You think Turtleboy is mean and heartless? Check out what the mainstream media is doing to try to damage the legacies of two poor kids from the Falmouth High School hockey team who died in a car accident a couple days before Christmas:

“An investigation into the crash that killed two Falmouth high school students last December found that the two teens were speeding at the time, and had THC in their systems, Falmouth Police said. James Lavin and Owen Higgins, two 17-year-old Falmouth High hockey team members, were killed in the December 22 crash when the SUV driven by Lavin hit a tree on Thomas B. Landers Road.

The crash happened Dec. 22 as they drove home from hockey practice. Lavin was driving a sedan with Higgins in the passenger seat. Lavin was “traveling recklessly at a high rate of speed, illegally passed another vehicle over a double yellow line, lost control, left the roadway, and struck a tree,” according to a state police investigation. Toxicology reports revealed the pair had marijuana in their systems. Lavin was killed at the scene. Higgins was hospitalized and later succumbed to his injuries.”

I remember this story when it happened. Thinking about these poor families and the timing of it right around Christmas was hard to stomach. And if I recall, the FHS hockey team won their next game back 5-0. Made me tear up a little when I saw it on the news because I just can’t imagine the kind of composure it takes for a bunch of high school kids who are processing this unimaginable tragedy, to take to the ice and win a game like that in their memory. Insane.

This story really hit home, especially because of Turtleboy Jr. This Turtleboy has a daughter and a son. I know a lot of Dads worry about their daughters, but I worry more about my son. All these overprotective Dads who share memes about threatening boys who date their daughters are so cliche. Ultimately they’re allegedly worried that their daughter will get pregnant. I’m not. I trust her to smack any guy who gets too grabby. Because generally speaking I think girls make smarter decisions than boys. I’m a million times more worried that when they become teenagers that Turtleboy Jr. will make worse decisions than Turtle Princess.

I do understand that this can be used as an example for parents to show their kids the dangers of speeding. I get that much. But the THC? If you smoke weed then the THC stays in your system for up to two weeks. They could’ve smoked a bowl at a party a week before. Clearly the implication here is that they were high at the time, because many people reading this won’t know how long THC stays in your system. But they just came from practice and were headed home to see their families who probably wouldn’t approve of them smelling like a hemp shop, so odds are they weren’t smoking a doobey during the ride.

15822873_1396901090329486_410843648484521343_n

Of course the real reason they mentioned THC is because politicians have been feeding us doomsday scenarios about pothead drivers killing people because it’s now legal. Now they’re taking the tragic deaths of two kids, and using them to feed into a political narrative. They’ve basically minimized everything they’ve done during their 17 years on earth, and made sure that this is their long lasting legacy. This is what will come up when people search their names on Google. Pretty shitty.

Anyway, I totally understand that the police have an obligation to release the findings of their investigation. And I agree that the speed factor is something that can be used for parents to show their kids how fragile their lives can be. But the THC shit is irrelevant since they weren’t smoking pot that night, and it’s only being mentioned by the media because they’re looking for clicks in order to profit off of this tragedy. But yea, Turtleboy is the bad guy, and “real journalism” doesn’t try to exploit tragedies for financial gain. Definitely.

Couldn’t possibly be that they were adrenaline filled from a game , stupid teenage boys , and driving fast is a thing. A thing they have not learned to respect yet. That is a likely scenario. I know more people have been pulled over driving too slow stoned. It doesn’t make you want to go fast. That’s a fact. Lol

Thank you turtle boy for being the realist journalist on the east coast!!! Our family was very hurt to see that all over the news this week. However this article felt like a small piece of justice for all of us. The media is terrible and unfortunately only getting worse. I know Owen would’ve loved and appreciated this so thank you.

I have to say that if they were legally drunk I would absolutely think that must have played a role, but even if they did “smoke a dubie” after practice, I do not think it had anything to do with this accident. Speed, for sure, which newly licensed drivers don’t always understand, was probably the only culprit. I think most people can say that have been in a car going way too fast at some time in their life and lucked out. God bless these young men and their families. I lost a sibling right before Christmas to a car accident and can honestly say I will never be the same…almost 40 years later.

Nice clickbait article. The “mainstream media” that first reported this was the cape cod times, a typical regional newspaper, not some biased publication trying to push narratives (unlike this site). And if you actually READ the article you will notice that it is simply publishing the public accident/study that was done and does not blame the THC present as contributing, only that there was excessive speed and illegal maunevers being performed. It’s standard for such a report to be made public and was shared with the boys parents first. So next time instead of trying to stir up controversy trying to be a sad barstool jr. copycat maybe actually educate yourself on the situation first and realize what the report actually says.

      Shout out to Cod Squad
Its sad how many low life’s we have in our society that say such insensitive things when tragedy occurs…..these boys were our boys here in falmouth…and were the same boys in anyone’s town that were loved, they weren’t bad kids, they were the salt of the earth…great kids that were at the top of the world. It was a mistake, a tragedy..and look at all you low life scumbags that sit behind a keyboard and say stupid, insensitive and hurtful things to those that are already crushed by such a tragedy. Like you have been perfect all your life..ha…get over yourself. Friggin people are a beautiful species….WTF!

