For once in his life Dan Shaughnessy wrote a really good article in the Boston Globe:

Memo to Boston fans: Larry Bird still loves you and he loves your teams. Even from his home state of Indiana, the Heartland of Deflategate Hate.

“I never root against the Boston teams,’’ Bird said in a phone interview while his Indiana Pacers prepared to face the Celtics at TD Garden Wednesday night. “There’s no sports town like Boston. I don’t care where you go.

“They talk about Chicago and Philadelphia. No. They don’t ever compare to Boston. I mean, there’s ladies in their 90s and they can name every player on the Red Sox and Patriots team. You just don’t have it anywhere like that.

Larry Legend didn’t take it too seriously when he first heard the deflated footballs charge after the Patriots waxed the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC Championship game last January.

“I thought it was a bunch of lying, if you want to know the truth,” said Bird. “That’s something [Bob] Kravitz [Indianapolis sports columnist] came up with, and I never believed any of it.

“It doesn’t really matter. It was written about a lot around the country, but here in Indianapolis, most people knew. We knew the Patriots was going to beat them anyway. I thought it was pretty chintzy. People finally realized they would have beat us anyway. I just laughed about it.

“They got the footballs they played with and we got our footballs. And their footballs beat our footballs.

“I watch every one of the Colts games. I really like them. But my son loves all things about the Patriots. And I never root against the Patriots.”

I have such a Larry Bird pants tent right now and I can’t even attempt to control it. That’s some of the finest Patriots porn I’ve ever read. What a beautiful, beautiful human being. The man lives in Indiana where he was born and raised. But even he can see through the bullshit that is Bob Kravitz. “That’s something that Bob Kravitz came up with.” EXACTLY. Actually, that’s almost the exact wording we used to call out this chiseler months ago. As a matter of fact we took it one step further – we proved WHY he made up Deflategate:

He did it so people would know who Bob Kravitz is. He did it so he could meet Anderson Cooper. He did it so his kids would have a reason to love him. Because without Deflategate he’s an old, miserable, failure from Indiana ranting on about Purdue basketball.

Anyway, what Larry said about people in Indiana admitting that the whole thing was a scam was music to my ears. There’s nothing better than one of our guy’s behind enemy lines reporting about morale, or lack thereof. They wanted to believe they lost because of deflated balls. They wanted some sort of explanation that could explain how a team that just upset the Broncos could lose 45-7. They were desperate for something.

So Bob Kravitz delivered Deflategate to them and they ate it up. But over time they realized he was feeding them a shit sandwich and they had no choice but to recognize the greatness that is Tom Brady. But Larry Legend knew it the whole time, because winners know winners when they see it.

P.S. Larry Bird > Bron-Bron. #FactsOnly

With all due respect, Bill Russell has more rings than Brady, Orr, Williams and Bird combined. (Yeah, it was a smaller league with only 8 teams – which meant Russell played against Wilt Chamberlain all the time.)

Near the end of his career while playing in the Olympics against Russia I’ll never forget the look of awe from the Soviet coach when Bird made a couple of no look behind the back passes. A basketball genius blessed with good old fashioned common sense.

Bird was the best. If James was on the 1980s Celtics, they would have had to make the bench a lot bigger. If the PC NBA still called fouls, James would foul out in 5 minutes every single game.
