Remember this chick from Lowell?

Screen Shot 2016-04-17 at 8.25.01 AM

She was the Lowell High School senior who was panhandling for college tuition while also using a GoFundMe because her irresponsible parents couldn’t afford to pay for her to become a doctor. Her name is Emily Stutz and apparently this scheme turned out to be brilliant. Check out this story from the Boston Globe:

Emily Stutz always wanted to go to college and become a doctor. She just never thought she would need to resort to fund-raising for help with tuition. But with her parents in financial turmoil and only $1,000 saved from baby-sitting and other odd jobs, the Lowell High School senior sat down at her computer last month and made a public appeal for donations on the crowdfunding website gofundme.com.

“My parents have had immense financial struggles and simply cannot come up with $20,000-$30,000 a year, nor are they able to co-sign a loan for me,” she wrote.

“I have no other adults in my life who are able to co-sign and I am at a loss. I see my dream of becoming a doctor slip further and further away as the days pass by so I’ve decided I am going to do whatever it will take to get myself to college.”

When she checked the site the next morning, she was stunned. She had already received $800. Sensing momentum, she went to a busy shopping mall in Lowell and panhandled for parts of two days last month, raising another $600. That was just the beginning. In less than a month, she raised $24,170, with 474 donating.

screen-shot-2016-04-18-at-9-37-53-am

She’s decided not to go far for college. She’ll continue to live at home and will commute to the University of Massachusetts Lowell. The $24,170 she raised will pay for about two years of tuition.

Stop right there!! She’s going to UMass-Lowell and living at home?? Do you know what a year’s tuition and fees costs at Lowell? $13,427. But here’s what she said when she started her panhandling scam:

After applying at several schools, Stutz said she has been offered between $11,000-$18,000 in financial aid. But she still needs additional finances to attend the universities she hopes to attend.

Wait, she already had $18,000 in aid, and now she’s going to a school that costs less than that per year? So not only will she graduate from college without ANY debt, she’s also being paid to go there. This is how stupid people were who actually donated money to her campaign. Because God forbid you have some debt when you graduate from college. Why should you have to borrow and pay back money for an expensive postsecondary education? That’s no fair!!

Plus, the selling point in her sob story was this:

“My parents have had immense financial struggles and simply cannot come up with $20,000-$30,000 a year, nor are they able to cosign a loan for me.”

They can’t come up with $30,000 a year. Translation – this is the amount I need in donations because my parents are irresponsible. Then she ends up going to a school that costs less than half of that. In other words, she was lying the whole time.

Stutz, stunned by the outpouring of support, said she hopes her campaign will bring more attention to rising college costs.

“I just wanted people to realize that there are kids out there who are forced to choose between submerging themselves in debt or not going to school,” said Stutz, 18, who was accepted by seven colleges.

Yes Emily, there are some kids who are faced between choosing lots of debt or not going to that particular school. But that’s just because they think they’re too good for state schools. And state schools are still affordable, as you will see when you graduate from Lowell with zero debt to your name. The problem is that your guidance counselors aren’t telling your peers to go to UMass instead of Boston College. Instead we’re telling kids that they should be able to go to whatever college they wanna go to.

“She’s a good kid; she’s a victim of my bad finances,” explained her father, Han Stutz. Stutz and his wife, Katheryn, are special education teachers in Lowell’s public schools, with a combined salary of about $140,000 a year.

But because they are still paying off their own college loans and have other debt, the couple recently told their daughter they could not cosign her loans.

“I’m proud of her, because in the last week she has shed more light on the whole paying-for-college crisis than anyone I can think of,” said Han Stutz. The couple has two other children, ages 10 and 8.

Wait…..what??? These people make a combined $140,000 a year??? And their daughter is panhandling because they couldn’t find a way not to blow all that money??!!! How are they not ashamed and embarrassed by the fact that their daughter has been “reduced to this” because of their own supposed bad investments? Because they certainly should be ashamed with themselves. What are these “bad finances” they’re talking about? Last year they took the whole family to Disney World:

Screen Shot 2016-04-17 at 8.56.27 AM

So how bad could their finances be? Ya know who never went to Disney as a kid? Turtleboy. Because the Turtleboy family lived within their means. We couldn’t afford five plane tickets to Orlando, $500 a day in park passes, and $150 per night for a hotel room. So we got in the station wagon and took a road trip to Toledo instead. And I got dibs on the backseat.

According to the Institute for College Access & Success, Massachusetts college graduates in 2014 had an average debt of more than $29,000.

$29,000 in debt? Oh, you mean like a car loan? How will you ever survive owing that much money? It’s just such nonsense. People complain about debt and all this other crap a lot in this country. But we do pretty well here in America. We’re living in homes that are heated and we all have cable television and Wifi. Sure, we’re gonna pay a shitload of money in interest to big banks by the time we die. But in the mean time we all get cars, homes, and college degrees in gender studies. I guess I’m just sick of people whining about debt. It’s part of life. Get over it.

“I learned that if you have something that you stand for and believe in, you have to go out there and do what it takes,” Emily Stutz said.

Go out there and do what it takes? You started a GoFundMe and you panhandled. You reduced yourself to the tactics of a crackhead. And what exactly were you “standing for?” The right to get someone else to pay for you to go to state school down the street?

Screen Shot 2015-12-01 at 10.29.56 AM

The bottom line is that I’m not even mad at Emily. I’m actually kind of jealous that I didn’t think of this scam first. Turtleboy should’ve found some chump high school kid and put them up to this if we agreed to split the profits 50-50. Because at the end of the day Emily got the last laugh. She suckered all these morons with her suburban sob story about needing $30,000 a year, and then she ended up going to Lowell and living at home. Jokes on you fools who fell for it!!!

