So last week in West Springfield authorities discovered and removed a six foot alligator that was living in some guy’s backyard. Naturally they did the only thing they could when they found the dangerous killer animal – sent his ass across the river to Springfield. Now he’s chillin at the Forest Park Zoo, instead of in some random guy’s swimming pool:

MassliveA 6-foot alligator hissed and struggled Thursday as law enforcement personnel, aided by staff from Springfield’s Forest Park zoo, removed it from the yard of a Main Street home. Police were summoned to the property at 660 Main St. about noon, called for reinforcements from the zoo and Environmental Police, and extracted the alligator with two animal control catch poles — with one noose around its neck and the second around the base of its tail.

The alligator was being kept in a backyard enclosure, police said. John R. Lewis, curator for the zoo, said the alligator will be taken there for now. He said the animal looks healthy, “although it’s a little overweight.” West Springfield Police Capt. Michael Banas said police received a call — he doesn’t know from who – about an alligator being kept in a back yard on Main Street. “Sure enough, there was an enclosure with an alligator in it,” he said.

Police have turned the investigation over to Environmental Police, Banas said. Keeping an alligator, or any wild animal, is against state law. Banas said. “You cannot keep wild animals at a residence,” he said. The man who claims to be the owner of the alligator is not being cooperative, Banas said, adding that investigators, however, have yet to confirm who the actual owner is.

Banas said he has no idea how long the alligator had been living in the backyard. “That’s not a baby alligator, that’s a full-grown alligator. He has been there for a while,” he said. Other information on the alligator remains murky as well. “I don’t know what they are feeding it, where they are keeping it, how they are keeping it warm in the winter,” Banas said.

Asked if he has ever encountered such a situation before in law enforcement, Banas replied: “Never in 29 years. Never in 29 years….That is a dangerous, dangerous thing to do.” Lewis said the alligator will be kept in an outdoor enclosure at the zoo, at least until they get further direction from Environmental Police.

In Springfield they have pit bulls. In West Springfield they have alligators.

This story is amazing. The alligator has apparently been here for 26 freaking years!! And it was smuggled here in a suitcase. Either that or he walked here looking for the last Pokemon. This of course was back when you didn’t have to leave your bomb at home when you were flying cross country.

I’ll tell you what they should’ve done with this thing – put it on that island in the Quabbin reservoir with another gator, and have it fight the rattle snakes to the death. Whatever species comes out alive was meant to live, and the other one must go the way of the dodo.

The most amazing part of this story is the fact that this thing survived a tornado and 26 New England winters. How is that even possible? How do you get away with it for that long without getting caught?

And Wally the Gator is probably the only living thing that has ever moved AWAY from Florida and got fatter. I guess that’s what happens when you have a steady diet of steak and cheese every night:

Wally was a bit overfed, Lewis said, adding: “I think he clearly could lose about 30 pounds. According to the Western Mass News report, the alligator may have been fed Philly cheesesteaks and other treats from a neighborhood pizza shop.

In fairness, at least 40-50% of people in Worcester survive on a nightly diet of cheesesteak from the neighborhood pizza shop. Wally will probably outlive all of them too because he doesn’t smoke a pack of Newports every day and his teeth are in better shape.

But yea, obviously you can’t be raising gators in your backyard and not tell anyone. Ya know, because some people have cats and small children, and to Wally it probably all looks like steak and cheese grinders.

The mainstream media has not released the name of the owner who was illegally housing the pet gator, but Turtleboy has his first name because we found this GoFundMe page, in which a friend named Lizz Ramos is trying to solicit money so Tony can get Wally back:

As we all know our neighborhood friend Walter, also known as Wally Gator, was taken from his loving home on August 4th, and re-homed to Forest Park in Springfield leaving his owner, Tony, without his 26 year old four legged friend. Wally was the friendliest gator, raised around family and friends, who has never hurt a soul. He was a spoiled gator, eating chicken and steak regularly. He had his own bedroom and swimming pool for the winter, and safely fenced in outdoor area with a shady garage space for the summer. He was always included on holidays and birthdays, with his room decorated and even birthday hats! Unfortunately it is going to be a challenge for Wally to get home but we’d like to try! From what we know so far, he will likely need an exotic pet permit in order to come home, and there will also be some fines to be paid. Any donations to help Tony bring Wally home would be appreciated! #freewallygator

No. Just no. As you can see, they are a long way from their $5,000 goal. Here’s my question – if it only costs $5,000 to get an exotic pets permit, then why didn’t Tony just get one? He only had 26 freaking years to sign up. Instead of paying $9 for a cheesesteak he could’ve gone to Walmart and gotten some raw chicken instead. The savings over 26 years would easily covered the costs. Something tells me Tony won’t be seeing a dime of this GoFundMe cash and Lizz Ramos is gonna have a fun night out in West Springfield with the proceeds!!

“Wally was the friendliest gator, raised around family and friends, who has never hurt a soul.”

WTF?? Gators are not ‘friendly pets’ – just because you kept him fat and fed doesn’t mean he wouldn’t tear your arm off if the mood struck.

I don’t know why I’m still amazed by the boundless stupidity of people.

This can only happen in the North East. People in the South just grab a gator by the tail and drag it back across the street to water daily.

The crazy cat sister hoarders who live next door were not quoted as saying “we hardly noticed our cats were getting eaten, I know he didn’t eat Mr. Snugglesworth because I’ve used him as a pillow for 40 years!”.

Then again, who’s to say this alligator didn’t fall in love with a female alligator after chatting on the internet and then turned into a delusional violent stalker gator’?

I suppose in a way society is now protected from that fat pet alligator. What if that alligator strayed from the property, bought itself a hoodie and a pistol and then went on a heroin induced rampage and started holding up package stores and Kwikie Marts?

In unrelated news the population of stray cats and skunks just doubled overnight in the town.
