Montreal Gazettes’ Jack Todd Won’t Stop Talking About How Racist Boston Is Because Of P.K. Subban Tweets

Follow us on Twitter and on Facebook.

So this morning Dennis and Callahan were talking about all the BS that the Boston Bruins had to deal with after a few nudniks tweeted racist shit about PK Subban. They were hitting the nail right on the head, and we agreed with them 100%. Their beef like mine, was that all of this outrage revolved around a handful of morons who wrote really messed up shit on the internet.

Newsflash – this is what happens on the internet. In the comments section of TurtleBoy Sports alone there are frequently comments that will make you find Jesus. This doesn’t constitute news, and it certainly didn’t constitute ANY comment at all from the Bruins. The Bruins organization is not responsible for apologizing for comments made about its opponents on TWITTER!!

D&C mentioned that they didn’t know who the idiots were that were the cause of all this outrage. I’d done some muckraking over the weekend and found out that none of them are Bruins fans, most of them were in high school, and many have deleted their Twitter accounts. However, some of them were still chirping even more offensive shit, because that’s what idiots do.

Now the question is, if I could find out all of this information while riding a magical turtle in Worcester, how could the Boston Globe with all its resources not do the same? Wouldn’t a newspaper with all the reporters it has on hand want to protect the image of Boston from being labeled as a racist city? Oh wait, I forgot that this is the same newspaper that allowed Gish Jen to blame the victims of the Boston Marathon in an op-ed for “failing the Tsarnaevs” the day after the Red Sox celebrated their World Series victory.

Instead the Globe fell in line and apologized for the tweets a bunch of kids in their Mom’s basements made. I would expect that from the Montreal media, but I thought we were better than that. Speaking of Montreal media, D&C referenced an article in the Montreal Gazette. In the words of Peter Laviolette it was “typical – Montreal typical.”

Here’s a link to the article.

Allow me to break down all the idiocy contained in this article. Quotes from Jack Todd’s blog are in italics…

“It follows that booing Chara every time he touches the puck is, in my book, childish and counter-productive.

The same is true of the Boston fans who boo P.K. Subban every time he touches the puck. I would like to see that element of fan behaviour eliminated entirely. Like banging on the glass when players are engaged near it, it makes the fans involved look and sound like a species of intellectually challenged ape.”

Booing your opponents is mean and childish now? Maybe we should start every game off with a group hug and then we can all sing koombaya. And whenever the other team touches the puck we all yell, “Good luck!!”

Reason #1 Canada sucks is their obsession with adding the letter “u” every time a word ends in “or.” Neighbour, behaviour, colour, etc. Every time I try to to add a “u” I get autocorrected and then a red line appears. Do Canadian computers not use Microsoft Word? I mean, English is English right? Now this would be understandable from someone who was born and raised in Canada. But check out Jack Todd’s wikipedia page:

Jack Todd (born 1946 in Nebraska) has been a sports columnist for the Montreal Gazette since 1986. Todd was an American citizen who deserted from the U.S. Army to avoid being sent to fight during the Vietnam War. He is now a Canadian citizen.

Todd was born in the United States, and graduated from the University of Nebraska.

Pretty sure the Nebraska Public Schools didn’t teach him to write that way. Now I’m not gonna hate on this guy for being a draft dodger. Nam was a stupid war based on a series of lies, and quite frankly I probably would’ve tried to find a way out of it too if I was in that situation. But it is relevant to point out that his distaste for the Bruins is largely influenced by his hatred for the United States.

Ultimately, whether we like to admit it or not, there is a connection between behaviour at the rink and the behaviour of those who were responsible for the barrage of racist tweets aimed at Subban after Game 1. Those tweets represented a level of ugliness the sports world has been fighting since Jackie Robinson broke the colour barrier with the Montreal Royals — and they were enough to make you wonder whether we have made any progress at all from the days of segregated buses, segregated sports and night-riding Ku Klux Klansmen.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Let me get this straight….fans booing Chara and Subban is the equivalent of a bunch of idiots writing racist tweets from their mother’s basements? And this somehow proves that we haven’t advanced socially since the days of segregated buses and night-riding Klansmen? Right. Because lynching African-Americans in Alabama is the EXACT SAME FUCKING THING as a 15 year old writing racist things about PK Subban on Twitter. That makes sense.