P.S. This girl seems really nice and she has a lovely family. We’re not mad at her, we’re mad at the morons who taught her that begging for money is cool.

Emily is a liar and a fraud. As soon as she raised more than $26,000 from her gofundme site, her parents went out and bought new cars, and gave her one of her cars. Her sister and brother attend private school, and her parents are planning to build a new home. So much for all of the financial hardship she claimed her parents were experiencing. To make matters worse, she no longer plans to go to medical school. Shame on you, Emily, for ripping a lot of hardworking people off!

She could have went to a state college for free. Pubi never was able to go to Disney as a child and worked every summer and spring break. Anyone who donated is a fool but a fool and his or her or “?” money is soon to be separated.

People donated, and chose to do so knowing it will be going towards college. That was their choice. At least the money wont be going into her arm

Money doesn’t cure every thing, and you can tell her her words and actions that she doesn’t have it in her to work hard. Giving her this money is just enabling her excuse making and dodging personal responsibility. So she can now start school, but college courses aren’t easy, and I’m not very confident she will be willing to work hard when the time comes. Will prob drop out by year 3 with some weak excuse for her laziness.

Bet she goes on more vacations now too, keep an eye on that Facebook page. And blows a bunch of the cash on non-school stuff before the first day of school, and still tries for financial aid and loans.

All in on the anti buffet crew. All I can think of when watching people stuff their faces at those places is how bad they will all be destroying a toilet in about 2 hours.

Alright already what ever happened to getting a job while in college? I worked as a bartender, made real good money at that time and between undergrad and post grad I was only 15k in debt. Paid that off in no time. What in the fuck of all collegiate flying fucks do these kids want? A total free pass? No side job just go to college and drink fucking beer all day long? Wouldn’t that be the ultimate option.

Newsflash kiddies: You got to earn it to make it in this world and stop the SJW bull shit already and grow the fuck up.

I’m with fiesty on the buffet thing. When I was a kid my mother use to take us to big boys(abdows) in Webster square for the breakfast buffet, and we loved it. Unlimited pancakes and French toast. The best. Then I grew up and the whole dirty hands, hairy arms, sneezing, heavy breathing customers thing freaked me out. It’s long gone now,but I will never eat at a buffet, ever. Except this one time in Nigrill,Jamaica, but there was lots of alcahol involved.

I might be wrong but I don’t think you need a parent to cosign a student loan. If you are under 18 you might but that’s only because you aren’t technically old enough for the loan. Doesn’t matter what the credit ratings are and it never effects the ratings of the cosigner. But once 18 they hand out student loans like candy. All that her parents not signing loan paperwork says is that they don’t trust her to pay her bills, they think it’s a joke that she wants to be a doctor because she’s a moron, or she’s just a lying sack of shit. If she asked me for money top help pay tuition I’d laugh in her face. But if she was asking for help paying for student loans I might help if she was working in the field she studied. I’ll note that you don’t have to pay your loans until you’re done with college.

How do you claim that $24k in your tax forms?….That’s what I wanna know!

    • JenB
      May 21, 2016 at 9:03 pm

You can give $11,000 per year to an individual without any tax consequence for either party. It might be $12K now…not sure. Anything above that requires completing a Gift Tax return by the person giving the money, not the receiver. The receiver doesn’t have any tax consequence whatsoever. Also, my daughter is a beneficiary of a college trust fund that pays for her college as long as she maintains a certain GPA each semester. The amount is above the $11K amount, but according to the tax attorney, who is the trustee, says there is no tax consequence for the beneficiary of the trust. I wish I could tell you why there is none, but I don’t know. That said this girl will have ZERO tax consequence on this money, because most likely no one gave over the yearly limit of $11K. She could literally get $11k from 50 different people and have zero tax consequence. At least that was how it was explained to me when I worked for multiple CPAs and tax attorneys.

The last laugh will be on her she has 4 yrs of college so how is she going to afford to pay for the next 3 yrs. Her parents should be ashamed first of all if everyone reading this contacts the schools Financial aide office to report fraud she has to legally give her parents income on the financial aid application.

Moral of the story: Never give anything to panhandlers. There are professional organizations and businesses funded by misguided charity and the general goodwill of working people in Worcester.

TB I don’t know if I agree when you say she was lying the whole time. It seems like she’s actually trying to put the money to good use. Why go to college and pay for housing for a year when you can stay local, live at home, and go for two?

If she was an “ILLEGAL” Mexican she would get “free” college, “free” food, “free” housing, “free”medical, “free”license, “free” everything, since she was born in America, (unlike obama), she gets NOTHING for free, she has to work to support herself AND those Mexicans !!!

Turtleboy missed the point of what’s going on in America on this one. This kid is screwed because her parents work and have jobs. If she had parents on welfare like Big O she would go to college for free and/or get instant loans in Obama America. They call in “need based” scholarships and loans. 140k doesn’t mean crap anymore cause everyone who bought a house in the last 15 years is screwed in Obama America. Working class people have no savings and the remortgage ATM is gone. It’s all part of the welfare scam Massachusetts. Most of those kids won’t even bother to go to college because they know if they get pregnant they get a 50-70,000 dollar (benefits) a year job as a welfare recipient. Free housing, food, best health care on planet with zero co-pay and 365 days off a year.