And factboy….with “it’s standard for this article to be published”. Hey…thanks for the enlightenment bro, but turtleboy is right, this stuff has been all over the media…and for all the neanderthals out there including the losers on facebook stepping all over our hearts, weed isn’t what caused this accident…and wake up factboy…the government is certainly trying to stop the legalization of marijuana so it requires the tox report to be made public…and that report is always blunt. The sound of it when you read it out loud makes it sound like these kids were ripping blunts while they drove around…when in reality they were less than 2 mins down the street after leaving practice…I’m not condoning weed…but cut the shit..that’s not why they died…We will learn from this tragedy….and future generations will learn, but we will also learn how cruel social media can be. Our boys don’t deserve to be used by anti marijuana bozos trying to make a point…there lives were incredible…and anyone that knew them is a better person because they knew them…we miss you boys..Higgy and Lav…salt of the earth.

      PS….let’s get those

Standard to release a report, yes. Not standard to broadcast it all over Facebook and shit. You obviously missed my comment about how plastering this report has hurt many people in this town. I don’t see reports following up on the unsolved murders in Falmouth, or hell they didn’t even release the names of two stupid kids who seriously fought and hit each other with shovels over who the better rapper was between 2pac and K-dot. They respect these fools privacy but not the families of these kids? You should probably take your head out of your ass, they absolutely are using this towards theiranti-marijuana agenda.

The police did not notify me first. I had to hear about it like everyone else. I wrote the police chief a note regarding his lack of discretion but have yet to hear back. Thank you all for your support

Bringing up boys is more worrisome than girls. Boys do not always think of the implications of their actions. In this day and age, if they were drunk and shooting heroin then I would agree on the facts that they were under the influence and the cause of the accident. This was poor judgement on a windy road in Falmouth. This happens in Sandwich, Mashpee, Bourne, Brewster Etc.. These boys were intelligent and had wonderful futures ahead. Do not succumb to media trashing! It happened, it’s done, its tragic.

I had the privledge of being Owen’s teacher and knowing these boys very well as members of our hockey rink and as role models for my son who idolized them as athletes (and who still does).
Owen was a light in my life and our entire town has not been the same since this horrible accident. I think all of the people who even knew them a little know it was an unfortunate mistake that could have been made by any teenager and just happened to be made by these two wonderful young men.

Believe me the children of this town don’t need it plastered in the paper to learn from it. Many were on the scene before the police were and saw things no child should ever have to see. No need to keep reoopening wounds for these already traumatized children.
    I appreciate your reflection.

THANK YOU for this article. I’m from Falmouth and you would not believe the awful comments on Facebook about how stupid these kids were for driving high and some actually went as low to say they deserved this. I knew from the second this report was posted on social media they did it to show weed as bad and dangerous, especially on Cape Cod where the old people are doing everything in their power ro make sure no dispensaries, medical or recreational, are put on Cape Cod. It was very unecessary to post that report to Facebook, I cannot even imagine being the parents reading the things people have been saying. I understand the police have to release the report but they don’t post other accident reports on Facebook, if someone wanted to look into it go for it, don’t broadcast it and dredge this shit up again.

Sorry for the novel. I only know the sister of one of these boys, never knew them, but this had me heated this week.

  • Meh.

They do this to everybody lol. I remember the dude selling cigarettes who got shot by police– “had marijuana in his system”. Same thing with the young race car driver that Tony Stewart hit/killed (for those of you who will say that my first example was somehow justified). Not saying it’s right, but it’s certainly not an uncommon occurance.

  • You high?

If they had been smoking dope, they would have been stopped for driving too slow.

Agreed!!! When I smoke weed I frantically think I’m doing 90 MPH only to look down and see the speedometer at 10. One of the reasons I don’t smoke…. makes me slow & paranoid.

Indeed. Besides the fact that I like my job that pays me well, my interest of weaponology would clash in the same manner as you. I’d probably have every firearm I own in a pile next to a window, as I stared out of it while devouring all the breakfast cereal in the house.

Exactly. If this kid was actually high at the time, and speeding, he would fall outside the normal profile of the stoned driver that pisses everybody off by doing 10mph minimum UNDER the limit.

At first I was worried the media jumping on this might cause the parents to kill themselves thinking they did a poor job with their offspring. Thanks to Turtleboy they know there are people sticking up for them. Thank you for saving lives one blog at a time.

The cops were wrong putting on the old scare the kids report. Double standards prevailed and their facts are wrong. Apologize to the families.

  • JS
    April 6, 2017 at 10:53 am

I agree. There was no indication they were “high” while driving simply because THC showed up in their systems. However, a lot of people think driving high is perfectly acceptable and it is NOT. Just because it is legal, doesn’t make it any less dangerous to drive than driving under the influence of alcohol.