P.K. Subban himself was very diplomatic and said that these idiots were not at all representative of Boston as a whole. Jack Todd disagrees:

“In his eagerness to exonerate the city of Boston and the Bruins fan base, Subban may have been too conciliatory. Certainly some of what has gone on in the media and in the building during the first two games has contributed to the atmosphere behind the racist tweets.”

Remind me, out of Subban and Tood, which one was the black guy? Because it appears to me that the black guy (Subban) isn’t as nearly as bent out of shape about these tweets as the white guy (Todd). Subban was “too conciliatory” according to Jack Todd. Nothing like a white guy telling a black guy that he should be making a bigger deal about a race related issue. Because that makes perfect sense.

None of this extracurricular garbage is remotely necessary when the Bruins meet the Canadiens. There is plenty of passion on the ice and in the arena. Ice-shaking hits, blinding speed, brilliant passes, scintillating saves, heart-stopping moments and more suspense than you get in an entire season of Breaking Bad.

Newsflash – if your team didn’t play like a bunch of diving dandies, then we wouldn’t be nearly as hard on you. We had a lot of respect for the Blackhawks last year, and we never booed Patrick Kane, despite the fact that his extracurriculars off the ice would’ve made him such an easy target. The “ice-shaking hits” you speak of are almost always delivered by us, and are followed by a token Brendan Gallagher dive (he has quickly supplanted Pacioretty as the face of Hab diving), power play, and then a Subban goal. That’s why we hate you.

Face it, there are always going to be racist tweets, just as there is racism in sports from European soccer to American baseball to Canadian hockey. It’s when you get a sharp spike in the sheer quantity of this garbage (as after Subban’s heroics in Boston in Game 1, when he had two goals including the game-winner in overtime) that it becomes truly appalling.

Look at genius, this isn’t that hard to figure out. A handful of people tweeted something, and then it was retweeted 17,000 times. That doesn’t qualify as a “sharp spike.”

One of the worst offenders after Game 1 was a coward hiding behind the name and number of Rick Nash — apparently a Rangers “fan,” not a Bruins fan. This creep actually said that because Subban is black and he isn’t, that meant Subban is two-thirds of the man he is. That’s rich, coming from an Internet troll

Good thing a major newspaper is giving such publicity to an internet troll. Newsflash – the troll just won. He got under your skin, got you to write about him, AND remained anonymous. You lose.

Something similar to the barrage of racist tweets aimed at Subban happened in 2012 when Washington’s Joel Ward scored the overtime winner in Game 7 as the Capitals ousted the Bruins from the playoffs. In the wake of those tweets, five students at Gloucester High School in Massachusetts (including three student-athletes) and others including a student at New Hampshire’s Franklin Pierce University and a junior hockey player in Rhode Island faced disciplinary action for their racist tweets.

High school kids said stupid shit on the internet? Hold the phone!!! Let’s stop everything we’re doing and charge these young punks with a hate crime. Because saying dumb shit on the internet is really no different than beating the shit out someone due to the color of their skin.

This type of writing is pretty part for the course for Mr. Todd. During the Olympics he was all fired up that P.K. Subban and Martin St. Louis weren’t getting enough ice time. Complaining when the Canadiens destroyed everyone and won the gold medal? This guy makes Felger look like Tanguay. Obviously only a dolt like Jack Todd would complain when their country dominated the best the world had to offer. So of course Jack Todd did what he does best and turned it into a racial thing:

Screen Shot 2014-05-05 at 10.51.06 PM Screen Shot 2014-05-05 at 10.51.12 PM

In case you didn’t pick up on Jack’s logic, Jimmy Murphy was pointing out Todd’s obsession with Subban by calling him a Subban lover. Todd did the only logical thing and jumped to the conclusion that this was a racial slur meant to imply that Todd was a “n” word lover.

