Football really isn’t that big around Massachusetts when you compare it to other states. Every once in a while we toss out a player who goes on to do big things, but for the most part we’re a pretty irrelevant state. Florida, Ohio, California, Georgia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama, Louisiana – those are some states where you can find real players. Football is a blue-collar, man’s man’s game, and New England is really more of the wine and cheese crowd. Up here we focus on dumb things, like education and healthcare.

But yesterday I saw on ESPN.com that a local high school junior is making a pretty big splash in a major way. Sean McKeon plays tight end for Shepherd Hill, and apparently he committed yesterday to the University of Michigan?

Ya got that Michigan. As in Tom Brady, Charles Woodson, Ty Law, Desmond Howard, and Jim Harbaugh. THAT Michigan. Kind of a big deal. Even though as a Notre Dame fan I despise Michigan, you gotta root for a local kid making noise at this level.

My question is, how come I’ve never heard of this kid before? The only part of the Telegram I ever read is the sports section because they actually do a good job covering most high school sports. But I had no idea that one of the top tight end prospects in the country lived so close. Here’s a link to his combine numbers from the New York Nike Football Combine. As you can see, he was easily the top rated player. And check out that 40 yard dash time:

4.69? Do you realize how fast that is for a tight end? Here’s some similar 40 yard dash times for some other tight ends you might recognize:

Hopefully for his sake, he follows the career path of ONE of those guys.

Speaking of Gronk, check out this freaking play right here against St. Peter Marian. It’s like mini-Gronk:

That’s one of the disgusting touchdown runs I’ve ever seen. Apparently he received 19 Division 1 offers, including Virginia, UConn, Temple, Colorado State, Boston College, Syracuse, Pitt, UMass, Old Dominion, Air Force, Delaware, New Hampshire, Bryant, Bucknell, Columbia, Yale, and Harvard. Three Ivy League schools there too. I probably would’ve gone with UMass or UVA, but only because Jim Harbaugh is an absolute psychopath.

Insane. Michigan is one of the top academic schools in the country, so I’m gonna assume this kid can actually spell his name AND tie his shoes – a rarity in Division 1 football. We wrote the other day about Naadir Tharpe’s career going downhill, which was really unfortunate because you wanna root for the local kids to do their thing on a national level. So as long as Sean McKeon doesn’t try to start a rap career, he should be all set. When you see this kid in the NFL in five years, you can say you heard it here first at Turtleboy Sports.

Go Irish!!

I guess the Double Wing dopes produce positions other than lineman.

Don’t take this observation the wrong way, I do think this kid is good and should play D1 ball, but…

#12 got away with a no call on that tackle of the SPM player. This play should have been called back, but that is the way it goes with the fine MIAA officiating. Therefore, this would not be a good example of his talent.

Hope he doesn’t choke away this opportunity like Sheppard Hill did in the Super bowl last season.

*Correction* They choked in the semi-finals before the Super Bowl. I mixed them up with Northbridge, who did choke in the Super Bowl. Damn maroon-colored teams.

US News and World Report ranks UM #29 in the country. The QS World University rankings have it as #23 in the world. Forbes has them at #45.

Obviously different criteria on each list, hence the wide disparity. But your jab is none the less unfounded.

Michigan’s Law School is #1 in the country. Many of its specific undergrad degree programs are individually ranked #1. The overall University is always in the top 1%.
