Tom Quinn over at Worcester Magazine wrote an interesting article today about the changing landscape of media in Worcester. It’s long, but it’s a good read. And obviously you can’t have a conversation about media in Worcester without talking about the Turtle. One of the people he interviews is Noah Bombard from Masslive, who was clearly suffering from post-traumatic Turtle-induced butthurt:

Now, Bombard said, blogs like Turtleboy Sports just “want to watch the world burn.”

Turtleboy has become something of a social media sensation. Sometimes cutting, pasting and screen-shotting material from Twitter, Facebook and other sources, and combining it with an often-twisted and controversial personal viewpoint, the blog has generated thousands of followers on its website and Facebook page. The blog has indicated it does not speak with any media representative in the city other than reporter Pat Sargent from the Worcester Sun.

12919836_10208044879013445_6441415091664293530_n

“There are sensational stories, there are outrageous stories, and as journalists it’s our job to convey that,” Bombard said. “But when you flip that on its head and everything you do is sensationalized, everything you do is cliche, everyone you write about you plug into some sort of formula, that’s not journalism. That’s propaganda, that’s bashing – the common mantra of journalists is ‘afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted.’ And I fear too often there are websites and blogs that do the opposite.”

12973509_10154346868128029_3882285123884644656_o

LOL. How mad are these people? Don’t they understand what a bad look this is for them? “That’s not journalism?” Never heard that one before.

In his defense, Masslive is a million times more legitimate as a “journalistic” outlet than the Telegram. Go to their Facebook page. They report the news there and they do a pretty good job of it. Unlike the Telegram and Gazette, who gets the vast amount of their views by paying Spanky McFarlane to write outrageous racist things, and then brings back Old Balls from the dead when the views go down.

12966232_10206650149316050_513478892_n

Anyway, I get why Noah Bombard is mad. He’s been in journalism his entire career and he’s getting destroyed in the ratings by a boy on a turtle. Our backup Facebook page has 11,000 likes, which is 4,000 more than Masslive’s primary page. Our primary page of course is coming up on 26,000 followers. We’re not even really in the same stratosphere.

But our biggest beef with what he said is that we want to watch the world burn. He is referencing this blogwhich we wrote about Masslive in January. Basically they listed the names of 13 hookers who got arrested in a sting, and it got Dick Poole and all the other butthurts all riled up:

Screen Shot 2016-01-25 at 12.45.30 PM

We had no problem with Masslive printing their names, and we pointed out how this is what gets people to click on their articles, and at the end of the day, this is what pays the bills. Here’s the paragraph:

All the media does is supply a demand. People wanna watch the world burn. We don’t wanna click on articles about the local girl scouts who are raising money for the animal shelter. People wanna find out which person from their high school ended up being a Main South prostitute. This is all that matters to us.

So yea, when we said that people just want to watch the world burn, we were referencing your “journalism” Noah. Not ours. We don’t print lists of hookers on Turtleboy Sports because quite frankly we don’t have the time for it. Anyone can publicly humiliate some hookers. It’s cheap, but it’s not ground breaking enough for Turtleboy Sports.

Anyway, just to prove to Noah how dumb his comments were, here’s a whole bunch groundbreaking pieces of journalism in TBS history that don’t involve listing the names of 13 hookers from Main South:

Exposing Laughlin Kennel. They ended up getting a cease and desist from the town of Oxford. Turtleboy was the only news outlet that had horrifying videos and pictures from the inside, along with interviews with former employees.

Mosaic. Fraudulent organization has funding pulled by City Manager. Every singe new outlet, including Masslive, went out of their way to ignore this story for as long as they could, because they had too much pride to admit that Turtleboy covers real news.

Turtleboy exposes woman who cheated in local charity road race. Rightful winners receive their new prizes from fire department.

Spencer-East Brookfield School District. Major corruption and coverups from superintendent, principal, and school committee exposed repeatedly. We filed FOIA’s to get payments to lawyers and even had Kevin Hayes followed around by our field reporters, proving that he was doing side work for the superintendent.

Vernon Hill Elementary. Ten of 19 teachers quit because of tyrannical and unethical behavior of the principal.

Albert Haynesworth and Pat’s Towing. Former New England Patriots fat ass plots with disgraced towing company to get back city contracts.

SMOC housing. Corrupt organization getting checks and high salaries by throwing junkies in unsupervised homes together.

unnamed-19

21 biggest dumps towns and cities in Massachusetts. Extensive research to scientifically quantify which places are worse than Worcester.

Forest Grove teachers bullied by students on social media.

Worcester crappy plowing jobs exposed, contrary to the lie told by Paul Moosey that the roads are fine. Ed Augustus issues apology. Turtleboy refuses to accept.