Then there was 2011 when Tim Thomas didn’t go to the White House because he’s not a fan of President Obama. While I thought this was dumb on Thomas’ part, it obviously wasn’t racially motivated. Thomas is just a radical right winger, so he hates all democrats. But that didn’t stop Jack Todd from labeling Tim Thomas as a bigot:

“What’s worse, you know Thomas would not have done this with the liberal Democrat Bill Clinton in the White House. Truth is, he felt free to dis Barack Obama, because Obama is black.”

Nothing irresponsible about that writing at all. It’s really a shock that the Montreal Gazette ended up retracting that statement and apologizing for their loose cannon of a writer. This is what he had to say afterwards:

He can do WHATEVER he wants. Because he’s PAID, and you’re not. So suck on that!!

Look Jack Todd, I know your type. You’ve got the white guilt bug. You grew up in the 60’s watching images of Bloody Sunday, Birmingham, and the Freedom Rides, and you looked at yourself in the mirror and said, “this is my fault.” So you’ve spent your entire writing career trying to establish yourself as the progressive white guy. But you’re just trying WAAAYYY too hard. You can be supportive of African-Americans and tolerance without trying to tell people like P.K. Subban that they should be more outraged than they are.

Feel free to share your thoughts to keep the conversation going.

While the Red Sox were the last team to integrate, Boston was not the last city with an integrated team. The Boston Braves were one of the first teams in the major leagues to integrate. So using the Red Sox example to bash Boston is ignorant and stupid.

That is very true. Tom Yawkey was the problem more than the city of Boston. And racism wasn’t the problem with Yawkey not signing a black player, since let’s face it, he wasn’t the only racist owner at that time. He just happened to be racist and a friggin’ idiot to not put his views aside to sign Willie Mays.

I don’t give a fuck about Montreal, this Todd guy or hockey in general, really, just here to point out that Boston is rascist as fuck and this is just another example in a long line of past AND recent rascism.

The greatest player in the history of your shitty city, bill Russell hates the place because he suffered through decades of racism

The Red Sox were the LAST team to integrate, and fought it for as long as they could

Don’t be a black Harvard professor, if you accidentally get locked out of your house the rascist fucking police department will assume you are breaking in and arrest you.

Speaking of the rascist police department, they are notorious for their brutalities toward black citizens..try being a black man in south Boston

Schools in the city are the least integrated in the whole country. It’s worse than fucking 60s Alabama the way those things are segregated, even today.

Sadly, the Subban thing isn’t the first instance. Just a couple years ago Joel Ward of the capitals dealt with the same rascist bullshit.

So fuck that POS city. And fuck turtle bitch, I’m sure he will change this to say something like Boston Strong and everyone will ignore this post, ignore the racism and always complain when someone points out the truth about that shithole place. It’s the Boston way.

@ MassholeFuck—Why stop at examples from 70 years ago? In Salem they accused people of being witches and killed them. I hope we don’t see any tweets about witches!

More recent (and relevant) examples would include the last two presidential elections where Boston overwhelmingly elected a BLACK candidate, KG coming to Boston in 2008 (reluctantly because of idiots like you who call Boston racist) but now bleeds green and loves the city, or in 2011 Shaq coming to Boston and the city embracing him.

As far as the Cambridge professor incident goes, its pretty common knowledge that the only racist on scene there was Skippy Gates.

Hey idiot with the dumbest comment ever, why would you read this pathetic blog if you hate it so much? You must blow that piece of shit canadien Jack Todd who was born and raised in Nebraska. He’s a traitor with two first names what an embarrassment to men everywhere perfect fit for that pussy as city, you know the great people of Montreal that called the police on Chara for a hit on Pacioretty during the game causing the emergency line to crash lmao I bet you cried pussy. Montreal shitbags will only hire a coach who speaks French, and there has to be a certain number of players who do the same, nothing racist about that at all.
