag.

Well said Uncle. What blows my mind is the (R) rep said nothing to trigger racism but yet because you’re white, disagree with a black and have an opinion?

Felt the same as I was reading the blog. It’s ridiculous out there, air your opinion but if you dare disagree with a black person = instant racist. Wtf glad she doesn’t represent me. Who’s the racist in that exchange? Lord knows it is t the white guy.

  • The Answer Is Vouchers
    January 9, 2019 at 10:31 am

Every child should receive a voucher and the parent should be allowed to decide which school that child will attend. If it is a school outside of the problem “no child left behind” public school system and that child fails in that new system; they can go back to the public schools or roam the streets. The only way that public schools succeed is by competition and unions only make it lazy and doomed to failure, all of the other ‘issues’ are immediately correctable but you will never see any movement without competitive pressure.

The level of paranoia in some black folks is unreal. This women is disconnected from reality and has no business being in a leadership position. It’s not because she’s black, its because she’s paranoid. I was in the military and I’ve worked under more than a few good back females. Their approach was much more pragmatic,: they worked hard and led by example.