Donald Trump death threat on Twitter leads to girl getting fired, and then calling the cops on Turtleboy.

Greenfield neighbors who humiliated their cop neighbor for a confederate flag, turned out to be teachers with incredibly inappropriate displays on social media.

Orange fire department blamed by the Greenfield Recorder for 2 girls dying. Turtleboy finds out that the people making the claims are known criminals and local scumbags.

Lisa Dyer email calling Janice Harvey racist for using the term “color blind.” This never would have made the news if we didn’t report it.

Anything from Joe Social Worker.

Derek Thomas running up million dollars bills by taking 2-3 free ambulance rides a day.

Trash on Vernon Hill. A real eyesore from the highway. We exposed and in two days it was magically cleaned up, per the orders of the Mass DOT.

11120101_10153113951557752_2096456824_n

Courthouse Jumper. We broke the story and were the only outlet with pictures.

David Njuguna bragged about driving 160 mph on Facebook, a couple years before killing Trooper Clardy on the highway.

Worst street for potholes in Worcester. Within a year every street listed was paved.

There ya go Noah. That’s just a start. Some light reading for you so you can see what real journalism looks like. You guys are better than the Telegram, but don’t think for one second that you’re even approaching our level.

Noah Bombard = all style, zero substance. Guarantee that he was home schooled. FYI, Moxie was created to curb male impotence.

    Bombard a journalist, my ass!

He’s nothing but a pompous twinkie who has been making an ass of himself since way back.

The fact is, he really sucks at what he does, even for a non-journalist. His style is pure clickbait.

It should not be the case but TBS is one of the few credible sources out there (worcester sun is the other).

Actually, real journalists aren’t afraid to use their real name – they don’t hide behind anonymous blogs.

Haven’t read this argument for a while.

Nom de guerre is as old as journalism itself.

Nom de plume, Pekka. Nom de guerre is generally reserved for underground military service like mercenaries or revolutionaries, mostly for security reasons. Pretty sure they’re mandatory in the French Foreign Legion as well.

Yeah, you’re right there. Better choice.

I know that nom de guerre can be for combat or for “other activities,” but you’re choice is better.

The whole hooker thing, The activity is against the law. Why shouldn’t names be out in the public via the forms of media available? How is prostitution different from embezzlement? More and more stories in the news about people with positions of trust, stealing money to support drug or gambling problems.

  • Feedbacker

Turtleboy, your journalism is extremely inconsistent. Many of the articles you posted are wonderful journalism on your part, but many of your articles are just lazy and it’s tough to call them journalism. Many articles, like the one about the Barre police chief, make it clear you just browse Facebook and post the story without going out and doing investigation of your own. But sometimes you do investigation like on Laughlin, which again was great.

Most media outlets do slant one way or the other. With that being said, when a blog or online news outlet singles out individuals with regularity, there is probably more than meets the eye going on.

I’ve suscribed to the T&G since 95. In the last 2 or 3 years the content has gone downhill. The local news section is shit compared to what it use to be. Now they throw in this TV guide on Sunday’s and charge me $3 for it and I don’t want it. Seriously, who reads that these days. Old days, sure it was great, but with technology now who needs it. I think the only reason I haven’t cancelled yet is for the obituaries and Al Southwicks column.
Then I discover TBS. I start to get the dirt on lots of interesting things. I’m addicted at this point. After TBS referenced masslive on a story, I checked them out. It’s ok, kind of the same thing as the Telegram. The problem with them is that they are not nearly as interesting or entertaining as TBS. I believe TBS is still in its infancy, and within another couple of years, will be without question, number 1 in Worcester media outlets. Keep up the investigative journalism. People love reading about the dirt you dig up. Especially on Kevin Hayes and the corrupt machine that is the SEBRSS.

I mean he kinda has a point.

Just yesterday you skewed the facts regarding a bill passed in NC to make it seem that the only thing in the bill was what bathroom people are allowed to use, when there is far more to that bill.

You led your readers to believe something that was only part of the truth rather than the whole truth in order to pursue your agenda.

It’s time for the boomers to start to move over and retire. It’s a new day out-there, new generation and new ideas. They had their day for a long time. Now, their days are long gone for most. Accept the new ideas, the old ways are worn-out in many ways. I’m a boomer, I can say this, without prejudice.

I consider myself a level headed contributing member of society, and I believe this blog has done a great job about informing us of corruption, fraud, criminals, feel good stories, and more importantly —–> pointing out the hypocrisy & manufactured outrage that permeate our local & national news. The T&G along with these other publications should realize that TBS is growing by leaps and bounds because it addresses the nonsense out there and call out the frauds. And from a point of view standpoint, every level headed decent patron of this site basically AGREES with what TBS says and glad they have the courage to say it.

I read it everyday. More & more people do as well.
